THIS WEEK'S COMICS
Titles listed in the Comics Guide come from the weekly list at the Diamond Comic Distributors Inc. website, and are subject to change. The information in the Comics Guide comes not only from Diamond but from solicitations, press releases and previews released by the publishers, except for random comments by Captain Comics (in blue), and occasional comments by The Baron (in this here purplish color). Clicking on most images results in a larger image.
BEST BETS
For more information on Best Bets titles, consult the Guide below. Titles are grouped, in order, under Action Lab Entertainment, Archie Comics, Dark Horse Comics, DC Comics, Dynamite, IDW Publishing, Image Comics, Marvel Comics, Valiant Comics and Other Publishers.
BETTY & VERONICA #272 ($4.99, Archie Comics): Betty & Veronica leave Riverdale -- the rumor mill says it's for a summer in Europe -- and this new storyline will follow not only the girls' adventures away from home, but also how their absence affects Riverdale and the rest of the cast. What recommends this story is that it's written by big-time movie producer (Batman), writer and comics historian Michael Uslan, so it's going to be ambitious.
COPPERHEAD #1 ($3.99, Image Comics): If you're a fan of genre-twisters, you'll enjoy this sci-fi Western by comics veteran Jay Faeber (Dynamo 5).
DAWN/VAMPIRELLA #1 (of 6, $3.99, Dynamite): Fans of "good girl art" shouldn't miss this miniseries, starring two of the most zaftig characters in comics, written and rendered by Dawn creator Joseph Michael Linsner.
EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE #1 (of 5, $3.99, Marvel Comics): This five-issue miniseries introduces (or re-introduces) five Spider-characters from parallel worlds, a few of which we've already met, each written and drawn by a different writer/artist team. It all leads to the Spider-Verse summer crossover, when all the Spider-Men of the multiverse join together in a last stand to battle Morlun, who is successfully wiping them out. This issue should be pretty good, as it stars the character from Spider-Man Noir, who was pretty cool. But to tell you the truth, everyone's really looking forward to the next issue, which introduces a Spider-Man from a parallel world who is really a Spider-Woman ... and her name is Gwen Stacy.
GEORGE ROMERO’S EMPIRE OF THE DEAD: ACT TWO #1 (of 5): The human-vampire-zombie war continues, as written by movie legend George Romero (Night of the Living Dead).
PROMETHEUS: FIRE AND STONE #1 (of 4, $3.99, Dark Horse): A sequel to the Charlize Theron-starring movie, this miniseries follows a search-and-rescue squad investigating the disappearance of Prometheus on LV-223. Dark Horse describes this as a "crossover," but to what? Hint: A variant cover shows a lot of the deadly bug-like creatures from Aliens, a franchise DH also holds.
THE WHEDON THREE WAY ($1.00, Dark Horse): Leaving aside the egregious pun in the title, this book offers reprints of the first issues of three recent titles derived from Joss Whedon TV shows, BUffy the Vampire Slayer Season 10, Angel Season 10 and Serenity: Leaves on the Wind. If you're a big Whedon fan you're probably already following these books, but if you're on the fence here's a great intro -- and a bargain, with 72 pages for a mere dollar!
FUTURE'S END: The cavalcade of New 52 titles crossing over with the weekly Future's End continues, each set five years in the future with an awesome 3-D lenticular cover. This week's offerings are Batgirl, Batman, Birds of Prey, Constantine, Green Lantern Corps, Infinity Man and the Forever People, Justice League United, New Suicide Squad, Superboy and Worlds' Finest.
ROT & RUIN #1 ($3.99, IDW Publications): Jonathan Maberry, author of the "V-Wars" books, adapts his own award-winning "Rot & Ruin" novels to comics. It's similar to The Walking Dead in that it's set after a zombie apocalypse, but whereas TWD is immediately after the fall of civilization, Rot & Ruin is set 15 years later and focuses on the kids of the original survivors.
WILD'S END #1 ($3.99, BOOM!): Dan Abnett, co-creator of the Guardians of the Galaxy you saw at the movies, takes on H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds. The twist is that this Martian invasion takes place in a world exactly like our own, except that everyone is an anthropomorphic animal.

DAWN/VAMPIRELLA #1 (of 6)
Writer/Art/Cover: JOSEPH MICHAEL LINSNER
Teen + / 32 pages / $3.99
Dawn/Vampirella #1 is the historic crossover series being released from Dynamite this September! Not only is this Dawn's FIRST ever crossover, but this series also celebrates the 25th anniversary of Dawn and the 45th anniversary of Vampirella! And as icing on the cake, this series is written and drawn by Dawn creator Joseph Michael Linsner!
In Dawn/Vampirella #1, our story begins when the silver tongued demon Masodik tricks and kidnaps both Dawn and Vampirella. He tells these two "Bad Girls" they are the most beautiful women in all of the worlds. Their demon host demands a "cat fight" to see who is best suited to his purposes, but the ladies suggest something more feminine -- a storytelling contest. Together they take us to the bloody shores of Draculon, to post-apocalyptic New York and to worlds beyond imagination. Only Ravana knows what rewards and punishment await the winner and the loser in this duel of horror hostesses.
"Fans of good comics should love this book because I am giving it 200 percent," says writer/artist Joseph Michael Linsner. "I've been in the game for 25 years, so I've learned a thing or two. I'll be summoning all of my resources together to make this book rock. It's not going to be the ultimate "bad girl" comic, it's going to be a great comic with something in it for everyone."
"What a privilege it is for Joe (Michael Linsner) to work with us on Dawn's first cross-over ever," adds Dynamite CEO / Publisher Nick Barrucci. "To have that cross-over be with a character as iconic as Vampirella, and for Joe to make time in his schedule to both write and draw the series is just an incredible thrill!"

ROT & RUIN #1
Writer: JONATHAN MABERRY
Art: TONY VARGAS
Cover: ALEX RONALD
Subscription Variant: ROBERT SACCHETTO
FC • 32 pages • $3.99
IDW and multiple Bram Stoker award-winning author, Jonathan Maberry bring the untold stories from the zombie post-apocalyptic world of Rot & Ruin to comic books this September.
This all-new series is set in a world 15 years after the dead have risen and vastly outnumber the survivors of the zombie apocalypse. In the aftermath, humanity has found a way to live a marginal existence by forming fenced-in towns where everyone has a job to do in order to survive. As in the award-winning novels, the comic series will center on Benny Imura and his friends as they make their way in a world where the zombies aren’t always the greatest danger.
“The Rot & Ruin isn’t about how many zombies you can kill or how much gore you can sling around the page," said writer Maberry, "These are stories about real kids making hard choices about their lives. It’s about kids learning how to become powerful in a hard and dangerous world. It’s about finding the value of human life and discovering what it means to be alive.”
The ongoing Rot & Ruin comic book series will follow Benny, Nix, Lilah and Chong as they head east in their journey to find what they thought was impossible, a jumbo jet. In their travels they will encounter countless new dangers that will force them to confront what they and others are willing to do in order to bring humanity back to its former glory.
Maberry’s Rot & Ruin bestselling novels have been winning library and school awards all over the country as heartfelt action books that encourage teens to read. The series is now in development for film.
Rot & Ruin will come alive with the help of artist Tony Vargas (Temple Run) and colorist Oliver Lee Acre, with stunning covers by Alex Ronald (Vampire Vixens, Judge Dredd).
• Official new stories set in the hit Rot & Ruin prose novel series!
• Maberry’s hit series V-Wars returns next month!
• Part one of the five part arc Warrior Smart, tying directly into the novels!

COPPERHEAD #1
Story: JAY FAEBER
Art / Cover: SCOTT GODLEWSKI & RON RILEY
32 PAGES / FC / T / $3.50
“Copperhead is the best Image debut of the year and my favorite new comic.” -- Brian K. Vaughan
Writer Jay Faerber (NEAR DEATH, DYNAMO 5) and artist Scott Godlewski (Dracula: The Company of Monsters) team up with colorist Ron Riley (NEAR DEATH, DYNAMO 5) and letterer/designer Thomas Mauer (UNDERTOW, UMBRAL) to bring readers an all-new science fiction Western series this September from Image Comics.
Clara Bronson is a single mother and the new sheriff in Copperhead, a small mining town on a distant planet. But while Clara might seem like an ordinary lady in all respects, she has one or two secrets she’s hiding ... and secrets don’t last long in a small town like Copperhead.
No one’s quite sure where Clara came from or why she took the job as sheriff in the first place. Some suspect she might be on the run from someone, trying to start life anew. Being the sheriff of grimy, dust-laden Copperhead is no one’s idea of dream job -- except for maybe the deputy, who had his sights set on being sheriff long before Clara ever arrived. But Clara Bronson’s not the only strange mystery in Copperhead: there’s more to this little community than meets the eye.
“Scott and I are having the time of our lives bringing this crazy Western/sci-fi mash-up to life,” said Faerber. “Combine Deadwood with Firefly and throw in a whole bunch of aliens, and you've got Copperhead.”
Set in the 24th century and featuring Western archetypes through a sci-fi lens, COPPERHEAD is a fresh new series that readers won’t want to miss out on.

“CONCLAVE,” Part One
For the first time in the 65 years since they divided the world, the 16 Families are gathering again. For Malcolm Carlyle, it is an opportunity to identify and eliminate his enemies. For Jakob Hock, it is an opportunity to exact for revenge. And for Forever Carlyle, it’s the first step in discovering the truth about who she is, and what she is destined to become.
"Greg Rucka! He is the coolest graphic writer. I love him ... Lazarus is sick." -- Michelle Rodriguez, actress
“Lazarus, the dense cyberpunk Mafia world will keep them coming back to the comic racks for weeks to come… Fans of Rucka and Lark’s Gotham Central or Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ Sleeper will enjoy this rich universe.” -- Booklist
Eisner Award-winning writer Greg Rucka and Eisner Award-winning artist Michael Lark return with the eagerly anticipated new story arc of the New York Times bestselling dystopian thriller, LAZARUS. A dark marriage of Divergent and The Godfather, LAZARUS #11 will blow away fans of the series with its next installment of Forever Carlyle’s journey: “Conclave.” This is the perfect entry point for those who haven’t yet started the series that critics can’t stop raving about.
Rucka hinted that the new story arc to the series will kick things up a notch, whereas the first year laid the groundwork for readers and focused on world building and character development. “This is the first time we get to see the majority of the power players in our world all in the same place -- the ruling Families and, in many cases, their Lazari,” said Rucka.
“The Carlyle Family finds itself backed into a corner with the alliance of its enemies, and by the end of the story, the map of the world will be redrawn yet again. For Forever especially, this is a crucial arc -- romance and betrayals will abound, and by its end, she'll be taking the first steps towards her destiny, and that destiny will quite literally shape the world. An avalanche starts with a pebble, and with this arc, the rocks are beginning to roll.”

SPREAD #1 (3RD PTG)
Story: JUSTIN JORDAN
Art / Cover: KYLE STRAHM
32 PAGES / FC / M / $3.50
Ten years ago, we dug too deep. We unleashed something ancient that couldn't be controlled. Something that couldn't be stopped, twisting everything it touched into more of itself.
The Spread.
Humanity was nearly destroyed before we found a way to slow the Spread to a crawl. Now, deep inside the quarantined zone, one man has found the key to stopping it forever: a baby girl. And if he can save her, he might save the world.
Praise for SPREAD:
“A very good case for creepiest apocalypse ever.” -- USA Today
“One read, and I'm infected. Spread gets under your skin in all the right ways. Read this now. Your eyeballs will thank you.” -- Jason Aaron (SOUTHERN BASTARDS, Scalped, Thor God of Thunder, Wolverine & the X-Men)
“A.) A bio-morphic planetary spread B.) An ax swinging survivor named NO and C.) A red stained baby giggle'n in the snow speak'n squiggles ... SOLD! SPREAD, Jordan & Strahm give me nothing but HOPE for the future of horror.” -- Nathan Fox (Dogs of War, Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers, Fluorescent Black)
"... A dude armed with an axe & a baby fighting monsters with eyeballs that try to eat you. I love this comic. Strahm’s art is visceral and kinetic, you’ve never seen dead things drawn so alive.“ -- Nick Pitarra (THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS)
"Kyle Strahm's art is so f***ing gross and awesome I couldn't wait to see what he was about to draw on the next page. I feel like I need to wash ink off my hands after reading this. Good stuff." -- Skottie Young (Rocket Raccoon, Fortunately the Milk, Oz)
"Just when you think you know what kind of creepy-as-Hell story Jordan, Strahm, and Sobreiro are telling, they shift gears and bring you something that elevates SPREAD to epic levels of apocalyptic
horror." -- Cullen Bunn, (The Sixth Gun, Helheim)
"A perfect fusion of everything great about '80s American horror with a Chanbara movie twist and a healthy respect for the fine art of sequential storytelling." -- TIM SEELEY (REVIVAL, HACK/SLASH, Batman Eternal)
"Spread is a really good horror/action movie I get to be on the ground floor for and watch every month. Kyle Strahm's art is the best I've seen from him today. Wispy and and organic. Going from quiet to horribly disgusting in 0 to 60. Really excited to see where this goes." -- Mike Norton (REVIVAL, Battlepug, The Answer)
"Tell me there’s a comic about a baby and her pet badass fighting to survive packs of degenerate cannibals and the world-eating gore virus that made them, you’ve got my interest. Tell me Kyle Strahm is drawing the thing you’ve got my money. Kyle spits nightmares from the tip of his pen and Spread is the book he was born to draw." -- Dennis Hopeless (Avengers Arena, Avengers Undercover, Cable and X-Force)
“SPREAD reminds me of watching horror movies in my parents' basement with a rowdy group of friends, a bag of Cheetos, and a case of beer that we found in the woods.” -- Chris Burnham (NAMELESS, Batman Incorporated, Officer Downe)

IT’S ZOMBIES VS. VAMPIRES VS. AN INVADING MILITIA AS THE LEGENDARY GEORGE ROMERO UNLEASHES THE NEXT CHAPTER IN HIS UNDEAD EPIC!
Zombie Godfather George Romero’s undead epic begins anew in EMPIRE OF THE DEAD: ACT TWO #1! Written by the horror master himself along with acclaimed artist Dalibor Talajic, prepare for an undead onslaught as zombies and vampires wage war on the walled-in streets of New York City! Undead forces are laying waste to the last surviving humans of New York City -- but now outside forces seek entry to the once safe haven. An invading militia seeks to take over the Big Apple. The current residents both alive and dead might have something to say about that!
“They all want what they want, whether it’s right or wrong,” says George Romero of the warring factions in an interview with Marvel.com “So I don’t think you’re going to see a lot of blinking. There’s too much at stake for anyone to give up. Power. Greed. Co-existence. Survival. It’s going to be a fight to the finish.”
“Act Two opens just a short time after the conclusion of Act One, but in that time all of our major players are advancing their interests,” editor Bill Rosemann explained to Marvel.com. “Zombie wrangler Paul Barnum has added fresh performers to his Circus Maximus, the zombies fighting there may be much more capable than even he imagined, Mayor Chandrake continues his seduction of medical scientist Penny Jones, Penny uncovers chilling discoveries about the dual threat to Manhattan’s civilians, the Mayor’s nephew Billy is making his own play for power, and the militia that we saw on the last page of our last issue make a huge discovery that will have everyone watching the skies.”
What’s worse, the roaming flesh-eaters seem to be growing smarter each day! The ruling class of blood-sucking vampires can barely keep their grip on power as they struggle to battle back the hordes of zombies. As the Southern army begins to pillage the greatest city in the world one thing remains clear – when the zombies, vampires and humans go to war, we all lose. Don’t miss the brand new jumping on point as horror master George Romero continues his zombie epic when EMPIRE OF THE DEAD: ACT TWO #1 hits comic shops!
