Reading the Shadow mini I saw this ad and remembered it from way back when:

Like I said I remember the ad, but I never read them, I never even saw them, and I don't know anyone who did. Did anyone here read these? If so, were they any good? How faithful were they to the source material? I still don't recall seeing any of these at a show or anything like that. Not that I was looking...

  • I wish I could speak to this, but all I've ever seen of those was that very same ad.
  • I've never run across these, either. Apparently there were seven of them.
  • I feel like I've read at least one of these -- probably Frost and Fire -- but for the life of me, I don't remember it.
  • I owned a copy of Demon With A Glas sHand - it was an incredibly good adaptation, and I remember at the time Harlan Ellison being very very happy with it.
  • I gave them a pass when they first came out but later had the opportunity to buy them all for a quarter apiece. I did buy them, but I still haven't read them. I seem to recall Chris mentioning on the old board that he read the adaptation of George R.R. Martin's Sandkings.
  • I just read Nightwings about a month ago, for example, and it was OK. I also own The Magic Goes Away. These are not stories that are typical of comic books of the time, as there are no exaggerated fight scenes or super-obvious plots. They are more sophisticated than then-modern comics, but they clearly needed more space to properly tell their stories.
I had read the relatively short novel of The Magic Goes Away before the GN, and found the GN quite lacking.
However, the art for both was quite nice and have a European-comic flair.
  • I think I had three of these; Demon with a glass hand, Nightwings and Hell on Earth. Demon with a glass hand was the best of the bunch. The others were 'meh' because I don't even remember them.

Not quite. I knew of it, and suggested some of our George RR Martin fans should check it out while they were waiting for delayed issues of Wild Cards, but I've never read it myself. The original novella, however, is very, very good.
  • I misremembered. My mind is like a steel trap sieve. I know I read the novella (in OMNI magazine, IIRC) and now that I’m thinking of it, I think I did maybe read that one of the seven I bought because I remember thinking the novella was better. As LJ pointed out, it needed more room to develop properly.
  • I have Sandkings and it was really good. I'll have to check out my shelf at home and see if I have any others. I don't remember having others, but you never know...

Check out the Secret Headquarters (my store) website! It's a pretty lame website, but I did it myself, so tough noogies

Listen to WOXY.com, it's the future of rock-n-roll!
