SUPERMAN ANNUAL #14

On one level, Superman Annual #14 is a retelling of “Superboy’s Big Brother” (i.e., Mon-El from Superboy #89), but it’s mainly a history of Dax-Am in the post-post-post-]Crisis DCU. Only 10 of this issue’s 38 page story deal with Mon-El, only three of those deal with Mon-El and young Clark Kent in Smallville, and only one of those has any dialogue. I like James Robinson, but I don’t think the history of Dax-Am is a story that particularly needed to be told. If I were editor of this comic, I would have instructed Robinson to focus on the Mon-El/Superboy story. What really has me excited about this comic, though, is the five-page preview of Superman: Secret Origin #1! I very seldom ever read any of the previews DC includes in their comics from time-to-time. I already know in advance whether or not I’ll be buying a particular new series. Equally seldom has one of these previews influenced my opinion one way or the other (except the Animal Man preview recently), but occasionally there’s a preview of a series, such as Superman: Secret Origin, which I can’t wait to read! I’ll have more to say about Superman: Secret Origin on September 2nd (or shortly thereafter).

  • I think the most interesting thing is...Mon-El has both Kryptonian and Earthling genes...he literally is the man with a heritage on both planets and given the, probable, coming war, it's fitting that he and Kal-El will be fighting Gen. Zod and Gen. Lane to stop it.
  • Has the planet been renamed Dax-Am, now? It used to be Daxam...

I agree. I didn't think this was a particularly interesting story or history.
  • It is still Daxam, but we learn that it got its name from the Kryptonian explorer who discovered it, Dax-am.
