BEST BETS

EMILY AND THE STRANGERS: BREAKING THE RECORD #1 (of 3, Dark Horse, $3.99): I understand from various Legionnaires that this is one of those rare books that appeals to tween-age girls (and boys). Here's the first issue of another Emily tale, and more power to it!

FANTASTIC FOUR #6 (Marvel Comics, $3.99): Another Original Sin tie-in, wherein Ben Grimm learns that Johnny Storm accidentally destroyed a cure for his "Thing" condition. Since this is part of an overall storyline called "The Fall of the Fanastic Four" it's a good guess Grimm isn't going to take it well.

FRANK MILLER'S BIG DAMN SIN CITY (HC, Dark Horse, $100): In anticipation of the Sin City movie sequel, A Dame to Kill For, here's a collection of the entire Sin City ouevre. But if a hundred smackers is too pricey, there's ...

SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR (HC, Dark Horse, $25): Here's the single story that is the basis for the movie, for only a quarter of the price of the book above.

ORIGINAL SIN #3.1: HULK VS. IRON MAN #1 ($3.99): Original Sin reveals a deeply buried secret shared by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner that dates back to the fateful gamma bomb explosion that created the Hulk," says Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso -- but he only suggests there's a connection between Stark and the creation of the Hulk. That probably means it's all a misunderstanding, but one that will result in three issues of Hulk and Iron Man slugging it out. Which might be worth it!

ORIGINAL SINS #2 (of 5, Marvel Comics, $3.99): This miniseries reveals "original sins" of some of Marvel's second-tier characters. This issue pulls the curtain back on the Dane Whitman (Black Knight III) and Howard the Duck, and includes Part 2 of a Young Avengers tale that runs through all five issues.

OUTCAST #1 (Image Comics, $2.99): Image is so confident of this new horror series by The Walking Dead writer and co-creator Robert Kirkman that they're offering a double-size, 44-page first issue for only $2.99. Outcast is about demonic possession, not zombies, but Kirkman's got a proven track record, so this could be good.

SAVAGE HULK #1 (Marvel Comics, $3.99): Years ago Marvel published a B&W magazine called Rampaging Hulk, which supposedly told tales from the Hulk's early days that fit between the cancellation of ol' Greenskin's first series in 1963 and his next headline gig, beginning in Tales to Astonish #59 in 1965. However, Marvel eventually chickened out and explained away the whole series as the result of aliens making a Hulk movie. No, seriously. Anyway, this new series also purports to tell Hulk adventures from different periods in his history, beginning with one written and drawn by superstar Alan Davis and co-starring the X-Men from when Charles Xavier was alive. (Well, one of the times Charles Xavier was alive ...!) Let's hope this is the real deal, and Marvel doesn't chicken out again!

SUPERMAN #32 (DC Comics, $3.99): DC's Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns -- who has made a career of revitalizing DC's superhero lineup -- is tackling the Man of Steel with this issue, abetted by artist John Romita Jr, fresh from Marvel Comics. DC is touting the arrival of Romita as a coup, with house ads mirroring those of 34 years ago, when "Kirby is Coming!" house ads announced the defection of the co-creator of Marvel's Fantastic Four, Silver Surfer, Black Panther, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Captain America, Avengers, X-Men, Inhumans, Sgt. Fury, etc. It's too soon to say how good this will be, but with Johns' track record, it's likely to be different.

TARZAN: BURNE HOGARTH'S LORD OF THE JUNGLE (HC, Dark Horse, $49.99): Burne Hogarth's Tarzan work is legendary, and has inspired countless superstar artists, from Joe Kubert to John Buscema. A must-buy for fans of great comics art.

WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE VOLUME THREE collects: Mega Man #27, Sonic the Hedgehog #250-251, and Sonic Universe #54 plus exclusive bonus features you won't find anywhere else!

I was surprised to notice, as I was looking up something else, that Archie's best-sellers are the Sonic and Mega Man lines. That's kind of sad that the Archie books are being eclipsed at the company named for him. But it's also "turn, turn, turn" stuff, in that Archie Comics was originally named something else, and Archie became top dog at that company by replacing something else. Maybe it's just the circle of life.

“Dark Horse has done this one right.” -- Comic Bastards

I'm seroiusly tempted to get the first modern Captain Midnight trade, just because the two Golden Age Captain Midnight collections were so gawdawful. I'm curious to see what they've done to make the character plausible/interesting.

Beginning a new arc!

“Loaded with mystery and drama, set against a fantastically large supernatural backdrop.” -- Comic Vine

“A strong, smart offering from Dark Horse.” -- Comic Book Resources

I don't think it's a coincidence that the first issue of Ghost that's sort-of on time (it's only three weeks late!) is the first issue to feature the art of veteran Jan Duursema. I don't have any inside information, but it appears somebody noticed that this book was essentially bi-monthly, and took steps to correct that.

I honestly hope that one of DH's comics based on videogames takes off -- they need a big, tentpole franchise to take the place of Star Wars, and I don't think their quirky new superhero line is gonna do it.

“It's one of if not the best book I've read this week.” -- Comic Bastards

It doesn't sound like one, but I think this is one of DH's new "superhero" books. I guess it's similar to The Spectre or Shadowman, if you squint just right.

You know one thing that could've done with The New 52? Put a moratorium on any Old 52 villains in every book for a year. Force creators to come up with new scenarios, instead of the 100th Penguin story or the 500th Luthor story. Really challenge the heroes, instead of falling back on familiar tropes.

FEATURING MISS FURY, THE BLACK SPARROW, AND THE SHADOW! The Black Sparrow is a criminal for hire, a beautiful thief and mercenary available for assignments all over the world. When a mysterious organization hires her to pluck the Moon Stone from a New York museum, she reneges on her deal and plans to sell the gem for greater profit elsewhere ... but her employers are not amused. To survive a deadly retribution, she enlists the aid of her former lover -- the macabre crime-fighter known as The Shadow -- and the costumed heroine Miss Fury. Will the two femme fatales uncover the secrets of the Moon Stone?

    • "The story by Victor Gischler is an entertaining, well plotted, briskly paced crime thriller, that just happens to star a couple of pulp heroes." -- Fanboy Nation

    • "Offers a fresh take on rather classic characters." -- Omnicomic

This sort of "imbed" story really irks me. The Shadow's former lover? Puh-leese. We've never heard that before, and after all the Shadow stories of the last 80 years, we should have. Plus, she's a crook -- The Shadow wouldn't sleep with her in the past, because he's not the sort to do his thinking with his Little Shadow. Nor would he team up with her now even if he had, because the sentimental sort he's not.

IOW, they're writing The Shadow completely out of character to give this lame new character a little of his cachet with a team-up. Appalling!

Last time these two teamed up, they made the massive CODE MONKEY SAVE WORLD, a Kickstarter blockbuster that received over $340,000 in donations.

"I'm hugely grateful to all the retailers and readers who have embraced TUROK," says writer Greg Pak. "We've had a tremendous time on the first arc with our brilliant artist Mirko Colak, colorist Lauren Affe, and letterer Marshall Dillon, who brought such visceral realism to the brutal world of 1210 AD in which English crusaders unleashed dinosaurs on Native Americans. For the second arc, Turok's heading West -- where he'll come face to face with an entirely new set of invaders from the other side of the world. The crazy hook? He'll confront the daughter of Genghis Khan, who happens to be the leader of the Mongol Empire's all-female pteranodon-riding sky riders! I'm thrilled to report that Takeshi Miyazawa will be penciling this new arc. Tak and I have collaborated many times over the years -- first on the original Amadeus Cho story for Marvel, and most recently on the CODE MONKEY SAVE WORLD graphic novel based on the songs of Jonathan Coulton. Tak brings an amazing combination of clean, vibrant storytelling, epic imagination, and emotionally compelling, involving character work. He's going to knock this out of the park -- and we're all gonna scream for action figures of his Daughter-of-the-Khan sky rider when this thing is all done."

The devious demon Aku has called together a League of Extraordinary Villains -- composed of malevolent miscreants from different cartoon universes. When their evil robots show up in the world's of The Powerpuff Girls, Ben 10, Samurai Jack, Dexter's Laboratory and (even) Ed, Edd and Eddy, it's up to all these fearless heroes to band together and put an end to the League's nefarious plot of interdimensional conquest!

This June, the heroes of some of Cartoon Network’s most popular shows will join together at IDW for this all-ages, mega-colossal crossover where worlds and characters collide like never before! Written by the legendary Louise Simonson, the six-issue event will feature the herculean heroes going toe-to-toe against the nefarious nemeses Aku, Vilgax, Mandark, Mojo Jojo, attempting to thwart their conniving conquest.

"I love writing group books! So obviously, Super Secret Crisis War! is my dream job!" says series writer, Simonson, "Even researching the series is fun -- who doesn’t love watching cartoons!? Especially excellent, award-winning cartoon series like Samurai Jack, Ben 10, Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Laboratory and Ed, Edd, & Eddy. But the very best part is seeing the art and design so beautifully realized by the wonderful Derek Charm. Fun characters, great artist, and a really fine editorial team at IDW!"

Art and cover duties will be handled The Powerpuff Girls writer and artist Derek Charm. Each issue will also feature a subscription cover by The Powerpuff Girls writer and artist, Troy Little, that combine to form one massive image, so make sure to collect them all. Additional variants by top artists including Katie Cook (My Little Pony) will also be available for this special event.

The beloved Cartoon Network franchises at IDW have brought back the nostalgia for old fans and introduced a whole new audience to the amazing creations by series creators Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack), Craig McCracken (The Powerpuff Girls), and Man of Action (Ben 10).

And starting in July, the madness expands! Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Johnny Bravo, Codename: Kids Next Door and Cow and Chicken will all take center stage as they join the madness of the Super Secret Crisis War in their own one-shots. Written by Ivan Cohen, Kate Leth, Erik Burnham, Scott Peterson & Jim Zub, respectively, each one-shot will tie in to the Super Secret Crisis War showing the full scope of the looming threat.

With all of these classic characters sharing the page, the universe will never be the same!

I've seen so many Crisis/Secret Wars parodies that I can't drum up any interest in any more. Honestly, at this point doing a parody is more cliche than doing one for real.

COWL001_webpr.jpg?width=150Kyle Higgins (Batman, Nightwing), Alec Siegel (Captain America, Avengers), and Rod Reis’ (Justice League) all-new ongoing series C.O.W.L. has garnered early praise across the comics community and sold out instantly at the distributor level. In order to meet customer demand, Image Comics is pleased to announce a second printing of the new superhero comic will be available on 6/25.

Set in 1960s Chicago, C.O.W.L. begins the story of a labor union of superheroes who must work together to regain the confidence of the public and ferret out threats inside and outside their offices.

    Praise for C.O.W.L.:

"Part crime drama, part Chicago history, part superhero epic, Higgins and company have crafted something truly special with C.O.W.L. A refreshingly original debut with scope, mythology and terrific characters." --Scott Snyder, Batman, WYTCHES

“Gorgeous stuff. Keep an eye out for this one.” -- Kelly Sue DeConnick, Ms. Marvel, PRETTY DEADLY

"Rod Reis is doing an amazing modern riff on Sienkiewicz's painted stuff. Really excited to see where he takes it over the next few issues! -- Chris Burnham, Batman Incorporated, OFFICER DOWNE

“A 'why didn't I think of that?' idea. … Compelling/fun/sinister. If Clifford Odets wrote Watchmen, this is what you'd get!” -- Marc Andreyko, Batwoman

Mad Men with capes. C.O.W.L. isn’t just a compelling Superhero comic, it’s an authentic American story. Higgins and Siegel offer up engaging, sometimes hard-boiled characters that Rod Reis paints with aplomb. Definitely a creative team to watch! " -- Brian Buccellato, Detective Comics

“Great period-set superhero noir, with atmospheric Noto/Sienkiewicz hybrid artwork.” -- Declan Shalvey, Moon Knight

"Check out C.O.W.L. #1 by Kyle Higgins, Alec Siegel, & Rod Reis. Cool noir take on what happens to a superhero union when there's no more villains. Dug it." -- Nick Dragotta, EAST OF WEST

“Really great. And pretty as hell, to boot.” -- Bryan Q. Miller, Smallville

“A styling first issue with a ton of brains.” -- Joshua Fialkov, The Bunker

Mad Men with superheroes. Highly recommended.” -- Christos Gage, Buffy the Vampire Slayer

C.O.W.L. bucks the origin fetish of the superhero genre by introducing us to its intriguing cast not at the start of their sagas, but at what might be the end.” -- Comics Alliance

“American history gets overhauled in C.O.W.L., a new series about the superhero labor union of 1960s Chicago that’s been described as Mad Men meets Avengers.” -- The Hollywood Reporter

“This is no rebooted Justice League or X-Men. The characters deal with strikingly real issues.” -- The Chicago Sun Times

“Exploring Chicago’s tumultuous history under the guise of superheroics is a stroke of genius… The book is an easy sell even without the excellent art by Rod Reis. … His work is reminiscent of Kent Williams or Phil Noto, and he gives the book a Mad Men-like authenticity. Recommended.” -- CBS Man Cave

“This  instantly absorbing book is the type of book you hand to someone that ‘isn’t into comics,’ or ‘doesn’t read super heroes.’ …These three are a team who knows how to bring out the best in each other. And C.O.W.L. is the best and will only get better. This is a perfect series to get into. It has a long life ahead of it.” -- Crimespree Magazine

“A genre mash-up and period piece that sounds as fresh and exciting as anything on cable TV, but is also pure comics.” -- Den of Geek (US)

1936355762?profile=RESIZE_180x180Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples’ multiple Eisner and Hugo award-winning New York Times bestseller SAGA returned with the beginning of its fourth arc in this issue.

In this eagerly anticipated new issue the couple embark on new adventures -- but not without adding a few more enemies on their trail.

“One of the greatest things about working with talent as inventive as Brian and Fiona is that Saga is never short on surprises,” said Eric Stephenson, Publisher at Image Comics. “If it’s not the story itself, it’s the velocity this book sells at, and even after establishing itself as a sales juggernaut over the last 18 issues, Saga has once again exceeded our expectations. We went big on the overprint with this issue and still came up short. I’m stunned.”

“Selling out is always kind of bittersweet, especially on a title as popular as Saga,” added Stephenson. “We want this book to be as widely available as possible, for as long as possible, but even with the third volume of the trade paperback outpacing the first two in sales and multiple Eisner nominations for the second year in a row, it’s clear we’re not getting as many copies to our retailer partners as they can sell.

“This book is a living, breathing phenomenon -- its sales trajectory far surpasses that of The Walking Dead at the same point in its publishing history -- and we are constantly looking for new ways to grow what is shaping up to be one of most wonderful and enthusiastic fan communities we’ve ever encountered. Given how much work Brian and Fiona are putting into making this one of the greatest series of all time and how easy it is to sell new readers on this incredible story, there’s really no reason Saga shouldn’t be every retailer’s highest ordered series.”

The breakout series that has captivated critics and fans across the board and garnered much mainstream acclaim from coast to coast continues the story of star-crossed couple Alana and Marko, their young daughter Hazel, and the warring interplanetary forces that threaten their survival.

"Man, this is the best. I can't tell you how much Fiona and I appreciate the support readers and retailers have given our book," said Vaughan. "We'd hoped that taking a short break after each arc to let new readers get caught up on trades before picking up the monthly issues would help us gradually expand our audience, but we never dreamed our scheme would be this successful, so thanks again. Not to be greedy, but Robert Kirkman has vowed that if Saga ever outsells Walking Dead, he'll let me shave his beard and weave the clippings into my own personal hairpiece, so can we please make that happen?"

Staples added: "We're so grateful to all the readers who share Saga with their husbands, wives, friends, roommates, grandparents, and nieces and nephews of appropriate age. It's stunning to see that the word is still spreading. Massive thanks to retailers for getting the book into everyone's hands."

    Praise for SAGA:

“Mischievous, vulgar and gloriously inventive.”  -- TIME Magazine

“May it run for 1,000 issues.” -- Rolling Stone Magazine

“A little bit Romeo & Juliet and a lot Star Wars.” -- USA Today

“Staples and Vaughan, like L. Frank Baum or J.R.R. Tolkien, have brought to life a fantasy world so fully realized that nothing, no matter how incredible, seems out of place for a second.” -- Library Journal

“Vaughan’s whip-snap dialogue is as smart, cutting, and well timed as ever, and his characters are both familiar enough to acclimate easily to and deep enough to stay interested in as their relationships bend, break, and mend.” -- Booklist

    “A beautiful, passionate, adventurous book.” -- Tor.com

1936367025?profile=RESIZE_180x180The second issue of the hit Image Comics southern crime series SOUTHERN BASTARDS, written by Jason Aaron (Scalped, Wolverine & The X-Men, Thor: God of Thunder) and drawn by Jason Latour (Loose Ends, Wolverine & The X-Men, Django Unchained), has sold out instantly at the distributor level.

"The response to this series has been completely overwhelming for all of us involved," said Aaron. "We're thrilled that all our favorite bastards are finding such great homes. And believe me, the bastards are just getting warmed up."

In SOUTHERN BASTARDS #2, it’s Friday night in Craw County, Alabama -- a breeding ground for bastards and the setting for gritty, deep-fried crime -- which means Coach Euless Boss is walking the sidelines like a god. And somebody is fixin’ to die.

    Praise for SOUTHERN BASTARDS:

"Exactly the kind of pulp goodness I live for." -- Ed Brubaker (FATALE, Captain America)

"Can I just take a second to recommend Southern Bastards by the mighty Jason Aaron? Literally the best book I've read this month. Order!" -- Mark Millar (STARLIGHT, JUPITER'S LEGACY, Kick-Ass)

"Southern Bastards by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour made me both terrified and homesick. Fantastic start, boys." -- Matt Fraction (SEX CRIMINALS, Hawkeye)

"Southern Bastards is perfection. There's this great, slow menace to it. Southern Bastards #1 is a perfect comic for you if you like to read ... anything." -- Scott Snyder (WYTCHES, Batman)

"You need Southern Bastards. Jason Aaron is back to southern-fried grit and Jason Latour is showing he’s one of the best cartoonists of our generation." -- Rick Remender (BLACK SCIENCE, Punisher)

“The gushing about Southern Bastards is completely on point. Jason Aaron nails it (as usual), but Jason Latour is the rocketship here.” -- Jonathan Hickman (EAST OF WEST, Avengers)

“This series both pokes fun at and honors their shared roots. Aaron's gritty noir storytelling blends perfectly with Latour's sharp artwork, creating the ideal setting for a mesmerizing, down-home crime story.” -- Comic Book Resources

“A proper Southern Gothic hiding in the skin of a trash genre, Southern Bastards is a must-read.” -- ComicsAlliance

The fall of the first family continues in the explosive FANTASTIC FOUR #6 – a tie-in to Original Sin! From Eisner-award winning writer James Robinson, fan-favorite artist Leonard Kirk and the peerless Dean Haspie.

they’ve been a family ever since that fateful day they ventured into the cosmic unknown, the day the Fantastic Four were born. Bonded together as family, Johnny Storm became the hot-headed Human Torch while Ben Grimm became the hideous monster known only as The Thing. Super-scientist Reed Richards has tried time and again to reverse Grimm’s condition. Each and every time was met with failure. But there was a time when he possessed a device that held the key to permanently curing The Thing – until Johnny inadvertently destroyed it! Reed has kept Johnny’s secret for as long as he could -- but now it’s about to get out!

“Something I always loved about the relationship between Ben and Johnny was how much it was like brothers, bickering, poking fun of each other, pranks … great moments that felt like real family,” said editor Mark Paniccia, “The secret that gets out will have a major effect on the two. It’s brilliant emotional stuff. Hard-hitting and heart-breaking.”

What will Ben do when he discovers that one of his closest friends and steadfast ally condemned him to a life sentence as a monster? It won’t be pretty. The fall of the first family continues as the Original Sin of the Fantastic Four is revealed in FANTASTIC FOUR #6!

I mention this one in the Best Bets, but I'm really not looking forward to it all that much. The story, as described, doesn't ring true with the characters we know.

And, really, this is the worst "Original Sin" they could think of? How about when The Thing was Blackbeard for a little while? Or when Reed shut down Franklin's brain? Or leaving four Skrulls disguised as cows to corrupt the food chain? Or, just a shot here, how about stealing a rocket without proper shielding and irradiating your girlfriend, her little brother and your best friend?

Look, any superhero that's been around for a while has a lot of PUBLISHED skeletons in his or her closet. You don't have to invent any!

Star-Lord on the run from a mysterious new adversary -- alone without the aid of the Guardians!

It's Marvel's stated goal to make the Guardians of the Galaxy a major franchise. And, sure enough, there a number of Guardians-related books in the pipeline currently.

But can they do that -- just make this concept a major franchise just by publishing a lot of books about it? Or are they counting on us to mindlessly buy any Marvel book connected to their larger universe?

Frankly, I don't think fans are that gullible, nor do I think you can create a franchise by main strength. People have to want to buy it, and the spin-off books, not buy them just because that's what's there.

Of course, I've been wrong before.

The Jade Giant was just too big to contain with one series – and this June, he’s smashing his way into another! Today, Marvel is proud to present your first look at SAVAGE HULK #1, the new in-continuity ongoing series featuring the Green Goliath! Legendary storyteller Alan Davis kicks off the new series with an explosive arc full of action and mayhem that only a Hulk series could contain!

The Incredible Hulk has no shortage of enemies. But he’s about to run afoul of some new ones. And it’s … the X-Men?!?! The Jade Giant is about to go toe-to-toe with Marvel’s mutants -- and only one side is walking away! What could possibly drive these heroes to come to blows?

“We wanted big names, superstars and break-out talent to tell their unique stories within continuity,” says Senior Editor Mark Paniccia, in an interview with Marvel.com. “That might be now, or using elements of the past and perhaps even glimpses of the future. It all comes back to the current Hulk mythos while letting the talent cut loose with that Hulk story they’ve been dying to tell.”

Prolific comic book legend Alan Davis kicks off the exciting new series in style as a connection between Charles Xavier and Bruce Banner pits the Incredible Hulk against the Uncanny X-Men! But even as hero fights hero – two of the deadliest Hulk foes in history close in from the shadows. And it’ll take both the Hulk and the X-Men united if they’re to put a stop to the Leader and the Abomination. But can they?

Man, Marvel sure loves the adjective "Savage," doesn't it? Conan the Savage. Ka-Zar the Savage. Savage Hulk. Savage Sword of Conan. Savage Tales. Savage Wolverine. Savage She-Hulk. Savage Sub-Mariner. Have I left any out? If it wasn't for Doc Savage and Savage Dragon, they'd practically have a monopoly on savagery!

Still, I'm a sucker for Alan Davis art -- I'll buy just about anything he draws.

    From BOOM! Entertainment.

WHY WE LOVE IT: Because Natasha Allegri is simply amazing. She built up a big fan-following on Tumblr while working on the Adventure Time cartoon, then created gender-swapped characters (Fionna and Cake) that became so popular they put them into the show. Then, she created Bee and Puppycat and it became the most funded web series project in Kickstarter history. How could we not publish it?

WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT: You might already love it if you're one of the thousands who supported the Kickstarter campaign, but for those of you just joining us, if you like stories that feature magical girls like Sailor Moon, Madoka Magica, and Powerpuff Girls, you will enjoy Bee and Puppycat! It's a slice-of-life story with a twist, and it has so much comedy and enchantment you can't help but be swept up.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT: It's a quirky new take on the magical girl genre with Bee, the forever unemployed main character who can't seem to figure out life, and the mysterious PuppyCat, a stray ... whatever it is ... that she stumbled across who has a powerful secret. Fighting bad guys has never been so funny.

    STK640855.jpg?width=150Writer/Art/Cover: Jim Benton

$13.99, 6"×9", 96 pages, FC, TPB with flaps

New York Times bestselling cartoonist Jim Benton has teamed up with NBM Publishing to bring his popular web cartoons into print for the first time.  Known for creating It's Happy Bunny and Dear Dumb Diary, Benton's web cartoons have become one of Reddit's most popular draws and are known to be whimsical, dry humored and occasionally a bit nasty.People Magazine named him "one of the most visible cartoonists in America." and The Wall Street Journal said "Mr. Benton's intellectual properties. . .have made him stand out in an industry dominated by big entertainment companies."  The winner of three Addy Awards and five top LIMA licensing awards, Benton's creation It's Happy Bunny has generated over 3/4 of a billion dollars at retail.

The recipient of a National Cartoonist Society Reuben divisional award, bringing Benton's more irreverent work to NBM has already proven to be a fantastic match.  According to publisher Terry Nantier, "From our earliest days, we've been committed to bringing the best comics to print, regardless of their origins.  We've reprinted classic strips from the US and have introduced dozens of European comics to American audiences over the past thirty seven years.  Bringing Jim Benton's web comics to print continues that long tradition.  And since this is the first time these cartoons have been available offline, we've worked hard to make this book special presenting it in full color with flaps."

Dog Butts and Love. And Stuff Like That. And Cats. contains wry observations about the absurdities of life and acerbic comments to poetic musings, from cats and dogs to humans, and from one style to another, this compendium will astound readers as it exposes them to the breadth of Benton's seemingly inexhaustible talent for humor.  Nantier added, "This title already has booksellers enthusiastic and they've already made it one of our largest pre-orders in several years.   But more importantly, it's a title that I look forward to audiences discovering and embracing.  It's hard not to pick this book up and smile.  And we can always use more of that."

Dog Butts and Love. And Stuff Like That. And Cats. will arrive via the direct comic market in June and will be available in bookstores and via the general trade in July.

    Praise for Jim Benton:

"Consistently brilliant, always hilarious, Jim Benton is one of the best cartoonists on the web right now." -- Matthew Inman, TheOatmeal.com"

"If laughter is the best medicine, then your insurance company should reimburse you for the cost of this book. " -- Jerry Zucker, Director, Writer, Producer OF Airplane!, The Naked Gun

When you realize that the pathetic cry "I'M BENT" is hidden in Jim Benton's very name on the cover you'll know you're in for a wild ride! And when you read this hilarious book YOU'LL be bent--bent over with laughter!" -- Craig Yoe, Cartoonist, Author, Comic Historian

"Jim's comics are beloved highlights in a sea of billions of posts we see on reddit, and he has consistently managed to stand out, making us (and many others) laugh nearly every day." -- Alex Angel, Community Manager, reddit.com

New York Times Bestselling Author of World War Z and The Zombie Survival Guide, Max Brooks, alongside artist Raulo Caceres (Crossed), create a violently original graphic novel horror series and a new subgenre of fiction: zombies vs. vampires.

Vastly outnumbered by the zombie hordes, vampires descend into all-out subdead war, with humanity caught in the crossfire. This series further examines Brooks’ fascination with the lethal races of the undead and brings his unique voice to comics at a time when horror fiction is at an all-time high in popularity.

He excelled himself with revolutionary page and panel design and dramatic ink line work all in glorious color. Universally regarded as the greatest British comic strip ever produced, the art has never before been reprinted since its initial publication in 1962. Available in a limited edition and a special slipcased edition with 24 additional pages of artwork and text pieces by Dez Skinn and Dave Gibbons.

Gakuen Polizi is the newest manga series by yuri icon Milk Morinaga, author and artist of Girl Friends and Kisses, Sighs, and Cherry Blossom Pink. As a child, Sasami Aoba fantasized about becoming a defender of justice, like the magical girls and "Sentai Rangers" she admired on TV. Years have passed and now Sasami has become a police officer herself. Her first assignment is to infiltrate Hanagaki All-Girls High School and ferret out any trouble she may find. On her first day posing as a student, Sasami is shocked to discover that an apparent book thief at school is actually another undercover police officer, Sakuraba Midori. What's more, Midori insists that she herself is the officer in charge of the school, not Sasami. Will the two girls become rivals, partners or something more?
