Dark Knight III

As I said before in another thread, I bought Dark Knight III yesterday. I loved it.

I won't spoil anything yet, just in case anyone else actually wants to read this. However, I will say that this is the best artwork I have ever seen from Andy Kubert. I hate it when a writer is hyping a book and says that the artist is "honestly turning in the best work of his or her career", because it's virtually never true. In this case, I really think it is.

And Azzarello turns in his Azzarello-y best on the writing. I haven't read any Frank Miller in the last decade since DK2, save one re-reading of DK2, but I really enjoyed all of this issue.

  • I'm waiting to hear what people have to say about it. I may pick up the trade if I hear enough good about it.

  • Does it feel like the last one in a trilogy?  Miller is saying that he is working on the 4th book that'll have more input from him than just his name on the cover.

But DC seem to be selling this as the last book?

  • Honestly, so far, it doesn't seem like the final part of a trilogy. It just feels like a really good Batman book. Life is short, so that's all I'm looking for right now.

  • My first thought is that this is better than DK2 but not nearly as good as DC seems to think it is. It looks like the story will center around the Batman/Superman/Wonder Woman trinity which is OK by me.  I liked the fact that the daughter of Superman and Wonder Woman is being featured.  Also, I thought Kubert did a nice job of aping the old Frank Miller style.

I actually enjoyed the Atom backup a little more than main story but I'm not crazy about Miller's current style which is just bizarre.

  • Miller's current style almost reminds me more of his earliest work than anything else.

  • I have to say that Miller's drawings of the lizard that the Atom was riding on seemed straight out of the Silver Age. And I don't mean that in terms of creativity; I mean that in terms of quality. Sorry to say it.

I really did love the Wonder Woman vs. Minotaur scenes, though. I just really liked everything that Andy Kubert drew.
