BEST BETS

100th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL – FANTASTIC FOUR #1 (Marvel Comics, $3.99): This is the first in a series of comics that will publish one per week in July, looking at the Marvel Universe of 2061 -- 100 years after Fantastic Four #1 launched that universe. It could be fun, especially when they throw around terms like "Dr. Doom's granddaughter" and "the Richards-Banner twins."

THE FOX: FREAK MAGNET (TPB, Archie Comics, $14.99): Archie Comics began as MLJ comics, publishing mostly superheroes. Every once in a while Archie Comics takes a stab at reviving one of their old superheroes, usually without much success. This time, though, they've hired the widely-admired writer Mark Waid to do the honors, and he joins with indie artist Dean Haspiel to combine superheroes, screwball comedy and a touch of the supernatural for a story unlike anything Archie's tried before.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (Marvel Comics): Anticipating the July 1 premiere of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, there's a lot of Guardians product in the pipeline, and this week is especially heavy. Not all of them will be winners, but you can probably count on the baseline quality of Marvel Comics, and the desire of the company to put their best foot forward to take advantage of interest generated by the movie. Two ongoing Guardians spin-offs -- The Legendary Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon, $3.99 each -- launch this week, joined by two one-shots, Guardians of the Galaxy: Galaxy's Most Wanted ($3.99), starring Rocket Raccoon and Groot; and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Prelude ($14.99), which collects some recent online comics and older, published comics that provide extra background for the movie.

ORIGINAL SIN #5 (Marvel Comics, $3.99): Marvel has put a quarantine on information on this issue, aside from the acknowledgement that something pretty big is going to happen and/or be revealed. That's reason enough to take a look!

ROBOCOP 2014 #1 (BOOM!, $3.99): If you enjoyed the recent movie remake, here's a tie-in title for you.

SCUM OF THE EARTH #1 (Action Lab, $3.99): Two Redneck lovers -- who are also sociopathic, trigger-happy killers -- take a desert road trip in this new Action Lab title. If you enjoyed Natural Born Killers or Bonnie and Clyde, this might be for you.

SNOWPIERCER (TPB, Titan Comics, $14.99): Here's the trade paperback version of the hardback Titan released a while ago, but now it's even more pertinent, given the June 27 premiere of the movie in the U.S.

THE STRAIN: THE FALL VOL 2 (Dark Horse, $19.99): The Strain is superstar director Guillermo del Toro's take on vampire mythology, where the bloodsuckers are (really dangerous) victims of a parasitic viral infection. Del Toro wrote a Strain trilogy, which -- under his oversight -- is being adapted to comics by Dark Horse. The story makes the leap to TV on FX July 13, so catching up on the books or comics isn't a bad idea. This TPB collects the second half of the adaptation of the second book. The first half is in Volume 3, of course, while the first book is collected in Vols 1-2. The first issue of the comic book series adapting the third book, The Strain: Darkness Eternal, is currently on the stands.

THANOS (Marvel Comics): There's a couple of collections starring Marvel's Death-loving mad Titan, for no reason I can perceive beyond coincidence. But it's generally good stuff if you like Jim Starlin-style cosmic hoo-ha. Infinity Gauntlet Omnibus is pretty pricey at $125, but it collects more than 1,000 pages of early 1990s comics that have to do with Thanos' quest to track down the six Infinity gems, attach them to the glove of the title, and displace Eternity as our universe's consciousness. Meanwhile, Thanos Rising ($14.99) is a hardback collection of the recent five-issue miniseries detailing Thanos' origin. If it seems familiar, that's because a Thanos Rising TPB has already been released.

TOM CLANCY'S SPLINTER CELL®: ECHOES #1 (of 4, Dynamite, $3.99): Previously only available in Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Blacklist Special Edition, this story bridges the gap between Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Blacklist. Dynamite is presenting the story as a four-issue miniseries, with no doubt a collection planned down the road. If you're a Tom Clancy fan or a fan of the videogame, you'll doubtless want this.

THE X-FILES: CONSPIRACY (HC, IDW Publications, $24.99): IDW pulls off the strangest crossover in comic book history, with the Lone Gunmen of X-Files investigating the Ghostbusters, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Transformers and The Crow. If you're a fan of any of those five franchises, this is probably a must-read, just to see how they do it!

The conclusion to the “Political Science” storyline! Jack McGriskin may be down, but he’s not out. SCUM OF THE EARTH #1 (Bi-Monthly)

Writer: MARK BERTOLINI

Art/Cover: ROB CROONENBORGHS

32 pgs. / Mature Readers / FC $3.99 / $4.99 Variant

Meet Laura and True -- two bourbon-toasted gunslingers caught between hardcore scores and soul-depraved rehab! Dirty, violent and simple, or so it seems. ... The pair's desert road trip of carnage and courtship may just take a cosmic turn when a mysterious figure begins to tail them on their explosive journey. Features a variant cover edition by Allen Byrnes!

Is it possible the only thing that can stop them is something not of this world?

Scum of the Earth is an old-school grindhouse road movie and sci-fi manhunt mash-up that has been described as Natural Born Killers meets The Predator. The twists and turns will keep you guessing until the very end!

Writer Mark Bertolini describes the main characters as “Total scumbags, thrill-killers, out to get their kicks by causing a ton of chaos on the back roads of the South. Like ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ but with less empathy, if that’s even possible.”

“Sometimes you dictate what characters do, and sometimes they make up their own minds.
Laura and True are most definitely in the latter column. And what they do isn’t particularly nice.”

Series artist Rob Croonenborghs says “I’d like to say they’ll get theirs … but that would be telling …”

Take a look into the minds of Mark Bertolini and Rob Croonenborghs as they sat down with Broken Frontier and explain what makes Scum of the Earth tick:

FRANK MILLER: THE ART OF SIN CITY (TPB)

Writer/Art/Cover: FRANK MILLER

On sale June 25

B&W/FC, 128 pages, $25.00

TPB, 9” x 12”

Frank Miller’s Sin City has set the gold standard for crime comics, both for Miller’s unflinching stories and for his visceral, powerfully charged art. To honor the artist and his groundbreaking work, Dark Horse is proud to return Frank Miller: The Art of Sin City to print, now in an affordable softcover edition. An astonishing look into a master’s process, containing pieces both published and unpublished, and featuring items ranging from preliminary sketches to promotional images, this beautiful artistic showcase holds everything a Sin City fan, or connoisseur of fine art, could ever hope for.

• The out-of-print masterpiece, now in softcover!

• Available just in time for the release of Miller and Robert Rodriguez’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For!

• Includes rarely seen art!

• Introduction by art historian R. C. Harvey!

I never thought Frank Miller's art was actually all that good in a technical sense. But it had a lot of dynamism and strong storytelling, like an enthusiastic amateur. The rendering in Sin City added a lot, too. But the bottom line for me is that a "Frank Miller art book" is something of an oxymoron. Divorced from the story, I don't see the appeal. Just MHO.

ABSOLUTE ALL-STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN, THE BOY WONDER (HC)

Art/Cover: JIM LEE and SCOTT WILLIAMS

    256 pg, FC, 8.25” x 12.5”, $99.99 US

The smash-hit Batman epic by modern master Frank Miller (BATMAN: YEAR ONE, THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS) and artists extraordinaire Jim Lee and Scott Williams (BATMAN, SUPERMAN) is now collected in DC’s Absolute format, including issues #1-9! Lee and Miller join forces to tell a new version of Dick Grayson’s origin in a high-octane tale that unfolds with guest appearances by Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Black Canary and more!

Did this ever come to a conclusion? I thought it just sort of got longer and longer between issues and then finally the length of time between issue #9 and Issue #10 became "eternity."

This story was previously scheduled to appear in BATMAN/SUPERMAN #11.

A new arc begins following the events of “FIRST CONTACT.” The worlds of Batman and Superman come to an explosive clash as something terrible happens to the World’s Finest team, and a Dark Knight who is not quite himself must team up with Lois Lane to find a missing Man of Steel. Meanwhile, Selina Kyle encounters a person of amazing strength who has no idea who he is.

This issue is also offered as a combo pack edition with a redemption code for a digital download of this issue.

I'm not really sure what's going on with this title lately. It's had trouble staying on schedule (this book was originally solicited for June 18), and they're swapping stories around? That sounds like "fill-in" to me. Still, ya gotta love those Jae Lee covers!

THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER -- NOW IN PAPERBACK!

“Ferociously intelligent and extremely ambitious … a real treat.” -- Publishers Weekly

“A space opera where high concept arias replace narration and dialogue.”  -- Ain’t It Cool News

Harlan Ellison, science fiction’s brightest luminary, has joined forces with multi-award-winning artist Paul Chadwick, creator of Concrete, and colorist Ken Steacy, to bring you 7 AGAINST CHAOS, a graphic novel that is singular, powerful and unpredictable. This extraordinary odyssey of mystery and adventure will take you to the rim of reality and beyond. In a distant future, Earth is in grave danger: The fabric of reality itself is unraveling, leading to catastrophic natural disasters, displaced souls appearing from bygone eras, and sudden, shocking cases of spontaneous combustion. The only hope for Earth’s survival is a force of seven warriors, each with his or her special abilities. But can these alien Seven Samurai learn to get along in time to find the source of the gathering chaos and save all of reality?

I filed a tepid review of this at some point, but other Legionnaires have expressed enthusiasm. I thought it was somewhat cliched and predictable, but others thought that its reliance on the standard Magnificent Seven set-up was fine because it wasn't the set-up that was important, it was the execution, which they thought was done really well.

I guess what it boils down to is personal taste, like most things.

    Teen +/32 pages/$3.99

Dynamite Entertainment announced it is teaming up with Ubisoft to release Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Echoes, a thrilling comic book series based on the award-winning Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell video game franchise that has sold more than 27 million copies worldwide since its introduction in 2002.

Splinter Cell Echoes takes place between the events of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction® and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Blacklist™. The comic-book series bridges the gap between the two games with a realistic, original story that sets the tone for the opening events in Splinter Cell Blacklist.

Sam Fisher, once a Splinter Cell -- a clandestine elite operative operating in the shadows of the NSA -- is now retired. His enemies, however, are not. Haunted by dreams and memories of his past, he struggles to put his life back together. But when a mysterious terrorist organization called KROWE begins pursuing targets around the globe, Sam's expertise is needed to uncover their endgame and stop them before the deadly plot unfolds.

The project is written by Nathan Edmondson, the critically-acclaimed writer of BLACK WIDOW and THE PUNISHER, who is working with Dynamite for the very first time.  Marc Laming, the artist behind EXILE ON THE PLANET OF THE APES, THE RINSE, THE ACTIVITY and Dynamite's own KINGS WATCH, will be joining him.

"With Ubisoft, Marc Laming and I had the unique opportunity to take on one of the most successful and recognizable franchises in video games," says writer Nathan Edmonson. "I'm telling a full and original story that stands on its own as an action-espionage tale that we're both proud of, bringing a narrative element to the thrill of the game in a way that only a comic can do."

"I've had a great time working with Dynamite on Kings Watch & Flash Gordon so it's really good news that the publisher is going to be the home for Splinter Cell Echoes. It's a rattling good spy-fi yarn full of the sort of story elements that Nathan does best. It's a tale that gives good fan service while equally accessible to folk who don't know the Splinter Cell world -- this is a kick ass, globe-trotting secret operative without restraints," said Marc Laming.

"We are very pleased to be working with Ubisoft on this project, and know that it is just the start of a great relationship between the companies," said CEO/Publisher Nick Barrucci. "This book looks and reads fantastic, and we really thought it deserved getting out to a broad audience via Dynamite. When you read the series, you'll see why Ubisoft entrusted Nathan and Marc to be able to tell a story in continuity with the games, definitely a high honor.  Nathan Edmonson took a video game, and made it one of the best comics today. It doesn't shock me at all that Marvel entrusted him with such important properties with The Punisher and Black Widow. And with those books, he's knocking them out of the park! Combined with the art of the incredibly talented Marc Laming, it's just a perfect fit all around."

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Echoes was previously only available in a limited print run as part of the Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Blacklist Collector's Edition. Dynamite will release the project as a four issue mini-series shipping July to October, with a collection to be published shortly thereafter. The project will feature new covers by Marc Laming and include bonus behind-the-scenes material in each issue from Ubisoft.

I Tom Clancy wonder what Tom Clancy Dynamite thinks is Tom Clancy the selling Tom Clancy point for this Tom Clancy book?

Rediscover the post-apocalyptic world of Tribes when an all-new deluxe edition hardcover packed with artwork and bonus material lands on book shelves everywhere.

Since providing stunning illustrations to the story written by Michael Geszel and Peter Spinetta, artist Inaki Miranda has become a breakout artist at Vertigo, where his work on Coffin Hill has earned him further accolades and recognition. One look at Tribes and it's no mystery why.

Imagined by Geszel and Spinetta, in this sci-fi epic a deadly virus constricts the human lifespan to only 21 years, leaving the world in shambles, and a future where teenage youth lead the last of humanity. Can an old tale lead to a new hope and chance at survival for those that remain?

Capitalizing on the deep mythology of the book and Miranda's artistic talents, Tribes: The Dog Years Special Edition features a "found relic" design that looks as if Sundog of the Sky Shadow tribe fashioned it himself.

This deluxe edition collects the original tale in its entirety plus brand new development pages from Miranda. From extremely detailed penciled pages, to concept designs and pin-ups, the meticulous work of a modern master is on full-display in this hardcover deluxe edition.

“Two years after finishing my work on the book, the world of Tribes still lives in my head. That's how strong this creation is and how powerful the characters are,” said Miranda. Geszel continued, “I'm thrilled with the new edition, especially the chance to show Inaki's stellar pencil work in full pages and publish some marvelous concept designs of new characters.”

Celebrated creator Paul Pope says “Tribes is like Mad Max by way of Disney. Inaki draws with a widescreen vision that jumps off the page."

A VOICE IN THE DARK (TPB)

    386c3a5c-904d-438e-aeaa-024d2e08edd0.jpg?width=150Writer/Art/Cover: LARIME TAYLOR

208 pages, black and white, paperback, $19.99

Collects issues #1-7 of A VOICE IN THE DARK

Every day, college student Zoey wakes up and counts the days — the days that she’s resisted temptation, controlled her darker impulses, and resisted what she fears is her true nature. The days since she killed someone. A VOICE IN THE DARK by Larime Taylor, a new graphic novel from Image Comics and Top Cow’s Minotaur Press imprint, delves into the mind of the killer, one who worries about making a good impression on her roommates and just wants to protect her friends. It will be in stores this summer.

But even as Zoey is engaged in her internal turmoil, something sinister is at work in the small university community — one that Zoey suspects she’s given a voice to in her late-night campus radio show.

A VOICE IN THE DARK is written and drawn by Larime Taylor, a “mouth artist” who was born with arthrogryposis. With use of his limbs severely limited, Taylor draws, shades, and letters his comics using a Wacom Cintiq tablet, holding the stylus in his mouth.

Taylor described his protagonist in an interview with Comic Book Resources. “She's not a psychopath or sociopath, she has friends, and her daily life is complicated by these compulsions she's had since her earliest childhood memories,” he said. “They've always been there. Now that she's actually acted on them, though, she's losing her grip on them. She's daydreaming and fantasizing about killing people in the middle of class, or even a conversation. She snaps out of it and realizes it was just her imagination, but she's not sure how much longer it'll just be her imagination.”

Combining the gripping psychological exploration of Dexter and the dry wit of Heathers, A VOICE IN THE DARK VOLUME 1 is a penetrating look at a young woman fighting to seem like what she so desperately wants to be: normal. But her world just may give Zoey a reason to let her inner demons out. It will be in comic book stores on June 25 and arrive in bookstores on July 8.

Praise for A VOICE IN THE DARK:

“Larime Taylor's A Voice In The Dark is an incredibly smart examination of a dark part of American culture.”-- Justin Giampaoli, Comics Bulletin

A Voice In The Dark delivers a visceral psychological thriller that builds with suspense with each turn of the page. Writer/artist Larime Taylor is bringing things to a slow boil by developing the characters, so that when the blood does finally spill it packs an emotional wallop with readers. A Voice In The Dark has readers fully immersed from the first page to the last as Taylor shows us what it’s like to be trapped inside the mind of a killer.” -- Bloody Disgusting

“[A Voice in the Dark is] another engrossing journey into a burgeoning killer's psyche and if you’re not reading this than you’re missing out. Highly recommended.” -- Harrison Rawdin, Unleash the Fanboy

Is the lead character African-American? I go back on forth on that, perusing these previews every month. It doesn't really matter, I'm just curious.

In fact, I'm getting curious enough about this book in general that I'm tempted to get this trade, even though my Image expenses are currently going through the roof. Anybody reading it? Anybody recommend it?

The newest chapter in Cassie Hack's life will appeal to both long-time HACK/SLASH fans and readers looking for a jumping-on point. “Readers are going to get something that is immediately recognizable as Hack/Slash, yet unique in its own way as well,” said Moreci. “I think Tim told the story he wanted to tell, and that’s why he brought in Steve and I -- we’re preserving what he did while building a whole new thing. There’s a lot of great stories to still tell with Cassie Hack and, hopefully, Son of Samhain is just the beginning.”

"All biases aside, I've been a Hack/Slash fan from the beginning. It's a smart book with equal parts horror, comedy, action, sexiness; you name it. We knew continuing that legacy would be a difficult task, considering its history and loyal fan base, but Mike and I are damn proud of what we are doing with the book,” said Steve Seeley. “It's still a sexy, comedic, action-y, horror comic, except it takes two of us to write it now. Mike's all sexy action. I'm comedic horror. This is our sequel … the next step in the evolution of Cassie Hack."

"We made this to be enjoyed by current Hack/Slash fans but bring in the new as well," said Moreci. "It's sexy, fun, and scary, and Emilio's art is out of this world!"

    1801241562?profile=RESIZE_180x180NAILBITER #2 (2ND PTG)

1fc33008-9909-4062-b95c-f1211966b7b7.jpg?width=150The comics industry continues to sleep with the light on due to Joshua Williamson (GHOSTED) and Mike Henderson's (MASKS AND MOBSTERS) hit horror series, NAILBITER. The second issue sold out instantly at the distributor level and has been rushed to a second printing to meet customer demand. To whet the appetite of fans, who have likened the series’ vibe to that of Twin Peaks and The Silence of the Lambs, Image Comics is pleased to reveal early pages of issue #3 in the series and announce that the letters pages will be aptly named “Nail Clippings.”

"Mike and I are blown away to the response to the first two issues of Nailbiter,” said Williamson. “Retailers are really supporting our horror book and it shows. One of the fun things for Mike and me is that we know what's coming down the line in future issues, and for the people who loved issue one and two ... they haven't seen nothing yet. We won't be satisfied until we have you checking under your bed at night for the Nailbiter."

The mystery and suspense builds in these issues as Detective Nicholas Finch enlists the help of the infamous Nailbiter in order to uncover evidence that might point him toward finding his missing friend. But there are secrets lurking beneath the surface in the town of Buckaroo, and not everyone is who they seem.

    Praise for NAILBITER:

“If Josh died I wish he’d leave Nailbiter to me in his will so I could say it was my idea.” -- Scott Snyder (WYTCHES, Batman, American Vampire)

“Prepare your cuticles for this masterful bit of horror.” -- David Pepose, Newsarama

“In the end, Nailbiter stands on a premise so instantly enticing that you can almost see the movie trailer.”  -- Robert Tutton, PASTE Magazine

“If you're planning on getting a peaceful night's sleep full of happy, prancing sheep, you may want to hold off on reading Nailbiter. The newest title from creators Joshua Williamson and Mike Henderson ... an icky and eerie debut that's sure to turn your sweetest dreams into the stuff of nightmares.” -- Jeff Lake, IGN

“It's a joy to see a dark story make its point without relying on over-the-top or gratuitous scenes. With a big mystery and a killer (or killers) lurking about, you won't know if the main characters will survive for many issues.” -- Tony Guerrero, Comic Vine

Image Comics is pleased to announce that this second issue will be going back to print to meet customer demand. The second printing of NAILBITER #2 will release on 7/2.

Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics is pleased to reveal early artwork for the first issue of the eagerly anticipated TECH JACKET.

“Getting to bring back Tech Jacket to comics with Khary Randolph as an over-the-top, no-budget-constraint, sci-fi blockbuster constantly upping the ante has been been absolutely thrilling to be a part of," said Keatinge. "Khary and colorist Emilio Lopez combine their great skill to create science fiction visuals on a galactic scale, which are set to blow the minds of all who behold them.”

After the out-of-this-world sales of the TECH JACKET DIGITAL miniseries that debuted at Image Expo, Joe Keatinge (SHUTTER, GLORY) and Khary Randolph (Deadpool, Justice League Beyond) announced at Emerald City Comicon that they would team up once again to launch TECH JACKET #1, the first in an all-new print series.

“After the success of the miniseries, Skybound was excited to get more Tech Jacket out there and with Khary on board, I’m on board,” said Keatinge. “Whether or not people read the past series, the DIGITAL miniseries, or none of it, they’re in for what’s going to be the biggest scale science-fiction series I’ve worked on yet. Extremely excited to do so with Khary, Robert Kirkman and company!”

“This project is a dream come true for me,” added Randolph. “Working with Joe, Robert Kirkman, and the rest of the Skybound family has been a blast and I’m sure the fans will see how much fun we are having on this series. If you like action, adventure and excitement then you will love TECH JACKET."

Zack Thompson: community college drop out, lives with his parents. This is who protects us from what lies beyond our world?! I guess it's hard to do a crucifixion scene in comics that doesn't look like every other crucifixion scene in comics, like the one at bottom right. But this Witchblade cover seems an obvious homage to the Uncanny X-Men cover at bottom left, in tone, color scheme and composition. Heck, both even have purple mist rising from purple skulls at the bottom! The main difference is that Witchblade gets a "W" to Wolverine's "X," but otherwise it's a clear swipe homage.

But who cares? What matters is whether or not the book is good, not what gender the protagonist is. And from what I hear -- I'm still awaiting the first Black Widow trade, dang it! -- this book is good.

    The Tomorrow Soldier part 1

The final chapter of the saga that started in Dimension Z begins in The Tomorrow Soldier – an epic new story arc kicking off in CAPTAIN AMERICA #22 by writer Rick Remender and artist Carlos Pacheco! After the Earth-shattering events of last issue, the Super-Soldier Serum within Captain America has been neutralized, reducing him to a feeble old man. After everything he’s already been through, how can Steve Rogers cope with such devastating loss? And can he continue to fulfill his duties as Captain America?

There’s no time for doubt, though, as two of Cap’s greatest foes have emerged from the shadows, their master plan almost complete. The Red Skull and Arnim Zola have reunited to finish the job they started – and not even the Avengers can stop them. The next explosive arc of the series that will have everyone talking begins right here!

Apropos of exactly nothing, it pleases me that Black Widow and Captain America tend to come out on the same week. The characters have been linked in my mind for a while now, with the second Cap movie really cementing the connection.

Meanwhile, while I haven't read the first issue of this storyline yet -- tradewaiting, don'tchaknow -- I'm already bummed that they're going back to the "Cap Loses the Super-Soldier Serum" well. Haven't we read that story enough times already?

Big guns, big pouches and big action all return as your favorite mercenary goes toe-to-toe with that band of militant mutants in DEADPOOL VS. X-FORCE #1 – the first issue in a bombastic new limited series from writer Duane Swierczynski and artist Pepe Larraz! Journey back to the long-forgotten days of the 1990s, when two characters made their thunderous debut and would go on to change the face of Marvel Comics forever.

That’s right – we’re talking about Cable & Deadpool! In this all-new tale, experience the duo’s very first meeting, well before their first comic book appearance together in New Mutants #98, as Cable and his soon to be X-Force race through the timestream to stop a reckless mercenary (that’s Deadpool!) before he destroys American history for good!

“Deadpool's gone back to key points in American military history: the Battle of Germantown during the Revolutionary War; Gettysburg during the Civil War, and then ... well, I can't say anything else, because you know how one little musket ball has a funny of changing the course of human events,” says series writer Duane Swierczynski.

Harkening back to the earliest days of X-Force, this series promises to offer a time-jumping tale featuring that truly resonates the style and tone of the 1990s as Swierczynski is quick to emphasize, “OH THERE WILL BE GUNS, '90s style, although in some cases they'll be fused with some old-school killing machines.”

“Every script I get from Duane is a blast and a half -- and then Pepe gets a hold of it and really kicks it into high gear, says series Editor Jordan D. White. “For fans of the 90s, the American Revolution, and everything in between, this is going to rock.”

Join Cable and his band of mutants as they hunt Deadpool through the annals of American history before he can alter the space-time continuum as we know it! Can they stop him in time? Don’t miss the start of the blast from the past ride that will have everyone on the edge of their seat when DEADPOOL VS. X-FORCE #1 erupts off of the shelves this July!

Man, that Deadpool can't get along with anybody, can he? I bet he runs with scissors, too.

This July, Peter Quill flies solo for the very first time in THE LEGENDARY STAR-LORD #1 – the bombastic new series from fan-favorite writer Sam Humphries and rising star artist Paco Medina!

Spinning directly out of the pages of Guardians of the Galaxy and just in time for the highly anticipated summer blockbuster – the notorious interstellar outlaw is striking out to swindle and swashbuckle his way across the galaxy in search of big adventures and even bigger scores. Expect a battle with the Badoon, a fight to save an orphanage, not to mention a little flirting with Kitty Pryde of the X-Men -- and that’s just the FIRST ISSUE!

One of Wizard’s "Five Writers to Watch in 2011," Humphries’ work on independent and creator-owned comics such as Our Love is Real initially caught Marvel’s attention for his unique style, wit and creativity. Humphries creator-owned work eventually led to his first work at Marvel on the limited series John Carter: The Gods of Mars and later Ultimate Comics: Ultimates.

Reflecting on how he got started at Marvel, Humphries said "In 2011, I self-published a comic called Our Love Is Real which, because of its unconventional subject matter, quickly became infamous. Then-Senior Editor Stephen Wacker brought it to the attention of Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso, who gave me a call pretty much out of the blue. He said, 'Are you ready to get into the mix at Marvel?' I said, 'Before you sign me up, before we get involved -- I just want to make sure -- you have read Our Love Is Real and you know what it is about, right?!' I'm thankful they've trusted me with their books and characters ever since."

He may not have been at Marvel long, but in the span of a few years Humphries has proven himself to be a valuable asset to the Marvel Universe and become a fan-favorite writer. After his time in the Ultimate Universe, which saw Captain America become president of the United States, Humphries made the jump into the Marvel Universe proper during the company’s Marvel NOW! initiative. Under the Marvel NOW! banner, Humphries launched a new volume of the popular Uncanny X-Force series and the fan-favorite sci-fi epic Avengers A.I.

July 2014 sees Humphries lend his pen to the highly anticipated The Legendary Star-Lord #1, a new ongoing series starring the brazen outlaw and leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

"When I first read Sam Humphries' legendarily notorious independent one-shot Our Love Is Real, I knew I was looking at a bold new voice," says Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso.  "And I fully expect that bold new voice to be on full display in the solo ongoing of the cosmos' most irreverent and unlikely super-hero, The Legendary Star-Lord."

When asked what’s most exciting about taking on the new series, Humphries responded “Star-Lord is a space cowboy in the classic Marvel mold -- a swaggering adventurer who strives to do the right thing. I'm excited to write The Legendary Star-Lord because it not only explores the cosmic realm of the Marvel Universe, but also the heart of a heroic scoundrel.

“This book is going to be Peter’s adventures untethered from the Guardians, where he gets to play a little more fast and loose in the cosmic playground. He likes to fight. He likes to flirt. He flies by the seat of his pants. This book is almost more like a Space Western. It’s about heists and cons, bounty hunters, revenge and all that good stuff.”

From the cold abyss of deep space to the seedy alien underworld, deadly forces await around every turn – and the Star-Lord stands alone. As the brazen outlaw prepares to strike out on a new journey, no fan can afford to miss the continuing adventures of the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy. An epic new adventure begins right here -- if he lives that long! Hang on dear reader, as Sam Humphries & Paco Medina take you out of this world when THE LEGENDARY STAR-LORD #1 explodes onto comic shop shelves and digital devices this July!

Marvel appears to have a lot of faith in this character, but he's probably my least favorite Guardian. OK, second-least favorite, after Drax. But still.

    ALL-NEW, IN-CONTINUITY SERIES!

This July, blast off with the smallest Guardian of the Galaxy (packing the biggest gun) in ROCKET RACCOON #1 – written and drawn by Eisner-award winning storyteller Skottie Young! Today, Marvel is proud to present your new look at this highly anticipated ongoing series launching ahead of one of the biggest movies of the Summer!

As defenders of the cosmos go, Rocket Raccoon has faced his fair share of battles. He’s been a hero to the weak, a champion of the good, and a protector the innocent. Not to mention a heartthrob to many intergalactic species across the galaxy. But is he ready to be …a fugitive?!

“I figure that a guy like Rocket, with his attitude, has swindled his way over many planets and charmed many ladies,” says writer/artist Skottie Young. “He’s racked up a militia of ex-girlfriends I’m dubbing the Exterminators. They’re all fed up and they’ve decided it’s time they dish out some payback on his furry little tail.”

Framed for a crime he didn’t commit, Rocket and his pal Groot’s high-flying life of adventure and heroism may be a thing of the past as he’ll soon find himself on the run and on the wrong side of the law. And the authorities aren’t the only one’s hot on his TAIL! (Too easy). An intergalactic boxing match, fierce alien creatures, and  a deadly militia of Rocket’s ex-girlfriends known only as the Exterminators – and that’s just the FIRST ISSUE!

“Despite Rocket’s attitude and antics he has a heart under there, says Skottie Young, in an interview with Marvel.com. “He has some things he may or may not want to need in his life. He’s going to have to examine that. When you’re believed to be the last of your kind left in this galaxy or all the galaxies, that’s something you carry with you. That plays a role in the way you operate. We’ll see him explore that a little bit.”

“But ya know, right after that he’ll probably shoot some stuff,” he continued.

It’s one raccoon (but whatever you do, DO NOT call him a raccoon) against the entire galaxy  this July as superstar creator Skottie Young brings his A-game! And the galaxy won’t even know what hit it! You do not want to miss the highly anticipated ROCKET RACCOON #1 when it blasts its way into comic shops and digital devices this July!

I honestly think humanity could and would survive the slow-moving, dumb-as-rocks zombies of The Walking Dead. But I've never figured out how come vampires -- virtually any variety -- haven't taken over the world by now, and herded us into breeding camps for food. They're smart, they're far more physically powerful and they have power sets we're not only not prepared for, but don't even know about. Plus, you know, they like to kill and eat us, and can do so at will. So in stories like this -- vampires AND zombies? -- I think we'd be so far down the food chain we'd be teetering on extinction. We'd have to be conquered and herded into breeding farms by vampires just to survive as a species!

    *Age of Darkness Tie-in

    $5.99

OK, I know it's "fan service," but can anyone give me an in-story reason why Dorothy dresses the way she does on Cover A? It's an outfit with no protection in combat or from weather, the pants are too tight for easy movement, and the shirt would fly off with any quick moves, and, most of all, no one dresses like that, especially girls from Depression-era Kansas. (Or modern Kansas, I'm guessing.) She'd have to custom make that outfit, and why on earth would she? The Emma Frost Doctrine-- "I dress like this to distract my male opponents" -- is an eye-roller of an argument, but even if you take it at face value it does Dorothy no good, as she seems to mostly fight other scantily-clad women. Any suggestions, Legionnaires?

  • LA PERDIDA (NEW PTG TPB)

    STK643490.jpg?width=150Publisher: PANTHEON BOOKS

    Writer/Art/Cover: Jessica Abel

From the Harvey and Lulu award-winning creator of Artbabe comes this riveting story of a young woman's misadventures in Mexico City. Carla, an American estranged from her Mexican father, heads to Mexico City to "find herself." She crashes with a former fling, Harry, who is good-humored about Carla's reappearance on his doorstep -- until he realizes that Carla, who spends her days soaking in the city and learning Spanish, has no intention of leaving. Jessica Abel's evocative black-and-white drawings and creative mix of English and Spanish bring Mexico City's past and present to life, unfurling Carla's dark history against the legacies of Burroughs and Kahlo.

    $18.00

None of Jessica Abel's bios even hint to her being any kind of relation to Jack Abel, so dismiss that idea from your mind. She began, I think, with a self-published work called ArtBabe, which you may have heard of.

WHY WE LOVE IT: If you're like us, the classic 1987 film holds a special place in your fan heart. Now, we're taking the next step to give fans an original, ongoing RoboCop series set in that very world. This is the hard-bitten world of RoboCop we all grew up on!

WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT: If you've ever wondered what happens to RoboCop and his partner, Anne Lewis, after the first film, wonder no more. Joshua Williamson (GHOSTED, CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT) crafts a story of crime and corruption that fans of Gotham Central, Stray Bullets, and Incognito will enjoy. Carlos Magno (PLANET OF THE APES, DEATHMATCH) brings RoboCop and Old Detroit to life in detail and intensity never seen before.

WHAT'S IT ABOUT: A deadly and charismatic criminal, Killian, is released from jail. He went into the slammer before RoboCop hit the streets. Now he wants to take out the biggest cop in the city. When OCP wants to take guns off the street, Killian sees it as his opportunity to take on the former Alex Murphy!

    Mature/$3.99

I understand why BOOM! added "2014" to the title, to distinguish the title not only from previous BOOM! iterations, but also from the Robocop titles published at IDW. But it's a little awkward, isn't it, given that Robocop takes place in the future, and has nothing to do with 2014 at all?

Snowpiercer is the enthralling and thought-provoking post-apocalyptic graphic novel that inspired the critically acclaimed movie starring Chris Evans (Captain America, Fantastic Four). Originally published in French, this marks the first time that Snowpiercer will be available in English. In a harsh, uncompromisingly cold future where Earth has succumbed to treacherously low temperatures, the last remaining members of humanity travel on a train while the outside world remains encased in ice. The surviving community are not without a social hierarchy; those that travel at the front of the train live in relative luxury whilst those unfortunate enough to be at the rear remain clustered like cattle in claustrophobic darkness. Yet, things are about to change aboard the train as passengers become disgruntled.

    $14.99

I wrote about this GN some time ago, when it was first published in the U.S. At the time the movie adaptation had no firm release date in the U.S -- it's a Korean production and has been released elsewhere -- and it was possible it would never arrive. But now it's out in a limited release, so try to find it in your area.
