I gather those costumed types can be a real hassle for people. They've never bothered me personally, but they can be very abusive, trying to extort money from people.
Years ago there was a guy that performed stunts like climbing buildings, wearing a Spider-Man suit to call attention to himself. Marvel must not have appreciated the free publicity since I believe they sued him.
I got my picture taken with a guy dressed like Spider-Man when I was a kid. Seemed like an okay guy, but even at a young age I knew it was wrong for him to tell people taking pictures of him that he was Peter Parker. Ruined the fantasy.

I can understand why Marvel didn't want the "free" publicity. If someone uses your characters without your permission, they may use it in ways you don't want and can't control. ...

Plus, if the guy plummets to his doom while dressed as Spider-Man- or even worse, some kid plummets to their doom whilst imitating him - it's bad publicity for Marvel even though it's not their fault.
