I'm thinking about writing a column for early May that would be checklist of the better Ultron stories. But whether I do or not, I'm curious which Ultron stories the Legionnaires favor. Age of Ultron? The new Rage of Ultron OGN? The West Coast Avengers "Bride of Ultron" storyline? Ultron's second appearance, which gave us The Vision? The first Ultron/Crimson Cowl story, in which he pronounced himself as (dramatic pause) "Ultron-5, the Living Automaton"?

(Yes, he really said that.)

So what about it, Legionnaires? What story -- or parts of stories, given the mammoth size of Age of Ultron -- did you like best, and why?

  • No Question Captain,

Avengers #161-#162 the Ant-Man- Bride of Ultron -Jocasta two-parter.

  • Couldn't really say about the first two appearances, since I only read the issue where Crimson Cowl turned out to be Jarvis and missed the middle of his second appearance.

Just my opinion but I would not include Ultron-7. Despite being a crossover between Avengers and Fantastic Four (with the Inhumans tossed in for good measure!) the ending was disappointing when he conquered everybody only to be easily defeated by a toddler having a temper tantrum.

Very Oedipus Rex. Ultron intended to kill his father and marry his mother. At that point I really started hating Ultron.

There was also the West Coast Avengers story where Ultron-13 turned out to be good. Ultron-12 destroyed him and erased all files so a new Ultron-13 couldn't be made, while mocking Hank that he'd finally had a good son but he'd taken him away from him. So here he was Cain and Abel. I think this was the last Ultron story I read.

Totally agree. I would also include Ultron Unlimited by Busiek and Perez and the story arc which contained the first appearance of the Vision from the late 60s.
  • Ultron Unlimited, hands down.  Ultron slaughtered an entire country, just to get the Avengers' attention - he was never that deadly before.  The climax of the story is one of the most memorable sequences of the last 20 years or so, when a battered, bruised, and defiant Avengers team confronts Ultron, and Thor utters the phrase that became an instant classic:

Ultron.  We would have words with thee.

That's some good stuff right there.

  • I've never had much use for Ultron myself, BUT I did like his appearance in Daredevil during the"Acts of Vengeance " storyline in which DD and a couple of the (blech!) Inhumans defeated him. To me it shows the hubris of an overconfident robot.

  • You might want to try getting used to the Inhumans. With X-Men unavailable for movies Marvel intends to really push Medusa and her family now.
  • Tough question. Now that I think of it, my favorite stories with Ulton in them (some mentioned above) aren't necessarily my favorite Ultron stories. They are my favorites because they feautre the first appearance of the Vision, or the wedding of Quicksilver and Crystal, or delve into the personality of Hank Pym. I think I'll have to go along with John Dunbar. My favorite Ultron story is "Ultron Unlimited" from Avengers (1997 series) #19-20. Remember that full page panel with hundreds of Ultrons? That's the first thing that popped into my head.

  • 1936669068?profile=RESIZE_320x320For me, his seemingly final defeat in this sequence will always stand out. I like that a little kid kicks him around and disconnects him.

  • I loved this scene, too, and could quote some of it when we covered the poem in school later on, much to my teacher's amazement. Two things that I noticed looking back on it now:

    * Earlier in the issue, Ultron notes that his only weakness is his electrodes. I had to laugh -- why would a villain tell everyone what his weakness was? But that adds significance to the "PFFT!" in panel 8.

    * Why does a robot need nostrils?

  • Can I ressurect this thread with a specific Ultron product discussion?

What did anyone think of the OGN Rage of Ultron and it's ramifications.

I believe it's set 'AFTER Secret Wars' so 'here be spoilers'.......

    SPOILER

In my eyes I thought it a very good interesting and actually fairly well paced original story  which by the end was clearly produced simply to remove Hank Pym from the Marvel chessboard.

I find myself not actually minding too much the way that they did it which suprises me. I've always quite liked Hank and did not really like the pathetric wife-beater character he's been saddled with for decades.

This story flows quite well once the 'Ultron had his brainwaves' is accepted and I came away from 'RAGE' thinking they had actually given Hank an acceptable swansong....

    ...Anyone...?
