The Toronto Star is reporting that next spring, Justice League America will be renamed Justice League Canada, as the team restructures and relocates. Jeff Lemire,

a Toronto native, will continue to write it, and it will be drawn by Mike McKone.

The team will be joined by a new Canadian teen hero, as well as Adam Strange, who in the new 52 is now Canadian.

Thoughts?

Personally, if this is a signal that Amanda Waller's time with the team is limited, I'm all for it. She's great with the Suicide Squad, but I really hate having any JLA (or JLC) members answering to her.

  • Pre-Nu52, Amanda's appeal was that she was extremely pragmatic.  You didn't always agree with the choices she made, but you understood them.  Sometimes you hated her, sometimes you loved her, but you always had a good idea of where she was coming from.

The current Amanda Waller?  Pretty much a super-villain and extremely unappealing.  She's at the point where you don't understand how she can function within the government even within a shadow position.  There's no balance, at least none that I've seen.

  • Adam Strange mildly piques my interest. For me I will be waiting as the story develops. I haven't read a Justice League series regularly in years. If it remains a $4 comic then more than likely not.

  • I agree, Randy. I remember years ago having a long, rollicking argument with Mark O. about Waller -- he saw her as a villain, and I saw her as a neutral/pragmatist/patriot. And it really boiled down to when we first encountered the character: I was with her from the beginning, while Mark met her much further along in her career (when rather than being a Suicide Squad protagonist, she was a JLA antagonist). And it really colored the way we both considered her.

But at this point, I've got to concede. In the New 52, I haven't seen anything remotely human about her.* Sometimes her missions serve the greater good, but I'm convinced she puts herself and her career ahead of national security and the American people.

*(I haven't read all of her appearances, I should note. Just her run in JLA and the Ales Kot-written issues of Suicide Squad... and issue 1, as well, I think.)

  • Will DC stop trying to get me to buy their comics again? Seriously DC, I'm not coming back. Anyway it looks like they're going to set up shop in Toronto. And nobody in Canada outside of Toronto has anything good to say about Toronto.

  • The Waller in Team 7, wasn't some underhanded manipulator. There were many things wrong with that series, but she wasn't one of them.

  • Really, Trav? Hm, that's interesting. Maybe if I see those books in a cheapie bin -- less than a dollar* -- I'll pick them up.

*(I just went to a comic show that absolutely spoiled me -- comics were a buck each up to the first 20, 50 cents each from 20 to 60, and then every book after that was a quarter. And MAN, what I'll buy for a quarter! Anyway, I expect failed New52 series to start filling that shows boxes soon.)

  • Okay, my first thought was "Adam Strange Brew".

  • Dude, you just won Canada.

  • I've always wanted a Canada of my own.

And really, doesn't Adam Strange Brew sound like a delicious beer made for the likes of you, Jason, and me? Then we could discuss it here?

  • My friends brew their own beer -- though usually only once a year. But I'll definitely suggest the label to them, for whenever it's appropriate.
