At long last, Valiant is proud to present your first look inside 4001 A.D.: WAR MOTHER #1 – an all-new, self-contained one-shot exploding out of the pages of the summer's most ambitious crossover event and launching a major new character into the future of the Valiant Universe! First announced as a top-secret first appearance spinning out of Valiant's acclaimed 4001 A.D. event, War Mother steps out of a highly speculated-upon cameo in last summer’s best-selling BOOK OF DEATH … and into her armor-piercing full-length debut right here when New York Times best-selling writer Fred Van Lente (IVAR, TIMEWALKER) and spectacular rising star Tomás Giorello (Conan) introduce the 41st century's most formidable fighter!

Now, after months of speculation, Valiant can now showcase the devastating world of 41st century Earth that War Mother inhabits … and reveal that artist Tomás Giorello is the latest high-caliber talent to join Valiant's star-studded roster of exclusive creators.

After making his Valiant debut as the lead cover artist for BLOODSHOT REBORN's current "BLOODSHOT ISLAND" storyline, Giorello's first full-length interior work for the award-winning publisher finally arrives in 4001 A.D.: WAR MOTHER #1 - a much anticipated debut that will force War Mother out of the tribe she was born to protect … and onto the front lines of the Valiant Universe alongside Earth's most powerful heroes of this millennia or the next!

In the 41st century, much of the planet has been reduced to a barren wasteland. New Japan orbits the Earth as a floating oasis that towers over the ashes of the old world. The survivors of this desolate new age, robbed of the planet’s once-lush natural resources, must endure great hardships to survive. Amidst the devastation, one outpost of scientific knowledge has thrived by adhering to a strict code of isolation. But even the denizens of this walled city must venture out into the wasteland to gather supplies from the remnants of what was. This task is designated to one and one alone: War Mother.

But all is not peaceful, even in New Japan. When the space-faring empire begins jettisoning city-sized sectors to Earth during the onset of a civil war, War Mother is called upon with a new mission: mega-salvage! Armed with a newly born sentient sniper rifle, War Mother is a one-woman army bent on sacking the crash-landed sector’s technology-laden debris for anything of value to her tribe. But, as calm turns to chaos, Sector 8146 will reveal a telling secret about Earth’s true order that will collide War Mother against her community, her code, and her calling … and bring destruction down upon one of humanity’s last surviving outposts of order.

Giorello's previous credits include multiple Conan and Star Wars series for Dark Horse, as well as Batman & Robin, Green Lantern: New Guardians, and Superman/Batman for DC Entertainment. As the latest artist to join Valiant's stable of exclusive talents, Giorello is the next addition to an acclaimed line-up of Valiant-exclusive creators that also includes Raul Allen (WRATH OF THE ETERNAL WARRIOR), David Baron (BLOODSHOT REBORN), Diego Bernard (NINJAK), Doug Braithwaite (BLOODSHOT U.S.A.), CAFU (RAI), Khari Evans (HARBINGER), Robert Gill (BOOK OF DEATH), Trevor Hairsine (DIVINITY II), Clayton Henry (SAVAGE), David Lafuente (A&A: THE ADVENTURES OF ARCHER & ARMSTRONG), Lewis LaRosa (SAVAGE), Pere Perez (FAITH), Brian Reber (4001 A.D.: WAR MOTHER), Juan Jose Ryp (BRITANNIA), and Mico Suayan (BLOODSHOT REBORN).

I've been enjoying the 4001 material more than I thought I would -- usually potential futures don't feel like they "matter," and Rai hasn't been all that interesting in the past. But this is a huge, sprawling story involving lots of moving parts and characters, and the quality has been really high. Plus, I suspect it will have a big impact on the post-X-O Manowar Valiant Universe, so maybe it will "matter."

From the writer of INSEXTS  A-FORCE, and BOMBSHELLS and the artist of SUPERZERO, comes a new kind of road trip, a new kind of black comedy, and a new kind of coming-of-age.

If animals really did gain that level of intelligence, you can be sure that they'd hate our guts. I'm not sure how many dogs would still be "man's best friend."

BLOOD AND DUST #1

Publisher: ACTION LAB

Writers: MICHAEL R. MARTIN, ADAM ORNDORF

Art: ROY ALLEN MARTINEZ

Cover: BRETT WELDELE

Variant: ROY ALLAN MARTINEZ

$3.99

Remember when vampires were something you were scared of and didn’t fall in love with?

Michael R. Martin & Adam Orndorf, Co-Creators and Writers of Blood & Dust: The Life & Undeath of Judd Glenny do, and had one focus when writing this story: Create a world with vampires like no one had ever seen, and make them terrifying again.

With the illustrations of Roy Allan Martinez, colors of Raymund Lee, letters by Kel Nuttall and main covers by Brett Weldele, they brought together the perfect team to bring this terrifying family to life.

For 40 years Judd Glenny has hidden in the swamps of Boggy Depot, Oklahoma, a town too terrified to ever bother him or his family. Keeping his granddaughter Ruth chained up in the attic, too insane to care for her kids, Zeke, 10; Saul, 8; and Baby Hazel, 6, Judd is waiting out eternity in his own self-imposed Hell, babysitting the never-growing, never-maturing, and never-aging mistakes he made those 40 years ago.

But then comes a knock on the door …

Early reviews have been great!

“It’s about damn time someone came along and brought the gore back. Brought the violence back. Even better, they created a new lore that is different from anything I’ve ever read or seen on screen. And the best part so far … is that I still have no idea what is really going on.” -- Derek Williams, Talking Comicon

I'm all for vampires that are terrifying, and don't sparkle.

COUSIN JOSEPH (HC)

Publisher: LIVERIGHT

Writer/Art: JULES FEIFFER

$25.95

Meet Big Sam Hannigan. Tough, righteous, a man on a mission. Only problem is, it's the wrong mission. Big Sam sees himself as a righteous, truth-seeking patriot, defending the American way, as his Irish immigrant father would have wanted, against a rising tide of left-wing unionism, strikes, and disruption that plague his home town. At the same time he makes monthly, secret overnight trips on behalf of Cousin Joseph, a mysterious man on the phone he has never laid eyes on, to pay off Hollywood producers to ensure that they will film only upbeat films that idealize a mythic America: no warts, no injustice uncorrected, only happy endings. But Sam, himself, is not in for a happy ending, as step by step the secret of his unseen mentor's duplicity is revealed to him. Fast-moving action, violence, and murder in the noir style of pulps and forties films are melded in the satiric, sociopolitical Feifferian style to dig up the buried fearmongering of the past and expose how closely it matches the headlines, happenings, and violence of today.

If it's by Jules Feiffer, it's probably pretty good.

Titan Books and Bethesda Softworks are delighted to announce a multi-platform publishing partnership for Dishonored 2, the next chapter in the award-winning Dishonored saga by Arkane Studios. This exciting multi-platform publishing programme from Titan Books and the Titan Comics divisions includes three original novels, an all-new new four-part comic miniseries, and a graphic novel collection that will bridge the story of events between Dishonored, the first-person action blockbuster and winner of more than 100 "Game of the Year" awards, including the BAFTA for ‘Best Game of 2012’, and the upcoming highly-anticipated new installment to the series, Dishonored 2.

Dishonored Comic Collection from Titan Comics:

The first official Dishonored tie-in comic in the series from Titan Comics will release in August 2016. Three additional installments in the comic series will follow, releasing in September and October. The series will be collected together for a graphic novel, which will be available in November 2016.

The city of Dunwall; whaling capital of Gristol and industrial hub of the Empire of the Isles.

Twelve years have passed since Corvo Attano scuppered the Lord Regent’s duplicitous plot against the crown and cleared his name of the Empress Jessamine’s murder.

Now a little older and perhaps a little wiser, Corvo sets his sights on the future and securing an apprentice to continue his legacy.  But when confronted by an impossible face from his past, the supernaturally-gifted assassin finds himself drawn once again into an otherworldly conspiracy, one that threatens to shake the very foundations of his ancient city.

Series writer Gordon Rennie is a stalwart of the UK comic scene whose writing credits include the original series, White Trash, as well as his work for cult magazine, 2000 AD, on iconic characters and properties, including Judge Dredd and Rogue Trooper. Rennie is joined by artists Andrea Olimpieri (pencils/inks) and Marcelo Maiolo (colourist) whose art credits include Batman Beyond for DC Comics and Old Man Logan for Marvel Comics.

Dishonored - The Corroded Man from Titan Books:

Titan Books will publish Dishonored - The Corroded Man in September 2016, the first in a series of three books by Adam Christopher. The first book will be followed by two forthcoming novels, scheduled to be released in 2017, that will continue the adventures of the game’s protagonists - Corvo Attano and Emily Kaldwin.

Dishonored - The Corroded Man takes place following the events of Dishonored, Arkane’s blockbuster action-adventure game, which released in 2012 to huge critical and commercial success, and bridges the story through to the highly-anticipated Dishonored 2.

Adam Christopher is a novelist, comic writer, and award-winning editor. The author of The Burning Dark and the LA Trilogy and co-writer of The Shield for Dark Circle Comics, he has also written original tie-in fiction for the Elementary television series, including Elementary - The Ghost Line, a current Scribe 2016 award nominee.

Fans of the acclaimed Dishonored game franchise will be delighted to be able to immerse themselves further than ever before into the game’s world with Titan Books and Titan Comics providing the perfect companion material to the exciting next instalment of the game.

Dishonored 2 is slated to release worldwide on Friday, November 11, 2016 for the Xbox One, PlayStation® 4 computer entertainment system and PC. Play your way as a supernatural assassin in a world where mysticism and industry collide. Will you choose to play as Empress Emily Kaldwin or the royal protector, Corvo Attano? Will you make your way through the game unseen, make full use of its brutal combat system, or use a blend of both? How will you combine your character’s unique set of powers, weapons and gadgets to eliminate your enemies? The story responds to your choices, leading to intriguing outcomes, as you play through each of the game’s hand-crafted missions.

Here's another videogame turned comic book.

EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS' TARZAN: THE COMPLETE JOE KUBERT YEARS (TPB)

Publisher: DARK HORSE

Colorist: TATJANA WOOD

FC, 616 pages • TPB • 7'' x 10'' • $29.99 •Age range: 12

Tarzan tales from a storytelling master!

This huge archival collection -- featuring several Tarzan essays and original page layouts by Joe Kubert, along with collaborations with Russ Heath and Frank Thorne -- is a must-have for fans of timeless adventure tales and Kubert’s undeniable intensity and skill. Reprinting issues #207-235 of Kubert’s 1970s Tarzan run -- every issue that he wrote and drew!

Both Joe Kubert and John Buscema couldn't wait to draw Tarzan, and one would have to assume that it was from a childhood reading the "Tarzan" comic strip by Burne Hogarth (whose work obviously influenced both men). It was a different world then, where comic strips were not only where the best artists worked, but were the top tier of commercial art.

Something bad is coming. Something that could kill Heaven and Hell and the Earth itself: The Godeater. And the only thing standing its way is... Evil Ernie? We're probably all screwed. Dynamite Entertainment proudly welcomes Justin Jordan, the Harvey Award-winning writer of such horror hits as The Strange Talent of Luther Strode and Shadowman, as he debuts the all-new "Godeater" storyline, an event so epic in scope, it promises to shake the very foundations of the Chaos! universe!

EVIL ERNIE #1 comes jam-packed with additional content! As if one potential doomsday wasn't enough, Dynamite delves into the Chaos mythology in "Last Ditch Bitch," a serialized back-up feature that introduces Liv Halvorsen, lead singer of a Scandinavian Death Metal band... and an unwitting pawn in Ragnarok! Plus, this issue will include an in-depth interview with Justin Jordan about Evil Ernie, the Chaos! Comics universe, and more!

I find this character kinda juvenile. I don't mind silly -- I enjoy Deadpool and Harley Quinn -- but the humor in Evil Ernie strikes me as distinctly childish. OTOH, if you like Evil Ernie, um ... I could be wrong.

With great power ... comes great corruption. Superheroes are real. They walk the earth as gods among men. But the fairy tales of them protecting mankind and being heroes were all lies. Humans have become their slaves, fit only to serve their super powered masters. But in man the nature of the true hero still survives...and one group rises up to challenge their self-appointed masters. Can they hope to succeed or will their opposition only push mankind closer to extinction.

Here's another superhero dystopia, and there's nothing new there (I hardly need to point out the Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman archetypes, do I?). But I do have to ask about the title. Isn't a synonym for "Evil Heroes" just supervillains?

GUNS OF THE BLACK BAT #1

Publisher: MOONSTONE

Writer: RON FORTIER, AARON SHAPS

Art: SILVESTRE SZILAGYI

Cover: MICHAEL STRIBLING

$3.50

Dateline, 1938. Hitler and the Nazis have begun their plans to conquer the world. In the United States, the crimefighter known as the Black Bat encounters German spie exhibiting strange, unworldly powers. Have aliens infiltrated the Third Reich and is the threat to mankind greater than imagined? Hurriedly, the Bat assembles a team of specialists to help him confront this unknown foe -- Airboy, Domino Lady, Moon Man, Golden Amazon and more! They will become known as the Guns of the Black Bat!

Wait, wasn't the Black Bat recently being published by Dynamite? And we've seen all those other characters recently at other publishers too, haven't we? I know they're mostly public domain -- I get that. It just seems weird that these books are being published so close together. Isn't that the very definition of "confusion in the marketplace"?

The double-sized debut issue of the new sci-fi-rom-com-dram-actioner from the writer of THE BUNKER and the artist of MY LITTLE PONY -- wait, really? Okay. INVASION! Aliens are real. They're here, they're mean and they're standing in judgment over the citizens of Earth. Final countdown. Representing humanity (by some fluke) is your boy Jeff Steinberg. Romantically challenged idiot, video store clerk, constipated, confused, distractible. In other words, the planet is totally doomed. Also, robots!

Seems a little Hitchhiker's Guide to me. Which is OK -- I liked Hitchhiker's Guide!

Lady Killer 2 features Jones resuming her role as writer, artist, and cover illustrator, with colors by Dark Horse veteran Michelle Madsen. And to celebrate Dark Horse Comics’ thirtieth anniversary, artists Matteo Scalera and Moreno Dinisio are producing a special variant cover for issue #1.

The Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards 2016 recently nominated Lady Killer for Best Limited Series and Joëlle Jones for Best Penciller/Inker and Best Cover Artist.

Praise for Lady Killer:

Lady Killer is worth its weight in gold for the art alone, but the enigmatic Josie Schuller is the real appeal.” -- Newsarama

“A level of violence that can only be described as Mad Men’s Betty Draper meets Dexter.” -- Comic Book Resources

I loved the first series, especially the art, which is a beautiful tip of the hat to 1950s art, fashion and architecture. I'll be first in line for this one, too.

MARCH BOOK THREE (GN)

Publisher: TOP SHELF

U.S. REP. JOHN LEWIS, ANDRE AYDIN, NATE POWELL

A 256-page graphic novel with French flaps, 6.5” x 9.5” $19.99 (US)

"March is one of the most important graphic novels ever created — an extraordinary presentation of an extraordinary life, and proof that young people can change the world. I'm stunned by the power of these comics, and grateful that Congressman Lewis's story will enlighten and inspire future generations of readers and leaders." — Raina Telgemeier

By the fall of 1963, the Civil Rights Movement has penetrated deep into the American consciousness, and as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, John Lewis is guiding the tip of the spear. Through relentless direct action, SNCC continues to force the nation to confront its own blatant injustice, but for every step forward, the danger grows more intense: Jim Crow strikes back through legal tricks, intimidation, violence, and death. The only hope for lasting change is to give voice to the millions of Americans silenced by voter suppression: “One Man, One Vote.”

To carry out their nonviolent revolution, Lewis and an army of young activists launch a series of innovative campaigns, including the Freedom Vote, Mississippi Freedom Summer, and an all-out battle for the soul of the Democratic Party waged live on national television.

With these new struggles come new allies, new opponents, and an unpredictable new president who might be both at once. But fractures within the movement are deepening ... even as 25-year-old John Lewis prepares to risk everything in a historic showdown high above the Alabama river, in a town called Selma.

This August, Titan Comics is thrilled to team with NBA All-star and Polymath legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for Mycroft Holmes and the Apocalypse Handbook: a brand new standalone comic book adventure that uncovers the secrets of the elder Holmes brother.

Kareem’s passion for the character is evident, having already written a novel based around Mycroft. His Mycroft Holmes novel published in September 2015 to critical applause. Described by Academy Award winning screenwriter Robert Towne (Chinatown) as “beautifully written and full of intrigue,” the novel garnered high profile media attention around the globe with pieces appearing in Entertainment Weekly, Time Magazine, The Guardian and The London Times, and many more. Covering the announcement, The New York Times noted Abdul-Jabbar’s numerous credits even “rival [that of] Conan Doyle himself.”

An all-new adventure, The Apocalypse Handbook sees the diffident, brilliant Mycroft pulled into a globe-spanning adventure at the behest of Queen Victoria and a secret organization at the heart of the British government. A madman is on the loose with futuristic weaponry capable of destroying civilization in the most horrific manner. Can the smartest man in England set aside his idle, womanizing ways for long enough to track down the foe that may be his match?

Although the character appeared in only a handful of Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories, Sherlock’s elder brother Mycroft has gained increased mainstream awareness through appearances in smash-hit TV show Sherlock and CBS’s Elementary (as portrayed by Mark Gatiss and Rhys Ifans respectively). Charting his own course and centering Mycroft firmly at the heart of the narrative, Abdul-Jabbar’s devotion for the character was established in the novel Mycroft Holmes, for Titan Books last year.

This exciting comic series sees Abdul-Jabbar team with best-selling novelist Raymond Obstfeld (Joker and the Thief) to pen a fresh, all-new story that adds new revelations and insights into the life of Mycroft. The five-part serial features art by rising star Joshua Cassara (New Avengers, The Troop) and colorist Luis Guerrero (Doctor Who, Rivers of London, The Troop), along with a host of comics luminaries on its variant covers.

Didn't Mycroft exist in the original canon? For some reason I had the impression that he was enormously fat, and was, in effect, the first "C" (Commander) of internal security (what would become MI-5). Or was that just an invention of Alan Moore in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen?

Magnetic Press presents WARSHIP JOLLY ROGER Book One -- NO TURNING BACK. Created and illustrated by master artist Miquel Montllo and written by award winning author Sylvain Runberg (Millenium Trilogy, Orbital), this sweeping epic space opera is filled with the kind of gripping drama and explosive action that will instantly appeal to fans of Star Wars, Firefly and Battlestar Galactica.

Set in a gritty, star-spanning future, where mankind has colonized planets throughout the galaxy, former Confederation Commander Jon T. Munro was serving a life sentence for a war crime he was forced to commit, left to take the fall for the politicians and brass who were truly to blame. But now he is free, after a jailbreak gone awry, and in possession of the most powerful cruiser in the Confederate Armada, which he renamed “The Jolly Roger.”

On the run with a rag-tag crew of misfit ex-cons, his agenda is simple: JUSTICE.

BOOK ONE: NO TURNING BACK contains the first two chapters in this visually stunning sci-fi adventure. For more info check out the WARSHIP JOLLY ROGER webpage (http://www.magnetic-press.com/warship-jolly-roger/).

    WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING:

“The future is harrowing and bleak but Miquel Montllo’s lush environments will make you want to live there anyway. Absolutely gorgeous.” -- IVAN BRANDON (Drifter, VS, Viking)

"Jolly Roger is a spectacular space opera in the tradition of Star Wars with all the raw brutality of a spaghetti western. Themes of political corruption, loyalty, betrayal and bloody revenge are illustrated with beautifully expressive art that has the production values of big budget animation. Outstanding!” -- DAVID HINE (Bulletproof Coffin, X-Men, The Man Who Laughs)

"Stone cold beautiful and razor wire sharp. This is as good as comics get.” -- DONNY CATES (The Paybacks, Interceptor, Ghost Fleet)

This looks interesting, but I haven't seen it yet.

  • Didn't Mycroft exist in the original canon?

Mycroft is Doyle's creation. He's smarter than Holmes - Holmes himself says so - but he lacks his energy and is fat. He's not a security man, though. In his first appearance, "The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter", Holmes says he "audits the books in some of the government departments". In his second, "The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans", Holmes says he's a key civil servant who advises the government on important affairs. Wikipedia, which I used to write this answer, says he's mentioned in two other stories.

Christopher Lee played a thin Mycroft in Billy Wilder's The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970).

  • That's an answer I understand. I, too, like zombie stories. And I'm a big Ellis fan. Since we share that, and you don't like the book, it's likely I won't like it either.

However, "black gas" has now become a running joke in my household for use after Mexican meals.

    Detective 445 said:

  • Torchwood was the first of two Doctor Who spin-offs that were created while Russell T. Davies was show-runner.  It featured John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness, leader of a group of Earthbound alien fighters.  I never saw any of it, I was never a big Captain Jack fan, so I opted out of it, but I gather it was meant to be somewhat more "adult" in them than the main show.

The other spin-off was The Sarah Jane Adventures, which featured the late, great Elisabeth Sladen as the Doctor's former companion Sarah Jane Smith, who acted as a sort of mother figure to a gang of adolescent alien fighters. Much as I loved me some Lis Sladen, I've only seen a few episodes of this, but it was more "kid-oriented" than the parent show. I guess  that for me, the Doctor Who universe without the Doctor just isn't as interesting.

  • Boy, aliens must really need some fightin' if it takes two shows to do it.

Tough to picture John Barrowman as a rough, tough alien fighter after seeing him in his Squirrel Girl outfit.

He's not a bad actor, Barrowman, I just was never all that interested in the Doctor Who "Extended Universe".

    Superman vs. Aliens!

In the first ever collection of the DC/Dark Horse Superman crossover stories, the Man of Steel faces the universe’s deadliest foe, but is he truly strong enough to defeat the xenomorph? Follow the Last Son of Krypton through the world of Madman and explore the jungles of East Africa with him alongside Tarzan, son of the jungle. Collects Superman vs. Aliens Volume 1, Superman vs. Aliens Volume 2: God War, Superman/Tarzan: Sons of the Jungle and The Superman/Madman Hullabaloo.

    • Over 400 pages of material contains four full Superman arcs from Dan Jurgens, Chuck Dixon and Mike Allred, original covers and pinup and sketchbook art from the original creative teams.

    • In this 30th-anniversary year of Aliens, fans can rediscover the Man of Steel combating the xenomorph -- for the first time since 2002.

As you can see from the preview, some of these stories are terrific, and some aren't.

This volume has enough wonderful stories in it that I'm going to buy it, though! The two volumes of Superman/Aliens with art by Dan Jurgens/Kevin Nowlan and Jon Bogdanove, the Superman/Tarzan with art by Carlos Meglia are enough to bring me in. I've pre-ordered this from Amazon, and look forward to getting it in the mail.

  • MYCROFT HOLMES: THE APOCALYPSE HANDBOOK #1
Didn't Mycroft exist in the original canon? For some reason I had the impression that he was enormously fat, and was, in effect, the first "C" (Commander) of internal security (what would become MI-5). Or was that just an invention of Alan Moore in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen?

As was said, my understanding is that Mycroft was mentioned in the original stories but didn't participate. It was Alan Moore's idea to hint at his being "M" (not "C") in his League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I think Mycroft was thought to be "M" by the other characters while the real "M" was someone entirely different.
