ARCHIE #664
Art: FERNANDO RUIZ
Cover: DAN PARENT
Variant Cover: BEN CALDWELL
32-page, full color comic, $3.99 U.S.
Archie in “Game of Phones”: Winter is coming … a ten-year long winter -- which means ten years of school WITHOUT summer vacation! In a world of many kingdoms, the noble Archie Starch lives with his family and his pal Snowhead in the Kingdom of Riveros. Meanwhile, in the Kingdom of Lodgister, the wealthy princess Veronica Lodgister’s greatest desire is to be this year’s Prom Queen. Her main rival for the throne is a new girl in school, Princess Betty Cooparian. In yet another kingdom dwell the Braggians, with the pompous, sneaky Prince Reggie who is determined to do whatever it takes to become Prom King -- even if that means faking his way to the top. Archie is ready to call his bluff and challenges him to a battle of the kingdoms on the Riveros High Football field. Which Kingdom will preside over all?
The more I look at artwork like Cover B above, the more sense I see in Archie's upcoming revamp. Now, don't get me wrong, I love me some Dan DeCarlo! I grew up admiring his work, and still love it. But that style probably seems old and creaky to the tween and teen girls, the demographic that used to be the backbone of Archie sales. Today's girls -- and, yes, the boys like me that bought Archies in junior high -- will probably respond better to a more realistic style, like Cover B.
Also, the farther Archie comics get from a cartoon style, the longer it will take for kids to outgrow Archies (and maybe, for the first time, a great many won't). That's one of the avowed goals of CEO Jon Goldwater, and a turn to the more realistic is an obvious first step toward that goal.
In the meantime, we can enjoy Dan Parent & Co. in The Last Days of the DeCarlo House Style, as below.

Interestingly, the cover that came with the solicitations three or four months ago had Jughead running from the food. That makes more sense, given that Jug and food are virtually synonymous. But sometime between then and now someone decided Archie was a better call. I'm curious why.

Dynamite Entertainment proudly announces the October release of The Art of Army of Darkness, a hardcover collection of the very best cover and pin-up artwork from their ten years of publishing Army of Darkness.
Since July 2004, Ash Williams -- the reluctant hero of the cult classic film, Army of Darkness -- has been an integral part of Dynamite Entertainment's publishing line. Throughout the years, dozens of highly skilled comic artists have drawn and painted the hero, his undead adversaries, curvaceous love interests, and medieval armaments (like his trademark chainsaw and affectionately named "boomstick").
The Art of Army of Darkness gorgeous hardcover art book stands as a testament to the unyielding spirit of a horror cinema icon, as captured by some of the comic industry's most beloved talents: J. Scott Campbell (Danger Girl), Arthur Suydam (Marvel Zombies), Nick Bradshaw (Wolverine and the X-Men), John Bolton (The Books of Magic), Ben Templesmith (30 Days of Night), Tim Seeley (Hack/Slash), George Perez (Avengers), and many more.
The cover to The Art of Army of Darkness features artwork from the original movie poster by acclaimed painter Michael Hussar, a fan-favorite image which also served as the debut cover to Dynamite's first Army of Darkness comic book series.
Army of Darkness is a 1992 fantasy/comedy film with strong horror elements starring Bruce Campbell (Burn Notice) and Embeth Davidtz, the third installment in a trilogy featuring reluctant hero Ash Williams. Directed by Sam Raimi (Spider-Man), the film saw its tough-as-nails, wise-cracking protagonist transported from the modern era to the Dark Ages in his continuing war against demonic evil. Army of Darkness generated a dedicated fan following for its premise and lead actor.
The Art of Army of Darkness will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors' August Previews catalog, the premiere source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in October. Fantasy fans are encouraged to reserve copies of The Art of Army of Darkness with their local comic book retailers, or by placing preorders through online booksellers.

LEGENDERRY: RED SONJA #1 (OF 5)
Writer: MARC ANDREYKO
Art: ANEKE
Cover A: JOE BENITEZ
32 pages / Teen + / $3.99
One of the breakout stars of LEGENDERRY gets her own series! After sailing the high seas, Red Sonja returns to the Big City for some R&R, but when she tries to stop a simple kidnapping, she discovers that things ain't so simple! Red finds herself caught up in an adventure that will take her from the city to the sea to -- well, you'll find out! And who is that mysterious figure lurking in the shadows? All -- well, some anyway, will be revealed in a story that had to be called "The Body Electric"!
This book looks interesting, but moreover, it is more in line with Red Sonja's original story.
For those who don't know, Robert E. Howard created the character in the short story "Red Sonya of Rogatino." That story, the only one REH wrote about the red-haired warrior, took place in the late 16th century, during the Ottoman invasion of Europe.
It was Roy Thomas who made the character a contemporary of Conan. He changed the name slightly -- Sonja instead of Sonya -- and made her Hyrkanian, which appears to correspond in to modern-day Poland-Ukraine, which is where Sonya was from. (The historical Hyrkania is in central Asia, around north Turkey and Turkmenistan. The lesson here is: Don't learn your world history from comic books.)
This book appears to be set in the golden age of piracy, some 50-75 years later that Sonya's era. Not identical, but a lot closer than the Hyborian Age!

First issue of an all-new arc!
If this book looks familiar, that's because it was in last week's Comics Guide, because Previews said it was coming out. Evidently, it didn't.
But as much as I've complained about IDW's spotty scheduling, I have to say that their current scheduling problems aren't their fault -- it's due to the labor unrest on the West Coast. As of this writing, there will be NO IDW books next week, on Feb. 18.
So let's be patient, shall we? The books will get here eventually.

BANG!TANGO (TPB)
Story: JOE KELLY
Art: ADRIAN SIBAR
128 pages, paperback, color, Mature, $14.99
Collects BANG!TANGO #1-6.
The horrors of Vinnie’s years in the New York mob are a distant memory. Now he has a new life as the best tango dancer San Francisco has ever seen … until Autumn blows into town. Autumn: the one who broke Vinnie’s heart. In BANG!TANGO, coming from Image Comics in February, Autumn pulls Vinnie into one last job -- robbing The Jock, the mob boss who wants Vinnie dead, so that Autumn can pay for gender reassignment surgery that will make her the woman Vinnie always wanted.
Written by Joe Kelly (I KILL GIANTS, BAD DOG) with art by Adrian Sibar, BANG!TANGO is shocking, seductive and visually explosive. Originally published by Vertigo in 2009, it is now being collected for the first time by Image with a near complete artistic face lift by co-creator Sibar.
“I'd never tried a crime book before, but knew that if I was going to go there, I was really going there,” said Kelly. “The characters in Bang!Tango aren't just broken, they're shattered. They are also complicated, sexually provocative, over-the-top and on occasion ... even a bit redeemable. But this is a crime noir ... no one really gets out clean, do they?”
Kelly describes BANG!TANGO as a deconstruction of crime story archetypes -- the “Tough Guy” and “Femme Fatale” are altered in a way that redefines those roles. The result is a book that is violent, sexy, and perverse -- while simultaneously an examination of violence, sex and perversion.
“Bang!Tango is one of my more offbeat comic children, and I love every twisted bit of it,” Kelly added.
This is such a wacky premise I'm going to have to read it. Have. To. Read it.

A science fiction take on the Women-in-Prison exploitation cinema trope, BITCH PLANET follows five prisoners on an all-female penal planet, ready to make their escape by way of a gladiatorial exhibition against a team of visiting male prisoners. There are five women -- all ridiculous and real -- and all very different. One shouldn’t be there. The other four are unrepentant and guilty as Hell.

SATELLITE SAM #11

Act three of SATELLITE SAM starts here with a bang -- is someone at the LeMonde Network a killer? What happened to the girl who knows all the secrets? Will the dark secret that threatens the whole show come out in the gossip columns? The fabulous fifties were never so filthy.
OK, so for about six issues every cover had two chicks on the cover, usually in suggestive poses. But for the last several issues, the covers only show ONE chick, and now she's on the run. My theory? She KILLED the other chick to get the covers for herself, buried her on the back cover, but was discovered by a cop from some other cover and now is on the run!
OK, that's nonsense. But when the covers have absolutely nothing to do with the story inside, I think we're allowed to make up our own stories!

STARLIGHT (TPB)
Story by MARK MILLAR
Art by GORLAN PARLOV
Colors by IVE SVORCINA
Cover by JOHN CASSADAY
160 PAGES / FC / T+ / $14.99
Collects STARLIGHT #1-6.
Forty years ago, Air Force test pilot Duke McQueen saved the universe. Then he came home from a splendorous alien world, married his best girl, settled down, had two sons, and grew old. His stories of his journey across galaxies became the subject of whispered ridicule. But in STARLIGHT, the Image Comics graphic novel by superstar comics writer Mark Millar (JUPITER’S LEGACY, Kick-Ass) and artist Goran Parlov, Duke -- alone after his sons leave home and his wife dies -- gets a message from space: the Universe needs a hero again.
A sweeping science fiction epic, STARLIGHT features Millar’s most heartfelt storytelling to date, while Parlov depicts with equal skill a dazzling alien planet and and old man’s loneliness with his gorgeous, Moebius-esque art. Duke is returning to Tantalus a legendary hero, but is he still the man he was forty years ago?
“The whole character just seemed to pour out the moment I started writing him,” said Millar of Duke in an interview on Image Comics’ website, “and I found myself really caring about him. His life is like any of our father's or grandfather's, except for this one amazing thing that happened forty years ago, and so as the first issue closes and he gets a chance to go back we're really with him on that journey.”
A must-read for anyone who wants their sci-fi to have a sense of wonder, STARLIGHT will be in comic book stores on February 11 and in bookstores on February 24. It is available for pre-order now. It is currently in development at Fox as a feature film.
Praise for STARLIGHT:
“Millar and Parlov have succeeded in telling this adventure story by understanding the genre and what makes it work, not by attempting to reinvent or subvert it. The heroes are heroic and the villains are villainous. The action is exciting and the emotions are sentimental. ... Rather than pointing out the farcical nature of science fiction pulps, Millar and Parlov embrace what is great about Starlight’s influences.” -- Chase Magnett, Comicbook.com
“Eschewing fake cynicism and the compulsion to sell comics by scandalizing his reader, he focuses on telling a good story about youth and age, second chances, and the great adventure of life.” -- John Parker, Comics Alliance
“Starlight is a joy in every sense of the word, as is the collaboration between Miller and Parlov.” -- Jeff Lake, IGN
“It’s the rare book that knows its responsibility to its audience is to inspire as well as entertain.” -- Gavin Rehfeldt, Doom Rocket

THEY’RE NOT LIKE US #1 (2ND PTG)
Story: ERIC STEPHENSON
Art: SIMON GANE & JORDIE BELLAIRE
Cover: SIMON GANE & FONOGRAFIKS
24 PAGES / FC / M / $2.99
The newly launched THEY’RE NOT LIKE US series by Eisner-nominated writer and Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson (NOWHERE MEN) and artist Simon Gane (The Vinyl Underground, Paris) has been praised by critics and fans alike for its rapid pace and jaw-dropping cliffhanger. The first issue is slated for a second printing in order to meet growing customer demand.
Comic Book Resources says of the series, “They're Not Like Us #1 is definitely not like any other teenage mutant comic, and that's what makes Stephenson and Gane's issue so strong.” Multiversity Comics praises it as “a beautifully constructed introduction to a complex examination of youth in revolt.”
We all have advantages over one another, but what if the next generation of youth were capable of things most of us could only imagine? What would they do—and who would they be? A doctor? An athlete? A soldier? A hero? Since the beginning of time we’ve all had to make choices about how to use our own unique abilities, but not like this generation... THEY’RE NOT LIKE US.
“Working with Simon on this, along with my Nowhere Men co-conspirators Jordie Bellaire and Fonografiks, has been amazing, but even so, I was completely unprepared for the incredibly warm response They’re Not Like Us has received,” said Stephenson. “We’re all looking forward to doing this for a good long while, so we’re really grateful to have such strong support right from the start.”
THEY’RE NOT LIKE US #1 remains available for purchase across all digital platforms, including the Image Comics website (imagecomics.com), the official Image Comics iOS app, Comixology’s website (comixology.com), iOS, Android, and Google Play.
TREES, VOL. 1 (TPB)
Story: WARREN ELLIS
Art / Cover: JASON HOWARD
160 PAGES / FC / M / $14.99
“Effectively shakes the status quo.” -- PASTE Magazine
Bestselling writer Warren Ellis (Moon Knight, Transmetropolitan) and artist Jason Howard -- the creative team known for their hit webcomic series SCATTERLANDS -- reunite for an all-new science fiction mystery filled with foreboding and laced with a Ballardian tone in TREES, VOL. 1, which collects the first eight issues of the ongoing series.
TREES is set in an uncertain future, ten years after they landed. All over the world. Standing on the surface of the Earth like trees, exerting their silent pressure on the world, as if the planet was uninhabited and nothing was under foot. Ten years since we learned that there is intelligent life in the universe, but that they did not recognize us as intelligent or alive.
TREES looks at a near-future world where life goes on in the shadows of the Trees: in China, where a young painter arrives in the “special cultural zone” of a city under a Tree; in Italy, where a young woman under the menacing protection of a fascist gang meets an old man who wants to teach her terrible skills; and in Svalbard, where a research team is discovering, by accident, that the Trees may not be dormant after all, and the awful threat they truly represent.
"I wrote Trees for Jason, because nobody understood how brilliant a comics artist he is,” said Ellis. “And I wrote it for me, because I was interested in how the massive and strange things in our lives bend the world around them and make our lives weird and dangerous while we desperately try to pretend that everything is normal."
TREES, Vol. 1 hits shelves on 2/11 and will be available for $14.99.
Praise for TREES:
“Ellis still manages to ignite a creative flare that effectively shakes the status quo. … Trees finds the writer again doing what he does best -- the unexpected.” -- PASTE Magazine
“I think my favorite part of Warren Ellis at the wheel of a comic is that you really never know what you are going to get.” -- ScienceFiction.com
“The book's large scope is intriguing, made even more so when considering that much of humanity's demise is self-inflicted. … Ellis and Howard appear prepped to deliver a uniquely exciting read.” -- IGN
“Between this and Moon Knight it's great to see Ellis not just writing comics, but writing excellent comics.” -- Comic Book Resources
“Trees is certainly worth a continued watch, especially given Jason Howard's art. He seamlessly balances both line work and color art resulting in a story that is well-paced and makes use of colors that provide emphasis in all the right moments.” -- Newsarama

MAGNETIC PRESS
DAOMU (HC)
Writer: XU "KENNEDY" LEI
Design/Illustration: CONCEPT ART HOUSE
244 PGS / 8.5” x 11” / HC / $29.99
Magnetic Press and Evertold are in the final stages of production on a hardcover graphic novel adaptation of the best-selling novel series “DAOMU”, written by Chinese author Xu “Kennedy” Lei. The adaptation, designed and illustrated by Concept Art House, was overseen by Kennedy Xu himself, and introduces his popular world of international tomb robbing to the western audience for the first time.
The original novel on which the graphic novel is based, “DAO MU BI JI”, sold over 3 million copies as of 2010, with an estimated 20M copies in circulation on the black market. Its massive popularity has spawned numerous volumes in the series, defining an entire sub-genre of imitators, and making Xu one of the most in-demand novelists in China, where he is considered “China’s Stephen King.” Several film and television projects are currently in development.
The book tells the story of a young Chinese American, Sean Wu, who is called back to China when his estranged father reappears, only to be murdered in front of him. He is quickly pulled into a web of mystery and intrigue stretching back many generations, introducing him to the legacy of the Daomu, a group of international tomb robbers who race through a globe-spanning labyrinth of ancient catacombs in seek of ageless artifacts that could either save or destroy humanity.
Illustrated in lush, cinematic, painted panels by Ken Chou and the team of artists at Concept Art House, the graphic novel adaptation brings Kennedy Xu’s epic universe to gritty, tactile life. With a background in cinematic production design for film and video games, the graphic novel’s presentation eschews traditional “comic book” art in favor of richly defined painted detail.
DAOMU will represent the first title published under the Evertold Inc banner, a label designed by James Zhang and Matthew Le Merle to bring exciting adventures to visually breathtaking life.
"Daomu is an enormous phenomenon across China with tens of millions of fans clamoring for more books, comics, films and TV adaptions of the characters and their adventures,” says James Zhang of Evertold, who brought the project into Evertold. “The moment I heard about the books and spoke with the author, Kennedy, I was convinced that this amazing novel would resonate with readers around the world. With this first graphic comic collection let the journey begin."
A trailer for the graphic novel is now available online, and can be viewed here:
The 244-page, 8.5” x 11”, hardcover edition will feature a soft-touch cover laminate with intricate glossed filigree and a ribbon book mark. It will be released in December, and will be available wherever graphic novels and books are sold.
For more information about DAOMU, please visit www.magnetic-press.com.
I haven't read anything by Magnetic Press yet, but you have to their PR department a four-star rating. Top flight, guys.

The original Dark Lord of the Sith stars in his first ongoing series!
Ever since Darth Vader made his first on-screen appearance, he became the one of the most popular villains to ever haunt an audience’s dreams! Now, follow Vader straight from the ending of A NEW HOPE (and the pages of the new STAR WARS comic book) into his own series, showing the Empire’s war with the Rebel Alliance from the other side! Writer Kieron Gillen (Uncanny X-Men, Journey Into Mystery, Iron Man) and artist Salvador Larroca (Invincible Iron Man, X-Men: No More Humans) bring us a peek behind the mask of evil!
The return of the Rebel Alliance to Marvel Comics also invites the return of its opposition, the Imperial Forces of the Galactic Empire and in February 2015, Kieron Gillen plans to delve into the psyche of one of the vilest villains of all time with the new ongoing series DARTH VADER. Witness the struggle for the freedom of an entire galaxy – from the Dark Side!
“Vader's the sole survivor of the greatest military disaster in history – and a disaster that he definitely had a hand in by letting the rebels escape with the plans for the Death Star. This is not a thing which leaves you in anybody's good books, let alone the Emperor’s,” says writer Kieron Gillen. “The great thing about this period [between Star Wars: A New Hope and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back] is what we don't see on the screen. Vader learns who Luke Skywalker is at some point between the two movies, to choose but one example.”
