BEST BETS
THE DELINQUENTS #1 (of 4, Valiant, $3.99): The new kid on the block launches a miniseries combining the stars of their two funniest books, Quantum & Woody and Archer & Armstrong. It's superhero-ish action, but should also serve as an antidote to the shroud of grimness that seems to cover all superhero comics.
THE FADE-OUT #1 (Image, $3.50): The team of writer Ed Brubaker and artist Sean Phillips have demonstrated their mastery of noir in such books as Fatale and Criminal, and now launch a book that perfectly suits their strengths: a crime noir set in 1930s Hollywood. That's all I need to know to sign up for the ride, which is bound to be good.
JUSTICE INC #1 (Dynamite, $3.99): If you're a fan of The Shadow, Doc Savage and/or The Avenger, the "Big 3" of Street & Smith pulp magazines in the 1920s and '30s, you've probably wondered what would happen if these very different characters tried to work together. It's happened once before at another publisher, but not for very long, so this new title from Dynamite should be very, very interesting.
LITTLE NEMO IN SLUMBERLAND #1 (IDW, $3.99): This all ages book brings a beloved character back to print, albeit without the genius of creator Winsor McCay, who died in 1934. That's pretty gutsy -- this book is bound to be compared to the Little Nemo strips, long regarded as classics -- but they must have a reason for their confidence, and it's worth a look to find out if it's justified.
THE MULTIVERSITY #1 (DC Comics, $4.99): DC has made a lot of missteps with its multiverse of late, but this promises to be a huge on in the right direction. Grant Morrison, one of the best writers in comics, will use this book to tell stories from at least six different parallel worlds, with the fan favorite President Superman of Earth-23 as the backbone. This should be quite a ride!
SENSATION COMICS FEATURING WONDER WOMAN #1 (DC, $3.99): The Amazing Amazon got her start in Sensation Comics back in 1940, and now DC is reviving the title with Wonder Woman stories that first appeared online. The chief draw here is that the first tale is by the excellent Gail Simone, which answers the fervent prayers of a lot of fans.
THE STRAIN: THE NIGHT ETERNAL (Dark Horse, $3.99): If you've been watching the excellent TV adaptation of Guillermo del Toro's Strain trilogy on FX, you know what a great story it is. Dark Horse has already adapted the first two books (available in trade paperback and hardback), and this issue begins the adaptation of the third.

THE FADE OUT #1
Story: ED BRUBAKER
Art / Cover: SEAN PHILLIPS & ELIZABETH BREITWEISER
40 PAGES / FC / M / $3.50
Ed Brubaker (FATALE, VELVET, Captain America: Winter Soldier) and Sean Phillips (FATALE, Criminal, Marvel Zombies) launch the first show-stopper from their unprecedented five-year deal announced at Image Expo in January -- the hotly anticipated epic noir series, THE FADE OUT.
"Everyone at Image loves working with Ed and Sean,” said Eric Stephenson, Publisher at Image Comics. “They’re one of the best creative teams working in comics today, with an absolutely stunning catalog of work, and I personally consider bringing Fatale to Image one of the best things to happen to us over what has been a pretty amazing last couple years. One of the great things about this business is the opportunities we’re given to work with good people, and it’s really gratifying to see directly how talent like Ed and Sean respond to the unparalleled freedom and support we offer at Image.”
"This is amazing. It's like having an overall deal with a studio, except we get to greenlight our own projects," said Brubaker. "Sean and I have been making comics together for fifteen years, and in the early days before we built the passionate readership we have now, we struggled to survive, so a deal like this is exactly what I was looking for. I've already got more than enough ideas to fill those five years, and both Sean and I are looking forward to experimenting and really pushing the boundaries."
As an added bonus to this exciting launch, this first issue will clock in at 40 pages and feature exclusive back page articles. For fans wishing to experience noir fiction in true ‘40s style, an oversized "movie magazine replica" variant edition with 8 extra pages of behind-the-scenes art and articles will be available for order.
An intricate and groundbreaking crime story on a level Brubaker and Phillips have never tackled before, THE FADE OUT weaves a tangled web through the underbelly of a 1948 Hollywood. ... A noir film stuck in endless reshoots. A writer plagued with nightmares from the war and a dangerous secret. An up-and-coming starlet's suspicious death. And a maniacal studio mogul and his security chief who will do anything to keep the cameras rolling before the Post-War boom days come crashing down. THE FADE OUT is the most ambitious series yet from the award-winning Noir Masters.
"The Fade Out is my ultimate noir story. It's a brutal crime story set in late '40s Hollywood, and all spinning around the mysterious death of an up-and-coming starlet," said Brubaker. "For people who've been waiting for us to return to Criminal, this will be exactly what they're looking for, but on a much more epic scale -- going from studio backlots to the debauchery of the rich and famous, and even stretching back to the horrors of World War Two."
Early praise for THE FADE OUT:
"Brubaker and Phillips's books have always been about eight years ahead of their time." -- Brian K. Vaughan (SAGA, Y the Last Man)
"Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips are the gold standard of the crime graphic novel." -- Warren Ellis (Planetary, Transmetropolitan, Gun Machine, Fell)
"Brubaker & Phillips continue to make sweet music together, broadcast to you in the form of the best comics around." -- Robert Kirkman (THE WALKING DEAD, INVINCIBLE)
"How can you resist the Lennon and McCartney of Feel-Bad Comics Noir heading out west for the flickering horrors of Hollywoodland? THE FADE OUT feels like the book Ed and Sean were born to make." -- Matt Fraction (SEX CRIMINALS, CASANOVA, Hawkeye)
"Ed and Sean are that rare longterm collaboration that never become complacent, each project is a new revelation, the love visibly increased, the enthusiasm for the craft only growing over time. You don't have to consider the purchase, you make it on instinct at this point." -- Rick Remender (BLACK SCIENCE, DEADLY CLASS)
"Like Scorsese and De Niro, Brubaker and Phillips are the unmatched masters of a certain kind of storytelling -- those fables of doomed and deluded men who are ready to die bloody, defending the tatters of their soiled American dreams. A new title from the sharpshooters behind Criminal and Fatale is reason enough to go on living." -- Joe Hill (Locke & Key, Horns, NOS4A2)
"Brubaker and Phillips have achieved the sort of creative consistency that'd justify critics filing their INSTANT CLASSIC reviews before they even read whatever they put out next." -- Kieron Gillen (THE WICKED + THE DIVINE, Phonogram, Young Avengers)
"I’ve been reading Ed Brubaker comics since the first appearance of Ed Brubaker comics and every single time he announces a new title I mutter to myself: 'ugh! I wish I would’ve thought of that!'" -- Brian Michael Bendis (POWERS, Alias, Ultimate Spider-Man)
"I'm a pretty easy mark for any Brubaker-Philips creation, but the ambition behind this one has me spinning with anticipation. Couldn't be more excited." -- Jonathan Hickman (EAST OF WEST, MANHATTAN PROJECTS, Avengers)
“Two of the best in the business, no contest.” -- Kelly Sue DeConnick
“I never know what to say in these things” -- Kelly Sue DeConnick
“Seriously, just buy the [expletive deleted] book. I promise you’ll like it. Unless you’re [expletive deleted].” -- Kelly Sue DeConnick
“I don’t think we’re supposed to say [expletive deleted] anymore.” -- Kelly Sue DeConnick
“Forget I said that." -- Kelly Sue DeConnick (PRETTY DEADLY, Captain Marvel)
Several of Brubaker and Phillips' previous projects are currently in development as films, with Kim Jee-Woon (A Bittersweet Life, I Saw The Devil) recently signing on to direct COWARD, the inaugural story arc of their celebrated series Criminal, and Sleeper being produced by Ben Affleck (Argo) and Matt Damon (The Bourne Identity) at Warner Bros.

COURTNEY CRUMRIN VOLUME SIX: THE FINAL SPELL
Written and Drawn by Ted Naifeh
Colored by Warren Wucinich
On the run from the Coven with her former teacher Calpurnia, Courtney Crumrin is quickly learning just how sinister the witches and warlocks of Hillsborough can be -- but she never thought she’d see the day when Uncle Aloysius turned on her as well. It’s a lot harder to fight a battle when the only family you care about is against you, and Courtney’s only salvation may lie in the Twilight Kingdom -- and away from the mortal world. But Aloysius won’t give up his niece so easily -- even if he has to fight the night creatures to do it.
I occasionally read this series and enjoy it, but I always wonder why Courtney has no nose. Has that been explained in some book I haven't read, or is it just an artist quirk?

HELLRAISER BESTIARY #1
Publisher: BOOM! STUDIOS
Writers: Victor La & Various
Art: Colin Lorimer & Various
Cover: Conor Nolan
WHY WE LOVE IT: Over the past three years, Clive Barker has re-imagined the HELLRAISER mythos as only he could, building a longform narrative that became one of the best-received horror comics in recent memory. Now, the Master of Horror takes us into his Bestiary for an anthology series-free of continuity, but full of shocking consequences.
WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT: HELLRAISER: BESTIARY will pick up where classic horror comics anthologies like Tales From The Crypt, Vault of Horror, and the more recent Flinch left off. And not only will some of comics' rising stars, such as Ed Brisson (Sheltered), and Michael Moreci (CURSE), get a chance to open the puzzle box in this series, but the first issue features the comics debut of award-winning novelist Victor LaValle (The Devil in Silver, Big Machine).
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Step into the Bestiary for all-new tales of the LeMarchand Device and its guardians! This first issue contains the start of a six-part serial written by Mark Miller (CLIVE BARKER'S NEXT TESTAMENT) and Ben Meares (HELLRAISER ANNUAL 2013), and drawn by Carlos Magno (DEATHMATCH), where a group of mercenaries are hired to steal Pinhead's pins. Also, superstar author Victor LaValle teams with artist Colin Lorimer (CURSE) to tell a story set on the outskirts of New York City, as a close-knit community is torn apart by the presence of the puzzle box.

HIP HOP FAMILY TREE VOL 1 (NEW PTG GN)
Publisher: FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS
Writer/Art/Cover: Ed Piskor
An exciting announcement from Fantagraphics Books: after only twelve weeks, Ed Piskor's Hip Hop Family Tree Book One is going back to press for a third printing. The historical account -- in graphic novel form -- of hip-hop music and culture hit shelves December 11, 2013, and the first printing sold out within a month. A second printing sold out even more quickly after hitting stores in early March.
The book is beloved by critics as much as fans. The Washington Post: “Piskor’s book feels just as real and authentic as the retro rap it celebrates.” NPR calls the series “a real fusion of both art forms”; it continues, “Piskor tells the gripping origin story of hip-hop in storyboard form with original artwork. Illuminating for kids and grown-ups alike.”
“I’m literally making a comic that I want to read,” says cartoonist Ed Piskor. “I feel like Hip Hop Family Tree is a comic I was born to draw and it’s an absolute pleasure that people seem to dig it too. Truthfully, though, I’d be lying if I said I was surprised about the reaction from readers.”

HIP HOP FAMILY TREE VOL 2 (GN)

One more time ... live as if you're about to die.
Mature/$12.99
Another interesting one that looks at what people might do if they knew they had only 24 hours to live. The set-up's somewhat implausible (the Japanese government's set up a program where random people are chosen to die), but the stories themselves are interesting, and there's a subplot where a government agent begins questioning the morality of his work. One of a number of manga that seems to reflect a belief that Japan is only a short step away from a totalitarian state.

MONSTER MUSUME VOL 4 (GN)
Publisher: SEVEN SEAS ENTERTAINMENT LLC
Writer/Art/Cover: Okayado
What do world governments do when they learn that fantastical beings are not merely fiction, but flesh and blood -- not to mention feather, hoof and fang? Why, they create new regulations, of course! "The Interspecies Cultural Exchange Accord" ensures that these once-mythical creatures assimilate into human society -- or else! When hapless human twenty-something Kurusu Kimihito becomes an involuntary "volunteer" in the government homestay program for monster girls, his world is turned upside down. A reptilian lamia named Miia is sent to live with him, and worse, when a buxom centaur girl named Centorea and a scantily clad harpy named Papi move into Kimihito's house, what's a full-blooded young man with raging hormones to do?
Mature/$12.99
And the "harem comedy" genre just gets weirder ...
Agreed. And the description forces me to wonder how one would have sex with a girl who is a fish from the waist down, and that isn't something I want to think about. Then there's the centaur, and that's just plain old bestiality.
ODD DUCK (GN)
Publisher: :01 FIRST SECOND
Art/Cover: Sara Varon
Theodora is a perfectly normal duck. She may swim with a teacup balanced on her head and stay north when the rest of the ducks fly south for the winter, but there's nothing so odd about that. Chad, on the other hand, is one strange bird. Theodora quite likes him, but she can't overlook his odd habits. It's a good thing Chad has a normal friend like Theodora to set a good example for him. But maybe Chad's not the only odd duck here.
$15.99
It looks like Chad is dancing with some sort of rodent, so there may be no hope for him.

ROY THOMAS PRESENTS: SHEENA QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE VOL 1 (BOOKSHOP EDITION)
Publisher: PS ARTBOOKS
Writers: Roy Thomas & Various
Art: Robert Webb, Alex A. Blum & Various
Roy Thomas Presents: Sheena, Queen of the Jungle. She may still be everyone's favorite yellow-tressed leopard-skin-clad Jungle Jane but, having made her first appearance almost 80 years ago (courtesy of Will Eisner and Jerry Iger in the British mag Wags #1), Sheena, Queen of the Jungle could be forgiven for being somewhat less spritely swinging through the trees righting wrongs and wielding her knife. There have been other incarnations, of course, but it's this classic material that strikes at the very heart of Good Girl Art. Whhhoooooaaaarrrrrgggghhhh!
$47.99
Sheena is one of those concepts I've always known a lot about, but never read. Now I can correct that. I don't expect Watchmen but it should be interesting from a historical standpoint.

In 1938, she made it Stateside with her first showing in Jungle Comics #1 where she settled happily in every issue (plus a decade in her own title) until April 1953. But once Amara is born, things aren't quite how she expected them to be. Amara is cute, but she's also a cranky, grouchy baby, and mostly prefers to play by herself. Their relationship doesn't improve much over the years, but when a baby brother enters the picture and later, something doesn't seem right between their parents, they realize they must figure out how to get along. They are sisters, after all. Raina uses her signature humor and charm in both present-day narrative and perfectly placed flashbacks to tell the story of her relationship with her sister, which unfolds during the course of a road trip from their home in San Francisco to a family reunion in Colorado.
