THIS WEEK'S COMICS

Editor's Note: Due to a schedule change at his "main" job, the Captain's Comics Guide commentary is necessarily limited this week. But the list is as comprehensive as ever, and the Captain has bumped up the cover size to see if you Legionnaires prefer it that way. So dive on in, let me know how you like the new cover size and the Captain will have more to say next week.

Meanwhile, here's our boilerplate:

The Comics Guide is assembled using the Diamond Comic Distributors Inc. website, and is subject to change. Clicking on most images results in a larger image. All information is from Diamond and/or publisher solicitations and press releases, except for random comments by Captain Comics (in blue).

VEIL #4 (of 5)

Writer: GREG RUCKA

FC, 32 pages, $3.50

Miniseries

Greg Rucka’s strangest heroine yet!

The truth about Veil leads even more eyes to focus on the strange young woman found wandering out of an empty subway tunnel. Passions run high around her as the body count increases, but is she just an object of desire -- or a force to be reckoned with in her own right?

From Eisner Award winner Greg Rucka!

I'm still baffled how the solicitations keep referring to the girl above as gorgeous, whereas to me her bizarre eyes -- and purple hair -- make her look like an alien from a DC Comics circa 1960.

In Red Sonja #0, Sonja the She-Devil returns from war at sea, only to find that the entire coastline has been living in fear of a beastly marauder named Red Malak ....who claims to be Sonja's HUSBAND!  Don't miss this special Dynamite anniversary comedy of terrors as we ask: who in the Hyborian Age is Red Malak?

"My advice is to only buy Red Sonja if you like high adventure, filthy humor, bloody combat, horrid monsters, fearless heroes, evil villains, saucy fun, thrills, sex and violence," states Red Sonja #0 writer Gail Simone. "We are having the best time ever making this book. It's a labor of love from everyone involved. The stories are sly and fun, the interior art is gorgeous, the covers are magnificent, and oh, yes, we just happen to have the most amazing female barbarian of all time as our lead character. I love Sonja, the whole team loves Sonja, and we love presenting her at her foul-mouthed, ill-tempered best. You should pick up this book or Red Sonja might get peeved at you.  And you don't want THAT."

Dynamite is celebrating its 10th anniversary in style this year by releasing four #0 one-shot special issues having important story tie-ins within each series! To unify the event, each issue features gorgeous covers by Gabriel Hardman!

The Shadow series gets a special one-shot, The Shadow Over Innsmouth, written by Ron Marz (Green Lantern) and artist Matthew Dow Smith. Crafting a Shadow story like no other and placing the pulp avenger in H.P. Lovecraft's famous setting for a truly inspired one-shot, this oversized issue will be available in April from Dynamite Entertainment via both comic stores and digital platforms.

In The Shadow Over Innsmouth, the fog-shrouded town of Innsmouth holds deep secrets. There are legends of inhuman creatures raised from the depths, of supernatural rites and elder gods from beyond. When Lamont Cranston and Margo Lane find themselves trapped in Innsmouth, terrible truths will surface ... truths only The Shadow can know.

"Certainly the title alone made this a natural story to tell, but more than that, both The Shadow and Lovecraft's mythos are products of the same era," says writer Ron Marz. "They both have pulp roots, so despite The Shadow's crime orientation and Lovecraft's overt horror, there's a similarity in mood. I tried to put together The Shadow and the Innsmouth legend in a way that remains true to both of them. And obviously I couldn't ask for a better artist collaborator that my buddy Matthew Dow Smith. If anybody in comics knows shadows, it's Matthew."

This was originally solicited for April 9, but being a one-shot, that doesn't really matter. And the Lovecraft title sorta makes this inevitable, doesn't it?

A beautiful vampire from a strange land who has sworn to save us all from the forces of Chaos.

She has? That's new to me. In the Warren strip she fought forces of Chaos occasionally, but it was sort of random, and forced on her. I confess I haven't kept up with the character at Dynamite.

These poetic and carefully composed fragments are windows into an autonomous world that continues off the edges of the canvas. References to art history, mythology, and pop culture converge without hierarchical order amid the cluttered remainders of manufactured landscapes, or baroque scenes of nature in glorious overgrowth. The people that populate his work embark on secret errands into veils of falling snow and twilight. His works have a restrained and focused tone, inviting contemplation of this intimate space, silent but for murmurs of the ominous.

THE SECOND ARC OF THE SMASH SCI-FI HIT BEGINS HERE

Rick Remender (DEADLY CLASS, Uncanny Avengers, Captain America) and artist Matteo Scalera (DEAD BODY ROAD) dive deeper into the unknown in the hit science fiction adventure series BLACK SCIENCE. The critically-acclaimed new series that follows a team of adventurer fringe scientists on a dimension-hopping journey filled with danger and suspense begins an all-new story arc in issue #7.

In this return issue, the mystery of the onion’s truth is peeled back the deeper the team travels while the mythology of the Eververse unveils new revelations and dangers. The characters are hurled into a seemingly alien world that holds the key to their true purpose. And the line between magic and science is blurred.

"The second arc is another hard turn in the story, with a new status quo established and an all new challenge for the Anarchist League of Scientists,” said Remender. “The fun here is shaking up the character dynamics and forcing people  to put their lives on the line for people they don't necessarily like. We're going to stay on one world this arc, one world that will reveal the deeper meaning of the onion and the Everversal significance of The Pillar. Oh, and chases. And action. And betrayal. And ghost parasites. And telepathic millipedes. And vampire dragons that ride fish-horses.

Now is the perfect time to join the pulp science fiction adventure that pays homage to Heinlein and Asimov and captivates with thrill-inducing artwork that leaps from the page.

Comics’ most beloved homicidal cybernetic kung fu rooster returns for what we humbly anticipate as the most important literary achievement of the 21st Century. All other comics will be made irrelevant. The best thing that's ever happened to comics, and possibly the best thing that's ever happened ... EVER!

Where SECRET AGENT POYO was CHEW through a James Bond lens turned up to 11, WARRIOR CHICKEN POYO is Layman’s and Guillory’s mad take on high fantasy, The Lord of the Rings, Conan and with a dash of The Wizard of Oz thrown in.

"Secret Agent Poyo was the most important comic ever published by Image, in addition to being the best comic book ever published in the entire history of humanity,” declared Layman. “And Warrior Chicken Poyo is SO good, it will make Secret Agent Poyo look like rancid, smelly garbage! THAT'S how good it's going to be! Warrior Chicken Poyo will change comics forever, as well as the life of anybody who reads it."

Guillory spoke of the pressure to outdo such greatness as Secret Agent Poyo. "After drawing Secret Agent Poyo, I flirted with the idea of retiring from comics,” admitted Guillory. “I mean, how could we ever top the magnum opus that was Secret Agent Poyo? But now, with the arrival of Warrior Chicken Poyo, I worry, have we flown too close to the sun? Can comics -- nay, MANKIND -- withstand the terrible beauty of such a book as Warrior Chicken Poyo?!!"

Plus: an all-star pin-up gallery from some of the most staggeringly talented artists in the industry! DO. NOT. MISS.

THE FUTURE OF C.O.W.L. HANGS IN THE BALANCE

“American history gets overhauled in C.O.W.L., a new series about the superhero labor union of 1960s Chicago that’s been described as Mad Men meets Avengers.”  -- The Hollywood Reporter

“This is no rebooted Justice League or X-Men. The characters deal with strikingly real issues.”  -- The Chicago Sun Times

The third issue of Kyle Higgins (Batman, Nightwing), Alec Siegel (Captain America, Avengers), and Rod Reis’ (Justice League) all-new ongoing series C.O.W.L. reveals an unexpected plot twist and things become dire for the threatened superhero union. Likened to popular television shows Mad Men and The Wire, C.O.W.L. explores heroes in a time of tumultuous change, as they struggle to combat corruption, navigate politics, and maintain the public’s faith.

In C.O.W.L. #3 readers will learn more about Radia and her struggle to gain respect in the the organization and the city. Geoffrey discovers that C.O.W.L.’s future is anything but guaranteed and that its survival hangs in the balance. At the same time, John’s investigation into the union takes a much darker turn.

"With 11th hour negotiations failing, C.O.W.L.'s future has never been bleaker …” said Higgins. “Which makes this quite the turning point for the book. This isn't a series about the birth of the first superhero labor union -- it's a series about the death of it."

"With all the plot and betrayal, the tone of the series will get darker and this will definitely be reflected in the art ..." added Reis. "You can expect more red in the future issues!"

"Geoffrey Warner, Radia, and John Pierce make decisions in Issue 3 that are going alter the course of their lives -- as well as C.O.W.L.'s future," hinted Siegel. "To say things are about to get more complicated is an understatement."

I like the art -- it has a kind of retro look that makes me think of the '60s. Or maybe it's the hair.

Jonathan Hickman (THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS, Avengers) and Nick Dragotta’s (HOWTOONS, FF) New York Times bestselling and Eisner-nominated science fiction western series EAST OF WEST begins the countdown toward the Apocalypse in issue #14 as it marches toward chaos and ultimate doom.

Death has left the Horsemen and roams the land searching for something that has been taken from him while his former compatriots plot his downfall. Political stability has given way to outright strife, and war is inevitable as The Endless Nation makes the first cut in the carcass once called America.

"Two issues left in YEAR ONE of the Apocalypse, what Nick and I feel is some of the coolest stuff we've cooked up yet, before we crash headfirst into YEAR TWO. We couldn't be more excited with how we're wrapping up the arc," said Hickman.

And Dragotta simply called it, "Maybe the grossest, most disgusting issue yet."

Readers won’t want to miss out on the incredible suspense and hell-for-leather momentum of EAST OF WEST as the series barrels toward the event of the year and the showdown of a century.

    Art / Cover: GREG TOCCHINI

    36 PAGES / FC / M / $3.99

LOW is set in the distant future, after humanity has relocated to radiation-shielded cities below the sea and the surface of the planet has become a scorched uninhabitable wasteland. A probe has returned with information on a possible alternative planet for humans, but it has landed on the Earth’s surface. A few brave representatives from the warring human clans venture out to retrieve it and the hopeful news it bears.

"Low is a story about one woman's eternal optimist against the crushing weight of a world without hope,” said Remender. “Stel's a perfect character to examine the notion that it’s not what happens in life that defines us, but how we choose to deal with it. Working with longtime collaborator Greg Tocchini is a treat as ever. His rendering of the world of Salus is worth the cost of admission alone, which is already a steal given the first issue is 30 pages of Greg's game-changing work."

Frequent collaborators RICK REMENDER (BLACK SCIENCE, Uncanny Avengers) and GREG TOCCHINI (Last Days of American Crime, Uncanny X-Force) dive into an aquatic sci-fi/fantasy tale following two teams from the last remaining cities undersea as they race to the most unexpected alien world of all -- the surface of Earth.

More than just a science fiction story, LOW touches on the human condition, but in an unconventional way. “Low explores what happens to groups of humans who are holding out hope for a solution when one is quite unlikely. It's an examination of how quickly our ideals shift when we're forced to make pragmatic choices for survival,” explained Remender. “But at its core is an examination of how one person's optimism in the face of all of this hopelessness can potentially change everything for the better.”

The concept for the art on LOW was born out of one image. “When Rick Remender asked me what I wanted to do for our new project, I made a drawing of an astronaut removing her space suit in a curved setting. And that was it,” said Tocchini. “Everything I wanted and the way I imagined it was in that drawing. And that was our first ‘Big Bang’. The look of the whole Low universe came from that drawing.”

“Welcoming Rick back to Image Comics was one of my favorite moments of 2013,” said Eric Stephenson, Publisher at Image Comics. “Black Science was an incredible return, and everyone here is excited for Deady Class, but I think it’s a real testament to Rick’s boundless imagination that he still has more new creator-owned work on the way. What he and Greg have planned for Low is nothing short of phenomenal, and we couldn’t be more proud to help them bring their vision to life here at Image.”

Special introductory issue features 30 full pages of painted art!

But Spidey soon gets caught in the mix and finds himself branded Public Enemy No. 1! With the Kingpin on one side and J. Jonah Jameson on the other, turning up the heat in the Daily Bugle, things go from bad to horrible when the mob gets involved. It’s a Peter Parker pressure cooker!
