DCnU Justice League

Is it valid to criticize a modern comic book for being a modern comics book? If so, that’s what I find wrong with this one. It’s not really a first issue; assuming they’re going to drag the origin story out for six issues, it’s more like a “number negative four.” Victor Stone appears (pre-Cyborg) and Superman shows up on the last page, but other than that, it’s more of a Batman/Green Lantern team-up book. Aquaman, Flash and Wonder Woman don’t show up at all.

And Cyborg? As a founding/charter member of the JLA? I’m just not seeing it. Plus Jim Lee has designed some truly clunky new armor for him to wear.

Speaking of Jim Lee, I had long since assumed the reason that All-Star Batman was never completed was due to Lee’s duties as co-EiC, but if he’s got time for this the fault must lie with Frank Miller. I’m possibly the only person on the board who actually likes All-Star Batman (and Robin the Boy Wonder), but I’d like to see it completed. Hell, it may even become the definitive origin for the “New 52.”

  • If All-Star Batman becomes the definitive origin for Batman in the new DCU, I will close my store. Never before have I read anything that showed such a genuine hatred of super-hero comics and their fans than that piece of garbage.

  • Yeah, I'm with Dags regarding my hatred of Miller's All-Star Batman.  It's just so adolescent.

As a child of Super Friends - Galactic Guardians...I love Vic as a founding JL member.

  • As soon as I saw Cyborg on the cover, I figured someone involved must have been a fan of the last season of the Hanna-Barbera cartoons in the 80's-- SUPER POWERS: GALACTIC GUARDIANS, when Cyborg was a member of the (ahem) "Super Powers Team" (formerly The Super-Friends!!).
  • Yeah, I've got no beef with Vic being on the big team - by me, he fits better than any version of Firestorm ever did.
  • But are Wolfman and Perez's New Teen Titans erased now? Will they all have to get new origins and backstories?

    Mine aren't. (I just checked.)
  • LOL! But seriously, did they happen in the DCnU? Or is Cyborg's origin now linked with the Justice League?
  • It certainly looks like Cyborg's origin will be tied to the League now. Whether this precludes his participation in the Titans is still an open question.
  • Who knows what they'll do? But I can certainly see reasons why a young member of the Justice League might want to devote some of his time to hanging out with superheroes his own age. It doesn't necessarily have to be either/or... especially since they're not actually telling stories with that team -- if it existed, it was sometime in the past -- so they don't have to worry about dovetailing ongoing continuities.
  • Seriously, I don’t see how the New Teen Titans can exist as we knew them. For one thing, the origin of the Justice League is now set a mere five years in the past, and unless they operated as solo heroes for quite some time before coming together (maybe they did, but I don’t get that impression), there’s hardly time for the original sidekicks to have operated as sidekicks before striking out on their own. The history of the Titans (not to mention the entire DCU) is fluid even without a major “event” such as Flashpoint. Remember John Byrne’s short-lived Doom Patrol series from a couple of years ago? The decision was made to introduce the team as if they had never been seen before (thus rendering Wolfman & Perez’s “Search for the Doom Patrol” out of continuity and calling much Changeling’s origin into question). In the DCnU, all bets are off. For all we know, the current members of the Teen titans are the founding members. I wouldn’t take anything for granted as being in continuity until/unless it is specifically cited going forward.
