ATHENA VOLTAIRE AND THE VOLCANO GODDESS #1 (of 3)

Publisher: ACTION LAB ENTERTAINMENT

Writer: STEVE BRYANT

Art: STEVE BRYANT

Cover A: STEVE BRYANT

Cover B: MICHAEL ALLRED

32 pgs. • T • FC • $3.99 (reg.), $4.99 (var.)

The fan-favorite pulp heroine returns in an all-new miniseries written and drawn by Eisner and Manning Award-nominated creator Steve Bryant. When her father gains possession of a legendary necklace, Athena Voltaire must save him from both strange assassins and the Nazis, who want the power the artifact could unlock! Variant cover by comics legend Michael (MADMAN) Allred!

Globetrotting aviatrix Athena Voltaire takes on Nazis, occult science and mythical creatures against the backdrop of the 1930s. Now she’s bringing her knuckle-dusting style of pulp adventure to Action Lab Entertainment.

“I'm proud to add Athena Voltaire to such a diverse line of quality books,” said writer/artist Steve Bryant, whose all-ages series Ghoul Scouts debuts at Action Lab in June. “I’ve known the Action Lab folks for years, and after working with them on Ghoul Scouts, I knew they were the perfect publisher for Athena Voltaire.”

Athena Voltaire launched as part of the Modern Tales family of webcomics in 2002 and was nominated for a Best Digital Comic Eisner Award in 2005. The feature was included in St. Martin’s The Year’s Best Graphic Novels, Comics and Manga (2004 edition), and has subsequently garnered Manning and Harvey Award nominations, as well.

"I'm ecstatic for Steve to join the Action Lab family, and I can't think of a better home for Athena than Action Lab. We have a proud history of publishing strong female characters, and Athena Voltaire is sure to stand shoulder to shoulder with Princeless, Aero-Girl, Nutmeg and Fight Like a Girl," said ALE President Dave Dwonch.

A re-release of the hardcover Athena Voltaire Compendium will arrive in Decemer. Additional planned releases include a one-shot special and a prose collection.

Sort of an Indiana Jones-Lara Croft-Amelia Earhardt combo? That could be fun, but when working with such familiar tropes it's all going to come down to execution.

 “THE FUTURE OF VALIANT”

Valiant is proud to present BLOODSHOT U.S.A. #2 (of 4) – the next borough-burning chapter of the fall’s blockbuster standalone event from "THE FUTURE OF VALIANT"! On Nov. 23, New York Times best-selling writer Jeff Lemire (BLOODSHOT REBORN, Death of X) and superstar artist Doug Braithwaite (ARMOR HUNTERS, Justice) infect every city dweller from the Bronx to Broadway with the same nanite-enhanced technology that transformed Bloodshot into America’s most dangerous soldier! Now, as the population of New York City turns on itself, Bloodshot must race against the clock to infiltrate the quarantine zone and deactivate the virus before the entire nation starts seeing red!

With the flip of a switch, Project Rising Spirit has just infected every man, woman and child in New York City with a designer “nanite virus,” instantly transforming them into hard-coded killing machines. Now, block by block, the citizens of America’s greatest metropolis are falling prey to their own destructive urges…and Bloodshot is the only soldier tough enough to go head-to-head with the entire Big Apple gone bad! With the humanity of an entire city on the line, Bloodshot is waging a one-man assault on Manhattan to root out the source of this machine-made infection before it hits the heartland … but will bullets and brute force be enough to stop the spread of a pandemic deadlier than anything in human history?

On Nov. 23, superstar creators Jeff Lemire and Doug Braithwaite are going to give the city that never sleeps  a wake-up call as the most hostile comics event of 2016 heads into the heart of the concrete jungle in BLOODSHOT U.S.A. #2 (of 4) – featuring covers from Doug Braithwaite (NINJAK), Stephen Segovia (Action Comics), Dave Johnson (Superman: Red Son), Darick Robertson (HARBINGER RENEGADES), and Clayton Crain (4001 A.D.)!

You know, if all the things that happened in Manhattan in comics happened in real life, nobody would live there.

Cover: STEVE MORRIS

30th Anniversary Variant: KARL MOLINE

Dark Horse is excited to announce the next installment in Joss Whedon’s Buffy comics series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 11. The talented comics duo of Christos Gage (Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 10, Avengers Academy) and Rebekah Isaacs (Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 10, Angel & Faith) returns with more shenanigans from the Scoobies.

After overcoming the struggles of Season 10, Buffy and the Scoobies give themselves a well-deserved break from fighting evil. Unfortunately, the momentary peace comes to a screeching halt when a supernatural disaster wreaks havoc on the citizens of San Francisco, and the gang is forced to save the world from imminent doom, again.

Buffy Season 10 writer Christos Gage described his excitement for the next season of the beloved supernatural thriller: “Buffy fans have been wonderful to Rebekah and me throughout Season 10, so I couldn’t be more excited to keep our creative team together for Season 11! True to form, Joss is not content to just rest on his well-earned laurels, so Season 11 will shake things up with a story that’s shorter, bigger, more epic, and presents what may be the greatest challenge Buffy and the Scoobies have ever faced. We hope the readers will enjoy the ride!”

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 11 will have 12 issues total!

• Rebekah Isaacs and Christos Gage return for Season 11!

• Catch “deleted scenes” on the variant covers from Rebekah Isaacs and Christos Gage!

Even Ulysses couldn’t have predicted this! The penultimate issue of Civil War II will now reach comic shops and digital devices on Nov. 23! Retailers, please take note of the new FOC. Brian Michael Bendis & David Marquez’s epic story is rocketing toward conclusion, and now you can get your hands on it even earlier than expected! Don’t miss CIVIL WAR II #7 – on sale 11/23!

Not over yet. One more month to go.

If you missed my comment in the "Time Runs Out: Questions and Observations" thread, I'll paraphrase it here. And that is this: The Marvel heroes have more or less been fighting each other since the first Civil War, through Axis, Time Runs Out and Secret Wars. IMHO, it was an interesting concept the first time around, but Marvel has gone to this well too many times (or never really left it) and that's why Civil War II isn't selling. We're just tired of watching heroes fight each other.

On Wednesday November 23, Titan are thrilled to unveil Masked #1 -- a new comic series written by author Serge Lehmen (Metropolis) with stunning art by Stéphane Créty (Star Wars), this series is a thrilling sci-fi action thriller of super-powered surveillance.

This first issue features stunning variant covers from the industry's top talent including; John McCrea (Hulk, Spider-Man), Steve Kurth (G.I. Joe) and Benjamin Carre (Smoke City).

Titan PR amuses me with English-isms like referring to Titan Comics as a plural ("Titan are proud to present ...") when in America we refer to publishing companies in the singular ("Marvel Comics is proud to present ..."). They do the same with sports teams ("Birmingham are winning ..."), as opposed to in America, where we think of a team a singular ("St. Louis is winning ...") unless we refer to the mascot ("The Cardinals are winning ..."), which has a plural "s" at the end. But, weirdly, the UK (and Mitt Romney) refers to the field of sports in the singular ("Today in Sport ...") whereas we Americans see a plural word and treat it that way. I have to restrain my copy-editing urge to "fix" their subject/verb agreements, just like I have to fight myself to leave the "u" in "colour," "honour," etc.

OK, that's probably not interesting to anyone who's not a copy editor. We are an odd lot.

Anyway, a superhero comic from Titan is a pretty rare bird. It must have a twist I'm not seeing.

  • The "Maker" version of Reed Richards is currently active in the Marvel Universe.

  • MANDRAKE: I’ve been confused about this volume since its solicitation in Previews. I think you’re right, though: this is dailies volume one.

SCOOBY DOO TEAM-UP: I buy this once in a while, depending on the guest. I may buy this one.

I'm old enough to remember when Alfred Hitchcock said "The Birds is coming." Everyone had a cow, thinking it was bad grammar, which it wasn't, and clever Alfred got a lot of free publicity.

Is a copy editor cool with "amyway"? Sorry, I couldn't help myself. It was just set up too well.

I've tried quite a few iterations of Venom, and never cared for them much including Flash as a military super secret ops guy. Now I did enjoy the Agent of the Cosmos series. Great art with some a fun supporting cast, and an interesting story. So that lasted about a year of course. I have zero interest in this new series.

I preordered the Snyder and Lemire's After Death series, and I can't wait to read your column about it.

  • Cw2 isn't selling?  I figured it was selling enough that they'd use the upcoming Inhumans versus X-men as a springboard to Civil War 3.

  • "Civil War II"? Wake me when it's over.

And you're right,Cap -- at Marvel, it would be a novelty for the good guys to fight the bad guys.

  • Never thought I'd be nostalgic for Captain America fighting Batroc! Zut alors!

I've fixed that typo, Travis. That line was added late in the process, and I posted it without proofreading. Had to fix it -- typos drive me into a murderous rage!
