One of the seminal moments in television history was the debut, and quick demise, of You're In the Picture, a game show hosted by Jackie Gleason that is most famous for two things: One, it was canceled after its first episode, and, two, for the second episode, Gleason spent the entire time on air apologizing for how bad the debut episode was.

I've always heard about this, but I've never seen it. Fortunately, TV writer Ken Levine has posted a clip on his website, and it is a wonder to behold. Look here and enjoy.

  • I can't watch this at work, but I'm looking forward to watching it at home. As you say, this is an infamous bit of TV history. Thanks!
  • That was *great.*
  • You know, Gleason came across as being so charming and affable and witty that I could have watched him just sit around and puff on cigarettes and shoot the breeze every week.

    "Man, that's good coffee!"

Absolutely. His facial expressions are just priceless: huge, and as expressive as anything he says.
