BEST BETS

DEADPOOL'S ART OF WAR #1 (of 4, $3.99, Marvel): I'm not the biggest 'Pool fan around, but even I can see the comedic possibilities of the Merc with a Mouth emulating Sun Tzu and writing his own version of the Chinese general's classic. Irreverent, no doubt, and probably pretty funny.
DEATH OF WOLVERINE #4 (of 4, $4.99. Marvel): After three months of countdown and too many tie-ins to count, Logan is finally shuffling off this mortal coil. But don't despair, Wolvie fans -- he'll still live on in our hearts and minds. And also in lots more comics! Like:
DEATH OF WOLVERINE: THE LOGAN LEGACY #1 (of 7): Gone but not forgotten, Wolverine's memory is the animating force behind this miniseries, which will depict the impact of Logan's death on Daken, Lady Deathstrike, Mystique, Sabretooth and X-23. Each issue will feature a different creative team. And if you're into this, don't miss Wolverine and the X-Men #10 ($4.99, Marvel), which features Logan's will. And stay tuned next months for Death of Wolverine: Life After Logan #1 (one-shot, $4.99) and Death of Wolverine: The Weapon X Project #1-2 (of 5, $3.99 each). Like Elvis, Wolverine will be just as busy post-mortem as he was when he was alive!
ONE DOLLAR DEBUTS (Valiant, $1 each): Valiant comics celebrates its third year with reprints of the first issues of five important titles: Archer & Armstrong, Harbinger, Rai, Unity and X-O Manowar, plus the Valiant Handbook. It's good marketing, but also a good product: You get a lot of comic book goodness for six bucks!
Q2: THE RETURN OF QUANTUM & WOODY #1 (of 5, $3.99, Valiant): The creators of Quantum and Woody, writer Christopher Priest and artist M.D. Bright, return to tell the final tale of "their" Quantum and Woody. Yes, the original world's worst super-team returns, 20 years older and considerably jowlier, in what is described as their final adventure. And who better to tell their last story than those who told their first?
SKYLANDERS #1 (of 5, $3.99, IDW): Evidently Skylanders is a popular video game that has spawned equally successful action figures. Now there's a comic book, and since it's written by veteran Ron Marz, it's likely to be pretty good whether you're a fan of the game or not.
SLEEPY HOLLOW #1 ($3.99, BOOM!): Ichabod Crane and Lt. Abbie Mills come from the hit TV show to comics!
UNITY #0 ($3.99, Valiant): Matt Kindt (Mind MGMT) and Cary Nord (Conan) weave a tale of a group that long preceded Unity, a team of heroes led by the Eternal Warrior in World War I. Who were they? What were they? I'm as curious as you are!
Titles are grouped alphabetically by publisher, in this order:

You know, what really stuck with me from Prometheus is that the Charlize Theron character would have lived if she had just run at an angle from the falling ship instead of parallel, remaining directly under it no matter how far she ran. Or she could have just, you know, turned. What a maroon!

At least these blurbs aren't calling her "beautiful" any more. Seriously, look at that chick. I'm not hung up on looks, but I am pretty hung up on words being used accurately, and in no way does "beautiful" apply here.

Art by GREG CAPULLO and DANNY MIKI
Cover by GREG CAPULLO
240 pg, FC, $24.99 US
Before the Batcave and Robin, The Joker and the Batmobile, there was ZERO YEAR. The Riddler has plunged Gotham City into darkness. How will a young Dark Knight bring his beloved hometown from the brink of chaos and madness and back into the light? This final ZERO YEAR volume collects BATMAN #25-27 and 29-33.
I started reading this, and realized I had no idea what was going on -- nothing from Volume 4 had stuck with me, so I pulled that back out for a re-read. Evidently even my subconscious isn't thrilled with this storyline. I love me some Scott Snyder, but "Dark City" went on about six months too long.

In the printed versions of these comics, the logos and trade dress squish the giant reverse type, which Bleeding Cool slams as DC being too chicken to let this unusual cover treatment stand alone. I think that's a bit harsh -- it's really unusual cover treatment even with the logos, and I was pleased to see DC have the courage to experiment. And these covers certainly stand out!

... and I'm not crazy about them myself! What's to like about this trio? One is superfluous, one is a complete cipher and one is the actual, for-real Judas Iscariot. (I'll let you guys figure out which is which.) All three are immortal and have managed to have zero impact on history despite centuries of living in it. Geez, even the pre-heroic Wolverine managed to overcome his cynicism long enough to fight in the world wars!

IDW Publishing has been known for the quality and care given to some of the most beloved all-ages properties, and Skylanders is no different. The videogame sensation is making the leap to the pages of comics this July, debuting at Comic-Con International: San Diego 2014. “We are thrilled to be combining Skylanders, the pioneer of the toys to life video game genre, with IDW, one of the industry’s leading comic-book publishers in the U.S.,” said Ashley Maidy, vice president of global licensing and partnerships at Activision. “The comic-book series will offer fans a glimpse into the backstories of their favorite Skylanders characters, expanding on the universe that they’ve embraced so enthusiastically in the franchise’s short history. To explore the world of Skylands beyond the game is an opportunity we know our fans have long been awaiting, and we couldn’t be more excited to see this manifested through a comic series.”
Skylanders will also join IDW’s successful Micro Comic Fun Packs line-up this fall and will be available in comic-book stores as well as mass-market retailers this October. “The idea behind creating a Skylanders comic book series resonates strongly with us on so many levels – the storyline and audience appeals to the comic book world and feels like a seamless relationship,” says David Hedgecock, IDW’s Managing Editor and Editor of the Skylanders series. “We’re honored to be the publisher of choice to introduce the world of Skylanders into the comic-book landscape.”

THE FIELD (TPB)
Story: ED BRISSON
Art / Cover: SIMON ROY
128 PAGES / FC / M / $14.99
Collects THE FIELD #1-4 and extras, including all-new material.
A man wakes up in a field, wearing only his underwear, with no memory, no identity and no idea what to do. A cell phone beside him buzzes with a message. A single word: “Run.” A deadly cat-and-mouse story ensues in THE FIELD, a graphic novel by Ed Brisson (SHELTERED, COMEBACK) and Simon Roy (PROPHET), out from Image Comics this October.
The man falls into the grips of a Bible salesman on a meth-fueled murder spree in a small town where the rules of civilization seem not to apply. Pursued by a biker gang bent on revenge and a group of cosplayers out to save the world, the man begins to wonder -- Is Christian the Bible salesman really his only hope for survival?
Writer Brisson has cited 1980s B-movies like Repo Man as an inspiration for THE FIELD, but the germ of a story came to him as a Twitter prank in after a friend jokingly declared Brisson missing after a night at a bar.
“I just started tweeting about how I’d woken up in a wheat field naked and in the middle of Saskatchewan,” Brisson said in an interview with Multiversity Comics. “And I just tweeted about all this crazy sh*t that was happening to me, how I had this cellphone and people kept calling me on the cellphone and threatening me and sending me text messages that my life was in danger. Then I got picked up by this guy who brought me on a crime spree.”
After reassuring his friends and family that he was not really in danger, Brisson realized he had a story and that Simon Roy would be the perfect artist for it. Roy is the lead artist and co-writer on the surreal re-imagining of Rob Liefeld’s PROPHET with Brandon Graham. Besides a keen eye for the bizarre, Roy brings a loose style that captures the Lynchian atmosphere of the world of THE FIELD.
THE FIELD will be in comic book stores on October 15 and bookstores on October 28 and is available for pre-order now. It has been optioned by Canadian company LaRue Entertainment for production as a feature film.

DEADPOOL'S ART OF WAR #1 (of 4)
Written by PETER DAVID
Art & Cover by SCOTT KOBLISH
Variant cover by CHRIS BURNHAM
32 PGS / Parental Advisory / $3.99
It’s been called the definitive work on military strategy and tactics. Sun Tzu’s seminal Art of War has influenced warfare for hundreds of years ... which means it’s totally in the public domain and ripe for being ripped off by Deadpool!
From the battlefield to business and beyond, there has never been a work of more import when it comes to strategy and preparation. Until now! Today, Marvel is proud to announce DEADPOOL’S ART OF WAR #1 -- the first chapter in a new 4-issue mini-series from New York Times Bestselling writer Peter David (All-New X-Factor, The Incredible Hulk) and fan-favorite artist Scott Koblish (Deadpool)!
The Merc With a Mouth knows a thing or two about combat, and he’s gearing up to write his own version of Art of War. I mean, Sun Tzu didn’t even have laser guided missiles or an Incredible Hulk back then, so how accurate can his book on war really be? But it’ll take more than a great book if Deadpool wants to outsell the original. His plan? Cause enough chaos and war across the world that they’ll have to buy his book when it comes out! How’s that for strategy?

Prepare for the biggest Spider-Man event of all-time as every Spider-Man from every universe unites to stop a threat that could spell extinction for their kind! Today, Marvel is proud to present your first look at EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE #5 – the final chapter in the blockbuster 5-issue mini-series showcasing different Spider-Men (and women) of the Spider-Verse! Eisner Award-winning writer Gerard Way (Umbrella Academy) makes his Marvel debut alongside rising star artist Jake Wyatt for a Spider-Man tale unlike any other!
“In a futurist city fairly different from the New York we are familiar with, our version of Spider-Man takes the shape of a government project: SP//dr,” says Gerard Way, in an interview with Marvel.com “SP//dr is comprised of three vital components: a pilot, a machine, and a radioactive sentient spider acting as one half of the brain that makes it all work. Peni Parker is a young girl, who, left parentless, is adopted by her Aunt May and Uncle Ben, the two heads of the SP//dr project. When they realize Peni is the only one who can successfully pair with SP//dr, they make the unorthodox decision to train her as SP//dr's newest pilot.”
As Peni Parker suits up in her incredible spider-powered armor, explore the incredible new universe she inhabits. Yet even though, she pilots her unstoppable machine, it still may not be enough to save her universe from the onslaught of Morlun. Edge of Spider-Verse concludes in grand fashion this October as Way & Wyatt take you to an incredible new universe in EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE #5!

Variant Cover by CHRISTIAN WARD
The secrets of the critically acclaimed Original Sin continue to spill out this October as the adventure continues in ORIGINAL SIN ANNUAL #1 -- from Jason Latour and Enis Cisic! The information the Watcher kept has brought to light shocking secrets about Thor, Spider-Man, the Avengers and more. But perhaps the most mysterious is that of Woodrow McCord – the enigmatic, world protector who heroically gave his life in Original Sin #5 before passing the torch to Nick Fury.
Answering to no one and with the safety of an entire planet under his watch, witness the secret history of one of the Marvel Universe’s greatest architects as he shapes the world our heroes know in secret. Latour & Cisic explore the never-before-told backstory of the alien-fighting, weapon-toting, monster-brawling McCord as he safeguards the world in secret. Operating as the mysterious “Man on the Wall,” he fought the battles too big for anyone on Earth to fight. Not because he wanted to, but because he had to.
“The job is getting out there rattling cages, getting in the heads of people who want to harm Earth” says Jason Latour in an interview with Marvel.com. “Stopping trouble before it starts, by any means necessary. In the eyes of a lot of these more belligerent alien races, the Earth was ripe for the picking. It was a silent, shadow war and for quite a while McCord was the only soldier we had.”
McCord fought an endless, solitary war in secret. But did he lose his own humanity in the process? Find out as the bombastic tale of a two-fisted sci-fi pulp story of the savior of the Marvel Universe stands revealed in October’s ORIGINAL SIN ANNUAL #1!

But danger lurks beneath the waves, and little do they realize that Ariana's new recruit carries a secret that could shake the Sea to its very floor.

I know that female pirate captains is a story trope going back at least to Pippi Longstocking, but how many women do you think there actually were on pirate ships? And of that probably tiny number, how many do think were in charge?
Frankly, the life of any woman who found herself in the company of pirates would not have a good day. And it would probably be her last.

COLLECTOR (HC)
Publisher: BOOM! STUDIOS
Writer/Art/Cover: SERGIO TOPPI
WHY WE LOVE IT: The late Sergio Toppi remains one of the great master sequential artists whose work inspired a generation of illustrators and comic artists who followed him. The Collector is Toppi's longest-running original series, now translated into English for the first time since its debut in 1984.
WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT: Toppi's breathtaking line work and composition will leave you staring at his pages for hours. While this oversized edition serves as much as an art book as a comic, the adventures of the globe-scouring, daredevil Collector will appeal to fans of Indiana Jones, Five Ghosts or Doc Savage.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Far from the auction halls of the elite, The Collector seeks out rare and mysterious artifacts across the world. He is at home in the salons of Paris as he is in the jungles of Borneo. Set against the backdrop of late 19thcentury colonialism, The Collector is a delightful, swashbuckling adventure!

COMPLETE JOHNNY NEMO (HC)
Publisher: TITAN COMICS
Writer: PETER MILLIGAN
Art/Cover: BRETT EWINS
The existentialist hitman of the future! New London of 2921 is a crowded, filthy slime-pit awash with Death-Juice junkies, Latin-spouting armored fascists, exploding nuns and a religious cult who worship Bing Crosby's left testicle. It's also home to ultra-violent, foul-mouthed private eye Johnny Nemo, a streetwise PI who deals in death and simple solutions to complex problems! This classic, remastered collection features never-before-seen art and is the crowning glory of award-winning writer, Peter Milligan and artist Brett Ewins.
$22.99
I have a few Johnny Nemo comics, or maybe just Johnny Nemo appearances in anthologies, from back whenever he was originally published (late 1970s?). But I never read enough of him to get a sense of what he was about. Now that the solicitation has explained it to me, I think I've probably read all I need to. Not that it was bad or anything, and back then it was probably somewhat original. But the dystopic future cynical killer anti-hero thing doesn't have much more to say to me.

DMC #1 (GN)
Publisher: DARRYL MAKES COMICS
Writers: DARRYL MCDANIELS & Various
Art: FELIPE SMITH & Various
Cover: SAL BUSCEMA
It's 1985 in New York City. Wildstyle graffiti covers subway cars as. B-boys break and spin in playgrounds and on street corners. Koch is mayor. Drugs and crime rule the streets. A terrifying plague is brewing in the shadows. And as the populace loses faith in the police, a man named Bernard Goetz is being hailed as a hero for shooting four teenagers in a subway car.
In this 1985, however, the city's brand new guardian angels wear spandex and capes, wielding their gadgets and their superpowers to clean up the City -- even if their methods hurt more people than they help. There's the deluded "graffiti king" Mr. Marx patrolling the tunnels; the dark moral crusader The Puritan who stalks the shadows of the Lower East Side; and above it all, the godlike Helios, darling of the Upper East Side and the NYPD. It seems like only some of New York's residents are benefitting from these vigilantes' protection. The rest whisper the name of another hero: DMC.
You see, in this 1985, Darryl McDaniels (Run DMC) never rocks the mic to become one of hip-hop's most enduring icons. Instead, he dons his tracksuit and Adidas sneakers to defends the city's marginalized citizens against super villain and super hero alike, leaving no traces besides the imprint of his knuckle rings on his opponents' faces. (By day, though, he teaches junior high school English.) With the help of reporter Charlie Cooper and a band of graffiti artists led by the spunky Lak6, DMC must confront the new "heroes," and investigate whether there's anything behind their sudden appearance.
DMC, the inaugural title from Darryl Makes Comics, imagines an alternate history that blends traditional comic book storytelling with the pressures and anxieties of 1980's NYC, and explores how we got to where we are now. DMC is a superhero for those who need one most.
