A Cover a Day

Ok, how about this for an idea.  We take it in turns to post a favourite (British spelling) comic cover every day.  This went really well on the comic fan website that I used to frequent.  What we tried to do was find a theme or subject and follow that, until we all got bored with that theme.  I'd like to propose a theme of letters of the alphabet. So, for the remainder of October (only 5 days) and all of November, we post comic cover pictures associated with the letter "A".  Then in December, we post covers pertaining to the letter "B".  The association to the letter can be as tenuous as you want it to be. For example I could post a cover from "Adventure Comics" or "Amazing Spider Man".  However Spider Man covers can also be posted when we're on the letter "S".  Adventure Comic covers could also be posted when we're on the letter "L" if they depict the Legion of Super Heroes.  So, no real hard, fast rules - in fact the cleverer the interpretation of the letter, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

And it's not written in stone that we have to post a cover every day. There may be some days when no cover gets posted. There's nothing wrong with this, it just demonstrates that we all have lives to lead.

If everyone's in agreement I'd like to kick this off with one of my favourite Action Comic covers, from January 1967. Curt Swan really excelled himself here.

Okay, they have a cool undersea headquarters, or something, but, man, were they even trying with the alter-egos? It looks like they just bought some masks remaindered after last Halloween and said, "yeah, that's good enough."

I knew about the Terrible Trio of the Fox. the Shark and the Vulture but never read an actual comic with them.

And in some of those 100 pagers we even got reprints of the Tarzan comic strip by Russ Manning. For example the GCD says that “Mahagga” is 47 (!) pages of Manning reprints.  I should dig it out and reread it.

Marvel also had a "Terrible Trio", three petty crooks that Doctor Doom augmented to help him catch the FF in Fantastic Four #23 (F'64) then he dumped them in another dimension in case he needed them again. He didn't.

But Bull Brogin, "Handsome" Harry Phillips and Yogi Dakor attacked either the Human Torch, the Thing or both three more times to prove themselves to Doom. The poor saps!

Also, I never seen a cover with what is basically a footnote before!

The Terrible Trio were truly terrible -- as in terribly boring! At least i thought so after reading a reprint of FF #23 in one of the Treasury Collections.  Haven't read these Strange Tales yarns but I've seen the covers before -- amusing note on Dr. Doom's appearance on the corner of the cover to ST #122.  I'm sure it was a reminder of Doom's connection with the T.T. in the prior FF mag but since he doesn't actually appear in the new story Stan managed to make a joke about his being on the cover.  On ST #129, Yogi and Bull look a bit more menacing than on the previous cover, where they all just look rather silly.  Still, it's hard to imagine the blue eyed idol of millions being genuinely frightened of either Yogi or Bull which makes me think maybe Godzilla is looming right behind them.

John Buscema inked the Marvel Tarzan  #1 cover himself. (Also the insides.) I like the cover exceedingly. It's a homage to the very first Tarzan cover, from The All-Story Oct. 1912.
