From the New York Post"'Superman’ Artist Stunned to Find ‘Donated’ Work on Sale"

The long and short of it:

Superman artist Al Plastino, 91, was at the New York Comic Con, and was surprised to find the original pages he drew for “Superman’s Mission for President Kennedy” -- the commemorative work he did after the President was assasinated -- being sold, because he understood they had been donated to the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library 50 years ago.

They weren't; a private collector had them, and was offering them for a starting bid of $200,000.

  • And no one knew this for fifty years!

  • I am shocked! shocked! by the implication that Mort Weisinger told yet another lie. (Cue Hendrie.)

  • The fifty-year lag surprised me, too. I suppose it's the sort of thing you would only find out about if you checked with the library, and I'm not surprised that Plastino never saw reason to do that.

  • You know, one of the reasons I stopped watching pro wrestling was when I really began to understand how the wrestlers were exploited by the promoters.  I'm beginning to feel that way about comics, too.

A follow-up: "Superman Artwork of JFK Makes It to His Library"

DC bought the pages in December and donated them to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston.

  • Good news is always great to hear!

  • ...BTW , Mr. Plastino's death came post-this event .

At least he got to find it out !!!!!!!!!!! (and we did become Facebook friends , too - :-) - I commented to him once about the fact that it was , apparently , the Murdoch NEW YORK POST that found out about the pages , he , of course , felt kindly towards them) .
