On FCBD my journey to the " other " comics shop for me here (Other Comics Shop - OCS ?) caused me to see displayed , buying same , a GARFIELD comic book from Kaboom! (Which seems to be the name now for what called itself...Boom! Kids before??)
It contains new , comic-book format , Garfield stories , 12 and 10 pages , two all told , written by Mark Evanier and drawn by Gary Barker , the main " ghost " penciler on the daily strip the last I heard . (The cover is signed " Jim Davis " of course .)
The cover , in displaying the G-Land cast of characters , (There is apparently an alternate cover actually by Davis showing " Garfield's first appearance" . ) shows a " girlfriend " for Garfield , who(m) I think I have seen before , and a cat friend and a mouse friend , who(m??) I suppose I may have seen before .
Obviously , an alternate version would tend to introduce additional characters , specially a " longer stories " comic book , and I only see the daily strip , in general .

Mark Evanier has been talking about the Garfield comics for awhile. Given his bona fides and the artist, it seemed like a good adaptation. I decided to see what people thought of it and then buy the inevitable TPB if it was good, which I probably should have done with the Peanuts mini-series, but I didn't realize it was a mini-series for a few issues. (Speaking of which, I hear the Popeye four-issue mini-series is now an ongoing title, and it looks pretty good).
All those characters you mention have appeared in the strip, although maybe not for a long while (I haven't seen it in many years, and I don't watch the TV shows, where they may show up more often). But I remember them from when I read it. Wikipedia lists a lot of potential characters: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Garfield_series_characters
...Thank you for the info , MSA . Does Comics.Org have the alternate Davis cover - and the alternate Bud Sagendorf " Dell-style " cover for the Popeye new CB , which I believe is definitely a promo/" special " people-only one , so erhaps not listed by Comics.Org ?
The GCD doesn't have the covers posted yet, as it's probably too soon. But here's a link to the first alternative: http://www.comicsalliance.com/2012/02/14/garfield-1-variant-covers-.... That's the first drawing of Garfield, which shows up on occasion places.
I saw the second one in PREVIEWS, and it's red with one of the first drawings of Jon.
I hadn't heard about the Sagendorf cover for Popeye. Frankly, I prefer the Action #1 homage version, which is the one I got. http://blog.newsok.com/nerdage/2012/04/27/popeye-returns-to-comics-...

...The first story starts w/a fantasy superhero sequence which is presented in this " retro " " dots " style - Is the term for this old style of " dots printing " " tempera " ? - anyway , a " pop art " style sequence .
I had wanted to expound about that sort of thing in modern day comics in general , but I wanted to kick this line up...:-)...
Pointillism? Or do you mean the printing system? Tempera was a type of paint used before oil paint.
...I bought what may have been my first ish since then , #30 .
Nice to know they've kept w/continuous numbering !!!!!!!!!!!
Apparent " series artist " Andy Hirsch drew , M.E. wrtote , the lead/cover story , which gets an EC-tributing cover .
Another artist/writer team does the 2nd story in a more , um , ~ " modern " ? " computer-y , and sort of ' retro-Fifties ' " - which is more " modern " than traditional Garfield lines-on-paper drawin' ~ style , and I wonder if a chubby male character is a " tribute "/mild zing at Mark E. ?
Several pages don't have " comic book stories " per se , but puzzles/stuff and newspaper strip reprints .
...That second story was odd , as it was a story of a modern young female going to a cosplay show as Garfield (at least one other attendee is in a Garverse costume as well) , in a " normal " world , with no anthomorphic cats...........
