  • I have, but haven't yet read, Children's Crusade...but I will this weekend.

The Brightest Day Atom Special - This was more conventional than I was expecting from a writer like Lemire. And the death in it seemed a bit too Flash #1 to me. The cover is beautiful, though!

Hawkeye and Mockingbird - I really want to like this series...but it's spending too much time on cleaning up old continuity and not enough on having fun with Hawkeye quips...close to dropping sorry to say.

X-Force - another popular mutant sacrifices himself to save the few remaining. And Hope finally comes into her own. There is a quiet panel with Emma that hit like gut-shot. This is a rare thing, a great crossover with real consequences.

X-Men #1 - The vampire clans have come together and they're taking over with viruses and suicide bombers. These vamps ain't sparkly. Jubilee fans will want to pick this one up...if you're not a Jubilee fan, it's still a nice start to a new storyline.

Hellboy - More crazyness in England as Hellboy starts to deal with being King of all Britain.

Batman Odyssey - This should have been the next All-Star Batman...amazing to look at...a lot of "what the hell?" in the story and script.

Batman and Robin - Bruce has a new replacement...and the Joker couldn't be happier...especially as he's being hit repeatedly in the face. That Joker...man...brrrrrrrr.
  • I find myself with no interest in "Children's Crusade" since the Young Avengers never appealed to me and I really don't like them turning Wanda into a walking reset button.

Hawkeye has the potential of being a fun book but the issue of the Phantom Rider is a major source of conflict in Clint and Bobbi's relationship and must be dealt with. But why Crossfire?? At least it's not Oddball!
  • Oddball! I would have taken him gladly! I don't need them to work out the Phantom Rider stuff that was YEARS ago. I wouldn't mind superhero comics pretending that nothing older than the last five years "happened".

I'm also the guy that thinks only music made within the past six months should be on the radio. So...I may be weird...
  • Hank Pym slapped Jan almost THIRTY years ago and it's affected his characterization ever since. The same with Tony Stark's alcoholism and Peter Parker's guilt over Gwen Stacy which is still Norman Osborn's overwhelming crime! The Phantom Rider "incident" had ramifications that ruined their marriage and they must deal with those issues in order to move on together.

BTW, does Marvel have any criminal archers? I can only recall the Sagittarius LMD and Crossbow from "Daredevil".

That can't be true, 'cuz if it were I'd have to be old ...
  • Happens to the best of us, my friend!
  • My first thought is, "Neal Adams back on Batman? Yay!" My second though is, "Neal Adams on a 12-issue series? Good luck seeing that ship on time!" I haven't actually read any comic books yet this week (except for Marvelman Family's Finest #1), but this one is going to be first second on my list. I have heard that there is a scheduled, natural break in the story between issues six and seven. I have also heard that Adams has already pencilled through #7 and inked through #3.

I gave a pass to the new X-Men #1 and I'll tell you why. Whereas I like and have followed Marvel's version of Dracula, I no longer like to read about vampires and superheroes mixing together in the MU. As long as vampires exist in their own little corner of the MU and don't interract with the mainstream cvharacters I have no objection. But Doctor Strange wiped out all vampirism from the MU and that's the reality I choose to accept on Earth-J.
  • The strange thing about "The Death of Dracula" is that Dracula has already been killed off for good, totally and never coming back a couple of times now so why is this one so final? Also Dracula looks nothing like he did in "Tomb of Dracula". Since Janus is his son, it should be the same version. They are still marketing this Dracula with color TPBs to go with their successful Essential line. He looked the same in "Captain Britain & MI 13", so why the change?
  • Is Trick Shot considered a villainous archer? Not that he is much of a factor anymore. And when Golden Archer became Black Archer in Squadron Supreme, he was kinda villainous...
  • Neal Adams has a tin ear when it comes to realistic dialogue, but as an artist who writes, his scripts are as distinctive as Jack Kirby's and I wouldn't have it any other way. I like the way the cover leads directly into the story rather than simply illustrating a scene from the story (which it does as well). Adams seems to have anticipated fanboy criticism with Batman's thought balloon on page two. For those of you who haven't seen it, Batman is climbing the side of a boxcar with .45 drawn. (The story told in flashback is set during his early days as a vigilante with a gun on his hip.) Teeth gritted and bat-ears bend against the heavy wind, he thinks, "Could've waited on drawing the gun. Now I have to climb with one hand... stupid." For those of you who have seen it, isn't that just what you were thinking? :P
