DARK HORSE

ARCHIE VS. PREDATOR #3 (of 4)

To tell you the truth, I'm a bit put off by the violence and death in this series. It was amazing when Archie and Punisher crossed over, mostly because nobody important in Riverdale got killed, and somehow they made it plausible. And then Afterlife with Archie was amazing, because they took the gloves off and started killing people, and then explored the emotional repercussions. This, though, is somewhere in the middle, with just about everybody dying, but with little emotional impact. The deaths seem, frankly, a little gratuitous.

BLACK CANARY #1

I didn't read the New 52 Birds of Prey, so I don't know how long this version of Black Canary has been around. But if, like me, your last experience with this character was pre-New 52, when she had been Green Arrow's GF for a million years, a long-serving member of the Justice League and a standard-issue superhero, you're in for a surprise. This version of the character is probably early 20s (if that old), has never met Green Arrow or any other Justice Leaguer and isn't a superhero at all. Instead, she's the lead singer of goth/rock band who seems to fight the occasional bad guy if they happen to mess with her or hers in the bar/music/underground scene. I guess the series will follow her transformation into something a bit more admirable, but the opening here is an eye-opener to older fans.

BLACK CANARY AND ZATANNA: BLOODSPELL (TPB)

I posted this when the HC was released, but I'm posting it again here mainly as a warning: I really, really, really looked forward to this book, which is set in the version of the DC Universe when both BC and Zatanna both wore fishnets, but was horribly disappointed. While the story was typically Paul Dini awesome, the Joe Quinones art was only borderline tolerable -- and worse, didn't make use of those darn fishnets at all!

Two of the DC Universe’s brightest stars join forces in this original graphic novel, now in trade paperback!

A year ago, Black Canary infiltrated a gang of female criminals set to pull a dangerous heist at a Las Vegas casino. Its leader was skilled in hand-to-hand combat and had more than a passing interest in black magic. Rather than be captured by Canary or the law, she went to her death, vowing to get revenge on Canary! Now, one year later, death stalks those gang members, and Canary must turn to her friend Zatanna to help investigate.

This title also includes a special sketchbook section.

DOOMED #1

Here's another new DC title in its "DC You" initiative, which the rest of us are calling "Batgirlization." Of all the new titles, this one seemed the most boring and by-the-numbers. Not only has Incredible Hulk beaten the "good guy turns into monster" theme into the ground, but this cover even vaguely resembles Incredible Hulk #1, and is thematically the same.

DR. FATE #1

I've been an enormous Dr. Fate fan ever since my five-year-old eyes first beheld him in 1963, and loved his costume like only a five-year-old can. This isn't the Kent Nelson version, or any other version we've seen before, which is OK, because none of the previous Dr. Fates really were very well-written. (But one was very well-drawn, when Walt Simonson got hold of the character for one issue of First Issue Special, and all of the effects he created there are still in use.) I wish I could say this is the alter ego/back story that pops the character onto the A-list, but I'm not so sure. He's Egyptian-American, which is kinda cool (since Fate's powers are tied to ancient Egypt), and I think he has the same name as the Dr. Fate on Earth-2, which is also kinda cool. But he's a hapless Peter Parker type (despite being in med school) and, honestly, I have read WAY TOO MANY CHARACTERS LIKE THAT. So I hope he moves out of Spider-Man territory and into something unique, and pronto.

HARLEY QUINN AND POWER GIRL #1

This could be cute. In the recent Power Girl guest appearance in Harley Quinn, when Kara had amnesia and Harley convinced her they were crimefighting partners, and then they went into some sort of time/space disturbance, and then re-appeared in the next panel with Power Girl in a wedding dress. Vartox was mentioned (remember him?) and P.G. warned H.Q. to never mention their adventure again (which apparently took some time, even though they returned instantly from our perspective). This mini will show what happened in the year or so that happened between panels in that issue of Harley Quinn. Which could be swell. But even if it flops, we still get a bunch of Amanda Conner covers, and that's good enough!

Hey, remember the panel gutter between panels 3 and 4 of page 20 of HARLEY QUINN #12? What? You DON’T? It’s only, like, the most memorable panel gutter of the twenty-first century. Well, either way, have we got the miniseries for you, in which the full tale of that momentous and momentary pause can be told!

It’s a cosmic adventure beyond your wildest imaginings: Power Girl and Harley Quinn, stranded in a forgotten dimension, on the homeworld of the amorous warlord Vartox! They’ll sacrifice anything they have to in order to get home … except their dignity! Kidding! That’ll be the first thing to go.

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD – FURIOSA #1

From the mind of George Miller, the creator of the Mad Max trilogy, the prelude miniseries to the upcoming film Mad Max: Fury Road continues!

MARTIAN MANHUNTER #1

I wasn't particularly excited by the preview (see below) and despite my lifelong love of the Martian Manhunter, I don't really care for how they're portraying him in The New 52.

PREZ #1

I think it was smart to change Prez's gender in this revival -- it gives her more of an uphill battle against dismissive adult men, so when she triumphs it's even sweeter -- but nothing is going to work unless the tone of this series is attractive/charming enough to leap over the threadbare silliness of the concept. This is one book where execution is really life or death.

And, of course, the cover is an homage to the 1871 painting "Washington Crossing the Delaware."

EMPTY ZONE #1

It must be tough, after the success of Seinfeld, to go through life with the name "Jason Alexander." Anyway, here's another new book from Image.

Story / Art / Cover: JASON SHAWN ALEXANDER

JUNE 17 / 32 PAGES / FC / M / $3.50

"Jason Shawn Alexander has always been one of the most original artists in comics, but with Empty Zone, he shows he's one of our most unique writers, too. What a gorgeous book."

—Brian K. Vaughan

Bestselling artist Jason Shawn Alexander (Abe Sapien: The Drowning, The Escapists) returns to the drawing and writing table with an all-new series sure to disturb readers in EMPTY ZONE: Conversations with the Dead, which will launch from Image Comics on June 17.

In this sci-fi horror saga, Corinne White attempts to reconcile with the ghosts of her violent past, literally, as she trudges through a world of dystopian cityscapes, reanimated corpses & ganglands full of animal human hybrids.

“I created the idea for this series 20 years ago. I'm finally bringing it to fruition, through Image Comics, and I'm putting everything I have into it,” said Alexander. “I wanted to create a sci-fi series that veers off into ghosts and the supernatural and becomes something completely different.”

The Squadron is back! Bigger, better, and more evil than ever! This June, the bad guys come out to play in SQUADRON SINISTER #1 – an all-new Secret Wars series! Writer Marc Guggenheim (Arrow Executive Producer) and artist Carlos Pacheco (Captain America) bring you an epic crime story of superpowered proportions!

Hyperion, Nighthawk, Whizzer, Doctor Spectrum and Warrior Woman. Together they make up the deadliest team of villains Battleworld has ever seen. Lording over their domain of Utopolis, they dispense devastating justice to any and all in their path. But will controlling just Utopolis be enough to feed their lust for power?

But threats from without and threats from within seek to undo everything Hyperion and his gang have built. Rulers from other domains mobilize against these superpowered aggressors. Devastating lies and secrets from within the Squadron itself may tear the team asunder. And seeds sown here bear bitter fruit for the future of the Marvel Universe. The measuring stick for evil just changed – and these five titans are it!

“[Squadron Sinister] is very much in keeping with a crime drama,” says writer Marc Guggenheim in an interview with Marvel.com. “A lot of my touchstones were the Godfather movies and ‘Sons of Anarchy,’ ‘The Sopranos’. You know, that very criminal centric drama that shows that heavy is the head that wears the crown.”

Can anyone stop them? They’ll certainly try! Be there when Battleworld quivers beneath their might in SQUADRON SINISTER #1 – on sale this June!

The chaos of Secret Wars requires a different kind of lawman. Welcome to the force. Whenever there’s trouble on Battleworld, the Thors answer the call. Gods of Thunder from every world, united in their quest to uphold the law. Keeping the peace, closing cases, and dispensing judgment with the crash of thunder and the crack of lightning!

    BETTY & VERONICA #276

This may look like an average issue of B&V, but it's part of the Michael Uslan-written storyline about the girls going on sabbatical around the world while the boys have different adventures at home. This issue the girls are in South Korea, while there's some sort of crisis with French transfer to Riverdale, Violette (whom I assume is gorgeous). That's interesting, but this may also be the last hurrah for Betty & Veronica as drawn in the Dan DeCarlo style, so it could be historic, as well.

Will the girls at Riverdale High make their school more welcoming to these new transfers? And just how well will these new girls fit in with everyone in town? All these questions and more will be answered in this exciting, penultimate chapter of “Farewell, Betty & Veronica”!

  • Actually, no one got killed when Archie met the Punisher.

I've been enjoying Archie vs. Predator.

Rory Williams spent two thousand years dressed as a Roman centurion (Don't ask unless you want to know more Doctor Who continuity than you want to know.), so the Eleventh Doctor dressing as a Roman centurion and boasting about it is a gag on that.

  • I've got a friend who's absolutely crazy for Minions. Just based on the degree of her fandom, I'm guessing there's a lot of it.

  • That Joe Frankenstein tribute cover gives a hat tip to C.C. Beck, but it's actually Bob Oksner who drew the cover it's based on, Limited Collector's Edition C-27.

    1936700530?profile=original

  • I have also really enjoyed Archie Vs. Predator--despite the gratuitous deaths. The way I look at it, I guess, it's just a four-issue miniseries that will never have any consequences beyond those four issues. That definitely seems to be in mind in the writing of this book.

  • I kind of think of it as an action movie the entire gang put together with Mr. Lodge's money.

  • I guess I'm odd man out then, on Archie vs. Predator. That's the way Juggie's head bounces, I guess!

And thanks, Rob, for scratching my mental itch. I KNEW I'd seen that very pose before! I found several that were similar, but not exact.

  • Rob Staeger (Grodd Mod) said:

That Joe Frankenstein tribute cover gives a hat tip to C.C. Beck, but it's actually Bob Oksner who drew the cover it's based on, Limited Collector's Edition C-27.

The Oskner cover was after Beck's cover for Whiz Comics #22, which has the lightning bolt. A couple of other 70s Shazam! covers were modelled after Fawcett ones. The cover of the Shazam! from the Forties to the Seventies collection was after Captain Marvel Adventures #18 (with Mary Marvel's debut story), and Shazam #11 was after Captain Marvel Jr. #26. The contents pages in the giants were modelled after contents pages some Fawcett comics had.

  • The cover of Shazam! #2 was after that of Whiz Comics #112.

The idea of having Superman introduce Captain Marvel on Shazam! #1 was probably inspired by the cover design used on Captain Midnight #1, Don Winslow the Navy #1 and All Hero Comics #1. Also compare Master Comics #50, introducing Radar. (And Mary Marvel #1 and Lance O'Casey #1.)

  • TARZAN: THE ORIGINAL DAILIES

Starting before the Sunday strip Foster and then Maxon drew illustrated adaptations of several of Burroughs's works. These were done picture-book-style; each strip was five or four images, with text telling the story underneath. That's likely why Maxon and Foster were the first artists on the Sundays. (Maxon drew the first six months before Foster took over.) The adaptations can be found online here. I think Burne Hogarth may have consulted the adaptation of Tarzan of the Apes Foster drew when he did his own adaptation of the first half of the novel, published in the 70s.
