BEST BETS

ANGRY BIRDS #1 (IDW Publications, $3.99): One of the most widely played video games gets its own comic book. It's hard to guess how the game could be turned into an ongoing series, but IDW has done more with less.

ARMOR HUNTERS #1 (of 4, Valiant Comics, $3.99): This miniseries is the pillar around which Valiant will build its first, true, line-wide crossover. Powerful, alien hunters arrive on Earth to destroy the sentient X-O Manowar armor worn by Aric of Dacia, which apparently is a thing they do, and they don't mind wiping out the whole planet to be sure of the kill. Since Aric's X-O Manowar armor makes him the most powerful hero on Earth-Valiant, and he's outmatched by the Hunters, what chance does he have even when X-O is joined by the other Valiant heroes? A lot has been building to this, and Valiant has gone all-out on marketing.

BLOOD QUEEN #1 (Dynamite, $3.99): Taking from history the name and reputation (and very little else) of Elizabeth Bathory, writer Troy Brownfield drops her in a fantasy medieval setting of "knights, witches, monsters, warring kingdoms, star-crossed lovers, betrayal and loads of secrets. Or as I like to call it, a good time."

LIQUID CITY VOL. 3 (Image Comics, TPB, $29.99): The third volume in this Image series is like the first two, showcasing comics talent from Southeast Asia around a central theme. This time it's “If you knew the world was ending, what would be the story you would most want to tell?” Like any anthology, readers will find some stories they enjoy, and some they won't. But with 20 stories and illustrations, there should be something for everyone.

MIGHTY AVENGERS #11 (Marvel Comics, $3.99): What if there was an "Avengers" of sorts in the 1950s? What if it was mostly African-American? It may be something of a gimmick, but it's a good gimmick, and Marvel has a strong enough line-up of African-American heroes that it's plausible -- even set in the past.

ORIGINAL SINS #1 (of 5, Marvel Comics, $3.99): While the Original Sin maxiseries and individual titles will show hidden mistakes in the pasts of major Marvel characters, this companion miniseries will show those of less prestigious characters. First up are Lockjaw (of the Inhumans) and Deathlok, with part 1 of a Young Avengers story that will run through all five issues.

RED CITY #1 (Image Comics, $2.99): The writer of this new series describes it as L.A. Confidential on Mars, a blending of crime noir and sci-fi that, if done well, would be pretty cool.

WHISPERS (TPB, Image Comics, $19.99): A supernatural/psychological thriller that follows a young man who can travel in spirit form and urge people to do terrible things. That sounds pretty horrific, and the presence of Joshua Luna (Girls, Ultra, The Sword) is a big plus.

WILDFIRE #1 (Image Comics, $2.99): Matt Hawkins (Think Tank) tells a story about genetically modified food leading to an apocalypse. Hey, maybe this is the diet we've all been looking for!

WOLVERINE #8 (Marvel Comics, $3.99): Evidently the feral X-Men is going to die in three months, if you're to believe the hype surrounding the story "The Death of Wolverine." This is the first issue in the countdown, Wolvie fans!

A new dark fantasy epic begins here! In a fairy tale land of knights and magic, a royal child's life hangs in the balance. Summoned to save the princess, a young woman of untold power begins a journey that will uncover secrets, reveal forbidden desires and stoke the fires of war! The reign in blood is about to be born! Inspired by the nightmares of your youth and the notorious Countess Elizabeth Bathory, THE BLOOD QUEEN comes from writer Troy Brownfield!

Dynamite Entertainment proudly announces the upcoming June release of Blood Queen #1, the first issue of an ongoing dark fantasy comic book series by the creative team of writer Troy Brownfield and artist Fritz Casas. To commemorate the launch, Dynamite has commissioned artists Jay Anacleto, Ale Garza and Sergio Fernandez Davila to provide the series' captivating cover artwork.

"I'm really excited to be working on Blood Queen for Dynamite," says Troy Brownfield, perhaps best known for his fantasy work on Grimm Fairy Tales. "I've always liked books that pull together different genres and manage to work on a few levels, and that's definitely something that we're doing here. We've got the horror element, the fantasy element, and we have medieval drama and all that entails. That means knights, witches, monsters, warring kingdoms, star-crossed lovers, betrayal and loads of secrets. Or, as I like to call it: a great time."

Set against the fairytale backdrop of knights and magic, Blood Queen begins with the heartbreaking plight of a royal child, teetering between life and death. Summoned to save the princess, a young woman of untold power begins a journey that will uncover secrets, reveal forbidden desires and stoke the fires of war. Inspired by the notorious true story of the Countess Elizabeth Bathory, Blood Queen imagines the Renaissance era as a colorful nightmare of mayhem, lust and sorcery.

"In terms of characters, one of the central issues is the idea, ‘How are the evil queens of fairy tales made?'" says Brownfield. "It's less a deconstruction like Wicked and more of a look at what could make a fundamentally good person go bad. Then again, that's not to say that it's always going to be the person that you expect, and it's not going to happen in the ways that you think you'll see coming. We want to deliver twists, turns and shocks. We'll also deal with questions of power: who has it, who earns it, who takes it, and why."

Writer Troy Brownfield has a lengthy history as a comic book writer, journalist and college professor. He began working in comics on the journalism side, founding ShotgunReviews.com and notably contributing to Newsarama, The Pulse, Newtype USA magazine and more. He was Associate Editor for Fangoria Comics and The Scream Factory. In addition to creating the webcomics Sparkshooter (with art by Sarah Vaughn) and Solo Acoustic at Sparkshooter.com, Troy has written for the likes of DC Comics, Dynamite, and Zenescope, where he was the regular writer on Grimm Fairy Tales: Myths & Legends from 2012-2013. Blood Queen is his first ongoing series for Dynamite.

Fritz Casas, the artist of Blood Queen, has contributed extensively to the Dynamite line in recent years, depicting dynamic, gorgeous female characters in such titles as Miss Fury, Red Sonja: Berserker, Kirby: Genesis -- Dragonsbane and Queen Sonja. "Fritz Casas is doing amazing work," says Brownfield. "It looks incredible."

"Troy's writing is fresh and brings a great take on the character." says Dynamite Publisher Nick Barrucci. "Troy's first project for us was a Buck Rogers Annual he wrote years ago, which was nominated for an Eagle Award. I can't say express how pleased I am that we are finally able to work on a new project together. Fans will be amazed by Blood Queen."

Cover artwork for Blood Queen will be provided by Jay Anacleto (Warlord of Mars, Red Sonja) and Ale Garza (Deadpool, Teen Titans), while Sergio Fernandez Davila (Legenderry: A Steampunk Adventure) has created a Retailer Exclusive Variant image that can be tailored to promote individual comic shops.

Rovio Entertainment’s worldwide multimedia sensation Angry Birds™, is the newest property to join the IDW Publishing family! Beginning in June, the playfully fun adventures that took the world by storm will explode onto the page in the boundless world of comics.

The immense success of Angry Birds began in 2009 when the mobile game debuted. With 2 billion downloads through apps, the Angry Birds franchise has now been featured in nine different editions of the game, a number of successful toy lines, an animated series and is in development as a feature length film to be distributed by Sony Pictures. The innovative game solidified a market of casual gamers in the changing landscape of mobile devices.

“We're very happy to be in business with Rovio on Angry Birds comics,” said Chris Ryall, IDW's Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “Rovio has taken what was once a captivating game and built it into an interesting world filled with interesting and, uh, feathered characters who will make a perfect addition to our growing line of fun, all-ages comics.”

The world of Angry Birds has already expanded beyond its initial gameplay, with popular characters such as Red, Chuck, Bomb, Stella, Matilda, King Pig and many other colorful and delightful personalities inhabiting the Piggie Island and forming the basis for an unending series of adventures.

The partnership between IDW and Rovio provides a relationship greater than just a license as Rovio has applied their unique creative vision towards the comic adaptation of Angry Birds. Enlisting top talent from across the comics industry, such as Jeff Parker (Thunderbolts) and Eisner Award-winning writer Paul Tobin (Bandette), Angry Birds captures the fun and originality of the game itself.

“The Angry Birds comics are a perfect way of getting to know the characters, their personalities, and their world more closely. I hope that readers of all ages will have fun with these comics by top-notch creators,” said Jukka Heiskanen, Rovio’s Editor-In-Chief of Comics.

The upcoming comics from IDW will be one way to experience the sensational series in print! Look for more announcements in the coming months, and prepare to bash some green piggies!

    1936337353?profile=RESIZE_180x180Writer/Art/Cover: TOM BELAND

    TPB • B&W • 200 pages • $17.99

Tom Beland, best known for his multiple Eisner-nominated series True Story, Swear to God, brings his unique storytelling to IDW this June in an all-new graphic novel series, Chicacabra.

Chicacabra is a story infused with the humanity for which Tom’s work is so rightly acclaimed, but this time, Tom has written and illustrated an all-new cast of very human characters in a more supernatural setting.

“Tom Beland’s work is the perfect mix of comic-book storytelling with expressive art, interesting characters, and a resonant, emotional core,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer-Editor-in-Chief, “and I couldn’t be happier to see him apply those skills in this new way on Chicacabra. Tom’s books have always been the kind of thing you want to hand someone, whether they’re new to comics or a veteran reader who thinks they’ve seen it all. There’s something for everyone in his work, and never moreso than with Chicacabra, which pushes into the supernatural while still staying a fundamentally grounded, human tale.”

In Chicacabra, you would think being a young woman in high school would come with more than enough drama, but for Isabel Sanchez that is a mere drop in the bucket of her life. On the outside, Isabel looks and acts like your average Puerto Rican girl but after a family tragedy and then a mysterious incident she finds herself with a monster capable of great brutality living inside her. But is it her friend or foe?

Isabel will have to learn to life with a killing machine inside her and navigate high school in this first in a series of planned Chicacabra graphic novels. And heads will roll, to say the least!

"I think people will relate to Isabel. I think we all have a chupacabra in us in some way. There's fear, doubt, many things that you hold deep inside of yourself,” said Tom Beland, “This is about two souls working together in a relationship that could be damaging as well as healing. I love making it. To a degree it was as emotional as making TSSTG."

"It's the greatest comic I've ever read. And I've read the Bible." -- Lily Garcia

I'm not crazy about the art stye, but the story sounds interesting.

COLLECTS GØDLAND #31-36 and the GØDLAND FINALE one-shot

Endowed with supernatural powers after an encounter with celestial beings on the first-ever manned mission to Mars, Adam Archer is the only human being in existence to glimpse universal enlightenment. In GØDLAND, Joe Casey’s and Tom’s Scioli’s trippy, psychedelic spin on the Kirby tradition, Archer has returned to Earth and, along with his four sisters, protects it from threats from the cosmos. The final volume of the series, GØDLAND VOLUME 6: GØØDBYE DIVINE, will answer the question posed from the beginning: Can he truly become one with the Universe?

“From a macro-story/allegorical point of view, Adam Archer is us. His evolution is our evolution, humanity's evolution,” said writer Casey in an interview with Comic Book Resources. “And, yeah, he not an ‘everyman’ ... he's special from the moment you meet him in issue #1 … He's got unique abilities, he's got some psychological damage, he's got loads of personal issues. I think that describes a lot of people, y'know? So, taking that character as a surrogate for all of us, we could show a particular type of human evolution -- an emotional one -- the kind that I can personally relate to.”

Throughout the series, Archer has battled robot zombies, villains in search of the ultimate high, the sadist Discordia, and sibling rivalry. He has encountered a god-like being called Iboga and been guided by a wise dog-like alien named Maxim. But throughout it all, it’s unclear if, as a human, Archer has the potential to achieve what his brush with infinity makes possible.

The job of illustrating such a far-ranging and idiosyncratic work falls into capable hands with Scioli, whose bold character designs, celestial landscapes, and eye-popping color bring the vast universe of the co-creators' shared imagination to life.

    Praise for GØDLAND:

“Joe Casey and Tom Scioli are publishing a tribute to Jack Kirby and Steve Englehart, without mimicking the greatness set forth by those creators. At the same time, this book doesn’t slavishly plod forward solely as tribute, but it offers a story that is odd, fun, and amazing. Scioli’s art is so Kirbyriffic that neophytes to the world of comics might easily mistake this work of some of Kirby’s, albeit less refined than his, and significantly more playful. Like those comics of old … Gødland is pulsating with cosmic energy that strains to pop from the page. -- Chad Nevett, Comics Book Resources

“The concepts and scope of Gødland is big in the way that the universe is big. There are huge alien machines of war the size of mountains putting the island of Manhattan in grave danger. Gods responsible for all life in the universe are behind the scenes of this story, and it’s no mere chemical spill or experiment gone wrong that leads to Adam Archer’s power. There’s a sense of grandiosity to Gødland and it’s almost so unfamiliar to me that I don’t know what I’m looking at. There was a time when this was actually commonplace in comics, but I’m pretty sure that was before I was alive. There’s a little bit of ‘it’s so old it’s new’ going on with this, but it’s doing it in a new way. It’s a big new way.” -- Josh Flanagan, iFanboy

“... this book was a real watershed book for Image and non-Big Two comics in general in that it had an aesthetic and a viewpoint that built on past comics in an additive and not just imitative way. By drawing on Jack Kirby’s cosmic period for inspiration, Casey and Scioli provided the kind of conceptual art that was usually the realm of more indie comics, giving Image comics creators a whole new field to play in.” -- Heidi MacDonald, The Beat

I never sampled this comic, because everything I learned about it -- including the above -- sounded like the creators were having a lot of in-jokey, private fun, and charging readers for it. Anyone a Godland follower and want to set me straight?

Since 2008, the LIQUID CITY comics anthology, edited by Sonny Liew (MALINKY ROBOT) and Joyce Sim, has been showcasing fresh voices from Southeast Asia. The anthology has been well-received by readers and critics alike, picking up an Eisner Award nomination for the second volume in the Best Anthology category in 2011. The third volume of LIQUID CITY continues in this tradition with more than 20 comics stories and several stand-alone illustrations that ponder the question “If you knew the world was ending, what would be the story you would most want to tell?”

LIQUID CITY VOLUME THREE collects the answers from more than 30 artists from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and throughout Southeast Asia. The stories, Liew writes in his preface, “provide a snapshot of the lives of Southeast Asian creators and their ultimate hopes, dreams, and fears at world’s end, capturing that one moment in their lives when they dared to play a game of make-belief.”

The stories explore the theme through the lenses of autobiography and current events, as well as through science fiction and fantasy. The diversity of ethnicity in Indonesia is explored in Tita Larasati’s autobiographical “Bloemen Blij Plukken Wij,” and Elvin Chang, from Singapore, also draws from his own experience in the military in “Boy." In “Pig When Small, Cow When Big,” Vietnamese artist Nguyen Thanh Phong takes a humorous look at a food market with no regulations.

Malaysian artist Aks Kwan’s story “Disappear” has a point of view between magic and reality, telling the story of his and his brother’s glimpse of giant guardian spirits. Singaporean artist Benjamin Chee envisions a different kind of behemoth in “Let Me See the Giant Fall,” a story of humanity’s resistance to tyranny and brutality. Adrian Ngin, an artist from Singapore, has an original take on the standard comics trope of superheroes in “iPocalypse,” asking “What if the retiree uncles and aunties frequenting your neighborhood coffee shops had special powers?”

Brimming with political conspiracy and raging with rival alien mobs, nothing is ever as it seems on the streets of RED CITY. Writer Daniel Corey (MORIARTY) and artist Mark Dos Santos bring you a whole new take on American crime noir.

In the wake of a system-wide civil war, hard-nosed interplanetary investigator Cal Talmage is given a simple mission to find a missing ambassador’s daughter in Mars Central, a.k.a. Red City. The routine case quickly complicates as Cal finds himself in the midst of rival alien mobs, street vendettas and political conspiracies. He struggles with personal demons as he discovers that another war is brewing, and the lives of an entire race hang in the balance.

Coming off a run on the acclaimed series MORIARTY, also published by Image Comics, writer Daniel Corey brings you a new mystery that combines femmes fatale and hard-boiled heroics with classic science fiction. Federal Security Officer Talmage just wants to be left alone, but with a girl in danger, a corrupt mayor in power and the lives of an entire race at stake, he’s got some tough choices ahead, because no one comes out clean in this town.

“You might say RED CITY is like L.A. Confidential on Mars,” said Corey. “Ellroy and Chandler shaking hands with Bradbury. We’ve got a likable-but-troubled cop who tackles a complex case in the midst of a vast criminal conspiracy, and it happens to take place on Mars. The really exciting thing is that we’re building an entire world, and the art of Mark Dos Santos brings a retro-futuristic vibe that will make RED CITY the most dangerous place in the New Solar System.”1936303707?profile=RESIZE_180x1801936355250?profile=RESIZE_180x1801936355478?profile=RESIZE_180x1801936357577?profile=RESIZE_180x1801936359676?profile=RESIZE_180x1801936361775?profile=RESIZE_180x1801936363713?profile=RESIZE_180x180

Two cops. One's a robot. But they don't know which.

Coming from Image Comics this June, BAFTA winner and writer on HBO’s award winning Veep David Quantick teams up with legendary comics artist Shaky Kane (THE BULLETPROOF COFFIN) on the migraine-inducing Pop Art, Cop-Buddy one-shot THAT’S BECAUSE YOU’RE A ROBOT.

Two cops patrol a near-future Los Angeles together in an oversized patrol car, and one of them is a robot -- but we don’t know which! “Welcome to a world where identity is uncertain, the definition of humanity is open to question and there is an evil giant leprechaun who can fly,” said Quantick. “Welcome to That's Because You're a Robot.”

Kane further described the mix of styles in THAT’S BECAUSE YOU’RE A ROBOT. “Imagine Car 54 Where Are You? channeled through Philip K. Dick's cryogenically preserved brain, broadcast via the first Pye color television set with the color turned up to full retina burn,” said Kane. “If you did, you'd get something close to That's Because You're a Robot ... but not that close.”

The 127th issue of the bestselling ongoing series THE WALKING DEAD sold out instantly at the distributor level and will be immediately rushed to a second printing to meet customer demand.

On the heels of Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard’s conclusion to the epic All Out War story arc, this issue marks a new beginning for the hit series and has left longtime fans and new readers alike eager to know what happens next. “This ‘new beginning’ was a big risk for us, and it's extremely gratifying to see how well it's been received,” said Kirkman. “It's good to know that despite so many changes in the book, the devotion of its readers hasn't changed at all.”

Despite being the bestselling franchise in the industry according to Diamond Distributors, a fixture of the New York Times bestseller list for numerous consecutive weeks, and having a hit cable television show on AMC of the same name, the series remains under-ordered within the direct market a stunning 10 years and 127 issues after its debut.

“It’s always frustrating when a bona fide hit like The Walking Dead sells out,” said Eric Stephenson, Publisher at Image Comics. “When we sell out, stores can’t sell the book, and readers can’t get it -- we all suffer. In the time it takes to reprint a book like The Walking Dead #127, we’re all left waiting weeks, and it just winds up being a missed opportunity. That said, we are making it easier for retailers to restock this issue, while also making sure they don’t sell out of the next one quite so quickly."

In WHISPERS, a chilling graphic novel by Joshua Luna (ULTRA, GIRLS, THE SWORD), Sam is a young man struggling with anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder when he suddenly gains the ability to leave his body in “ghost” form and travel, free from his body, unseen.

As he travels, Sam finds he can manipulate people, nudging them to perform acts, as well as hear their thoughts. Unable to control this power, Sam’s actions lead to uncontrollable consequences, and soon he finds himself witnessing horrific acts. Can he right what has gone wrong in his life? Or will he lose himself in a shadow world of demonic forces?

“We are so accustomed to the filter that exists between a person's true thoughts and feelings and what they actually express out loud that we often don't know what it's like to get the raw truth,”  said Luna, who both wrote and drew WHISPERS. “But what if someone could override that filter? What if someone could peek into your mind and know your deepest fears and desires and use that knowledge to influence or even manipulate you? Whispers is about the headspace that we all try to protect from the outside world and how the awareness of its vulnerability can lead to empowerment or destruction."

WHISPERS is an intense supernatural thriller, sure to captivate fans of television shows like the BBC’s and Syfy’s Being Human and dark fiction like Joe Hart’s The Waiting. It will be in comic book stores on June 11 and in bookstores on June 24.

Is genetically modified food an end to world hunger or a first class ticket to the apocalypse?

Coming from Minotaur Press, Top Cow publisher Matt Hawkins (THINK TANK, TALES OF HONOR) teams up with artist Linda Sejic in a haunting story that gives a Sinclair-eque speculation of the future spoils of genetically modified food consumption.

Dan Miller is a plant biologist working with a small team perfecting an accelerated plant growth process. When things start to go wrong, Los Angeles finds itself careening toward unforeseen disaster.

"Wildfire came out of an obsession I had researching genetically modified food," said Hawkins. "When I discovered that both pro and con are shamelessly lying and covering up facts I wanted to do something fun, but rooted in the core science of what they're doing and the debate. EVERYBODY HAS ONE ...

This June, the secrets of the world’s greatest heroes come undone in ALL-NEW INVADERS #6 – an ORIGINAL SIN tie-in! From Eisner-award winning writer James Robinson and guest artist Marc Laming comes the next blockbuster chapter of the series that will have you on the edge of your seat and question everything you thought you knew about the Invaders!

Brothers in arms. Companions in battle. Originally assembled for one purpose – battle back the Axis of Evil and free the world from the grip of tyrants. Though the Invaders ultimately helped win World War II, it came at a heavy cost.

They had orders. They disobeyed. And the cost for their defiance was impossibly high. What secret have the Invaders been keeping? A secret that could have saved countless thousands. Now the secret is out – and Captain America, The Winter Soldier, Namor and the Original Human Torch will face the consequences for their actions.

“This is a haunting story, filled with emotion and tense action, the kind that James does best,” says Editor Mark Paniccia

“Human Torch’s first mission as an official Agent of SHIELD forces him to confront a new superhuman with ties to the INVADERS’s sin,” Paniccia continued. “The mysteries uncovered here are just the beginning. Something’s brewing here that’s way bigger.”

What untold horrors lay the blood soaked past of Namor and Jim Hammond? And how will those sins come to bear in the present day? All will be revealed when the Invaders charge headlong into Original Sin this June in ALL-NEW INVADERS #6!

I guess this will be a DIFFERENT original sin than the one where they wiped out an entire Eurpoean town to prevent the spread of a plague, a story I remember, although I don't remember where I read it. Seems a bit redundant to me. Anybody who's been in combat is bound to have a lot of regrets.

Incidentally, anonymous Marvel person who wrote the copy above, Germany, Japan and Italy were never called the "Axis of Evil." That's a phrase first dropped by Pres. George W. Bush in some speech or other, in reference to Iran, South Korea and Iraq. The trio in WWII were simply "the Axis powers" and it's a name I believe they coined themselves. They did not, by any stretch, call themselves "evil."

What is the Academy Scientifica-Lucidus? Who is Blarion Mercurial? What is the Integrated Mesmonic Spark Convertor?

Journey into the exciting depths of your own imagination in FIGMENT #1, the new Disney Kingdoms series created by the unique collaboration between Marvel and Walt Disney Imagineering. This five-issue series, created by rising star writer Jim Zub (Skullkickers), fan-favorite artist Filipe Andrade (Captain Marvel) and blockbuster cover artist John Tyler Christopher, weaves an all-new steampunk fantasy adventure that reveals the never-before-told origin of the inventor known as Dreamfinder and his trusty dragon companion!

A mainstay of Walt Disney World’s Epcot® Theme Park, Figment and the enigmatic inventor Dreamfinder have captivated visitors of EPCOT’s Journey Into Imagination attraction for years and Marvel and Disney are proud to bring their exciting story to the masses this June!

“Can you imagine the never-before-revealed origin of one of Disney’s most creative characters? Can you picture a Marvel spin on the Epcot® Theme Park’s mind-expanding attraction, Journey Into Imagination? Have you ever wondered how the inventor known as Dreamfinder created a certain inquisitive purple dragon?" says editor Bill Rosemann. "Be prepared for all of these answers--not to mention amazing creatures, magical lands, and cool clockwork contraptions -- in FIGMENT!”

“Expanding the story of Figment has been intimidating, but I’m genuinely enjoying it,” says writer Jim Zub in an interview with Marvel.com. “I want to do right by Disney fans and new readers alike, creating an entertaining story and that comes from working with engaging characters. Digging a bit deeper into Figment and Dreamfinder has been a fun challenge. In so many ways this story really is a ‘Journey Into Imagination’, in both word and deed.”

“After years of requests from Figment fans for new content starring their favorite purple dragon, the Imagineers suggested we expand upon the story told in the Journey Into Imagination attraction,” explained editor Bill Rosemann. “Aiming to surprise them with an adventure they thought they’d never experience, we’re traveling through the mists of time – and from Victorian-era London to the Nightmare nation and revealing how one intrepid inventor became the hero known as Dreamfinder…and also created his famous friend.”

Imagination is inside all of us, waiting to be unlocked. All it takes is one little spark to let yours take flight and make our wildest dreams come true!  This June, let your imagination take flight when one of the most popular Walt Disney World attractions comes to life in the exciting FIGMENT #1!

I still haven't finished the last Waid run on Hulk, and now I'm looking forward to the second!

BTW, even this stodgy old fan fully approves of the retcon tying Bruce Banner and Tony Stark together going back their origins. It helps de-isolate the Hulk, who spent decades wandering the Southwestern deserts with no goal, no motivation and no reason to have adventures that weren't thrust upon him. It got a bit tiresome, at least to me. This connection puts the Hulk back in the center of the Marvel U, as he briefly was in the '60s.

Ask yourself – who are the Original Mighty Avengers? All will be revealed this May in MIGHTY AVENGERS #11 – an Original Sin tie-in!

The ghostly Deathwalkers have risen again, stronger than ever. The only thing stopping them from using their powers to end humanity once and for all? The Mighty Avengers! Only this isn’t the first time a team of Mighty Avengers went toe-to-toe with the Deathwalkers. A team who’s clandestine activities were lost to the annals of history – until today!

“The Deathwalkers plan to end the world is about to come to a terrifying head,” says series writer Al Ewing. “So it’s a good time to ask if they’ve ever tried it before. And it turns out they have – in 1972. Luckily, there were six people around to stop them.”

In 1972, Luke Cage’s father, NYPD Detective James Lucas joined forces with super-scientist Dr. Adam Brashear, master of black magic Kaluu; two-fisted reporter Constance Molina, explosives expert and were-woman The Bear and Blade, vampire slayer, to combat the undead menace of the Deathwalkers. Though they sacrificed everything to save the world, their struggles were kept a close guarded secret.

But no one escapes their past – and secrets never stay truly buried. This issue, Luke Cage confronts his father -- to learn the secrets of the Avengers that time forgot!

As the Original Mighty Avengers race against time to stop the Deathwalkers in 1972, their present day counterparts attempt to uncover the startling secrets they’ve been keeping. Why have their deeds been kept hidden all these years? And what will they do once they’re uncovered? Time is running out for the Mighty Avengers. The secret history of Luke Cage’s father and the Original Mighty Avengers starts in MIGHTY AVENGERS #11!

    EVERYBODY HAS ONE ...

Prepare yourself for more secrets, more reveals and more impact on the Marvel Universe than could be contained in just one series! Spinning directly out of the events of the highly anticipated Original Sin – ORIGINAL SINS, a new 5-issue companion series set to flip the script on some of your favorite Marvel superheroes as the best and brightest creators in the industry explore the deepest darkest skeletons in their closets!

Featuring top-tier creators including James Robinson, Charles Soule, Mark Bagley, Dan Slott, Nathan Edmondson and many, many more – each issue of ORIGINAL SINS contains three all-new stories spotlighting fan-favorite characters throughout the Marvel Universe.

Everyone has a deep, dark secret – from the Avengers to the X-Men to everyone in between. Truth’s hidden for years. The omniscient cosmic being known as The Watcher has borne witness to every event and every secret in the history of the Marvel Universe. But now he’s dead, and the knowledge he’s collected has been released. And those secrets are about to come out.

“Like the ultimate NSA leak, the Watcher – regardless of whether you’re a hero, villain, innocent bystander – the Watcher has seen everything you’ve done,” says Executive Editor Tom Brevoort. “He’s seen it and he knows all, and there’s so much that affect so many players in the Marvel Universe that apart from the spine of the murder mystery proper [in Original Sin] and the impact on the characters that have their own titles, there was still grist to deal with characters of all sorts throughout the Marvel Universe.”

Who is Deathlok? Rising star writer Nathan Edmondson (Black Widow, The Punisher) and fan-favorite artist Mike Perkins expose the secrets of the cyborg super-soldier! But all is not as it seems. And a hidden truth will finally be revealed, setting the stage for Deathlok’s return to the forefront of the Marvel Universe!

Then, Eisner-award winning writer Ryan North (Dinosaur Comics, Adventure Time) and artist Ramon Villalobos (What If: Age of Ultron) follow the Young Avengers in the first of a 5-part serial running through each issue of ORIGINAL SINS. As Hulkling, Marvel Boy and Prodigy attempt to track down the super-powered crime-lord The Hood, even they’re not prepared for what they find. And for one Young Avenger, the death of the Watcher will become a very personal affair!

Finally, writer Stuart Moore joins prolific artist Rick Geary expose the secrets of the faithful Inhuman companion Lockjaw! And you won’t believe what he’s been keeping.

Now, uncover the earth-shattering secrets behind the extended Marvel universe too big and too shocking to be contained in the main Original Sin series!

“No matter who you are, hero or villain or even merely a bystander, the Watcher saw everything that you did -- every dark secret, every embarrassing indiscretion,” says Executive Editor Tom Brevoort. “It’s too late for the MU to erase its browser history -- all of the sordid and scary and sadistic secrets are now being brought into the light of day, and the shockwaves will ripple across the Marvel Universe and its denizens in ORIGINAL SINS.”

Everybody has one. This is Marvel’s ORIGINAL SINS!

    • Logan, Iron Fist, Shang Chi vs. an army of deadly ninja.

    • Three Months to Die -- The title says it all!

Strap in for a gut-wrenching, blood soaked tale of betrayal, vengeance and a hero’s death as 3 MONTHS TO DIE kicks off this June in WOLVERINE #8! All culminating in a grisly September finale that will have the whole world on the edge of their seat!

Friend. Teacher. X-Man. Avenger. Assassin. Hero. The man called Logan has worn many faces and lived many lives. Tortured by the horrors of his past, Logan has spent the better part of his life on a path to redemption.

But all paths eventually end. And there will be no happy ending for the Wolverine. Left without his healing factor, the invulnerable killing machine has found himself mortal for the first time in his long life. And as past sins come back to haunt him – he’ll have to pay the ultimate price.

"If the title sounds ominous, it's for a good reason," says Editor in Chief Axel Alonso. "What will be waiting for readers in September, when '3 Months to Die' is over? Let's just say, it's going to be the buzz of the comics world."

Alienated and alone with no X-Men to protect him, a killable Wolverine prepares to make his final stand. Deadly forces are closing in, and time is almost up. What will become of the Wolverine? And what does the Marvel Universe look like without him in it? Nothing lasts forever, and the beginning of the end starts this June in WOLVERINE #8!

The clock is ticking. Wolverine has 3 MONTHS TO DIE!

It doesn't take much imagination to figure that each subsequent issue will have a cover like Cover B above, with one fewer claw up, right?

The most ambitious crossover event of 2014 begins in ARMOR HUNTERS #1 (of 4) – the FIRST ISSUE of an all-new, four-issue mini-series by New York Times best-selling writer Robert Venditti (X-O Manowar, Green Lantern) and superstar artist Doug Braithwaite (Unity, Justice)!

When Aric of Dacia returned to Earth with the stolen X-O Manowar armor of an alien race, he thought he finally found a weapon to guard the peace and kingdom he’d struggled so long to secure. But now, a relentless and surgical strike team from the farthest reaches of space -- sworn to exterminate the armor and all like it -- have found their final target. The ARMOR HUNTERS are coming. They will hunt. They will trap. They will kill. And they will rid the universe of the X-O Manowar’s incalculable destructive power … even if it means taking the Earth with it.

"The Hunters have been hardened by a long and difficult campaign against the Manowar armors," writer Robert Venditti told USA Today. "They don't come to Earth to make friends or forge alliances. They come to finish the fight."

“2014 will be a year of all-new jumping-on points for Valiant, and ARMOR HUNTERS #1 is the perfect place to start. Robert Venditti and Doug Braithwaite are two of the finest storytellers in the medium. They’ve shaped the Valiant Universe, and we couldn’t be happier to have them architecting ARMOR HUNTERS,” said Valiant Executive Editor Warren Simons.

"X-O Manowar is about to find himself at the center of a firestorm embroiling all of Valiant's most powerful heroes. Believe us when we say that, in an era of events, the scale, scope and intensity of ARMOR HUNTERS will be the biggest and most daring undertaking we’ve ever attempted,” said Valiant CEO & Chief Creative Officer Dinesh Shamdasani.

ARMOR HUNTERS #1 (of 4) kicks off Valiant’s landmark 2014 crossover event in June. Then, ARMOR HUNTERS continues with two brand new story arcs beginning in UNITY #8 by New York Times best-selling writer Matt Kindt (Mind MGMT, Justice League of America) and rising star Diego Bernard (Eternal Warrior); and X-O MANOWAR #26 by Venditti and Eisner Award-winning artist Cary Nord (Conan). And look for even more Valiant heroes to join the fight against Valiant’s first full-scale alien incursion as the summer continues. Further details will follow in 2014.

Next summer, bend the knee … or take the head when Valiant unleashes an all-new starting point for the year's most acclaimed comic book universe, beginning in ARMOR HUNTERS #1 (of 4) by superstar creators Robert Venditti and Doug Braithwaite!

Non-chromium standard editions of all five titles will also be offered for sale.

Contact your local retailer to pre-order your ARMOR HUNTERS Chromium Editions today ... and ensure that you get the full, armor-plated experience of the biggest Valiant event ever!

"Valiant introduced Chromium to comics and we won a slew of innovation awards for Joe Quesada's beautiful Chromium cover to the original X-O Manowar #0. We've received countless requests to bring Chromium back since our return in 2012, but wanted to wait until we had a story that justified its return. Now, with Armor Hunters, we have that story. In the wake of the announcement of Valiant First and Rai #1, the timing couldn't be better to launch our biggest crossover event yet with the armor-plated opening salvo it deserves," said Valiant Publisher Fred Pierce.

"This is bigger and bolder than anything we've done before. With Armor Hunters, Robert Venditti and Doug Braithwaite are laying down what could quite possibly be the most ambitious, most high stakes, most consequence-filled story in Valiant's history. We're going to be equally bold with our marketing and sales, and the first of those initiatives is Chromium. It's a story-centric enhancement that reaches right back to Valiant's roots and we're proud to be able to offer these five Armor Hunters Chromium Editions as on-the-shelf items for excited fans across the world," said Valiant CEO and Chief Creative Officer Dinesh Shamdasani.

Retailers will be eligible to "unlock Chromium" based on their orders of Armor Hunters #1 (of 4), Unity #8, X-O Manowar #26, Armor Hunters: Bloodshot #1 (of 3), and Armor Hunters: Harbinger #1 (of 3). After "unlocking" each separate title, qualifying retailers may order as many Chromium editions of the corresponding title as they like. Retailers be advised: due to the lead time needed to manufacture this special cover process, print runs for all five Armor Hunters Chromium editions have already been set. Supplies are robust but limited, and allocations may occur. If allocations do occur, they will be made based on initial orders.

For some reason, I think the words "All my power ... and I couldn't save them!" should be coming out of X-O's mouth on Cover B.

    A CENTAUR'S LIFE VOL 3 (GN)

    STK637064.jpg?width=150Publisher: SEVEN SEAS ENTERTAINMENT LLC

    Writer/Art/Cover: Kei Murayama

Being a teenager is never easy, especially for a centaur! Himeno is a sweet, shy girl, who like many teens her age, struggles with the trials and tribulations of attending high school. The difference is she's a centaur; but she's not alone. In fact, all of her classmates are supernatural creatures, sporting either horns, wings, tails, halos, or some other unearthly body appendage. Yet despite their fantastical natures, Himeno and her best friends - the dragon-winged Nozomi, and Kyoko with her spiraled horns - are down-to-earth, fun-loving teenagers who grapple with issues of life and love in a mostly normal daily school setting.

    MATURE/$12.99

Every time I see a centaur now I think of a line from Image's Manifest Destiny, where Captain Clark refers to a centaur, in all seriousness, as "a man with a horse's bottom."

I’ve been reading this series – it’s an interesting mixture.  Much of it is standard “Japanese high school hi-jinks" – comparable to something like Azumanga Daioh. But it’s interspersed with some serious world-building. There’s been a chapter discussing how the different races evolved, and looks at how technology would have to be adapted to suit centaurs or people with wings. There also political commentary -- hate-crime laws are even stricter in a world with many distinct races, and so on. It’s not for everyone, but I’m a sucker for stories in which the author has obviously tried to think everything through.

GARTH ENNIS has created a science fiction horror story that grabs you and rips a black hole in your chest while reading.  The crew of the Caliban is dying.  When an alien ship melded with their vessel in hyperspace, it unleashed something long forgotten from the darkest and coldest corners of the universe.  Creeping flesh, mutating fears, and paranoia pushed to the brink of sanity rule now.  Garth Ennis delivers a modern day sci-fi masterpiece in the vein of Alien that tears you screaming from your safe place and leaves you naked before unimaginable horrors.  Available with Regular, Wraparound, Terror and Design Sketch Incentive covers by Facundo Percio and a ultra-limited Dark Matter edition of just 1500 copies.

Korea, 1950. A young mail clerk finds himself trapped on a frozen hill that is defended by US Marines who are surrounded by thousands of North Korean soldiers. Victory is no longer an option. Their only hope is to survive long enough to allow the rest of their division to escape to the sea. A true story of the Korean War told in the heightened tone of Frank Miller's 300.

    $24.99

Oooh! Me wantsa! My only concern is the reference to the "heightened tone of Frank Miller's 300." Because, 300 was a load of hogwash -- it was the recounting of a myth, not history. So I hope they really do mean "tone" and not "content." I really would like to know the unvarnished history of the Chosin Reservoir, a battle I've heard about all my life and know next to nothing about.

    Cover: Gabriel Andrade

Two very different Crossed scribes open new wounds in the miserable world of the Crossed!  Daniel Way introduces a naval captain and his crew as they attempt to survive the plague of insanity spreading across the globe in "Grave New World."  He's a shrewd man and watching the monsters has given him an insightful plan for saving those in his charge.  But whether it is inspiration or insanity, the crew still faces the gleeful misery of the Crossed.  And Simon Spurrier returns to tell a tale set in the infected outback.  Todd drives a road train through the desolate Australian desert. Before C-day he was a loser, an outcast, a fat nobody with a nobody-job. Now he's an Emperor of the wasteland. His rig and its trailers are the safest place around: stocked to the brim with canned food and gasoline. But his desire to have a harem who worship him opens himself up to the true horrors of the outback.  Spurrier brings his trademark flare for developing intricately flawed characters to a story that will haunt your dreams for years to come.   In a world of Crossed...there is no hope and there is no help.  There is only the Crossed.  This volume collects Crossed: Badlands #44 - 49 and the Crossed Special 2013.  Also available in Hardcover.

WHY WE LOVE IT: There's nothing scarier than horror that hits home-a tale of terror only one or two steps removed from our reality. THE EMPTY MAN is a dystopic version of the world we know, where a terrifying disease has taken on almost deific connotations.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT: Cullen Bunn (THE SIXTH GUN, VENOM) and Vanesa R. Del Rey (HIT) are two of the most exciting talents in the industry, and perfectly in sync on this haunting new crime procedural.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT: It's been one year since the first reported case of the Empty Man disease, and no drug has been able to slow its progress. The cause is unknown, and the symptoms include fits of rage, hideous hallucinations, suicidal dementia, followed by death, or a near lifeless, "empty" state of catatonia. As murder cults rise nationwide, the FBI and CDC enter a  joint investigation of the Empty Man, hoping to piece together clues to stop the cult and uncover a cure.

  • GIRLS UND PANZER VOL 1 (GN)

    STK637068.jpg?width=150Publisher: SEVEN SEAS ENTERTAINMENT LLC

    Writer: Girls

    Art/Cover: Ryouichi Saitaniya

Tank girls take the front seat in this new manga series based on the popular military anime. Miho Nishizumi, a new transfer student to Ooarai All-Girls High School, would like nothing more than to enjoy a peaceful, stress-free school life. Unfortunately, her new school just revived its tankery program and enlists Miho to put together a team so that they may compete in a national tournament. As Miho struggles to overcome her turbulent past with tanks, she must first learn to tread lightly with her eccentric companions. Can Miho possibly plow through the challenges and master the art of tankery, or will she get left behind in the dust?

    $12.99

Technically, it should be Madchens und Panzer or Girls and Panzer. (Panzer is the same in English or German, if you're referring to the tank.) And what is it with the tanks, anyway?

The title seems to be a straightforward  transliteration of the Japanese title “Gāruzu ando Pantsā,” which is how the Japanese would say “Girls and Panzer." (It’s been my experience that when the Japanese borrow words from other languages, they don’t worry much about things like precise meaning or grammatical correctness.)

I’ve heard of this. It seems to be set in a universe where a sort of real life version of Tank Command is considered one of the “womanly arts.” My suspicion is that Japan’s militaristic side, officially suppressed since 1945, occasionally manifests itself in odd ways.

This volume covers the final moments of the lead-up to World War Two and the first few years of the Pacific War; it is a chilling reminder of the harshness of life in Japan during this highly militarized epoch. Mizuki writes affectingly about the impact on the Japanese populace of world-changing moments. I'm surprised the blonde lady in the "Wrap" cover doesn't topple over forward. She MUST be an uber-Madchen to lug those things around!

I haven't found a specific image this cover copies, but images and words inside the silhouette of a sexy chick was a fairly common concept in the 1960s and 1970s. Here are some examples:

    STK630042.jpg?width=300Publisher: DRAWN & QUARTERLY

    Writer/Art: Frank King

    Cover: Chris Ware

Walt Before Skeezix collects the first years of Frank King's beloved comic strip, Gasoline Alley. These comics, produced between 1919 and 1920, focus primarily on Walt Wallet and his friends, as they engage with the then-novel automobile sensation that was sweeping the nation. This period of the newspaper strip is especially fascinating as a historical time capsule, charting a moment in America's past when horses and buggies shared the road with cars, and when the USA was making the transition from a country of rural farmers to an urban, industrialized society. Designed and edited by world-renowned cartoonist Chris Ware (Building Stories).

Somebody educate me on whether this is something historically important. My knowledge of the "Gasoline Alley" is near non-existent.

Maybe you can get Jeff of Earth-J to chime in on this one, I’m pretty sure he’s been collecting this strip. I can only say that while I’d be interested to look at these, I don’t quite have 45 bucks worth of interest.
