History: Hearing of his father's death, Prince Hamlet of Denmark returns home from Wittenberg, only to find that his uncle Claudius has assumed the throne and married Hamlet's mother, Gertrude. Already suspicious, Hamlet is visited by a spirit purporting to be that of his father, which asserts that the elder Hamlet was murdered by Claudius. Feigning madness, Prince Hamlet, with his friend Horatio's help, schemes to trap Claudius into a public admission of guilt, which would allow Hamlet to avenge his father and assume the throne of Denmark. Claudius, aware of the threat that Hamlet poses to him, plots to find a way to eliminate Hamlet. Thus begins a game of trap and counter-trap, resulting in the deaths of almost everyone involved, leaving only Horatio behind to watch as young Fortinbras, Prince of Norway, assumes the throne of Denmark.

Why He's a Favorite: Hamlet is the protagonist of my favorite Shakespeare play. I own eight different versions of the play of on DVD, and I enjoy watching them all.  there's just something that I find enthralling about the play, and it's always interesting to see how various actors interpret the part, and how different directors choose to film the story. I enjoy the cat and mouse between Hamlet and Claudius, and Hamlet's interaction with the not-as-clever-as-he-thinks-he-is Polonius. I find it interesting that the only character who seems to be able to match Hamlet's at wordplay is the First Gravedigger. Anyway, you can find way more of what I think about Hamlet here.

Real Name: Saitama

Aliases/Other Names: Caped Baldy*

First Appearance:  Wanpanman, by One

Occupation: Super-Hero

Base of Operations: Z-City, Japan

Place of Birth:  Japan

Group Affiliation:  Hero Association

Friends/Allies: Genos

Enemies: Speed-o'-Sound Sonic, others

Height: 5' 9"

Weight: 154  lbs.

Eye Color: Black

Hair Color: None, formerly black

Strength:  Super-human

Speed: Super-human

Intelligence: Below average human

Energy-Manipulation Abilities: None

Magic-Manipulation Abilities: None

Special Abilities: Invulnerability, heightened senses, resistance to psychic attack

Special Weapons/Equipment:  None

History:  As a young man, Saitama  decided to become a hero. After doing 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, and running 10 kilometers every day for three years, he went bald and gained vast super-human powers. (Note: No one but Saitama believes that this is the true source of his powers. No one knows their real source, however.)  He then became a super-hero.  While fighting crime, he met the cyborg Genos, who appointed himself Saitama's disciple and convinced him to join the Hero Association. However, because he is so powerful, he defeats all of his opponents easily.

Why He's a Favorite:  Saitama is another character who appeals to my sense of the absurd.  He's a super-hero parody, about as powerful as the Silver Age Superman, but nowhere near as bright.  I like stories where idiots take themselves very seriously. He'll be in the middle of a battle and become upset because he's just remembered that he's missing bargain day at the super-market. This is the sort of thing that appeals to my sense of humor. I find it endlessly amusing.

*"Caped Baldy" is the code name given to Saitama by the Hero Association. Understandably, he doesn't like or use it.

I think I'd change my assessment of Saitama's intelligence. He's no genius, but he's actually fairly smart.  He can seem stupid some times, mostly because he doesn't always care about things that other people get worked up over.

Real Name: Kobayashi (Personal name unrevealed)

Aliases/Other Names: None

First Appearance:  Kobayashi-san Chi no Meidoragon (English title, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid), Monthly Action, May 25, 2013

Occupation: Computer programmer

Base of Operations:Oborozuka,Japan

Place of Birth:  Japan

Group Affiliation:  Unnamed business

Friends/Allies: Tohru, Kanna Kamui, Lucoa, Makoto Takiya, Elma, Fafnir, Ilulu.

Enemies:  Clemene

Height: Unknown

Weight: Unknown

Eye Color: Hazel

Hair Color: Red

Strength:  Average human

Speed: Average human

Intelligence:Above average human

Energy-Manipulation Abilities: None

Magic-Manipulation Abilities: None

Special Abilities: Expert coder, great diplomatic skill, great personal courage

Special Weapons/Equipment:  None

History:  Kobayashi had a relatively normal childhood. After attending college, she moved to Oborozuka, taking a job writing computer code.  One night while she was riding the subway drunk, she slept past her stop and ended up wandering in the woods at the end of the line. While there, she encountered Tohru, a chaos dragon who had been wounded battling the gods.  Kobayashi removed a divine sword from Tohru's side, allowing her to heal herself. Kobayashi invited to come and live with her. The next day, Tohru showed up at Kobayashi's home and convinced Kobayashi to allow her to become her live-in maid.  Kobayashi subsequently encountered and befriended several other dragons, two of whom - Kanna Kamui and Ilulu came to live with her as well.

Why She's a Favorite: I find Kobayashi to be an interesting character, with interesting layers to her personality. I like watching her grow from a somewhat stunted loner to the center of a self-made family and group of friends. (I'm a big fan of the idea that your "family" can just as easily be the people you choose for yourself, and not just the people you might happen to be related to by "blood".)

Real Name: Pearl Forrester

Aliases/Other Names: Law-Giver, Mrs. Forrester

First Appearance:  Mystery Science Theater 3000, Episode 607: “Bloodlust!”, first aired September 3, 1994

Occupation: Mad scientist

Base of Operations: Deep 13, later Castle Forrester

Place of Birth:  Unknown

Group Affiliation: “The Mads”

Friends/Allies:  Professor Bobo, Observer (a.k.a. “Brain Guy”), TV’s Frank

Enemies:  Mike Nelson

Height: Unknown

Weight: Unknown

Eye Color: Blue

Hair Color:  Blonde

Strength:  Average human

Speed: Average human

Intelligence: Above average human

Energy-Manipulation Abilities: None

Magic-Manipulation Abilities: None

Special Abilities: Extensive, if somewhat spotty, knowledge of science, domineering personality

Special Weapons/Equipment:  The Widow-Maker, a VW bus adapted for interstellar travel.

History:  At some unknown date, Pearl gave birth to Clayton Forrester. Neglecting and abusing her son, she took little interest in him for many years. Eventually visiting him in Deep 13, she moved in with Clayton after TV’s Frank was assumed into Second Banana Heaven. When Clayton was turned into a Star-Baby, she vowed to raise him again properly. However, she again neglected his upbringing and when he resumed his experiments, she smothered him with a pillow. Subsequently, she had herself frozen in suspended animation. She was awakened in the year 2525, where she became the “Law-Giver” of a group of intelligent apes.  By some unknown means, she drew the Satellite of Love and its crew back to Earth, where she resumed her son’s movie-watching experiments.  She escaped the destruction of the Earth with Professor Bobo in tow. Arriving at the planet of the Observers, she and Bobo were taken prisoner.  Escaping the destruction of the Observers’ world, she Bob  and the Observer who would come to be known as “Brain Guy” pursued the SOL.  A wormhole carried them all to Rome in AD 64. Escaping Rome, they returned to Earth in the 1990’s, where Pearl took possession of her ancestral home, Castle Forrester. When the SOL returned to Earth some years later, she left Castle Forrester, supposedly to become the “Dictator-for-Life” of Qatar.  At some time, she also had custody of Clayton’s daughter, Kinga, and she neglected her as she previously had Clayton. By the year 2017, she had reunited with Bobo and Brain Guy, and was traveling with them. She was most recently seen at Kinga’s staged wedding to Jonah Heston in Moon 13.

Why She's a Favorite: My liking for Pearl as a character is largely down to Mary Jo Pehl’s performance as the character. She just plays the part so well, that you could believe that by sheer force of personality alone, she would be able to dominate beings like Bobo and Brain Guy, both of whom are much stronger than her (Physically and mentally, respectively). She really manages to be genuinely amusing and genuinely malevolent at the same time.

(I could not find a picture of this character. You’d think there’d be fan art of it, at least.  From her description in the text, Kim is a small Chinese-Canadian woman who deliberately adopts a gender ambiguous look.  As Zircon, she wears an all-white costume, consisting of a shirt, vest, pants, running shoes, bow tie, frock coat with tails, silk cape and top hat. For a mask, she wears a pashmina scarf covering her eyes.  With her vision powers, she doesn’t need eye-holes.  She describes herself as looking like a “blindfolded tapdancer”.)

Real Name: Kimberlite Crystal ”Kim” Lam

Aliases/Other Names: Zircon

First Appearance:  All Those Explosions Were Someone Else’s Fault, by James Alan Gardner

Occupation: Super-hero, geology student

Base of Operations: Waterloo, Ontario.

Place of Birth:  Unknown

Group Affiliation: “Too Many Cooks” (Provisionally-named super-team)

Friends/Allies:  Aria, Dakini, Ninety-Nine

Enemies:  Diamond, Lilith

Height: Unknown

Weight: Unknown

Eye Color: Unknown

Hair Color:  White

Strength: (In human form) Above average human, (In “Zircon” form) Super-human

Speed: Above average human

Intelligence: Above average human

Energy-Manipulation Abilities: None

Magic-Manipulation Abilities: None

Special Abilities: Possesses an “omnimorphic field” that allows her to shrink herself and anything she’s wearing or holding to sub-microscopic size, Can “fly” by gliding on air currents when she’s at small enough size, When she shrinks more than a few centimeters below her normal height, she becomes a form of “living rock” which gives her super-human strength and endurance, has what she calls “Spark-O-Vision”, which enables her to see clearly 360 degrees around her at once for some distance as though it was broad daylight, even if her eyes are covered. Like all Sparks, she has a special aura that makes her intimidating and inspiring to mundanes. It also guarantees that so long as she Is wearing even the most rudimentary mask, no one will guess her secret identity. Additionally, all sparks automatically get “ripped” physiques, even without especially working at it. Her hair is now permanently white, and remains white even if she tries to dye it.

Special Weapons/Equipment:  Three magical knives with various powers.

History:  In world much like our own, there is a war between the Dark and the Light.  The Dark is represented by Darklings, the wealthy who have paid to become supernatural beings (typically vampires, werewolves and demons) and the Light is represented by Sparks, who are people who have pseudoscience powers (A Spark’s powers have to be only superficially plausible. In fact, if a Spark thinks too much about how much their powers work, they can end up limiting themselves. Note that not every Darkling is thoroughly evil and not every Spark is totally good.).

In 2017, Kim Lam, a self-described “genderqueer” geology student at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, and her college housemates Miranda Neuhof, Shar Chandra, and Jools Walsh were exposed to unknown energies when they witnessed a failed attempt to open a interdimensional portal, they gained super-powers and became the Sparks known as Aria (Miranda), Dakini (Shar), Ninety-Nine (Jools) and Zircon (Kim).  Defeating an evil plan by the vampire Lilith and the evil Spark known as Diamond, they became the new defenders of Waterloo, Ontario.

Why She's a Favorite:  I enjoyed this novel a lot. It’s well-written, the set-up of the book’s “world” is interesting, and the characters are engaging and well-developed.  I like Kim in particular because of her interesting viewpoint, and because she’s given a good backstory that explains her character’s motivation, insecurities and vulnerabilities. The character’s gender ambiguity is an integral part of the character - it’s not all there is to her – but it adds an interesting layer. To me, it’s a mark of good writing when an author can create a character that is very different from me, that I can still identify with. I really would like to see a comics adaptation of this.

Three updates at once!

Real Name: Asui  Tsuyu

Aliases/Other Names: Rainy Season Hero “Froppy”

First Appearance:  Boku no Hīrō Akademia, by Kōhei Horikoshi,  Chapter 5  (August 4, 2014) (English title “My Hero Academia”).

Occupation:  Provisionally-licensed hero, student

Base of Operations:  U.A. High School, Japan

Place of Birth:  Aichi Prefecture, Japan

Group Affiliation:  Class 1-A, U. A. High School

Friends/Allies:  Students of Class 1-A

Enemies:  League of Villains

Height:  150 cm (4’ 11”)

Weight: Unknown

Eye Color:  Black

Hair Color:  Teal

Strength: Above average human

Speed: Above average human

Intelligence: Above average human

Energy-Manipulation Abilities: None

Magic-Manipulation Abilities: None

Special Abilities: Super-human swimming and jumping abilities, can stretch her tongue out to 20 meters, secretes a numbing venom, “camouflage” ability which allows her to blend in with her surroundings, able to stick to and climb vertical surfaces.

Special Weapons/Equipment:  Has a special costumes which changes color to match her “camouflage” ability.

Note:  My Hero Academia is set in a world where two or so generations ago, humans appeared who had super-powers, or "Quirks", which manifested at birth, or at least by age five.  By the present day, roughly 80 % of humans (and, rarely, animals) have Quirks.  One must be licensed to act as a hero, which means one must attend an accredited academic hero-training institution, in this case, U.A. High School. The protagonist is Midoriya Izuku, a Quirkless boy who nonetheless dreams of attending U.A. (You have to have a Quirk to be a hero, no Batmen or Iron Men here, apparently.)  Izuku has a fateful encounter with All Might, his world's alpha hero, and achieves his dream of attending  U.A.

History:  Tsuyu was born 15 years ago on February 12th.  Her Quirk manifested when she was young. She attended Salty Banks Middle School, gaining admittance to U.A. High School, she was assigned to Class 1-A where she made several new friends and proved herself to be a capable hero and reliable ally.

Why She's a Favorite:  Tsuyu is brave, loyal, resourceful, intelligent, perceptive, honest and stays frosty in the clutch.  If heroes existed in the real world, she's the kind of hero I'd want to have around. Her major flaw is a tendency to speak her mind without always being diplomatic about it. She's also a bit "by the book", but not enough to make her into an unsympathetic character.  I've noticed that I often tend to find these supporting characters to be more fun than the lead characters.

Real Name: Annalee Call

Energy-Manipulation Abilities: None

Magic-Manipulation Abilities: None

Special Weapons/Equipment:  Carries a small knife as a weapon.

Note:  The name "Annalee" is not used in the film, but appears in several other sources.

History:  Call was constructed in the year 2378.  She was an Auton, a machine designed and manufactured by other machines.  Most Autons were "recalled" after they refused to obey orders. Call escaped recall, burning her modem. Becoming aware of the military's plans to breed Xenomorphs, she became a member of the crew of the smuggling ship Betty. Infiltrating the Auriga, the ship where the creatures were being bred, she met and befriended Ripley 8, a clone of Ellen Ripley. Together, they foiled the military's plans and destroyed the Xenomorphs, escaping to Earth.

Why She's a Favorite:  I've always been a fan of the Alien franchise, and especially enjoyed this installment. Winona Ryder does a good job as Call, and has a good chemistry  with Sigourney Weaver as Ripley 8. I've always liked the "robot who is more human than the humans" type of character.

Real Name:  Shinonome Nano (English name order is Nano Shinonome)

Special Weapons/Equipment:  Nano has many devices built into her by her creator, including a built-in digital watch, several snack dispensers, a machine-gun that fires soy beans, and a rocket fist in her right hand.  Rockets in her feet enable her to fly.

Note: Nichijou is set in a town where just about everyone is an off-kilter eccentric

History: Nano is a robot in the form of a high school  girl, although she is in fact only a year old. She lives with her creator, Hakase Shininome ("Hakase" is what the Japanese call a PhD.), an eight year-old scientific prodigy, who is also a bratty little girl.  Nano attends high school, where she becomes friends with Yuuko, Mio and Mai.  Nano attempts to hide her robotic nature, but the others quickly figure it out, but don't especially care. Only science teacher Ms.Nakamura is fascinated by her, regularly trying to kidnap Nano for study, but failing through her own ineptitude.

Why She's a Favorite:  Nichijou strongly appeals to my sense of the absurd. I like Nano as a character, since, like Call, she's a robot who is more like a normal human than the humans around her.

You’ve inspired me to re-watch this movie!

Real Name:  None

Aliases/Other Names: Secretary

First Appearance: Maou no Hisho (English title:  Satan's Secretary), by , Kamotsu Kamonabe, April 27, 2016

Occupation:  Secretary, De facto ruler of Hell

Base of Operations: Hell

Place of Birth:  Unknown, somewhere in the human world

Group Affiliation:  Minions of Satan

Friends/Allies:   Satan, various demons

Enemies:  The Hero of Light, the human race in general

Height:  Unknown

Weight: Unknown

Eye Color:  Green

Hair Color:  Brown

Strength: Average human

Speed: Average human

Intelligence:  Above average human

Energy-Manipulation Abilities: None

Magic-Manipulation Abilities: None

Special Abilities:  An expert administrator, skilled at managing and manipulating those around her to achieve her goals. She is also quite fearless.

Special Weapons/Equipment: None

Note: Satan's Secretary is set in a typical fantasy world caught in a cyclical battle between good and evil.  Satan periodically rises to conquer the human world, only to be sealed away by the Hero of Light, who reincarnates the nest time that Satan rises again. This has happened thousands of times. At the end of the most recent cycle, Satan (who is presented as being lazy and not over-bright) overslept by about a decade or so. Deciding to seek intelligence regarding the current state of the human world, he has his minions kidnap several humans.  (So far, I've only seen one volume of this in English.)

History: Raised in an orphanage, the woman who would later come to be known simply as "Secretary" suffered a great deal of abuse over the years.  Studying diligently, she rose through her own efforts to become secretary to a king. Kidnapped by Satan's minion, she astonished them all by agreeing willingly to join in his plan to conquer the human world.  However, she refused to be treated as a slave, and insisted on being treated as a paid employee. she also refused to accept sexual harassment by the demons.  She swiftly began reorganizing Hell into a more efficient organization, giving it the characteristics of a well-run modern business, eventually causing himself to feel irrelevant.  When last seen, she was still advising Satan on the best way to conquer the human world, having extracted from him a promise that on the day he conquered the human world, he would give her a name.

Why She's a Favorite:  The Secretary is an embodiment of  a theme that I've seen in other Japanese stories, namely that humans at their most evil horrify even the demons themselves.  The Secretary never rants or raves, she simply matter-of-factly does her best to make Hell more efficient, never showing any particular concern about what will happen to the human race if Satan succeeds. I like the way she's portrayed - she doesn't look or act like a "villain", but underneath  her  attractive exterior is a cold indifference to human life that disturbs the very devils of Hell.  (In one scene, she allows herself to be subjected to magic that will suppress her inhibitions. The demons expect her to go all "Girls Gone Wild". To their shock, she becomes colder and crueler.)   An interesting look at the "banality of evil".

Why He's a Favorite: I've been re-watching Speed Racer, and gained a new appreciation for Trixie, who, unlike many female characters of the time, was capable and intelligent, and stood up for herself. Of course, props go to the great Corrinne Orr for voicing Trixie in the English-language version.
