From TV Line: "Emily Bett Rickards Leaving Arrow: EPs 'Heartbroken' Over Her Decision to Exit"

I don't get it. She was initially hired for a one-episode walk-on role, and became the show's leading lady. And they're winding down anyway, with only 10 episodes next season. Why walk now?

  • I wondered the same thing.

  • The future children have been referring to her death, so I'm not too surprised. Maybe she has some opportunities she wants to pursue. Most actors don't want to be typecast. Telegraphing the death of her character probably means she told them she wanted to leave.

On NCIS, a lot of people didn't want Cote de Pablo to leave her role as Ziva David. Some were suggesting a spinoff for her character. Some fans don't seem to understand that actors aren't their characters (and don't want to become their characters) and have their own lives and considerations.

  • I get that. What I don't get is leaving now when this season is more than half over and next season is short. It's like dropping out at mile 23 of a 25-mile marathon.

  • Could be money; her contract was up and the producers aren't making it worth her while to continue. It could also simply be time; her contract was up and she had a project lined up that she really wanted to do, and would have to turn down if she were to continue for another half season. I can easily imagine her getting offers right now that she'd be worried wouldn't be there next year, or a special project that if she didn't take it, she'd know she'd regret it.

Just looking over her IMDB page, there's been precious little she's done outside of the DCU since she started working on Arrow. I can totally see how she'd want the time and freedom to stretch her wings, and once the end was in sight, making peace with that. And then, once the 10-episode extension happened, saying, "No, that's not gonna work for me."

  • I found this narrative on the IMDB page for Pierre Brosnan, an illustration of being locked into a TV show and losing a major opportunity:

"Brosnan was chosen to play 007 in 1986 and was given the script to The Living Daylights (1987). Although he was contracted to Remington Steele (1982) for seven seasons, NBC decided to cancel the show at the end of the fourth season, which meant that Brosnan was free to play "James Bond" in The Living Daylights (1987) the following year. However, shortly after the end of the fourth season, NBC had second thoughts about canceling "Remington Steele" and, subsequently, approached the Bond producers, directly, in an attempt to strike a deal that would allow Brosnan to play both "James Bond" and "Remington Steele" the following year. NBC also offered to completely reschedule the shooting of "Remington Steele" to ensure that there were no scheduling conflicts. But eventually, Albert R. Broccoli famously told NBC that "James Bond will not be Remington Steele and Remington Steele will not be James Bond". Accordingly, Brosnan would only play Bond if the show remained canceled. NBC had a 60-day deadline to revoke their decision to cancel the "Remington Steele" series and, at 6:30 pm on the 60th day of the deadline, Brosnan learned that NBC decided to make a fifth season. So, the role of the new James Bond went back to Timothy Dalton. NBC went on to make only six episodes of the fifth season of "Remington Steele" before finally canceling the show for good."

Brosnan finally got to play James Bond. Nine years later!

  • I hope we don't get the tearful goodbye video from dead Felicity, but I suspect it's inevitable.

  • Are you guys caught up? A tearful death video seems unlikely, given recent events.
  • Assuming the timeline isn't altered again, looks like she's got at least another 20 years. (And she ages really well, too!)
  • I still have to watch the latest two episodes.

  • I'm way behind (my wife has kinda soured on it). We'll probably catch up when it's summertime, and there's little else to watch.
