BEST BETS
For more information on Best Bets and other titles,
consult the "This Week's Comics" section below.
AVENGERS & X-MEN: AXIS #9 (of 9, $4.99, Marvel Comics): This is the climax to Marvel’s latest big crossover story, in which many of the world’s heroes and villains have had their alignment – you know, good/evil, lawful/chaotic – flipped. Evidently some will stay that way, some will die (at least temporarily), and this issue will tell us who ends up what.
THE AVENGER SPECIAL 2014: THE TELEVISION KILLERS ($7.99, Dynamite): This is one of three Dynamite specials this week starring pulp characters in pulp-style adventures, with pulp-style covers. (The other two are DOC SAVAGE SPECIAL 2014: WOMAN OF BRONZE and THE SHADOW ONE-SHOT 2014: AGENTS OF THE SHADOW, $7.99.) They had me at “pulp”!
THE COMPLETE CORTO MALTESE VOL 1: UNDER THE SIGN OF CAPRICORN (TPB, $29.99, IDW Publications): “Corto Maltese” is a legendary adventure strip by the legendary writer/artist Hugo Pratt about a globe-trotting sailor named … well, you know. It’s so legendary, in fact, that an island on “Arrow” is named Corto Maltese. Now IDW is planning to reprint the entire series in a 12-volume collection, starting with “Under the Sign of the Capricorn.” I can’t really say how good it is, as I’ve never read it, but I sure intend to. After all, it’s legendary.
GRAVEYARD SHIFT #1 (of 4, $3.50, Image Comics): Image describes this new miniseries as “Fright Night-style thrills and Castle-style crime-solving as a homicide detective and his girlfriend find their love put to the ultimate test when they run afoul of a gang of vampires!” Vampires have been kinda overdone lately, but Image has been on a roll lately, and the writer of this series – Jay Faerber – won me over with Noble Causes.
ROBIN RISES: ALPHA #1 ($4.99, DC Comics): I never thought I’d miss Damian Wayne, but the little creep really grew on me. So I’m glad to see him back, which happens in this issue – but in what form, DC won’t say.
THEY’RE NOT LIKE US #1 ($2.99, Image): The description of this new series makes it sound like “What if mutants appeared and there was no Professor Xavier to teach them to play nice?” In other words, the teens in this series who get super-powers acts like teens everywhere: Rude, selfish and borderline psychopathic. Sounds like fun!

This is one of the strangest homages I've ever seen. Remove the standing man, the fallen man and the bloody stump, and you have Andrew Wyeth's classic painting, "Cristina's World."
Cristina was a real person, and that was her farm, where she lived with her bachelor brother. (She was in her 50s when this was painted, but Wyeth used his twentysomething fiance as a model as well.) Cristina had an undiagnosed degenerative disease (probably polio), but refused to use a wheelchair, and instead crawled or dragged herself around the farm. Note the wasted arms on Cristina, and that she's not standing -- because she can't. And she's a long way from that farmhouse. Her posture is one of ... what? Longing? Sadness? Dread? Determination? Everyone sees something different.
Wyeth's father had died in an accident in 1945, three years before he painted "Cristina's World," and those who know these things say that his palette became more muted and his subjects more strained and plaintive, as if they were acting out his grief. I'm no expert, but certainly "Cristina's World" is unforgettable even if you don't know the back story.
What on earth it's doing on this comic book cover, I have no idea.

• Celebrate 30 years of The Terminator!
“Straczynski and Woods are on a roll and they show absolutely no sign of stopping or slowing anytime soon.” -- Comic Bastards
One thing I've always wondered about with the Terminator franchise is why the people of the future were armed to the teeth with automatic weapons -- weapons that seemed utterly useless against the Terminators, and were probably more dangerous to each other in a firefight.
Shouldn't they have developed weapons specifically useful against robots? I'm not sure what that would be -- maybe something that shot talcum powder into their gears? Paint guns to cover their sensors? I'm no engineer, but there had to be something they could cobble together that would be more effective than bullets, which in the course of all those movies and TV shows, never stopped one single Terminator.
Anybody know if there's an in-story explanation? Or are the guns simply there because they look cool?

It’s up to renegade hero Tommy Tomorrow to stop his former ally – but he ends up absorbing Sorensen’s power and becoming an all-powerful tyrant himself!
Maybe I was expecting too much after Dark Knight Rises and Watchmen, but I felt pretty let down by this 1991 "prestige" project. Or maybe I just didn't know much or care much about the characters being put through the ringer here. Does anybody really care what happens to Tommy

THE COMPLETE CORTO MALTESE VOL 1: UNDER THE SIGN OF CAPRICORN (TPB)
Writer/Art/Cover: HUGO PRATT
TPB • B&W • $29.99 • 140 pages • 9.25” x 11.75”
Long before the term “graphic novel” entered the popular lexicon, the Italian cartoonist Hugo Pratt pioneered the long-form “drawn literature” story in 1967 when he introduced Corto Maltese in the epic adventure “The Ballad of the Salty Sea.”
Pratt set the standard for all adult adventure comics in Europe, and by the mid-1970s Corto was the continent’s most popular series and Pratt the world’s leading graphic novelist. “He is one of the true masters of comic art,” says Frank Miller.
Hugo Pratt’s peripatetic sailor was featured in a series of 29 stories. The adventures of this modern Ulysses are set during the first 30 years of the 20th Century in such exotic locales as Pratt’s native Venice, the steppes of Manchuria, the Caribbean islands, the Danakil deserts, the Amazon forests and the waves of the Pacific.
Pratt’s books remain best sellers in Europe and are published in a dozen languages yet until now, Corto Maltese has been poorly represented in English.
“We intend to change all that,” says EuroComics editor Dean Mullaney. “Pratt deserves a first-rate American edition and America deserves Corto Maltese. We’re proud to publish Hugo Pratt as the first graphic novelist in our EuroComics imprint; we’re similarly pleased to publish him alongside Milton Caniff and Alex Toth, two important artistic influences on Pratt, from our long-standing Library of American Comics line.”
The late Kim Thompson, best known as the Vice President and Co-Publisher of Fantagraphics Books, summed up the Pratt’s historical importance: “Corto Maltese was the first European strip to advance a mature, artistically serious sensibility within the traditional adventure format. The elliptical narrative of the stories, the pervasive sense of destiny and tragedy, the side trips into the worlds of dreams and magic -- all capped off with the exotic, guarded nature of the hero -- combined with Pratt’s hard-won craft, worldly experience, and scrupulous research to form a work of breathtaking scope and power.”
EuroComics is working closely with Patrizia Zanotti, Pratt’s long-time collaborator, to present the complete Corto Maltese in a series of 12 quality trade paperbacks in Pratt’s original oversized black and white format. They will also feature new translations from Pratt’s original Italian scripts by Simone Castaldi, Associate Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures at Hofstra (and author of Drawn and Dangerous: Italian Comics of the 1970s and 1980s), and Mullaney.
“At long last, Hugo Pratt’s masterpiece washes up on American shores the way it was intended to be seen and read, the way fans all over the world have known and loved it for decades,” said Eisner Award winner Matt Fraction. “I read my first Corto Maltese story when I was ten years old and, ever since, this was the version of Corto I’ve wanted on my shelves. ”
The first of the twelve volumes, Corto Maltese: Under the Sign of Capricorn, to be published December 2014, collects the first six inter-connected short stories Pratt created in France in the early 1970s: “The Secret of Tristan Bantam,” “Rendez-vous in Bahia,” “Sureshot Samba,” “The Brazilian Eagle,” “So Much for Gentlemen of Fortune,” and “The Seagull’s Fault.”
The second volume, collecting the subsequent five stories, and will be released Spring 2015.
The series will also be released in a matched set of six original art-sized limited edition hardcovers, each containing the equivalent of two of the trade paperbacks.
“Hugo Pratt is one of the true masters of comic art.” -- Frank Miller
“Hugo Pratt is among the greatest storytellers in all of literature, but what’s more, he also draws like a god.” -- Milo Manara
“I read my first CORTO MALTESE story when I was 10 years old and ever since, this was the version of CORTO I’ve wanted on my shelves.” -- Matt Fraction

JOE KUBERT'S ENEMY ACE ARTIST'S EDITION (HC)
Writer: BOB KANIGHER
Art/Cover: JOE KUBERT
HC • BW • $75.00 net discount item • 152 Pages • 12” x 17”
Reimagining the popular war stories that filled the pages of comic books throughout the 1950’ and 1960’s, Joe Kubert’s Enemy Ace made an unlikely hero into a genre icon. The classic tales of airborne suspense that first thrilled readers over 50 years ago, will make their mark all over again with Joe Kubert Enemy Ace: Artist’s Edition.
Created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert in 1968 as an alternate take on the highly successful war-based comics, Enemy Ace introduced a hero that by all superficial definitions was a villain. A high-flying pilot for the Germans, Hans von Hammer was a star soldier but morally conflicted by the duties that his role demanded.
“I’ve loved every single one of our Artist’s Editions, but for me, this is the big one,” said Dirk Wood, IDW’s Vice President of Marketing. “Ask Scott Dunbier, I’ve bugged him about the possibility of this book since pretty much my first day at IDW. Kanigher and Kubert’s Enemy Ace was my absolute favorite comic as a kid, and remains so to this day. To see that material again, in this format, is going to be something special.”
Joe Kubert: Enemy Ace Artist’s Edition presents five entire issues of the decorated DC Comics series Star Spangled War Stories, including #139, 140, 141, 142 144. Scanned directly from the original art, this complete collection will also feature bonus material like covers and promos. At over 150 pages, the Artist’s Edition measures at 12” x 17”.
The masterwork joins the two Artist’s Editions that already showcased Kubert, Joe Kubert’s Tarzan of the Apes and Joe Kubert’s Tor.

In desperation, alchemists on a cracked and ruined Earth -- where dead men’s ashes rain down and a plague of spore-beasts terrorize the living -- create Sym. She is their last hope, their Savior. The mysterious figure at the heart of the Image Comics graphic novel DARK ENGINE by Ryan Burton and John Bivens is a primal force. Her story begins in DARK ENGINE VOLUME 1: THE ART OF DESTRUCTION, due in stores this winter.
Sent back in time to save humankind, Sym is a relentless killer, with gore in her long hair, ribsword in her hand, and a skull as her helmet. But what her creators do not realize is that, though they created her, Sym will not necessarily do their bidding.
“I wanted a female Beowulf … a Gilgamesh … a Kratos that didn’t shy away from her instincts, that was violent, that was fury-born,” said Burton of his fierce protagonist in an interview at Women Write About Comics. “That wasn’t afraid to get hurt or make a incredibly violent gambit in order to cut down her enemy. I believe that all women are a force of nature -- they are capable, they are adaptable, they are scary smart. So with all that, it felt natural to make Sym a woman.”
With visceral, hard-etched art and action spanning epochs, DARK ENGINE is a graphic novel experience that artist J.H. Williams III (Sandman: Overture, Promethea, Batwoman) describes as “an otherworldly horrific poetic movement that is immediately immersive.”
Praise for DARK ENGINE:
“... there’s no denying the uniqueness of this concept and the flair with which it’s being executed. There’s nothing like watching a vicious character set history on fire; and even if that’s an itch you don’t think you have, you’ll get it scratched when you read Dark Engine.” -- Michelle White, Multiversity Comics
“Dark Engine is hauntingly beautiful and unique. It beckons you in with poetic dialogue and captivates you with visceral force.” -- Zack Thompson, Bloody Disgusting
Multiversity Comics: “... there is really no other medium where one or as small a handful of people can create something so large in scope.”
Comic Book Resources: “She is battling ever-changing environments that bring about a variety of predators. Some of the threats are prehistoric, some are human and some are -- other.”

SUNSTONE (TPB)
Writer/Art/Cover: STJEPAN SEJIC
128 PAGES / FC / M / $14.99
Two women deal with modern themes of sex, relationships and fetishism in this erotic romantic comedy.
A webcomic sensation and #1 bestseller on Amazon, with tens of millions of views on DeviantArt, SUNSTONE by Stjepan Sejic is being published as a graphic novel in December by Image Comics/Top Cow. The story of two women who find love through their shared passion for bondage, SUNSTONE is poised to introduce readers to a new kind of S&M story, one that will surprise readers with the heart and humanity of its story.
Ally and Lisa are happy, well-adjusted young women, but they’re both a little lonely. Ally loves the creativity of being a “domme” in her sex life but hasn’t found the right person to share it with. And Lisa … Well, Lisa loves to be tied up. When they find each other online, they know they have to meet. But bondage is all about trust, and even after they’ve explored every facet of their sexuality together, Ally and Lisa will find the ultimate test of this trust lies in three simple words.
Writer and artist Stjepan Sejic (APHRODITE IX, DEATH VIGIL) has one word for the fan response to SUNSTONE: “overwhelming.” He attributes the success of his love story to its themes. “I don't just mean the obvious ones of fetishism and general sexuality,” he clarified.
“In Sunstone, the main theme is in fact human nature. Sunstone has over time become a book showing the very human and understandable nature of fetishism and people responded to that.” Sejic categorizes the comments he’s gotten from reader three ways:
I came for the art but got hooked and stayed for the story.
I'm not into bdsm but this made me understand it.
This story helped me make some sense of my own fetishism.
And finally, the comments Sejic says he “will forever treasure,” are notes from couples who thank him for SUNSTONE helping them share what they had been too embarrassed to tell their partners.
SUNSTONE readers are the best ambassadors of this unique story, so here are what a few die-hard fans had to say when they were asked why they love it:
“Loved it from its inception and will love it forevermore. It shows the reality behind the BDSM life. And frankly my friends and I needed that. It shows that there isn't anything wrong with us. ... We just don't like vanilla. ;)” - @ErinMorragin
“The series is too much fun. A character-driven take on the subject & one hell of a gorgeous comic.” -- @Elysian_Chaos
“#Sunstone is a fantastic comic for anyone who loves great art, relatable characters, a beautiful love story, and a bit of kink!” -- @Jo_Techsmith
“started following for the art and unique theme, stayed for the story. The sun is always brighter with a new page of #sunstone” -- @Gumberian
"Because the art will draw you in, but the story will keep you - bound, if you will.” - @MooskieNet
“been following since it was just concept art on DA! Killer aesthetic, with great character and story. What's not to love?” -- @Gospodin
A must-read for erotica fans, SUNSTONE will be in comic book stores on December 24 and bookstores on January 6. It is available for pre-order now.SUNSTONE by Stjepan Sejic.
I guess after the success of 50 Shades of Grey, the mainstreaming of BDSM was inevitable. Hey, maybe someday William Moulton Marston will be considered a visionary!

We all have advantages over one another, but what if the next generation of youth were capable of things most of us could only imagine? What would they do -- and who would they be? A doctor? An athlete? A soldier? A hero? Since the beginning of time we’ve all had to make choices about how to use our own unique abilities, but not like this generation ... THEY’RE NOT LIKE US.
In a spotlight interview with Stephenson, he described the series as a “slow-building horror” that explores what happens if people take advantage of their special abilities for personal gain instead of goodwill. “Power does different things to different people, and in They’re Not Like Us, we’re going to meet a group of very desensitized young people whose extraordinary abilities have put them in a very unique position within the modern world.”
“When Eric told me the concept of They're Not Like Us and asked if I'd like to draw it, I said ‘Yes’ with something approaching superhuman speed,” added Gane. “It's smart, satirical and more than a little bit sinister. Now, I'm not psychic or anything, but you expect that edge from Image Comics and Eric's writing.”

Guanyin's safety on the journey will be under constant threat from bandits, demons and other supernatural beings. The Monkey God will be difficult to control -- he was imprisoned for rebelling against gods and emperors. How will Guanyin be able to make the Monkey God deliver his side of their agreement? And will the two be able to complete their journey to the West?

COMPLETE PEANUTS VOL 6 1961-1962 (HC)
Publisher: FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS
Writer/Art/Cover: CHARLES M. SCHULZ
Launching into the 1960s, Schulz adds another new cast member. Two, in fact: The obnoxious Frieda, of "naturally curly hair" fame, and her inert, seemingly boneless cat Faron. The rapidly maturing Sally, who was after all just born in the previous volume, is ready to start kindergarten and not at all happy about it. Linus' life is particularly turbulent in this volume, as he is forced to wear glasses, sees the unexpected return of his favorite teacher, Miss Othmar, and coaxes Sally into the cult of the Great Pumpkin (with regrettable results). Snoopy, meanwhile, becomes a compulsive water sprinkler head stander, unhappily befriends a snowman or two, and endures a family crisis involving a little family of birds. Plus baseball blowouts (including a rare team victory), Beethoven birthdays, and plenty of dubious psychiatric help for a nickel. This book collects 730 daily and Sunday comic strips, the vast majority of which are not currently available in any in-print Peanuts collection, and many of which have never been reprinted since their initial appearance in papers over 50 years ago. New introduction by legendary jazz pianist/vocalist Diana Krall!
