From Comic Chronicles

Sept. 8, 2012

The preliminary data for comic book sales for August 2012 has been released, and The Comics Chronicles has its initial analysis online here:
Comic-book store orders of comic books and graphic novels were solidly up again in August, which brings us our first chance for a comparison with any part of the DC relaunch — as Justice League #1 went on sale on the last day of the month last year. It met the challenge handily: August appears to have marked the second-highest dollar orders for any month in the last 15 years; its $44.6 million for all comics and graphic novels is just slightly less than May 2012's record-setting total.
Looking forward, the comparisons are not that heavy a lift, given how strong the summer has been. Only one of the DC relaunch months in 2011, November, topped $40 million — whereas every month this summer has beaten $40 million. 2012's sales are projected to surpass 2011's sales for the whole year in early November. As I note, Marvel or DC (though not Marvel AND DC) could take the rest of the year off, and comics shops probably still beat 2011's sales.
