Herb Trimpe

We've lost another giant of the Silver Age, Herb Trimpe. Here's Mark Evanier's obituary, which makes it official.

As best as I can figure, his first work for Marvel was on the one-shot Phantom Eagle story in Marvel Super-Heroes, and then on to inking and then drawing The Incredible Hulk and nearly everything else over his many years at Marvel. I have a particular fondness for his 24 issues of Godzilla.

I met him once at a Mid-Ohio Con several years ago and was able to thank him for his many years and issues of enjoyment he had brought to me and my children. He was so nice and such a gentleman.

  • When I saw this topic on the main page I was afraid it was going to be an obituary. My first favorite comic was The Incredible Hulk, and I still think Herb Trimpe is THE definitive Hulk artist. I'm very sad to learn of his passing.

  • I found two other good write-ups regarding his life and work.

Also, this article from 2000 that is linked within Mark Evanier's article relates in detail what Trimpe went through during the Marvel meltdown in the late 90s. If you haven't read it you should.

  • I was at the last show he was at this weekend, Eat Coast Comicon, but I didn't see him when I passed by his table. But a few years ago, he was a featured guest and I saw him on a spotlight panel, and he was absolutely terrific. As a DC kid, I didn't see a lot of his art growing up, but the engaging stories he told about how books like Transformers and Godzilla were made made it a great afternoon for a bystander like me.

  • Elsewhere on this board I saw that IDW is going to release a Herb Tripme "Artist's Edition" of Hulk stories. I hope he knew that was in the works before he passed. MMW Editor Cory Sedlemeyer had him write a few introductions to recent volumes. That was nice.
