COMICS GUIDE FOR FEB. 18, 2015
Titles listed in the Comics Guide come from the weekly list at the Diamond Comic Distributors Inc. website, and are subject to change. The information in the Comics Guide comes not only from Diamond but from solicitations, press releases and previews released by the publishers, except for random comments by Captain Comics (in blue)
THE CAPTAIN'S BEST BETS
Here art the Captain's top books of the week. For more information on these books and the entire list, continue to "This Week's Comics" below.
EI8HT #1 ($3.50, Dark Horse): A chrononaut lost in the harsh temporal dimension "The Meld" has no memories of who he is or where (or when) he's from. A time-travel mystery, featuring the art of Rafael Albuquerque (American Vampire), the best artist named for a city in comics! (Sorry, Bobby London.)
KING: MANDRAKE THE MAGICIAN #1 (of 4, $3.99, Dynamite): In honor of King Features' 100th anniversary, Dynamite is publishing five miniseries featuring five of their top characters, which will dovetail in a crossover at the end. That sounds like a lot of of fun!
MULTIVERSITY: MASTERMEN #1 ($4.99, DC Comics): Featuring the Quality Comics characters vs. the Nazi Justice League of Earth-10, where Germany won World War II. Can't wait!
PIRATE EYE: EXILED FROM EXILE #1 (of 4, $3.99, Action Lab): This genre mash-up mixes hard-boiled detective fiction with pirates. Yes, pirates!
RED SONJA #100 ($7.99, Dynamite): An oversize celebration issue with multiple writers and artists celebrating the Hyrkanian's 10 years with Dynamite. If you're a Sonja fan, this is for you!
SECRET IDENTITIES #1 ($3.50, Image): I am honestly not a bit interested in titles from outside the Big Two that take their archtype characters, do paper-thin alterations and use them in deadly what-if scenarios. I don't read Sidekicks, for example, because it looks like "What If Robin Went Bad and Tried to Kill Batman?" That sort of thing. Why? Well, I think one reason is that I get all the superhero stuff I need from that actual Big Two, and look to Image & Co. for something different. But also because, with Multiversity, Secret Wars, What If ...?, Elseworlds and the like, I can or have read just about every permutation of the basic superhero archetypes that I want or need using the REAL characters instead of pastiches. But I'll give Secret Identities ("What If the Justice League Had a Traitor?") a try, simply due to the presence of Jay Faeber, whose Noble Causes ("What If Superhero Comics Were Written Like Actual Soap Operas?") I enjoyed.
SILK #1 ($3.99, Marvel): Amazing Spider-Man scribe Dan Slott says the issues featuring Silk had to go back to press multiple times, so this really is a new series that "YOU DEMANDED!"
THE THRILLING ADVENTURE HOUR PRESENTS: SPARKS NEVADA: MARSHAL ON MARS #1 (of 4, $3.99, Image): Sounds like a Saturday morning cartoon Western in outer space. Which sounds like something I wish I'd been able to see as a kid!

PIRATE EYE: EXILED FROM EXILED #1 (of 4)
Art/Cover: CARL YONDER
32pgs / FC / Teen / $3.99 (reg.) $4.99 (var.)
An old enemy exposes a secret that forces Smitty to flee for his life. Now, with a price on his head on land and at sea, Smitty will have to survive long enough to find out what went wrong, how to make it right ... and who is responsible. Variant painted cover by series artist Carl Yonder, limited to 1,500 copies!
Pirate Eye, the genre mash-up that took many by surprise is back! Pirate Eye: Exiled from Exile, written by Josiah Grahn with art by Carl Yonder, is now a four issue monthly mini-series. For the first issue of the series, there is a special variant cover painted by series artist Carl Yonder, limited to 1500 copies!
Combining elements of pirates and noir, Pirate Eye is the story of Smitty, an ex-pirate turned detective. Banished from the sea, he is forced to take up residence in a port, relying on his brigand-honed skills as a ‘finder’ to make a living-until an old enemy exposes a secret that forces Smitty to flee for his life. With a price on his head on land and at sea, Smitty will have to survive long enough to find out what went wrong, how to make it right, and who is responsible.
Pirate Eye returns to stores as a four issue monthly tale starting in January, building upon everything from the first four one-shot Pirate Eye stories. Pirate Eye continues the tradition of using “the best of both genres without ever resorting to the clichés of either (PositivelyNerdy.com)."
Whether you are a new Pirate Eye fan or have been following the book all along, this is the perfect jumping on point for pirate, detective or comic fans.
“As if they possessed their own story-telling treasure map, Grahn and Yonder have stumbled onto a gold mine of possibilities with Pirate Eye. But rather than horde the treasure themselves, they’ve decided to share it with all of us (PositvelyNerdy.com).”
“The story and art, work very well together and support each other to produce a great story. After seeing the preview I can’t say that I was shocked by how good it turned out, but I never expected this to be this damn good.(ComicBastards.com)”

Writers: JOELLE JONES, JAMIE S. RICH
Art/Cover: JOELLE JONES
FC, 32 pages; Miniseries, $3.50
Dark Horse is proud to announce that the first issue of Joëlle Jones, Jamie S. Rich, and Laura Allred’s Lady Killer has sold out at the distributor level and will receive a second printing!
Josie Schuller is a picture-perfect homemaker, wife, and mother -- but she’s also a ruthless, efficient killer for hire! A brand-new original comedy series that combines the wholesome imagery of early 1960s domestic bliss with a tightening web of murder, paranoia, and cold-blooded survival, Lady Killer has received acclaim from creators and critics alike.
“The best comics feature great talent throwing together the stuff that gets them most excited, like Mike Mignola on Hellboy, or Eric Powell on The Goon, or Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips on The Fade Out,” said Dark Horse’s editor in chief, Scott Allie. “Joëlle’s drawn a lot of other people’s stories, but only she could’ve used midcentury fashion, espionage, and ultraviolence to create such a perfectly modern comic.”
To reflect the absolute killing the issue’s first print run made in the direct market, the second-printing cover will feature a special blood-red color scheme.
Find out why the critics are raving. Order Lady Killer #1 today through your local retailer!
Praise for Lady Killer #1:

“Dark Horse has spared no expense in making this miniseries loaded with talent.” -- Comic Book Resources’ Robot 6
“Jones brings a new level of polish to her artwork on this title, using a clean, confident line that gives Lady Killer a slick retro look.” -- The A.V. Club

"LIFE AND DEATH OF THE PARTY" -- Alice Cooper, the Nightmare Lord, has reclaimed the seat of power in his own dark realm. It's time to celebrate with a full-on tour of the weird dreamworld that our hero calls home ... but there's something sinister lurking in the shadows. Who is Doubting Thomas, and what does he want with Alice? It's a done-in-one tale of terror!
I'm not complaining, but the decision to make all of the covers to this series so similar that you could skip an issue thinking you already had it is questionable.![1801384938?profile=RESIZE_180x180](https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1801384938?profile=RESIZE_180x180)

Paizo, Inc., leading publisher of tabletop roleplaying and adventure card games, and Dynamite Entertainment, publisher of best-selling comic book titles, announce today Pathfinder Origins, the next comic series based on the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.
An exciting new Pathfinder adventure begins! To prove themselves to the Pathfinder Society, Valeros the fighter and his companions must recount tales of their early exploits in a world beset by magic and evil. In this issue, Valeros crosses swords with the brazen barbarian Amiri when both serve as hired guards escorting a doomed caravan through the treacherous Bloodsworn Vale. Sword and sorcery thrills from Pathfinder publisher Erik Mona (Pathfinder: Goblins!) and art from rising star Tom Garcia (Mercy Thompson)! Contains pull-out poster map and official Pathfinder RPG bonus encounter!
The Pathfinder Origins series will tell the tales of the early days of the Pathfinder iconic heroes. The series will contain 6 issues, written by Pathfinder developers Erik Mona (Paizo Publisher and Chief Creative Officer), F. Wesley Schneider (Paizo Editor-in-Chief), and James Sutter (Paizo Senior Editor).
Each issue features one of the main Pathfinder comics characters (Valeros, Seoni, Harsk, Merisiel, Kyra, and Ezren) in an early adventure that sees them team up with another Pathfinder iconic hero who has not yet appeared in the comics format.
"The Paizo senior editorial team is thrilled to get a chance to pen new stories for the iconic Pathfinder characters we created," said Erik Mona, Paizo Publisher. "Because the tales are coming directly from the source, Pathfinder Origins reveals more about the Pathfinder world than we've yet seen in comics, with scenes in a half-dozen different nations, featuring all twelve of our core iconic characters, plus some fun extras like Hellknights, devils, chupacabras, and more!"
The series will kick off in February 2015 with Issue #1, in which Valeros crosses swords with the brazen barbarian Amiri when both serve as hired guards escorting a doomed caravan through the treacherous Bloodsworn Vale. Script by Erik Mona (Pathfinder: Goblins!) and art by Tom Garcia (Mercy Thompson). Each issue will contain a pull-out poster map, an official Pathfinder RPG bonus encounter, and collectible variant covers.
Obviously, Cover D is an homage to Uncanny X-Men #142.

With the Great Champion away, the city is vulnerable to Goodfoot's machinations.
THE AUTUMNLANDS: TOOTH & CLAW, the bestselling fantasy epic from writer Kurt Busiek (Marvels, Astro City), artist Benjamin Dewey (I Was the Cat, Tragedy Series), Eisner-winning colorist Jordie Bellaire (THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS, PRETTY DEADLY), and letterer John Roshell of Comicraft, will feature the bold and enchanting artwork of Karl Kerschl (Gotham Academy, The Abominable Charles Christopher).
“I've been a huge fan of Karl Kerschl's for years,” said Busiek. “Not only is he a brilliant artist, but in Charles Christopher, he's proved that he can draw animals more expressively that just about anyone—he's up there with Walt Kelly. So I was thrilled he was up for doing an AUTUMNLANDS cover, and his portrait of Councillor Sandorst is so perfect Ben Dewey said Karl should take over the book. I think we'll stick with Ben, but damn, that's a sweet cover ...!”

NEW STORY ARC!
“Manifest Destiny combines the revisionist history of Sleepy Hollow with the ensemble-based survival horror of The Walking Dead, a premise that has proven immensely engaging over the past year thanks to Dingess’ balance of visceral terror, emotional drama, and dark comedy.” —The AV Club
A hit historical fantasy adventure series from Skybound/Image, MANIFEST DESTINY by Chris Dingess and Matthew Roberts sets sail for all-new adventures in its third story arc. Readers new and old will want to hop on board for the journey as the crew explores the uncharted American plains and encounters all manner of monstrous horrors.
In MANIFEST DESTINY #13, the crew ventures deeper into the heartland, the expedition discovers another arch -- which can only signal new trouble -- and Sacagawea experiences complications with her pregnancy...
Dingess hinted: "With this arc, we're hoping to provide an answer or two regarding the bigger narrative of Lewis and Clark's journey, while making readers ask a whole new slew of questions."

Fan favorite writers Brian Joines (KRAMPUS!, Noble Causes) and Jay Faerber (COPPERHEAD, GRAVEYARD SHIFT) team up with artists Ilias Kyriazis (Blood Opera, Manifesto) and Charlie Kirchoff (Doctor Who) to introduce readers to their new favorite supergroup, The Front Line, in SECRET IDENTITIES -- coming from Image Comics this February.
In SECRET IDENTITIES #1, the supergroup known as The Front Line has just invited the new hero Crosswind to join them. But what they don't know is that Crosswind is a mole, sent to learn all their secrets. And the Front Line has LOTS of secrets…
"Brian and I have been friends for a long time, and one of our common interests is super-heroes,” said Faerber. “So it only made sense that our first writing collaboration would be on a project like this. And Ilias' art is explodes off the page, mixing a classic super-hero style with an alternative sensibility."
"It's great to be dipping my toe into super-hero waters,” added Joines. “And to be doing it with someone with a track record like Jay is a true thrill. On top of that, watching Ilias bring these characters, some of whom have been warming the bench in my head for a very long time, to life with such vibrant style and energy… absolutely amazing."
While issue #1 introduces Crosswind as a traitor, what readers won’t know is what form his betrayal will take. When will he turn on the team? How will he do it? While he bides his time gaining their trust, he must also learn to act like a hero. Is there a chance that acting like a hero will actually turn him into one?

Straight from the pages of Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Verse comes a brand new ongoing series starring the newest heroine of the Marvel Universe. Today, Marvel is proud to present your first look at SILK #1, the new series writer Robbie Thompson (writer for TV’s Supernatural) and rising star artist Stacey Lee!
Cindy Moon exploded out of her bunker and into the Marvel Universe in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man and she never looked back. Bit by the same radioactive spider that gave Peter Parker his powers on that fateful day, she’s spent her years locked away in a bunker, safe from the threat of Morlun and the Inheritors. Since then, she’s saved Peter Parker’s life (more than once), fought alongside Spider-Woman, braved the Spider-Verse and more!
“Cindy fascinates me,” says series writer Robbie Thompson, in an interview with Marvel.com. “She gave up 10 years of her life and the world moved on without her. What does that do to a person?”
Now, Cindy is back in New York City, patrolling it’s rooftops as SILK! And she’s going to make up for lost time. Searching for her past, defining her own future, and webbing wrong-doers along the way. Now is your chance to hop on board one of the slickest new launches of 2015 as SILK #1 swings in to comic shops this February!

I think I've mentioned before that I watched a couple of episodes of this show, and didn't find it very compelling. The three main actresses seemed to have been selected for their bust size instead of talent, and they had the same inconsistency problems as superhero magicians: Their powers were limited and/or dictated by the needs of the plot, not any internal consistency that might generate a little suspense.
But I guess someone has been pining for this series, so here it is.

Ten years after its first publication, reprinting Taniguchi's most cherished title. A book in which nothing happens but everything occurs. The Walking Man follows a modern day Japanese business man as he strolls at random through urban Japan - often silent, usually alone - with his vivid dreams that let time stand still. Join him as he climbs a tree in bare feet, takes time out to observe the birds, plays in the puddles after the rain and returns a shell to the sea. Take some stress out of your life and relax with The Walking Man a little step every day.

I read this book in a college course on graphic novels, and rather enjoyed it. But I'll let our resident manga expert describe it instead:
"I read this years ago and took out my copy and re-read it last night," quoth The Baron. "It's pretty much what the copy describes it as being. The protagonist goes for walks, usually alone, but sometimes with his wife and/or his dog. There's nothing resembling a plot, and there's no weirdness. It's just a quiet, relaxing book. If there's any message to it, it's simply "Take time to go for a walk and really look at the things around you." Taniguchi's art is very good -- the book is beautifully drawn. I enjoyed the book -- it's a nice, relaxing thing to look at."

Takes the reader inside Wildcat Academy, a second chance high school in New York City where all the students are considered at-risk. Through strong and revealing black and white images, the book tells the story of eight students who are trying to get that ticket to the middle class - a high school diploma. Whether they succeed or not has as much to do with what happens outside the classroom as in, and the value of perseverance is matched by the power of a second chance. It is a story that shows these teens in all their beauty, intelligence, suffering, humor, and humanity. A view from the trenches of public education, Yo, Miss challenges preconceptions about who these kids are, and what is needed to help them graduate.
