For a while now, I’ve been posting reactions to big “meaty” arcs such as The Eighth Doctor Adventures, Dark Eyes, Doom Coalition and The Collected War Doctor. Some of the stories I plan to listen to in the near future, though, are either one-off adventures or three story arcs. I thought it would be easier on the indexer (Hi, Bob!) if I started one “catch-all” thread and maintain the index in the initial post myself. I invite others to contribute to this discussion as well, and it doesn’t have to be strictly Doctor Who, either; anything from Big Finish will qualify. I’m going to start in a couple of days) with…

“I like the idea of the Doctor having an occasional Not-A-Pretty-Young-Thing companion.”

Agreed.

“It was amusing hearing a pre-Doctor David Tennant chewing the scenery as Daft Jamie.”

A pre-Doctor Tennant was also featured in several stories in the “Gallifrey” range. Big Finish provided Tennant with steady work before he hit it big, and he remains grateful and willing to participate in Tenth Doctor audios.

“It felt like they were setting up "Knox" for a return. Did he ever show up again?”

Not that I know of.

It has been a long time since I last visited the Big Finish web-site (and I probably shouldn't have visited today). One thing I learned it that it behooves one to "bundle" releases together (because there is a $20 "per order" charge). Consequently, I wait until various future releases have been solicited, then I put them all in one order. I had an order, spaced out over many months, which reached years into the future. Then I found a ton of old audios at Half Price Books. Because I had so many built up, I haven't been to to web-site in a while, nor have I received any new orders with a new Vortex magazine. Currently, there are only two items (which I ordered months ago) yet to ship: Eighth Doctor: Time War 4 (July 2020) and Gallifrey: Time War 4 (February 2021). Because I haven't been listening as often (first because my daily commute was shortened, then eliminated, due to COVID). i have been unaware of new releases. I think I may be able to listen at the rate of one per week, though, during my weekly trip to me LCS 9even if I don't buy anything).

Here are some things that interest me (some I've mentioned, some already released):

Susan's War - APR 2020

Stranded (Eighth Doctor Adverntures) beginning JUL 2020

Missy - Series 2 - JUL 2020

Out of Time (Fourth Doctor & Tenth Doctor, Baker & Tennant) - AUG 2020

Tenth Doctor & River Song - NOV 2020

Masterful (featuring all the Masters) - JAN 2021

JUBILEE: "Jubilee" is the basis for the TV episode "Dalek"... or, rather, "Dalek" is loosely based on "Jubilee." The stories share a single common element: a lone Dalek has been captured and is being held against its will and tortured. Other than that, the settings are entirely different. As "Jubilee" opens, the TARDIS, impossibly, is trying to land in two places ant once. The Sixth Doctor and Evelyn find themselves in an alternate version of England in the year 2003, but the TARDIS is nowhere to be found. England is about to celebrate the 100th anniversary jubilee of the defeat of the Daleks, who invaded in 1903 and were defeated with the help of the Doctor.

Everything the Doctor and Evelyn learn about the 1903 invasion has been highly romanticized, plus they have no memory of it. The Doctor deduces, not only that the TARDIS materialized in 1903, but that alternate versions of himself and Evelyn are still on it. Over the last 100 years, the entire society has been built up around the (highly fictionalized) defeat of the Daleks. Originally, two Daleks were captured, but one was put to death during the 50th anniversary jubilee celebration. the remaining Dalek is set to be executed for the 100th. Also, there is a rumor of a being in a wheelchair, said to be their creator, locked in the tower room.

When Evelyn makes her was to the tower room to confront this being, it's not who we might expect: it is the Doctor! He has been there for 100 years, and his legs have been cut off in order to prevent him trying to escape. Originally he had been confined with Evelyn, but she died many years ago. There are many twists and turns regarding this society and how it came to be, all of which would be meaningless for me to describe out of context. Suffice it to say that "Dalek" is a very good television episode, and "Jubilee" is a very good audio episode.

Interesting.

No question. Tracy in particular will be interested in these sets. she listens to Dark Shadows more than Doctor Who, but she may well listen to these before I do. Big Finish has contacted Eccleston multiple times about reprising his role as the Ninth Tenth Doctor; he had never said "never," only "not at this time." If Billie Piper not going to join him, I wold slot these during the last few minutes of "Rose," where the TARDIS disappears, then reappears (years later?).

I haven't re-watched the Eccleston stories lately, but it seems to me that there's a number of gaps that new stories could be slotted into.

Probably. But with or without Billie?

In any case, I trust the folks a Big Finish, wherever they decide to slot them.

Good question.

The Ninth Doctor and Rose are back on present-day Earth at the end of "The End of the World"  .There's wiggle room there for him to have gone off by himself for a bit.

Over on the Sixth Doctor discussion thread, after a series of audio stories in which the Sixth Doctor traveled solo, I opined that the "Old Sixie" (as Colin Baker refers to his character) is one who works well by himself and that that assessment is not true of every Doctor. I think it is true of the Ninth Doctor as well.

That's the most obvious gap I found. There's a few other places where you could stretch it a bit - they're in the TARDIS at the end of one episode and at the start of the next, but it's not necessarily a direct follow-on, and would allow for "I dropped her off in 2115 so she could see Star Wars Episode 30", or something like that.
