THIS WEEK'S COMICS

Titles listed in the Comics Guide come from the weekly list at the Diamond Comic Distributors Inc. website, and are subject to change. The information in the Comics Guide comes not only from Diamond but from solicitations, press releases and previews released by the publishers, except for random comments by Captain Comics (in blue), and occasional comments by The Baron (in this here purplish color). BEST BETS

For more information on Best Bets titles, consult the Guide below. Titles are grouped by publisher: Action Lab, Archie, Dark Horse, DC Comics, Dynamite, IDW, Image, Marvel, Valiant and a catch-all Other Publishers.

ALICE COOPER #1 ($3.99, Dynamite): It turns out that when Alice Cooper says "Welcome to my nightmare," he was being literal! This new ongoing series has Al doing a Sandman turn as the master of dreams, which fits his on-stage persona rather well.

THE DEATH-DEFYING DR. MIRAGE #1 (of 5, $4.99, Valiant): Shan Fong, America's foremost paranormal investigator, can contact any dead person's spirit -- except that of her deceased husband, Hwen. This re-imagining of the 1990s Dr. Mirage title is almost a 180-degree turn -- and promises to be fascinating.

DEATH OF WOLVERINE #1 (of 4, $4.99, Marvel): Marvel Comics has been building up to the "death of Wolverine" for months, and now they're finally pulling the trigger (so to speak) with this four-issue, weekly miniseries. It kicks off with this 48-pager, complete with multiple variant covers, including one with metal foil, and comes out weekly through September. Of course, nobody expects Wolverine to stay dead, but as they say, it's the journey, not the (final) destination.

EX-CON #1 ($2.99, Dynamite): Part of Dynamite's effort at giving fan-favorite writers a forum, Ex-Con is a gritty crime drama by Duane Sweirczynski. It stars a modern-day con man in over his head, ands seems to be shooting for a Parker-like vibe.

FUTURE'S END (DC Comics): This month DC ties all its ongoing "New 52" titles into the 11-month, weekly Future's End series due to run until March 2015, with 43 books set five years into a possible future where a time-traveling Batman Beyond is trying to stop the genocide of mankind at the hands of the artificial intelligence Brother Eye. Each of the "Future's End" books comes with a regular cover at $2.99, and a 3-D lenticular cover at $3.99. Check out the DC section for this week's "Future's End" books, which include Action, Aquaman, Batwing, Detective, Earth 2, Grayson, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Swamp Thing and Trinity of Sin: Phantom Stranger.

HAWKEYE VS. DEADPOOL #0 (of 4, $4.99): Despite the title, these two characters will compete for the five issues of this miniseries, not necessarily fight each other. And given that both are given to light-hearted stories, there will probably be lots of yuks.

KICK-ASS 3 (premiere HC, $24.99, Marvel): This hardcover collects the third Kick-Ass series (the one not yet made into a movie) that is apparently the grand finale.

MARVEL FAMOUS FIRSTS: 75TH ANNIVERSARY MASTERWORKS SLIPCASE SET ($500, Marvel): Yes, that is a whopper of a price tag. But it's also a whopper of a set: 11 hardback Marvel Masterworks, consisting of the first volumes of Amazing Spider-Man, Avengers, Captain America, Daredevil, Dr. Strange, Fantastic Four, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and X-Men, plus a complete collection of the 13-issue humor title Not Brand Echhh. Most comics fans own or have read all these stories, but if you haven't, or simply want all these seminal tales in one place, this is a great starting point.

THE MERCENARY SEA VOL 1 ($9.99, Image): Old school adventure, as soldier-of-fortune types look for treasure in the many unexplored parts of the world in 1938 in a captured German U-boat.

THE NAMES #1 ($2.99, DC/Vertigo): A new crime noir title from DC's mature-readers line, Names features a rich, beautiful trophy wife immersing herself in the upper-crusty world of the 1% to find her husband's killers and take revenge.

ORIGINAL SIN #8 (of 8, $4.99): The climax of Marvel's big summer crossover, which revealed hidden secrets of many of Marvel's biggest characters. This issue reveals The Watcher's murderer's end game -- what he's been after, and why.

REVENGE: THE SECRET ORIGIN OF EMILY THORNE (premiere HC, $24.99, Marvel): An original graphic novel reveals some of the back story of the main character in ABC's aptly named revenge drama Revenge.

A CENTAUR'S LIFE VOL 4 (GN)

Publisher: SEVEN SEAS ENTERTAINMENT LLC

Writer/Art/Cover: KEI MURAYAMA

Himeno is a sweet, shy girl, who like many teens her age, struggles with the trials and tribulations of attending high school. The difference is she's a centaur; but she's not alone. In fact, all of her classmates are supernatural creatures, sporting either horns, wings, tails, halos or some other unearthly body appendage. Yet despite their fantastical natures, Himeno and her best friends -- the dragon-winged Nozomi, and Kyoko with her spiraled horns -- are down-to-earth, fun-loving teenagers who grapple with issues of life and love in a mostly normal daily school setting.

Mature/$12.99

I’m still enjoying this series. The beings in it aren’t “supernatural” as such, just divergent human races. The world-building in this series is interesting.

A1 PRESENTS CARPE DIEM VOL 1: I HATE MONDAYS (HC)

Publisher: TITAN COMICS

Writer: W.H. RAUF

Art/Cover: RHOALD MARCELLIUS

They're the colorful assassins with a member for every day of the week -- and they all hate Mondays! From the pages of A1 monthly, a hilariously twisted adventure in the vein of Chew and Tank Girl! Clowns, mad chefs, living video game characters, monstrous super-villains and giant kaiju -- Carpe DIEm has them all!

$19.99

Isn't "giant kaiju" redundant?

Not necessarily.  From my understanding, "kaiju" by itself means something like "creature" or "monster."  To specify a giant monster, one would say "daikaiju" ("great creature" or "giant monster").

Thanks, Baron!

ABOVE THE DREAMLESS DEAD: WWI IN POETRY & COMICS (HC)

Publisher: :01 FIRST SECOND

Writer/Art: Various

As the Great War dragged on and its catastrophic death toll mounted, a new artistic movement found its feet in the United Kingdom. The Trench Poets, as they came to be called, were soldier-poets dispatching their verse from the front lines. Trench Poetry soon became one of the most significant literary moments of its decade. In stark black and white, the words of the Trench Poets find dramatic expression and reinterpretation through the minds and pens of some of the greatest cartoonists working today. Twenty poems are interpreted in comics form by twenty of today's leading cartoonists.

$24.99

Nothing like trench warfare to put you in the mood for a little poetry.

AN AGE OF LICENSE (GN)

Publisher: FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS

Writer/Art/Cover: LUCY KNISLEY

208 pages • Black & white with some color • $19.99

www.fantagraphics.com/anageoflicense

A Travelogue by Lucy Knisley!

An Age of License is acclaimed cartoonist Lucy Knisley's comics travel memoir recounting her charming (and romantic!) adventures in Europe and Scandinavia. It's punctuated by whimsical visual devices, cute cats she meets along the way and drawings and descriptions of food that will make your mouth water. Knisley's experiences are also colored by anxieties about traveling alone and about her life and career-subjects that many young adults will relate to.

New York Times Best Selling cartoonist Knisley garnered fame from her two previous graphic novels Relish and French Milk. She is also well known for her ongoing web comic, "Stop Paying Attention," the latest of which is "A Light That Never Goes Out." Knisley's greatest strength lays in her keen ability to tell her story to both young adult and mature readers.

"I'm really excited to finally be working with Fantagraphics, which I've admired for years," Knisley explains. "These books are an exploration of youth and freedom, versus responsibility and family, and I'm so glad Fantagraphics is the company to help me tell these stories."

Much like the HBO series Girls, Knisley speaks to a generation of young women who are fiercely independent and yearn for adventure. The Eat, Pray, Love for the "social media" generation, An Age of License is a series of illustrated snapshots of a life full of cute cats, fancy food and exotic travel.

Looks a bit like Tintin, doesn't she?

DISNEY ROSA DUCK LIBRARY VOL 1: SCROOGE SON OF SUN (HC)

Publisher: FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS

Writer/Art/Cover: DON ROSA

We're proud to present our first complete, chronological book of Duck adventures by contemporary fan favorite Don Rosa. Famed for his prize-winning "Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck," Rosa wrote and drew a whopping two decades' worth of ripping Scrooge and Donald yarns! Presented with sparkling color and "extras," these Duckburg epics are getting a definitive North American edition for the very first time - at a price even Scrooge would consider a bargain!

$29.99

My LCS guy was surprised when I told him several months ago that I wasn't interested in this, because I'm not a big fan of Don Rosa's duck work. But, alas, it's true.

The humor in Rosa books seems forced to me, whereas Barks' humor had an easy grace. And the art seems fussy and over-rendered, whereas Barks' artwork used the minimum of lines for maximum effect. Plus, Rosa puts a lot of effort creating a streamlined chronology for the ducks, which may satisfy continuity fans, but I find a distraction and an impediment to being, you know, entertained.

It may seem unfair to compare anybody to Barks, but it can't be helped if you're writing and drawing the books he made famous.

I don't follow this series, so I can only guess what's happening on most of these covers -- which is kind of a game in itself. My guess here for the wraparound cover is that some vampires discovered one of their victims wasn't going to go quietly. Subtitle: "Oh, snap!"

After Leela saves Zapp Brannigan and his barely covered backside from the gravitational pull of a black hole, she is made captain of the Nimbus, leaving Zapp to fill another void as the new pilot at Planet Express.

Is it my imagination, or is Leela dressed like Russ Manning's Magnus, Robot Fighter?

What she's wearing is the standard DOOP ("Democratic Order Of Planets") military uniform, though it looks better on her than it usually does on Zapp.  Of course, that could be based on Manning's character.

That's what I get for not watching Futurama religiously. Thanks again, Baron!

THE WOODS VOL 1 (TPB)

Publisher: BOOM! STUDIOS

Writer: JAMES TYNION IV

WHY WE LOVE IT: As fans of James Tynion IV's work in the Batman universe (BATMAN ETERNAL, RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS), we were eager to publish his first original comic series. THE WOODS gives us that same eerie, smalltown horror feel we get whenever we read a Stephen King novel.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT: On October 16, 2013, 437 students, 52 teachers, and 24 additional staff from Bay Point Preparatory High School in suburban Milwaukee, WI vanished without a trace. Countless light years away, far outside the bounds of the charted universe, 513 people find themselves in the middle of an ancient, primordial wilderness. Where are they? Why are they there? The answers will prove stranger than anyone could possibly imagine. Collects issues #14 of the critically acclaimed series.

This version of J'onn J'onzz is also no longer part of continuity, either, but I can't remember if these are good stories or not. Since I can't remember, probably not.

I'm going to disagree with you here, Cap.  I loved the Ostrander/Mandrake Martian Manhunter series.  It's one of the few (only?) times he's worked as a solo star.  They have fun playing with his multiple secret identities and in this volume, they bring back J'emm, Son of Saturn.  It's good, clean superhero fun!

All I remember about J'emm is that his miniseries read like it was supposed to be a J'onn J'onzz story, but they decided at the last minute to color him red!

Anyway, if you say these are good stories, that's good enough for me!

I'd have to agree with Chris too.  Wonderfully well-thought through comics.  The stories covered J'onn's epic alien lifespan from Martian statesman, thorugh JLA member through to the spirit of Mars in the year 853,000, but they all circled aorund very Ostrander questions of identity and role-playing, disguise and self-deception.

Very intelligent comics that fitted beautifully into the then-current DCU status quo.  I reread them recently with an eye to a column, but they were very good.  That was a mini-Golden Age in the DCU as far as I'm concerned.

Also this run happens to contain one of my all time favourite comics, (of all time!)

LEGENDARY STAR LORD #3
ORIGINAL SIN #8 (OF 8)
PUNISHER #10
ROCKET RACCOON #3
SOUTHERN BASTARDS #4 (MR)

Terminator: Enemy of my Enemy #5
I've always felt that Dark Horse has done a great job with the Terminator, AvP, Aliens and Predator franchise stories, probably since I've been collecting them since the FIRST came out years & years ago, when DHC was just breaking into the 'Big' Time (back then, Marvel & DC were considered the 'Big Two', with Image gaining serious ground and DHC hot on their heels).

Batman '66 Meets The Green Hornet #4. A must for all fans.

TMNT Ongoing #38.

Fairest #29

Hinterkind #11 - This has gotten really good the pass few issues. Seeing a couple of different plot threads moving forward.

Ex-Con #1

Nailbiter #5

Sidekick #8

Southern Bastards #4

An Age of License is something I would like to pick up at a later date. I rather enjoyed her Relish comic.

I'm not interested in Crossed Badlands either, Cap. It has lasted 60 issues which is really good in today's market.

We'll have to agree to disagree here on Rosa. I like his Duck work. I might be slightly biased though, I met him a con three years ago, and he was just about the sweetest guy ever.

Man, I loved Hagar the Horrible when I was growing up, I will have to put that collection on my wish list.

OK, I'll buy bacteria, although I think it would fall under The Red. But metal isn't alive! How does it get an avatar?

I think Colossus and Warblade would disagree...

Fascinating points, Alex. And it explains, in a way, why I reacted poorly to Glenn's death. My initial reaction was that I felt like I was seeing the little man behind the curtain -- your math, I guess-- in that Negan basically explained that someone important in the main cast had to die because nobody important in the main cast had died lately. That makes perfect sense as an author's note to himself, but as dialogue coming from the mouth of a character in story, it jarred me right out of the story. Why would "Negan" say a thing like that? How would he know enough to say a thing like that? Obviously, "Negan' wasn't saying it, Kirkman was -- the omniscient narrator, not a character in the narrative.

It seemed like a horrific, amateurish writing error to me. And it has, essentially, popped my suspension of disbelief like a cheap balloon. I'm having a hard time getting back into the book, and am essentially waiting for the Negan storyline to be over so that I can try to enjoy it again.

Is that an aspect of what you're saying?

I have never read this series in a normal way -- I have always seen as a mathematical text for fiction-writing because the one thing this series does like no other fictional offering is focus on cannon fodder (who are led by a tragic hero in a dystopia, but that is another discussion). You know nothing about the previous lives of the characters, and you don't even know who they really are -- yes, we see how they behave under their new norm, but it is *not* a new normal.(Contrast that to Afterlife with Archie, where we all all the characters thoroughly, but now our gang of heroes from paradise have become a gang of cannon fodder -- the only variable that is still undetermined is whether this Archie is also a tragic hero or not). I think the earlier issues should be required reading in any creative writing class.

The Walking Dead formula worked really, really well for a long time because there was no deviation from the formula -- protagonist meets up with a group of people and most of them will not be coming out of the story arc alive because they are zombie food. It is akin to having a story about the lobsters in a tank at a seafood restaurant. You don't get too attached to the characters and from a safe distance, you see plenty of action from the world of tragedy.

To me, the first significant deviation (and the one that counts) is the death of Glenn because he and Maggie rebelled against their cannon fodder status together. Against all odds, they found *normal* and they became something else -- something that would have best been served in a spin-off series rather than giving Glenn a death he did not deserve. They were a different set of equations that grew too big for the set they were confined in. Individually, they seemed just like the other characters, but together, they proved to be something else. If you aren't going to expand your line as an author, then Glenn had to die, but a nifty opportunity was lost in all this and I am sorry it was.

THE WALKING DEAD BOOK 10 (HC)

Story: ROBERT KIRKMAN

Art / Cover: CHARLIE ADLARD & CLIFF RATHBURN

296 PAGES / BW / M / $34.99

Rick’s treaty with Negan and the Saviors is pushed to the limit, as both sides march toward ALL OUT WAR.

Wait, this doesn't wrap up "All Out War"? Dang! Honestly, I have not enjoyed this storyline, in a book where I've enjoyed every storyline until now.

*Sigh.* Maybe after Book 11 I'll start enjoying this title again.

What pulled me out was the fact that the 'hero' of the piece keeps personally inflicting serious injury and death on Negan and his men, only to have Negan repeatedly 'see the funny side' and only kill someone close to the hero rather than the hero himself, who has proven a serious threat to Negan's life, standing and privileges.

That doesn't make any sense to me.  EIther this world works by gun-toting survivalist principles or it doesn't.

In any case the result was the same as with yourself, Cap, as it showed us Kirkman calculating that the survival of his main character in his long-running series was more important than any internal story logic.  The little man behind the curtain, indeed.
