Comics Guide for Nov. 27, 2013

Ask not what your Comics Guide can do for you, ask what you can do for your Comics Guide! (Which is read it, of course.)

Let's start, as usual, with the books with press releases and previews:

PUBLISHERS PICKS

ALL-NEW X-MEN #19

BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (W)

BRANDON PETERSON (A)

KEVIN NOWLAN (C)

MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. VARIANT ALSO AVAILABLE

32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

The fallout from the events of the critically acclaimed Battle of the Atom crossover have shaken the X-Men to their very core – but there’s no time to rest now! The mutant-hunting Purifiers are back, out to exterminate a mysterious mutant girl! Who is this mystery mutant, and what is her connection to the All-New X-Men? The answer may surprise you!

I can't comment on this specific story, because I trade-wait All-New X-Men and haven't read "Battle of the Atom" yet.

But one big change is obvious: The time-displaced original X-Men are getting new uniforms. And if you think they're kinda boring, I agree. But I have to say, this time the original X-Men got individual costumes for the first time is far better than last time the original X-Men got individual costumes for the first time.

Ow, time travel makes my head hurt.

Anyway, if you're not aware of the choice outfits the X-team adopted when they first abandoned the school uniform in the 1960s, take a gander at these fashion faux pas.

Actually, Cyclops' outfit was simple and strong enough to continue in one form or another for a few decades. But Marvel Girl's miniskirt not only became dated rather quickly, it was somewhat impractical for combat -- not to mention being impractical for for a lot of other things, like sitting down or bending over.

Also, check out The Angel, whose outfit is not only hideous, but he's wearing a belt AND suspenders! Who knew the wealthy and glamorous Warren Worthington III was so insecure about his pants falling down?

Now here are the previews:

AVENGERS ARENA #18

DENNIS HOPELESS (W)

KEV WALKER (A)

COVER BY DAVE JOHNSON

THE SEARING SERIES FINALE!

• Arcade’s mad plan comes to pass! Who lives? Who dies?

• Shock follows shock as the game reaches its last desperate seconds!

• AVENGERS ARENA ends here…but it’s also the launch pad for what comes next!

32 PGS. / Rated T+ …$2.99

Sixteen young, troubled superheroes trapped on an island, forced to fight to the death for the amusement of a madman! Now, as the surviving teens stand battered, bruised, and bleeding, who will remain when the dust clears?! As Arcade’s master plan reaches its climax, it’s still anyone’s game! Who lives? Who dies? What will be left of the survivors when it’s over? And how will the seeds planted here bear bitter fruit in the upcoming Avengers Undercover #1?

As I've mentioned before, I don't care for books where heroes are forced to fight each other like gladiators, because absent mind-control I don't think many would -- or could -- do it.

I certainly wouldn't, because I'd rather die than give the bad guy the pleasure of seeing me kill my friends or of him seeing them kill me. Besides, he's going to kill the winner anyway, right? So why do it? Why give him the satisfaction? I end up dead either way, so why cooperate?

Bleah.

Anyway, you can guess that I've avoided this series, and was mildly relieved when I heard it was going away (albeit a bit saddened for those who enjoyed it). But from this press release, it appears it's not ending, and instead simply morphing into something called Avengers Undercover, about which I know nothing.

Well, at least they won't be fighting each other. Right? Right? Oh, please, tell me they're not going to fight each other any more!

Here are the previews:

AVENGERS ASSEMBLE #21

KELLY SUE DECONNICK (W)

MATTEO BUFFAGNI (A)

Cover by JORGE MOLINA

32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Marvel is pleased to present your first look at Avengers Assemble #21, a tie-in to INHUMANITY! From the blockbuster creative team of Kelly-Sue DeConnick and Matteo Buffagni! After the cataclysmic events of INFINITY, countless new Inhumans are emerging. What if these new super-powered beings fell into the wrong hands? Someone is abducting these powerful weapons before they hatch – and it’s up to Spider-Girl to find out who! And she’s bringing a star-studded cast of Marvel’s Mightiest along for the ride.

“While no stranger to the hero game, Spider-Girl is about to enter a whole new league of super antics, the likes of which include (but are not limited to!) Iron Man, the Hulk, and Spider-Woman,” says Editor Lauren Sankovitch. “When a team of *personalities* like the Avengers take it upon themselves to ‘mentor’ Spider-Girl, what could *possibly* go wrong?”

As her quest for answers takes her right to the seedy underbelly of the Marvel Universe – can she stop an all-out gang war before it happens? Or did this rookie hero bite off more than she can chew this time? Find out this November – as INHUMANITY begins in Avengers Assemble #21!

I'm a little fuzzy on how this eruption of Inhumans is going to be any different than the previous eruptions of mutants. Why would an ordinary human make any distinction? "Oh, you're a weird-looking, super-powered Inhuman? Well, at least you're not a weird-looking, super-powered mutant. We hate those guys." Seriously, isn't there danger that this will just be "Mutant Menace" redux?

Well, maybe they have a plan. I'll cross my fingers and hope it's not deja vu all over again.

Now, the previews:

BLACK SCIENCE #1

Story RICK REMENDER

Art MATTEO SCALERA & DEAN WHITE

Cover A MATTEO SCALERA & DEAN WHITE

Cover B ANDREW ROBINSON

32 PAGES / FC / M / $3.50

Grant McKay, former member of The Anarchistic Order of Scientists, has finally done the impossible: He has deciphered Black Science and punched through the barriers of reality. But what lies beyond the veil is not epiphany, but chaos. Now Grant and his team are lost, living ghosts shipwrecked on an infinite ocean of alien worlds, barreling through the long-forgotten, ancient, and unimaginable dark realms. The only way is forward. The only question is how far are they willing to go, and how much can they endure, to get home again?

Join writer RICK REMENDER and the superstar art team of MATTEO SCALERA & DEAN WHITE for this face-melting science fiction epic spanning the lifetimes of a cast of dimensional castaways lead by the man who caused it all.

Writer Remender says, “Black Science feeds on my love of comic book science fiction, the kind that is incredibly reliant on strong visuals. So fortunately, I'll be working with two of my favorite collaborators—Matteo Scalera and Dean White—to bring these hundreds of new worlds to life. I'm incredibly excited to be doing new books with longtime publisher Image Comics. ... The setup we have here is one that I have absolute faith will lead to years and years of great stories. I've already got the first two years of the series plotted out and I'm absolutely dying to take people on this shotgun blast of a journey.”

“Black Science is best read tucked inside something respectable and boring. Why let the outside world know you're having this much fun?” -- Patton Oswalt

“Seriously excited for Remender and Matteo Scalera's Black Science from Image Comics. Epic, anarchic, sci-fi greatness and the art is gorgeous.” -- Scott Snyder (SEVERED, Batman, The Wake, American Vampire)

"I think it's best described as VIVID. No. VIVIDLY WILD, with drama and humor. The art by Matteo Scalera is stunningly beautifully fluid and imaginative. And the masterful Dean White's color palettes and textures create an atmosphere of a dream-like lush. You must read this!" -- J.H. Williams III (Sandman: Overture, Batwoman)

"Just a big pure vision of science fiction wonderment. Comics to paint the inside of your eyelids with." -- Kieron Gillen (THREE, PHONOGRAM, Young Avengers)

There's no review copy of this available yet, so I don't know any more than you do. But even though I'm not a big fan of Remender's writing, this sounds like it plays to his strengths, and is interesting on the face of it. I plan to sample, at the very least.

Meanwhile, here's some more stuff to help you with your decision. For example, in addition to scads of press releases (merged above), Image sent out a bunch of ... house ads, I guess you'd call 'em. Anyway, here they are:

And here are some previews:

SEX, VOL 1: THE SUMMER OF HARD TP

Story JOE CASEY

Art PIOTR KOWALSKI

168 PAGES / FC / M / $9.99

Suggested for Mature Readers

DO YOU WANNA BUY TEN BUCKS WORTH OF SEX?

SPECIAL LOW INTRODUCTORY PRICE!

Collects SEX #1-8

Man of Action Studios' Joe Casey and artist Piotr Kowalski are the creators of the best-selling monthly series, which features retired superhero Simon Cooke and his pained attempts to re-acclimate to a normal, civilian lifestyle that he was never that good at to begin with. Of course, in Saturn City, nothing is "normal" and each month SEX delves into its psycho-erotic, urban underbelly — chock-full of former enemies and former allies — with unflinching abandon.

In reviewing the series, Comic Book Resources declared, "Joe Casey and Piotr Kowalski have created a stylish look at an often overlooked part of the superhero genre."

And from IGN.com: "This comic is a really great read, like the kind of stuff we used to get from Preacher, Y: The Last Man, and Transmetropolitian."

Regarding the first trade paperback, Casey said, "It's great to be able to offer this much content for just under ten bucks. This way, we can get even more people paying for even more SEX — and at an affordable price, too! Still not for the kids, though... but everyone of age who's tried SEX so far seems to like it. I know I do."

I've read only a couple of issues of this (#4-5, I think), so I'm hardly an expert. But I should say on the front end that, while sex does happen in this book, it's not the primary activity, so don't let the title fool you. This isn't porn of any kind.

But sex does happen, and in the two cases I saw (both oral sex acts), there were no convenient shadows or sheets in the way or hair falling just so. Oral-genital contact was in full view, although not played up in an overly salacious way. It just WAS, you know? Anyway, as you'd guess, Sex isn't for the kiddies.

So what is Sex about? Again, I'm no expert, but it seems to be the journey of the lead character -- a retired and extremely repressed superhero -- in his effort to have a life, which is tied up with his journey to allow himself to have sex . (I'm guessing he's still a virgin -- if that has been established, it happened in an issue I haven't read, but it's a pretty good guess.) Anyway, he's mourning some crimefighting partner of his, a female named Quinn, who is apparently dead (I missed the first few issues), so maybe he was having sex with her, I dunno. But he's also mooning over a Catwoman type named the Night Lynx, who is also apparently retired, and running a whorehouse. Well, I think it's a whorehouse; it might just be a strip club. Or both, maybe.

As you can see, there's a lot I don't know about Sex. (Ha.) But what I glean from what I've read is that this is a story that is taking its sweet time -- the pacing is glacial. So TPB is probably the way to go over a monthly purchase. I do plan to read this first TPB myself, and evaluate if I like these characters enough to continue.

Because I think that's crucial: My guess is that if you like the ensemble Casey has assembled, you will want to read the book, and if you find them and their problems boring, you'll move on.

Anyone else reading this regularly, and want to chime in?

One-shot

Meet the Victories—six heroes sworn to protect us from crime, corruption, and the dark. When the team member Faustus uncovers his traumatic hidden past, will he self-destruct?

The Victories #1—back in print for $1!

“The highest compliment I can pay to any form of storytelling is this: I have no idea what’s going to happen next and I can’t wait to find out.”–Bloody Disgusting

“Fiumara’s…monsters are top notch.” Comic Book Resources

One full issue! One dollar!

I should take my own advice on this one, and I will if the LCS doesn't run out of them before I get there.

Oeming's career got launched for his work on Powers, which I bought religiously in its first incarnation. But the thing is, I didn't buy Powers for Oeming's art, which I found appropriate for the subject matter but not especially my cup of tea. I have found that I don't particularly appreciate his work outside of Powers.

And this isn't even his art, it's writing! But, hey, I'm always willing to try something new, so I'll give this a try. Any recommendations either way, Legionnaires?

In 1974, Marvel publisher Stan Lee and underground pioneer Denis Kitchen collaborated on a series: Comix Book. Featuring underground comix by Joel Beck, Kim Deitch, Justin Green, Trina Robbins, Art Spiegelman (first national appearance of Maus), Skip Williamson, and S. Clay Wilson, this best-of collects them all! Introduction by Stan Lee.

• Hardcover collection reprinting the best of the 1970s series Comix Book!

• Introduction by the legendary Stan Lee and foreword by underground pioneer Denis Kitchen!

I bought a few issues of Comix Book in the '70s, but they didn't do much for me. I mean, the underground comics weren't really all that great -- outside of R. Crumb, Spain Rodriguez, The Fabulous Furry Freak Bros. and a couple of other highlights, the art wasn't usually very good and the stories were often nonsensical, stream of (stoned) consciousness.

What made underground comix so great was their utter lawlessness. What gave them panache is that they were unapologetically outside the realm of acceptable material, gleefully without social or artistic value, stuff that thumbed its nose at The Man, comics that broke every taboo just to break them. For that alone, I loved them.

So giving them a mainstream platform robbed them, for me, of their outlaw image and value. Acceptable underground comix aren't underground comix at all!

MISTER X: EVICTION & OTHER STORIES TP

From visionary artist and designer Dean Motter!

Dean Motter (W/A/Cover) and Hamid Bahrami (A/C)

FC, 120 pages, $15.99

TP, 6” x 9”

The psychetecture upon which Radiant City was built is driving its residents insane, and only Mister X can help! If that wasn’t enough, a government coup has thrust Radiant City into turmoil, initiating a countdown that could embroil everyone Mister X holds dear in a deadly new conflict! This volume collects Mister X: Eviction #1-#3, Mister X: Hard Candy, and the rarely seen short story Mister X: The Vanishing Breed

• A great jumping-on point to the classic series!

• What is the secret behind Radiant City’s pyschetecture?!

• Includes the short story The Vanishing Breed!

I started reading Mister X when it first came out under the Slave Labor banner, I think during the indie explosion of the late '80s and early '90s. Anyway, I usually don't care for Dean Motter's artwork, as he draws everything -- including people -- really angular and faceted. But the style I didn't care for in, say, "The Sacred and the Profane" in Star*Reach proved to be absolutely essential in Mister X, and I loved it. I don't think any other artist could do as well. Heck, I don't think any other artist could have made Mister X work at all! Honestly, the stories aren't all that compelling, and that was one reason I drifted away from reading Mister X (the other was its erratic publishing schedule in an era before I could order issues I'd missed on the Internet). But the artwork is compelling: Noirish, angular, chiaroscuro, arresting.

NEVER ENDING #1

(W) Adam P. Knave, D.J. Kirkbride (A/CA) Robert Love

Fighting crime isn't superhero Charles Baxter's main problem-it's fighting time! Trapped for decades in a superpowered body that never ages but is now driving him insane, Chuck's only hope for a "permanent cure" is to team up with his archnemesis Archibald Crane. He just needs the evil scientist to stop hitting him first!

•  The writers behind Amelia Cole deliver a strange, stunning superhero adventure!

•  Robert Love's superheroic follow-up to Number 13!

$3.99

NEXUS OMNIBUS VOLUME 4 TP

Comics great hero . . . NEXUS!

Mike Baron (W), Steve Rude (P/Cover), Paul Smith (P), John Nyberg (I), Les Dorscheid (C), and others

FC, 424 pages

$24.99

TP, 6” x 9”

With all of space his jurisdiction, Horatio Hellpop battles tyranny across the galaxy, but in the fallout of his now-notorious massacre on Mars, Nexus is forced to validate his performance as interstellar champion and executioner. However, tragedy threatens to strike again, as the artificial black hole known as the Gravity Well approaches collapse, endangering the entire solar system! Collects Nexus Volume 2 issues #40–#52 and The Next Nexus #1.

• Don’t miss original Nexus stories in Dark Horse Presents!

• The thrilling conclusion to a pivotal chapter of the Nexus saga!

• Over 400 pages!

I suspect younger fans will read some Nexus and wonder what all the fuss was about. To tell you the truth, he's not very special today. But when he first came out, back in the '80s I think, he was like nothing we'd ever seen before. Not only was the storyline unusual, but Baron and Rude's execution was something else. The fact that their irreverent, playful, non-linear approach has been copied by so many as to make it almost the new normal shows what an impact it had.

POLAR: CAME FROM THE COLD

(W/A/CA) Victor Santos

Ripped out of retirement by an assassination attempt, the world's most deadly spy-Black Kaiser-is on a collision course with a stab-happy torture expert and a seductive but deadly redhead. His mission only ends if he dies or kills everyone out to get him, and he's not in the habit of dying. This webcomic hit has been rescripted for print!

A guns-blazing espionage action-adventure in the grand tradition of Jim Steranko and Frank Miller.

By Victor Santos (Mice Templar)!

$17.99

This was a late add, so I didn't have time to look it up. Looks interesting, though, in a noir-ish, Whiteout sort of way.

Neil Gaiman (W) and Dave McKean (A/Cover)

FC, 96 pages

HC, 8 3/4” x 11 1/2”

A film director is dying of cancer. His greatest film would have told the story of a European village as the last hour of 999 AD approached—bringing Armageddon. Now that story will never be told. But he’s still working it out in his head, making a film that no one will ever see.

• A great partner to the Violent Cases hardcover!

• Dave McKean’s acclaimed Cages now back in print!

Another late add. How is it I've never heard of this? It's Neil Gaiman, so my first impulse is to buy it, no questions asked. But I've got time, so do you Legionnaires know anything about it?

THE EXTRA-SIZED CONCLUSION TO “DEATH OF A KING”! Aquaman now knows the true responsibility that comes with being King of Atlantis. But that means he and Mera face a difficult choice—one that could destroy the love that’s defined their lives! Villains become allies, friends become enemies, and the scope of Aquaman’s undersea world grows bigger than ever!

The last line sounds good. Aquaman needs a compelling hook, no pun intended. In the '60s the hook for me was Nick Cardy artwork, but ever since he's been -- at least for me -- a trademark looking for a reason to exist.

A BATMAN: ZERO YEAR tie-in! What crucial part did Barry Allen play in the Zero Year saga, and how did it shape his future as The Flash?

I'm guessing Zero Year -- Batman's debut -- occurred before Barry became The Flash. So this is probably an episode of "Barry Allen: CSI." But it would be even more interesting if this established that Barry was The Flash already, but it took him several years to work up to wearing the suit and operating in the open. But that probably won't happen.

1936160967?profile=RESIZE_180x180Portland, OR – A new President, freshly inaugurated and faced with an impossible scenario, a spaceship full of American heroes flung far across our solar system, unsure of whom or what will greet them, and a lone structure of unknown origin floating untouched in the vacuum of space.

These are but a few of the elements that have led to the maiden voyage of Charles Soule and Alberto Jiménez Alburqurque’s LETTER 44 #1 to sell out of its initial 22,000 copy print run!

"I am thrilled that so many people are finding and enjoying the first issue of Letter 44!” said Soule. “This is a series that is going to some amazing places–literally–and it's fantastic to have folks along for the ride. Go Space!"

Riding high atop its unique premise and eye-catching art, LETTER 44 #1 premiered in a special black and white variant edition at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year, fueling fans’ desire for the series to finally premiere with Guy Major’s vivid colors. Fans and retailers responded thunderously, depleting Diamond Comics Distributors’ stock of the specially priced $1 issue in less than a day.

“Letter 44 is a fun and original concept and is this week’s Challengers Choice book,” said Challengers Comics’ Patrick Brower. “Not just because it’s from Oni Press, whom we love, and not just because it’s written by Charles Soule, who is on fire, but also because it is a good book, worth way more than $1.00. As a retailer, this book is a wonderful addition to Challengers’ shelves. As a fan, I cannot wait for issue #2. Thanks, Oni!”

Holding its introductory price of $1, LETTER 44 #1 will be receiving a second printing with a new cover by superstar artist Javier Pulido (Daredevil, Hawkeye).

In "The Ballad of Ak" we follow the rapid rise and fall of Ak, a chief's assistant who is bullied and disrespected by the rest of his tribe. And in "Legendary", the misadventures of Muttonchomp and his goblin dog are proclaimed by the campfire. This is a tale of a goblin's meteoric rise to infamy alongside his 'faithful' companion!

The second collection of short stories actually consists of one long and two short tales. The first and longest story pays homage to one of the oldest folk tales of Japan, "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter." Usagi's faithful sidekick Luna is saved by and ends up developing a crush on an astrophysicist, whose dream of becoming an astronaut has been dashed by heart disease. His life is further complicated when he happens upon a mysterious crystal shard the same night he discovers a new comet. In another short tale, we get a deeper peek into Rei's background, and her unrequited feelings for her father's executive secretary. The final story, however, changes tone as a comedy that follows the children of Usagi and her fellow Sailor Guardians, who prove that apples do not fall far from their trees!

I don't know why I have always assumed that Sailor Moon is for adolescent girls, and therefore romance-y but sex-free. Boy, do I feel stupid now.

  • Avengers Arena #18 I take it, then, that you're not going to be reading the upcoming twelve issue maxi-series The X-Men All Punch One Another in the Face for No Apparent Reason?

Mr Peabody & Sherman #1: I actually liked Peabody & Sherman better than I liked Rocky & Bullwinkle.  Still no interest in this book, though.

Kingdom Hearts: This is a video game, which I've seen but never played. Apparently, it's a crossover between Disney and the Final Fantasy game series.

Pink:  Pink is the color the Japanese use for porn where we would use blue, i.e., a porno would be a "pink" movie instead of a "blue" movie. So, if if says "pink" in the title, there's a very good chance it's dirty.

Sailor Moon:  There's no explicit sex in the Sailor Moon manga that I've seen, although there are occasional scenes where Usagi and Mamoru  are seen in bed cuddling "innocently" together.  For aught we know, they may have just finished going at it like minks in heat, but it's never shown or even stated that they have.
