Captain Comics says: Conan deposes King Numedides to become ruler of Aquilonia in the first issue. It's a testament to how much I loved Robert E. Howard stories as a lad that I know the name "Numedides" better than I do the names of most historical kings.
"Aquilonia," like most Hyborian place names, comes from the annals of antiquity. There was a Battle of Aquilonia in Italy (precise location unknown) where the Roman Republic defeated the Samnites in 293 BCE. Samnia was north of Naples on the opposite side of the peninsula, so it was probably around there somewhere.
In the Hyborian Age, Aquilonia was the premier kingdom of the West, in what is Hyboria's Europe. Aquilonia can be imagined to stretch from modern eastern France across a dry English Channel to a dry Irish Sea. It includes Poitain (a combination of Poitou and Aquitaine) as one of its provinces, which is clearly meant to be French-ish, along with Gunderland (the Netherlands) and The Bossonian Marches (Wales). This idea is buttressed by its location as north of Zingara (Spain), east of the Pictish Wilderness (Native Americans with vaguely Iroquois names and language), south of Cimmeria (Irish and Scottish Celts), northwest of Argos (Greece) and west of Nemedia (a combo of the Holy Roman Empire and Byzantium). Here's what L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter said about Aquilonia in Conan the Swordsman: "Influenced by medieval Western Europe and elements of Colonial North America. The name is borrowed from Aquilonia, a city of Southern Italy, between modern Venosa and Benevento. It is also an ancient name for Quimper and resembles that of Aquitaine, a French region ruled by England for a long portion of the Middle Ages. The name is derived from Latin aquilo, 'north wind.' Aquila also means 'eagle' in Latin."
Like in "Prince Valiant" and ERB's John Carter of Mars stories, the son of the titular character, named Conn, becomes the protagonist in many stories.
