Obituary

 

While he was most famous as the announcer for Saturday Night Live, if you're an American TV watcher between the ages of ten and ninety, you've almost certainly heard his voice, even if you've never seen SNL.   I remember first hearing him as the announcer for the game show Jeopardy when I was a kid, a role which he gleefully parodied for the video of "Weird" Al Yankovic's I Lost on Jeopardy.

 

An interesting note, he was also the announcer who broke the news of JFK's assassination to NBC Viewers.

 

To my mind, there's an art to being a great announcer. You have to have a great voice, sure, but you also have to know how to use it.  Don Pardo had a great voice, and he knew how to use it.
