  • I only have the first Young Avengers TPB so my knowledge of them is limited to their Handbook entries. Hulkling has a heroic legacy with PLENTY of drama. So does Wiccan, I think. Will Hawkeye still be called Hawkeye?

Strange that it's back to Marvel Boy, not Justice. The contemporary Vance Astro has come a long way since the 80s but this seems like a big step backwards, almost (dare I say it?) of New Warriors proportions. Plus he now has a ladies' man reputation.

I have no idea who this new Miss America is.

And Loki, no doubt, will be....Loki, which is almost reason enough to buy the book.

    I may try it!

  • Gillen & McKelvie? Teen Loki? I'm there.
  • I'm not sure this is going to make up for the cancellation of Avengers Academy but I'm certainly willing to give it a try. I've certainly enjoyed, sometimes even loved, previous Young Avengers stories.

  • Heinberg made the YA seem fresh and new, even though it was the same old trick of giving us variations and rehashes of what was already out there. All of them are 'Legacy' heroes to some extent or another. Their freshness comes from how Marvel hadn't done much with the young legacy thing before. I'm thinking that Heinberg had the two boys be Wanda's children all along, so even they can't be called 'original' heroes either, even if they looked it at first.

Another factor that made them fresh was that Heinberg was a writer more used to serving a mainstream audience, so it wasn't all aimed at the CBR crowd.

The art was pretty good too. I didn't like how subsequent appearances of the team was limited to event tie-ins, and it lost its way there. If I'm gonna read YA again, I'll have to get my hands on the Crusade story sometime.

So the Morrison Marvel Boy is back in his old duds? What was all that flailing around with the Protector about? Why did Bendis put him in the Dark Avengers anyway, if he hadn't a clue what to do with him? Sheesh! It'll be interesting to see what Gillen does with the character, at least.
  • I feel certain you'll get a chance to buy a collected TPB of The Children's Crusade before too long.

  • Yeah, I'm excited about Loki. That's a wild twist.

I'm not sure that's Vance Astro as Marvel Boy, though -- it looks more like the Grant Morrison Marvel Boy, who went by "The Protector" in Avengers until recently. Also, where is Wiccan's brother, the speedster? An unsupervised adolescent super-speedster could get into a lot of trouble pretty fast!

As to Hawkeye, Clint Barton told this Hawkeye that she could keep using the name if she wanted in the recent Young Avengers maxi-series, whose name I have forgotten.

  • Am I embarassed!!! I looked at the cover and thought Wiccan was Vance Astro!! (Darn headbands!) I mistook the power waves around him for some symbolic homage to Captain America's shield (see Guardians of the Galaxy 1990's series).

No, that's definitely Marvel Boy/the Protector. Which is still odd because the Avengers aren't supposed to trust him anymore as he was still an agent of the Kree Empire...unless he gains so much popularity that he usurps Carol Danvers as the new, new, new, new (?) Captain Marvel! :-)

  • They seem to have dropped the Morrison idea for Marvel Boy's powers, that he stole them from the most resilient thing on earth: a cockroach. Fast, strong, omniverous, adaptable to all climates and virtually unkillable -- pretty cool powers, if you don't think about them too closely.

  • I must reread that series sometime.  Someone was going to cover it in our Morrison reviews, but must have found something better to do with their time...

  • That was me at one point, but you told me to hold off since there was so much else being discussed and upcoming, so I did.
