Quicksilver Action Figure Variant by JOHN TYLER CHRISTOPHER

32 PGS. • Rated T+ • $3.99

The old order changeth – more than you ever suspected! Today, Marvel is pleased to present your first look at AVENGERS #1.1 – a new 5-part story running alongside the highly anticipated Avengers ongoing series! From Eisner Award winning writer Mark Waid and artist Barry Kitson comes a secret from the Avengers past long since buried. For the first time ever, learn what really happened all those years ago when the founding Avengers turned their membership over to a set of new recruits. The recently thawed Captain America is joined by three reformed supervillains – Hawkeye, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch. Yet as a new group of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes takes shape, uncover the story you were never told. A story that will have direct ramifications on the Avengers of today in Mark Waid and Mike Del Mundo’s Avengers ongoing series! It all starts this November when Waid and Kitson breathe new life into this classic team in AVENGERS #1.1!

Normally, retconning of this nature is only of mild interest to me, but this by Mark Waid, and it's about one of my favorite Avengers periods -- about whose creation little has been established. I mean, really, one issue the Avengers are a team, and the next, "Well, Cap, all of us founding members have decided to go on vacation at the same time with zero notice. But don't worry, you won't be lonely -- we've left you three supervillains to babysit. Have fun!"

So, lay on, MacWaid!

You've been waiting and it's almost here! The next issue of BETTY & VERONICA by Adam Hughes arrives in comic shops and digital platforms next week on Nov. 9!

The latest hit New Riverdale series continues to defy expectations with some major surprises: including besties turning into enemies! The battle no one expected hits its peak as Betty and Veronica declare all-out war on each other! It’s a battle of benefits as Betty tries to raise money to save Pop’s, while Ronnie’s staging her own competing fundraisers in move destroy Betty’s efforts. All bets are off as the girls go from best pals to cutthroat competitors. You’ve never seen a car wash like this! Will the two icons find their way back to friendship, or is this the end of one of the longest-running partnerships in history?

You'll have to read BETTY & VERONICA #2 to find out.

(Sorry to tease, but that's what we do!)

Yes, it's late. What did you expect? Adam Hughes isn't known for being fast, or even doing interiors (he usually does covers). And he's doing the writing, too!

But it's not as late as all the other new Archie books, especially anything with Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa or Francisco Francavilla in the credits. (In their defense, Aguirre-Sacasa says he's busy with the new Riverdale TV show, where he's executive producing and writing, and Francavilla was in a car wreck. I have no idea why Shield, Hangman and Jughead come out so rarely.)

And the first issue was a marvel. I'll take quality like this no matter how long it takes to come out.

It’s the series you’ve been waiting for! Seen everywhere from TIME, Good Morning America, Entertainment Weekly and more – the character talked about the world over is making her solo series debut this November! Marvel is proud to present INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #1 – the new series launching as part of Marvel NOW! Superstar writer Brian Michael Bendis joins rising star artist Stefano Caselli to chronicle the ongoing adventures of Marvel’s newest hero, Riri Williams!

Forged on the violent streets of Chicago, this 15-year old MIT student is going it alone and ready to show the Marvel Universe what she can do as Ironheart!

Making her debut earlier this year in the pages of Invincible Iron Man, Riri Williams will explode out of the pages of Civil War II and into the boots of the Armored Avenger. Reverse-engineering her own set of armor to make the world a better place, Riri will lead the charge as Iron Man! Well, for now. She’s working on the name! But what has become of Tony Stark? What could have happened during Civil War II to make him hang up the repulsors? That is, if he makes it out in one piece!

“We’re in the middle of a very big Tony Stark storyline – actually three storylines converging,” says Brian Michael Bendis, speaking with TIME. “His best friend died, his company is collapsing and he’s finding out who his biological parents were all at the same time. How that all shakes out such that Tony is no longer in the armor? You’ll have to wait to find out for the end of Civil War II. But it does create a path for Riri Williams, who Tony will know and will be interacting with very shortly in the comics.”

Strap in and suit up, True Believer. There’s a new hero in town. And she’s ready to take the Marvel Universe by storm. Be there as Bendis and Caselli armor up to bring you a new armored hero for Marvel NOW! Don’t miss INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #1 – coming to comic shops and digital devices everywhere this fall!

For a change, there's a good reason to start this title over for the umpty-ump time -- Tony Stark is being replaced by a new character. Initially we were told the character was going to call herself Ironheart, but that's in question now (possibly due to trademark problems). So we'll see.

Titan are excited to announce THE MUMMY -- a brand-new miniseries that reanimates the character, as imagined by legendary Horror studio, Hammer.

This series, written by the legendary Peter Milligan and drawn by Ronilson Freire, was revealed on Friday's San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC). The attached cover was beautifully delivered by John McCrea.

For 2000 years the Sect of Anubis have prolonged their life spans through human sacrifice and the enslavement of an Egyptian High Priestess cursed to walk the afterlife for all eternity.

On one night every 30 years the Sect must offer up a human vessel to house the spirit of the priestess Nebetah so that they can kill her and drink her blood, thus granting them immortality.

But this year they have chosen the wrong vessel and she’s not going willingly…

The Mummy #1 kicks off Titan's exciting Hammer comics line which was announced at last year's ComicsPRO. The line will see the publication of brand-new comic stories featuring classic Hammer properties, as well as wholly original Hammer stories, produced by Titan.

Fans not wanting to miss out on further news of this exciting series, should follow Titan Comics on Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook for more information.

Oh, would the Li'l Capn have loved this line when he was actually watching the Hammer films for the first time! But better late than never ...

VIOLENT LOVE #1

Publisher: IMAGE COMICS

Writer: FRANK J. BARBIERE

Art/Covers: VICTOR SANTOS

40 PAGES • FC • M • $3.99

Creators Frank J. Barbiere (FIVE GHOSTS, The Revisionist) and artist Victor Santos (THE MICE TEMPLAR, Polar) team up for a fresh, pulp-infused criminal romance in VIOLENT LOVE. The new ongoing series is set to launch from Image Comics this November.

In VIOLENT LOVE, readers meet Daisy Jane and Rock Bradley -- two of the most notorious bank robbers in the American Southwest. And then they fell in love.

Violent Love is a dream project for me in a lot of ways. First and foremost, I think Victor is one of the most talented graphic storytellers around, and it’s an honor to be collaborating with him and have him as my co-creator on Violent Love,” said Barbiere. “I’m also thrilled to be back at Image where I launched my career in comics. I’m a big fan of crime in comics, and I think it’s very important to find something new and interesting to say within the genre. With Violent Love, we’re bringing a unique style, story structure, and romantic angle to crime comics -- we can’t wait for you to fall in love with these characters and see where our story goes."

Santos added: "My first work in the U.S. was at Image -- a graphic novel titled Zombee. This was 10 years ago, Image was different but promising. Later I worked on Mice Templar for almost five years. I am proud of how Image has been linked to my career, always giving me the chance to develop personal projects. Now with Violent Love, I am a more experienced artist and can again work with a close collaborator -- a talented writer and a good friend -- on the kind of stories I love to do and read. This book has the big words: Romance, Crime, Violence, Betrayal and Love. I'm sure you’ll fall in love with this couple of rebel souls."

VIOLENT LOVE begins the adventure with a double-sized issue that oozes style and will rope readers in with its fast-paced action.

Another first issue from Image in one of my favorite genres, crime noir. Or is it romance? Either way, this genre-bender may give the Brubaker-Phillips team some competition.

Is it me, or does Cover A show some Bruce Timm influence?

LOCAL COMIC SHOP DAY

There have been a few LCSD books announced/released already -- I think DC released theirs last week -- but this week sees the bulk of them. Local Comics Shop Day isn't until Nov. 19, so we may see another wave next week.

Anyway, most of them seem like recycled Free Comic Book Day (or Halloween Comicfest) books, but there are some things that are exclusive (see below). As to this year's LCSD, here's what Image had to say:

About Local Comic Shop Day:

Local Comic Shop Day® will be held on November 19, 2016 this year.

For 2016, the date has been changed to the Saturday before Small Business Saturday. “We polled participating retailers if they preferred to have Local Comic Shop Day® on November 19th or November 26th,” said ComicsPRO President Peter Dolan (Main Street Comics, Middletown NY). “By a margin of 73 percent to 27 percent, our retailers wanted to change the date to the earlier Saturday so it would have a distinct identity separate from Small Business Saturday.”

Local Comic Shop Day® is the only Comic Book Industry event created and run by retailers for retailers. “Last year nearly 400 storefronts participated in Local Comic Shop Day®,” said ComicsPRO Executive Director Marco Davanzo (Alakazam Comics, Irvine CA). “Each and every one of these retailers has a voice in how we grow the day -- that’s why we polled them and will continue to ask their opinions as we go forward.”

Wakanda, the African country and home of the Black Panther, is the most sophisticated and technologically advanced nation on Earth. Its influence reaches across all of the Marvel Universe, and today Marvel Comics is proud to present an all-new series devoted to the exploring the people of this fascinating locale. Spinning directly out of the best-selling Black Panther by Ta-Nehisi Coates & Brian Stelfreeze comes the highly anticipated BLACK PANTHER: WORLD OF WAKANDA #1!

Writer Roxane Gay (Bad Feminist, An Untamed State) makes her Marvel Comics debut alongside Ta-Nehisi Coates and artist Alitha E. Martinez to spin a Wakandan love story – its tenderness matched only by its brutality. You know them now as The Midnight Angels, but before that they were just Ayo and Aneka, young women recruited to join the Dora Milaje – an elite task force trained to protect the crown. Even if it means their lives. What happens when your nation needs your hearts and minds, but you’ve already given them to each other?

“Under the leadership of Ayo and Aneka, the Dora Milaje decide to expand their mission, to not only serve as protection for Black Panther, but to also right wrongs, particularly against women, in Wakanda and around the world,” Gay says. “They also have to deal with the repercussions of Aneka murdering a village chieftain, as well as a threat from within.”

As BLACK PANTHER: WORLD OF WAKANDA continues, each arc will focus on characters from Wakanda, and the surrounding nations, creating a key companion title to Coates’ current series.

Additionally, the first issue of BLACK PANTHER: WORLD OF WAKANDA will feature a 10-page backup story from acclaimed poet Yona Harvey (Hemming the Water) and Coates with artist Afua Richardson that explores the origin of Zenzi, the mysterious leader of The People, the group currently causing so much unrest in Wakanda. T’Challa thinks he knows who Zenzi is and how she got her powers, but he only knows part of the story.

“Intelligent and willful, Zenzi's intimate knowledge of her home and its people drives her belief that her way of revolution will correct the current path of Wakanda,” says Harvey. “This is the story of how Erik Killmonger's creation learned to master her powers of persuasion at a young age and ultimately use them against the monarchy: only The People can lead the people.”

"BLACK PANTHER: WORLD OF WAKANDA offers a new canvas for storytelling in the Marvel Universe where top-tier talent can explore the limitless possibility of the world of Black Panther," says Marvel EiC, Axel Alonso.  "Roxane, Alitha, Yona and Afua are crafting a series that is essential reading because it takes readers even deeper into the hearts and minds of the rich array of characters introduced in Ta-Nehisi's groundbreaking story and further positions them for greatness within the Marvel Universe."

On the edge of revolution, the nation of Wakanda stands at a crossroad, defended and challenged by those closest to its heart.  Revolution has arrived and change is coming! Be here this fall as BLACK PANTHER: WORLD OF WAKANDA breaks down the barriers and ushers in a new age that will further expand the world of the Black Panther across the entire Marvel Universe.

Oh, how original, more lesbians. *Sigh* Well, if that's what it takes to make the Black Panther franchise a success (finally), so be it.

DAYS MISSING VOL 3: ENOX

Publisher: AMERICAN MYTHOLOGY PUBLICATIONS

Writer: PHIL HESTER

Art: JEREMY ROCK

Art/Cover DALE KEOWN

HC • 136 pages • $19.99

Roddenberry fans and those of comic book veteran Phil Hester rejoice! The long awaited third installment of the Days Missing saga, DAYS MISSING: ENOX, is officially being released this fall. It’s been over five years coming and anxious readers have been waiting to learn the fate of the Steward’s legendary journey. The first two volumes of the critically acclaimed series garnered high praise from science fiction fans and industry professionals alike, and the latest installment brings the same group of immensely talented creators back to conclude the tale.

Under license from Roddenberry Entertainment, American Mythology Productions (AM) will release Days Missing: Enox as an original graphic novel celebrating the series’ epic conclusion. American Mythology will also be re-releasing the first and second books in the series, Days Missing and Days Missing: Kestus, for fans who want to collect the whole saga.

Since the beginning of time, there has existed a being whose interaction and interference with mankind has shaped human history. His powers of time and intellect have allowed his secrecy and resulted in certain days being absent from any historical record. Their stories have never been told. Their details have never been documented. Their existence is not remembered. But, the occurrences of these days have forever changed the course of humanity's evolution. These are the "Days Missing" from our existence, and they are about to be revealed.

The third volume will feature series writer, Phil Hester, who penned the previous installments, and the interior art is provided by Felipe Watanabe with the cover by Dale Keown. Hester is excited to bring the next chapter of the tale to the fans worldwide that have followed along and are ready for this spectacular conclusion to finally be told. The author continues his support for the series and can be reached for interviews and other media engagements by contacting American Mythology direct via the information below, or by contacting Barlow@americanmythologyproductions.com.

“When you think science fiction, what name immediately comes to mind?” asked Michael Bornstein, American Mythology’s Publisher. “Gene Roddenberry, of course! As a pioneer and icon in the genre, Roddenberry Entertainment is carrying on his work by providing new worlds to be enjoyed by generations to come. Days Missing is a property that doesn’t come around every day, not even every year so, as a publisher, we literally pounced on the opportunity to release the third book in the series. We’re very honored for Days Missing: Enox to have found a home with us here at American Mythology, and we’re ecstatic to be able to bring this wonderful series the recognition it deserves.”

I read the first two. They were OK. The premise is exciting, but the execution was sorta predictable.

TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE: SCRIPTS BY JOE HILL (HC)

Publisher: IDW PUBLISHING

Writer: JOE HILL

Art/Cover: CHARLES PAUL WILSON III

HC • BW • $17.99 • 136 pages • 6” x 9”

World Fantasy, International Horror Guild, and Bram Stoker Award-winning author Joe Hill turns his attention to a legend -- Tales From The Darkside.

Originally planned as a reboot for the storied series, Hill’s scripts for these never-broadcast television episodes allow the New York Times bestselling author to stretch his creative muscles, his effortless mastery of the twisted subject matter injecting new terrors into this silver screen legend.

Joining Hill in resurrecting this classic is Charles Paul Wilson III, known to many Joe Hill fans as the artist responsible for the nightmare vision made real in their most recent collaboration, Wraith, a graphic novel prequel to the Hill’s bestselling book N0S4A2. In Tales From The Darkside, Wilson’s tack-sharp interpretation of Hill’s vision is on display in a series of illustrations accompanying the scripts.

“When I was offered a chance to reinvent Tales from The Darkside, I leapt,” said Hill. “This was a landmark show for my generation: our Twilight Zone, our Outer Limits. Right away, I wanted to do something that honored the spirit of the original Darkside ... and at the same time I wanted to go bigger, to do something fresh, something with scope. In the end I wrote three scripts and sketched a vision for a whole Darkside universe. I envisioned a series of individual horror stories that would, ultimately, turn out to be connected by a single mythology. I really wanted to do something with the scale of Locke & Key. TV is tough and in the end we didn't quite make it to the little screen. But it's a delight and a thrill to share the scripts alongside Charles Paul Wilson's beautifully sick illustrations. Here's the show that could've been, now playing in your imagination.”

“Working with Joe and Charles is always a pleasure. I mean, what we create is terrifying -- why else would you pair the two together -- but the results are never short of exemplary,” said project editor Justin Eisinger. “And this exploration of an alternate TFTD television universe that could have been … well, if you’re a fan of horror anthologies this is one you do not want to miss.”

First created by George A. Romero, Tales From The Darkside offered a grim but compelling anthology-style series. Hill’s scripts for the unaired reboot of the series will debut in the eponymous comic series beginning this June, but fans looking for more raw Hill, this new scriptbook provides a unique glimpse into the creative process, and a look at what could have been.

WHO KILLED CURT KOBAIN?

Publisher: IDW PUBLISHING

Writer/Art: NICOLAS OTERO

Cover: VÉRANE OTERO

HC • FC • $24.99 • 152 pages

The most iconic singer/songwriter of his generation, Kurt Cobain left behind a phenomenal body of work, legions of fans, and a mystery … a final letter addressed to “Boddah.”

Now, award-winning creator Nicolas Otero brings the story of this note to life in the forthcoming original graphic novel Who Killed Kurt Cobain?: The Story of Boddah. Based on the French novel, Le Roman de Boddah by Heloise Guay de Bellissen, this adaptation -- a work of fiction -- recounts real-life events from Cobain’s life, as narrated by his childhood imaginary friend, Boddah.

Through the eyes of Boddah, readers get a front-row seat to the highs and lows of one of music’s most influential voices like they’ve never experienced before. Trace the arc of modern rock’s greatest icon from the dark clubs of Seattle to the bright lights of the world stage … and all the angst, horror and thrill that came with that ride in this captivating graphic tale.

“I was 17 when Nirvana and Kurt Cobain came to Paris in 1992,” recalls artist Nicolas Otero. “I saw them live the day before my graduation and it was … explosive, mind-blowing, sonic and so powerful. When Kurt put an end to his life in 1994, I remember hearing the name of Boddah for the first time. I thought it could be a fantastic way to tell Kurt’s story, with Boddah as the narrator. Twenty years later, my hair is not long nor dirty, I’m the father of three wonderful kids, and life has given me such a great gift. I can finally draw this little voice and explore what I imagined Kurt’s mind and life were inside. I hope you’ll enjoy reading it as I enjoyed doing it. I’m 17 again today.”

“Nirvana blew the world open my freshman year of high school and were gone before graduation. In 1993 I saw them play on Halloween with Kurt dressed as Barney the dinosaur” said editor, Justin Eisinger. “But I didn’t know about Boddah. I’d never really thought about this mythical life — Kurt’s — from any perspective other than MTV-spawned voyeur. What Otero does here is impressive. His exploration peels back the curtain, showing another way to perceive this person’s life and accomplishments. Boddah’s narration is endearing and haunting … leading us to question what we expect to find inside those we idolize. After all, what do we know of our heroes?”

Who Killed Kurt Cobain? is a fictionalized telling of Cobain’s life through the eye’s of his imaginary friend, Boddah.” – Spin

DEADLY HANDS OF KUNG FU OMNIBUS VOL 1 (HC)

Publisher: MARVEL COMICS

Writer/Art: Various

Cover: GABRIELE DELL'OTTO

Rated T+ • $125.00

Kung-fu fever had struck the United States! Hot on the heels of the breakout hit MASTER OF KUNG FU, Marvel launched the amazing oversized DEADLY HANDS OF KUNG FU magazine -- headlined by Shang-Chi, Iron Fist and the Sons of the Tiger! Artists including Rudy Nebres, George Pérez, Jim Starlin and Paul Gulacy gave DEADLY HANDS their all. With stunning painted covers by the likes of Neal Adams, issues of DEADLY HANDS featured not just the comic-art adventures of Marvel's greatest kung-fu heroes -- but also extensive interviews; martial-arts guides; photo features; and movie, TV and book reviews! Whatever you wanted to know about martial arts, DEADLY HANDS had a kung-fu grip on it! Collecting DEADLY HANDS OF KUNG FU (1974) #1-18 and SPECIAL, and DEADLIEST HEROES OF KUNG FU.

I remember enjoying these magazines back in the day, but I was much younger and I don't know how well they will hold up. But there was some nice art, especially if you enjoy Rudy Nebres or early George Perez. And I liked seeing more adventures for the martial arts characters, some of whom didn't appear much in the monthly books. That is to say, characters like the Sons of the Tiger, Misty Knight and Colleen Wing (and later White Tiger) got most of their background and characterization established in DHoKF, as opposed to the color books.

And this is without the Li'l Capn having seen a single martial arts movie. I was only aware of the fad thanks to Marvel Comics, because if Bruce Lee films ever made it to Memphis, I never heard about them. How many others in fly-over country had that experience in this case or others?

Anyway, I finally saw Enter the Dragon and a couple of others on late-night TV a decade or so later -- which finally explained all those comics I read in the '70s!

This version of Space Ghost has an entirely different origin than the one we're experiencing in Future Quest, and I have to say I much prefer the current version. This dreary exercise didn't get me very excited, despite my lifelong love of Space Ghost. But, hey, I'll take what I can get!

I'm sure Sugar and Spike purists are screaming bloody murder, but this looks like fun -- especially if you're familiar with some of the wackiness of the Silver Age that can in no way fit into modern continuity.

  • DEADLY HANDS OF KUNG FU OMNIBUS VOL 1 (HC)

I have loved the Shang-Chi Omnibuses and have been waiting for this one for -- well, decades!

  • I dislike giving characters multiple books because it dilutes the original series. It also promotes more crossovers. And the second title usually features secondary characters and it feels unnecessary. Keep the subplots in the main title. It's not our fault the writer is more interested in his creations instead of the hero of the book!

Richard, MOKF was a revelation to the young Captain. I think, to some degree, the art carried it -- Paul Gulacy and Mike Zeck leap to mind, often accompanied by eye-popping covers -- so the story only had to be adequate But it was usually better than adequate, and I relished the book. Marvel showered a lot of talent on a title that could easily have been a third-tier afterthought.

Deadly Hands of Kung Fu wasn't quite that good. But I remember enjoying it, if for no other reason (as I mentioned) for its expansion of Marvel's kung fu lineup/background. (Sons of the Tiger and White Tiger didn't debut in Iron Fist or MOKF -- they got their start in DHoKF.) And I mildly enjoyed reading articles about the kung fu craze almost like an anthropologist reading about a foreign culture (New York City) in which I had done my Master's work.

Let me know if it holds up.

Yay, Betty and Veronica! Josey and the Pussycats #1 was a delight, so sign me up. An adult Sugar and Spike with Keith Giffen? Will an Ambush Bug team up be far behind? Sounds very meta...

I'll second that yay, Clowny! I have found both B&V and Josie to be genuinely entertaining (while the title I most anticipated, Jughead, is so far only adequate). I even picked up Archie Vol. 1 and Afterlife with Archie Vol. 1 for my wife to sample. (Then I'll hit her with B&V Vol 1 and Josie Vol 1 in a few months. Bam!)

I've been getting the Archie Archives, and found the last couple (1948-49) to be little different from the comics I read in the mid-1960s (except for the notable absence of Dan DeCarlo). The early ones were fascinating, as we got to see the characters evolving (like Jughead quietly joining the middle class), the false steps (like the adults drooling over B&V) corrected, and so forth. But by 1949, the characters, tropes, rhythm and patterns were already in place. Which means the Archie characters basically went 60 years with a lot less change than, say, Superman. That supports the idea, to me anyway, that the revamps were both long overdue and necessary. The fact that they're mostly terrific and involve A-list talent is, honestly, exciting to this aging fanboy.

  • I certainly will.

  • Somehow I missed this Avengers 1.1 mini coming out. I'll probably pick it up either in trade or back issues at my LCS (hes good at putting sets together and selling them cheaper than trades).  I am fully onboard with the Waid/Kitson creative. Who I think has been vastly underrated all of these years.

I meant to say soothing last week, but I totally agree with you about the lesbians in comics. I was tired of it a few years ago though. To me it seems mainly to be titillation of the fanyboy, as I'm sure the lesbian to gay man ratio is seriously out of whack in comics. I tried the new Black Panther series and it just didn't click with me. He is one of my all-time favorites, and I really wanted to like it. I'm passing on the new series as well. Plus, I loathe Marvel's new practice of charging more for a first issue. Even if this one is 40 pages.

I thought that Space Ghost mini series was okay, but I absolutely loved the art and covers. For me that was worth the price of admission alone.

I have no love, or familiarity, really of the original Sugar & Spike. I just didn't find this version very interesting
