Wow, there were some good comics out this week. I picked up Beasts of Burden 3, Criminal 2, Fantastic Four 573, Green Lantern 48, Wonder Woman 38, Justice League of America 39, Blackest Night 5, and Detective Comics 859 -- and the only real disappointment was Fantastic Four, which had some good moments, but focused too much on characters I didn't know or care about. (Actually, the same could be said about Green Lantern, I guess.) The best of the bunch -- with stiff competition from Wonder Woman, Beasts of Burden, and the always-reliable Criminal -- was Detective Comics. The sequence in which Kate, whom we knew had a military background, left the military was glaringly obvious in retrospect -- of course that's what happened, and how and why -- but its simplicity and quiet drama was much more appropriate than something more bombastic. And her father's reaction to the news was every bit as well-handled. Throw in a little Gimli/Legolas competition between The Question and The Huntress, and I'm a happy guy. So what was YOUR best comic of the week?

It wasn't stated outright, but it seemed to be implied that she was dobbed out by someone veeeeery close to her!

I have mixed feelings about her origin. I admire that they took so long to tell it, and that the same writer has handled her from the start.

What happened to her mother just seemed very prosaic and specific to a particular era. After last months issue I was puzzled as to why she bacame an urban vigilante instead of joining the airforce and bombing fundamentalists (and their mothers!) from 30,000 feet. She'd get good payback that way.

As you say, this issue shows Rucka is a step ahead of us.

Still hard to see why she'd become an urban vigilante though...

The timeframes are a bit odd. Last month the issue was called '20 years ago...' and Kate was 12. So she's 32 now? That's very late to be entering the superhero business, but having a few years behind her gives her 'texture'. We also have a lot to learn as to how she became so good at what she's doing, so we'd need a few years training to explain that.

And 20 years ago was 1989, long before the heyday of international terrorists capturing and executing people. (Although it wasn't unheard of ...)

I don't think its stated for certain that it was muslim terrorists, but if it is they'd really date this comic in a few years.

Or perhaps they aren't Jihadists and we've already met them in this series?
  • Her dad's reaction made something get in my eye.

Check out the Secret Headquarters (my store) website! It's a pretty lame website, but I did it myself, so tough noogies

Listen to WOXY.com, it's the future of rock-n-roll!

It's good they have rules to protect those rough tough marines from the notion of two people kissing...
  • It seems pretty clear that her encounter with Batman sparked the idea of becoming a vigilante in Kate. I agree -- it'll be interesting to see how she gets from that point (seven years ago) to the point where we met her (2 years ago?).
