Covers That Stuck With You

What covers grabbed your attention when you were growing up? I've been looking at the cover of 2000 AD #4 (1977). It caught my imagination when I was a kid and I still think the situation idea a strong, dramatic one. The image doesn't fully live up to it, but I doubt DC would have done better. Marvel, maybe. According to the GCD the art was by Carlos Ezquerra, who designed Judge Dredd and drew many of his early stories.

This was the first issue of the title with a cover picture that wasn't squeezed by a free gift image. When I first saw it I must have been eight. It's interesting that I understood the concept at that age. Although I never forgot the cover, I didn't get to read the title until #10.

"Dan Dare" was a longtime feature from Eagle about a spaceman of the far future that was revived in a new style for 2000 AD. In its heyday Eagle had been very popular, and for a long time "Dan Dare" was its cover-feature, the stories starting on the front cover. The revived series was initially drawn by Massimo Belardenelli. Dave Gibbons worked on it later.

"M.A.C.H. 1" was about a guy who had Six Million Dollar Man-like strength and speed, although he was not bionic. He also had a computer in his head that gave him constant advice, rather like Deathlok. "Flesh" was about dinosaurs turning the tables on time travellers who harvested them for meat.

  • Here's a couple:

1936650811?profile=originalI think this was likely the first time a cover really and truly grabbed me. I wasn't a huge fan of either Superman or Batgirl, but I really needed to see how they got out of this dilemma.

1936652434?profile=originalI don't think I've actually ever read this story or seen this comic, but I remember seeing it depicted in some of the 100 Page Super Spectaculars and it really grabbed me.

  • These two were biggies for me.

Batman and Robin in a line up! What th-!  A really fine piece of art by Carmine Infantino, inked by Joe Giella according to GCD although to me it looks more like Murphy Anderson inks.

My cousin gave me his copy of Spider-Man #29 even though I wasn't into Marvel Comics at the time. I was knocked out by that cover although I wasn't quite sure what to make of the story, dialogue or art behind it.

  • 1936659341?profile=originalWhen I saw this, I HAD to have it!

  • 1936656925?profile=originalAs a kid, I heard about the (in)famous Adult Legion but I never thought that I would ever read it  I considered this book pretty special.

  • My very first Green Lantern. The wash technique was amazing.

  • My fourth Flash, but the first truly exciting cover.

  • My first Avengers. I had seen Sub-Mariner before in the FF but I think this was my first Hulk experience.

  • Not my first of either by a long shot, but two very striking covers.

  • I really liked the Detective cover too. I believe it was the second issue of the New Look, and the crooks looked very menacing. The Spider-Man/Scorpion cover is also one of my favorites. As someone else said, Ditko was good with water.

  • 1936647941?profile=originalI know I read this comic, but I don't remember much about it. All I know is that when I saw it on the stands, I had to know what was inside this crazy-looking story.

This one caught my eye this was the moment I fell in love with Norm Breyfogle's art. It was the first time I'd seen it, and I was hooked right away. I love the quasi-abstract way he always drew Batman's cape.

I have never read this comic. I want to, though. I know when I saw it I thought, "What the HECK!?"
