COMICS GUIDE FOR FEB. 25, 2015
Titles listed in the Comics Guide come from the weekly list at the Diamond Comic Distributors Inc. website, and are subject to change. The information in the Comics Guide comes not only from Diamond but from solicitations, press releases and previews released by the publishers, except for random comments by Captain Comics (in blue)
THE CAPTAIN'S BEST BETS
Here art the Captain's top books of the week. For more information on these books and the entire list, continue to "This Week's Comics" below.
BLACK HOOD #1 ($3.99, Archie Comics): After decades of failures, Archie has finally figured out how to get me interested in the MLJ superheroes. First, instead of rolling out a new superhero universe, they are introducing books/characters one at a time. Second, each book/character is unique -- The Fox is witty and weird; Black Hood is gritty revenge fantasy. Will the two characters ever meet? I hope not! Nor do I want them to appear in the next book in the pipeline, The Shield, which promises to be gung-ho, superhero hoo-hah (and stars a chick). Why should they meet? Why should there be a coherent universe, if that detracts from each book's uniqueness? I say make 'em all different, Archie, and I'll be in line for them.
D4VE #1 (of 5, $3.99, IDW): D4VE is a robot trapped in a soul-sucking job. Speaking as a non-robot in the same circumstance, this could be fun!
JOE FRANKENSTEIN #1 (of 4): Chuck Dixon and Graham Nolan do their take on one of the classic Universal monsters. How could I possibly not like this?
ORPHAN BLACK #1 ($3.99, IDW): If you like the TV show, then this is for you!
THE FADE-OUT VOL 1 ($19.99, Image): Nobody does noir comics better than Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, and here's the first collection of their latest effort, set in the glamor days of Hollywood. And, hey, if you like this, you might want to try their Criminal Special Edition one-shot ($4.99)!
SIDER-GWEN #1 ($3.99, Marvel): If, like most Spidey fans, you've had a secret crush on Gwen Stacy for decades, your time has come at last ... she's finally not dead! (Sorta!)

EISNER AND HARVEY AWARD WINNER!
In this final volume of The Manara Library, the Maestro’s unmatched draftsmanship and versatility are on full display, with stories spanning science fiction, westerns, war, creature features and more! Featuring the sexy political space opera Escape from Piranesi; the provocative illustrated history of the human race “The Story of Humanity”; Manara and Castelli’s classic tale of spiritual discovery, The Snowman; and Manara’s Reality Comics, among others; all newly translated.
The most comprehensive collection of Manara’s works ever released!
I've mildly enjoyed these, and I'm glad they got printed, but I'm kinda pleased this is the last one. As my wife pointed out, Manara really only has one female body face and type which he draws over and over, so it does tend to get a little repetitious. SIx volumes is quite enough Manara for me for one lifetime (and maybe one or two volumes too many).

The return of Mister X!
Visionary creator Dean Motter returns with a new masterpiece of retrofuturism! Radiant City is a metropolis as mysterious as its alleged creator -- Mister X. What should’ve improved the city left it cursed. Now, Mister X must watch over the City of Dreams turned City of Nightmares, keeping vigil during a holiday season that’s anything but jolly.
• From visionary artist and designer Dean Motter!
• The first issue of a new arc, a great jumping-on point for new readers!
“Motter has created his own off-beat, stylized cityscape, and even when it engages with contemporary culture it does so in its own unique way.” -- Comic Book Resources
I really enjoyed "Mister X" back when it first came out, back in the days when you'd find it in books with names like Vortex from publishers you've never heard of. Experimental comics were really coming in to full swing in those days, and it was exciting. But somewhere along the way I lost interest in ol' Mister X.

In the post-apocalyptic city of New Angeles, killing isn’t just a crime – it’s entertainment.
When the “big one” finally hit the West Coast, Los Angeles was left in ruins. And when the U.S. government decided to cut the city loose, things went from bad to worse. To survive, L.A. did what it does best: It turned survival into entertainment.
Now, thirty years later, the city of New Angeles is thriving once more thanks to the blood sport known as SUICIDERS – a TV series that combines the spectacle of hand-to-hand combat with elaborate, high-tech obstacles that test each competitor’s ability to survive. But these competitors have an edge: They’ve been freakishly enhanced by drugs and technology. The results are both marvelous and monstrous, as the man called The Saint begins to rise above his fellow Suiciders.
SUICIDERS is a dark, post-apocalyptic epic that tells the story of a strange, brutal world, written and illustrated by Lee Bermejo, the #1 New York Times best-selling writer/artist behind JOKER, BATMAN: NOEL, LUTHOR and BEFORE WATCHMEN: RORSCHACH.

This 208-page collection will showcase series co-creator Robertson's finished cover artwork from the ongoing series, plus three spin-off miniseries, Herogasm, Highland Laddie and Butcher, Baker, Candlestickmaker. "Dynamite has put together a great collection featuring all the cover art from The Boys, presenting alternate version, early drafts, sketches, and more into a cool hardcover collection," says Robertson. "I'm proud of this book as I really enjoyed my collaboration with (Garth) Ennis while creating these covers, and am pleased to show The Boys fans a peek behind the curtain as to what went into creating these covers. I think this will be a very unique collection and a must-have for any fan of The Boys series."
In addition to The Art of The Boys hardcover edition, Dynamite will make two collectible editions also available, each featuring a personal touch from the superstar artist. The Boys, a monumentally successful comic book series co-created by Garth Ennis (Preacher, Punisher) and Darick Robertson (Wolverine, Transmetropolitan), introduced a world where superheroes may stand as pinnacles of justice ... but when they abuse their power and authority, who brings justice to the superheroes? The answer: The Boys do. Billy Butcher, Wee Hughie, Mother's Milk, The Frenchman and The Female comprise the tough-as-nails crew that keep the "supes" in line -- protecting mankind from some truly deranged superheroes.
"We simply couldn't let our 10-year anniversary end without tipping our hats to the series that, even after all this time, is still beloved by so many fans," says Nick Barrucci, CEO and Publisher of Dynamite. "The Boys was a runaway hit that served as a cornerstone of our company throughout its run. Darick Robertson's cover artwork, with its powerful imagery and uncompromising attitude, made it the can't-miss item on comic shop racks everywhere. It's high time we celebrate his vast body of work on this seminal Mature Readers title!"
Darick Robertson is an American artist best known for his work as a comic book illustrator. Highly prolific, Robertson has illustrated hundreds of comics in his twenty-plus years in the industry. His body of work ranges from science fiction characters of his own creation to headlining on renowned classic characters from Marvel and DC Comics (Wolverine, Punisher, New Warriors, etc.). Robertson is best known as the co-creator and illustrator of the satirical comics Transmetropolitan and The Boys.

The partnership between IDW Publishing and Monkeybrain has brought some of the most critically acclaimed digital comic-book series to an entirely new readership, and both are pleased to welcome another to the printed page: D4VE.
A war for Earth was fought and the robots have won but the results are far less “brave new world” and more of the “same old, same old.” Starting February 2015, fans of print comics will get the opportunity to meet D4VE, a great robot war hero who now is trapped behind a desk at a soul-sucking day job.
D4VE is the brainchild of series writer Ryan Ferrier and artist Valentin Ramon. In the five-issue series, D4VE battles traffic, mortgage payments and the mundane when all he wants to do is battle monsters like in his glory days. But those days are gone … right? Little does D4VE know that something big is going to help snap him out of this mid-life: crisis.
“D4VE is a story so close to our hearts, and to be able to bring our special brand of bizarre to the monthly print market is, frankly, insanely freaking cool,” said series writer, Ferrier. “Monkeybrain blessed us with the opportunity to tell this story digital-first, and IDW is the perfect home -- one built on unique and daring storytelling -- for our madness to reach even more readers. We’d have to invent a new word to express our excitement, so we did: we are totally superextribbulated for D4VE to come out through IDW.”
“Having D4VE find a new audience in print through IDW is a huge honor,” said series artist, Ramon. “They are a publisher that inspires so much of what we have aimed to do with our story—pushing boundaries and expectations, featuring characters you can connect with. We hope our readers love D4VE as much as we loved creating it.”
• Featuring a cover by Saga artist, Fiona Staples!!
• “D4VE is a master class in robotic mid life crisis and is ripe with laughs." - Bloody Disgusting
• “Both Ferrier and Ramon are relative newcomers to the industry, but their outstanding work on D4VE makes them two creators to keep an eye on in the future" - The AV Club

One. Of a kind. Sarah’s life was changed dramatically after witnessing the suicide of a woman who looked just like her. Sarah learned that, not only were she and the woman clones, but there were others just like them, and dangerous factions at work set on capturing them all. Now, the mysterious world of Orphan Black widens, with new layers of the conspiracy being peeled back in this miniseries by co-creators John Fawcett and Graeme Manson!
Orphan Black, the acclaimed sci-fi series by Temple Street Productions recently renewed for a third season, assumes a new identity in the form of a comic-book series from IDW Publishing. IDW’s series will not be a clone of the show but will feature some all-new stories set in the complex and thrilling world of Orphan Black.
“Orphan Black, in addition to being a captivating TV series, is a perfect premise for comics,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “And as the second season has expanded the series in exciting new directions, that has only increased the amount of stories we’ll be able to tell in comic-book form.”
IDW Publishing is known for its authenticity and attention to detail when approaching licensed properties and Orphan Black is sure to be a comic book series a delight existing fans and make new ones.
“We’re so thrilled for Orphan Black to take shape as a comic series and join the ranks of IDW’s impressive roster,” said John Young, Managing Director of Temple Street Productions. “Orphan Black was met with an enormous amount of enthusiasm at last year’s Comic-Con which really inspired us to give back to fans of the show through a medium so vital to the science fiction world.”
IDW will be working closely with the show’s producers to expand the Orphan Black world. The first cover image seen here is by artist Nick Runge. The full creative teams and series details will be announced soon, with the first comic-book series launching in early 2015. Striker Entertainment on behalf of Temple Street Productions brokered the deal.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have faced down everything from demons to aliens, but starting in February 2014, a new team of mutated animals will take center stage as they face off against an even greater threat! Appearing in the monthly Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, the Mutanimals have been questionable allies, and now all of their secrets will be revealed in the 4-issue miniseries TMNT: Mutanimals!
When someone close to the Mutanimals goes missing, the team consisting of Old Hob, Slash, Mondo Gecko, Herman the Hermit Crab and Pigeon Pete will be put to the ultimate test. Teamwork doesn’t exactly come easy to these outsiders, but they’ll have to find a way to work together to take on a mysterious new entity known as The Null Group …
With a number of TMNT Micro-Series one-shots, and both The Utrom Empire and Turtles In Time miniseries already under his belt, Paul Allor will again handle the scripting on this series. Returning to the world of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be artist Andy Kuhn, who created the new IDW design for Mutanimals leader Slash and will handle covers and interiors, with Ben Bates providing a variant cover to the first issue.
"IDW and all the creators involved have done an amazing job introducing the Mutanimals into this universe,” said Allor. “It's very exciting to see them get their own mini-series, and an absolute honor to be the guy writing it, especially since it means working again with artist Andy Kuhn. Every TMNT tie-in and mini has offered the readers something new and awesome, and we hope to continue that streak on TMNT: Mutanimals."
“I'm super-stoked to be a part of the team that's bringing The Mutanimals back,” said Kuhn. “This year my Christmas is four months long!”
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series at IDW has garnered consistent acclaim for its exciting new takes on many aspects of the legendary TMNT universe. The Mutanimals starred in their own comic book series in the early ‘90s, and now they’re returning to action in this new adventure that ties in directly with the ongoing series!

CRIMINAL COMES TO IMAGE!
Image Comics is thrilled to announce that CRIMINAL, the award-winning series by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, is finally returning to print in beautifully designed new editions, beginning in January.
And to celebrate the return of the comic that solidified their reputations as Masters of Noir, Brubaker and Phillips, along with colorist Elizabeth Breitweiser, are creating a special 48-page one-shot sure to excite diehard fans and pull in new readers alike. For the true CRIMINAL fanatic, a special CRIMINAL: SAVAGE EDITION magazine-sized variant will also be available.
It's 1976, and Teeg Lawless is doing 30 days in county jail with a price on his head; his only safe company from the savagery: a beat-up old comic magazine his dead cellmate left behind. It's CRIMINAL like you've never seen it before, with a comic within the comic and all those slick ‘70s thrills!
"We've been planning the return of CRIMINAL for the past year, and I couldn't let the launch go by without returning to our underworld for a new story," said Brubaker. "With FATALE and THE FADE OUT, we've been hearing from a lot of new readers, so it couldn't be a better time to get the thing we're most known for back on the shelves."
As an added bonus -- and due to the overwhelmingly positive response to the magazine-size variant of THE FADE OUT -- the CRIMINAL SPECIAL EDITION will also be released in a Savage Edition, a variant in the style of magazine-size comics of the ‘70s!

Collects THE FADE OUT #1-4.
BRUBAKER & PHILLIPS' newest hit series, THE FADE OUT is an epic noir set in the world of noir itself, the backlots and bars of Hollywood at the end of its Golden Era.
A starlet is found dead, a film is stuck in endless reshoots, McCarthyism looms over the studios, and a writer is plagued with memories of the war and a terrible secret. It’s the end of the Golden Era in a place where only lies are true. Brubaker writes a taut, tense script, while Phillips’ signature art embodies the era with its heavy shadows, beautiful dames, and brooding men.
Brubaker explains what about post-War Hollywood attracts him in an interview at Complex magazine: “The glitz and glamor, the fact so much of that world was all lies and masks and fake names, and it really feels like post-World War II Hollywood was almost a gold rush,” he said. “So many people rushing to L.A. dreaming of fame and fortune, and willing to do anything to make it happen.”
In 2013, the creative team announced a five-year exclusive deal with Image Comics that gives them carte blanche to produce the projects that they most want to work on. THE FADE OUT is the first title produced under this deal.
With a $9.99 price tag, THE FADE OUT, VOLUME 1 is one of more than 50 Image Introduces titles that have specially priced first volumes to encourage readers to delve into their next favorite comic book series.
"So far, The Fade Out is the most popular and most-widely written about book that Sean and I have ever done," said writer Brubaker. "And I'm so proud of that, and the work that Sean and our amazing colorist Elizabeth Breitweiser are doing on the series, that I just wanted to make it easier for new readers to try us out. And hopefully this move will help stores meet demand, since we keep selling out of the issues the first week they come out."
Praise for THE FADE OUT:
“Hollywood has never looked so dark, so sinister and so seductive. It’s a story that only a Brubaker/Phillips comic could tell." -- Darren Orf, Paste Magazine
“The Fade Out is a beautiful book that offers the most complete characters and the most fascinating concept the pair have created, and the most interesting theme they’ve explored. It may be the strongest debut in their illustrious partnership.” -- John Parkin, Comics Alliance
“The Fade Out is simply the best at what it does. It's a clear creative statement that any fans of noir shouldn't miss.” -- Marykate Jasper, Comic Book Resources
“For noir lovers, history buffs, and mystery enthusiasts, The Fade Out has already set an incredibly high bar for itself, and there’s every indication it will continue to challenge and surpass expectations.” -- Matt Dodge, Multiversity Comics

New to Image Comics this February, comes Meredith McClaren’s enchanting fantasy HINGES.
Written and drawn by McClaren, the graphic novel introduces the nuts and bolts of a city called Cobble, where one girl new to the city, Orio, must depend on help wherever she can find it. Her assigned familiar, Bauble, has his own agenda however. As the two explore the walls of the city, they find they are not the only new arrivals.
Visually, McClaren had thought about creating a world inhabited by dolls, puppets, and stuffed animals for a few years before a story was even attached to the idea. “Later on I came to Orio, and her growth. The idea of working with dolls meant I could explore a person's development into an individual (from a completely blank slate to a fully realized person) on a much more expedient track then watching a character physically grow up.”
The world in HINGES acts as a character in and of itself in many ways. McClaren added: “I also wanted to play with a world that had a lot of ambiguity. When I look back at the stories I love—the ones that tend to have a more enduring presence—I always come back to the type of stories where the audience isn't given the full explanation but rather a great big sandbox of a world that they can also play with. It's been my observation that the stories people enjoy most are the ones in which they feel they can also participate. I wanted to give my audience that kind of experience. I love it when my audience starts to develop their own theories for why the world of Hinges is the way it is. And I would be ridiculously pleased should some of them find their own stories to tell there.”
HINGES is a modern fairy tale perfect for readers ages nine and up.

HOWTOONS, the comic that taps into kids’ imagination and curiosity with DIY science projects, is back with HOWTOONS: [RE] IGNITION. In this February graphic novel from Image Comics, Celine and Tucker are siblings who wake up in the far future, where energy is scarce and their parents are missing! They explore a strange new Earth using their gadgeteering skills to create projects and experiments to survive hostile tribes and bizarre mechanized threats -- projects and experiments kids and parents can make themselves at home, and learn basic energy literacy at the same time!
Created by MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellow Dr. Saul Griffith and Eisner-Award-nominated comic book artist Nick Dragotta, HOWTOONS celebrated its 10th anniversary with TOOLS OF MASS CONSTRUCTION in July 2014. RE [IGNITION] uses the HOWTOONS model -- incorporating fun science projects into stories -- in a post-apocalyptic adventure story written by Fred Van Lente (Action Philosophers, Archer and Armstrong) with art by Tom Fowler (Quantum and Woody) and Eisner-winning colorist Jordie Bellaire.
“I love making things, making comics. So it’s cool to be able to share that with kids and show them all these different disciplines,” said Dragotta in an interview at Multiversity Comics. “Hopefully we can provide an entertaining story first, that will motivate them to build the projects in the book. Maybe learn something through play.”
In HOWTOONS there is something to interest every kid who picks it up, Dragotta explained, whether they’re into art, stories, design, or engineering. “If the book serves as any kind of primer to opening a reader up to something new, I’m all for it,” he said.
Van Lente praised his artistic collaborators in the same interview. “Tom has such great dynamism and expressiveness to his figures,” he said. “he’s really perfect to work on a kids-oriented project that needs to be full of energy -- no pun intended -- and he and Jordie have done so many projects together they’re kind of mind-melded. It’s mildly frightening.”
Melding science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM), HOWTOONS: RE [IGNITION], is perfect for kids from ages 8 to 12 and a must-have graphic novel for every classroom.

SPIDER-GWEN SPINS INTO HER OWN SERIES!
Marvel's newest, sensational spider-woman is coming back to comic shops in the highly anticipated SPIDER-GWEN #1! Spinning directly out of the pages of the Amazing Spider-Man’s SPIDER-VERSE and the red-hot, sold-out Edge of Spider-Verse #2, is a new ongoing series that already has the whole comic industry buzzing! Jason Latour (Edge of Spider-Verse, Wolverine and the X-Men), artist Robbi Rodriguez (Edge of Spider-Verse, All-New X-Men), and colorist Rico Renzi all return to chronicle the adventures of the breakout character of 2014!
She's Gwen Stacy, who, in an alternate universe, was the one bitten by the radioactive spider giving her spider-powers! She's smart, tough and charming. She drums in a punk rock band and goes to high school just like you. Only she can lift a car and has spider powers! Gwen is back home following the events of Spider-Verse and you won't believe what she's got waiting for her!
Speaking with Marvel.com, Latour confesses that the drum-playing, rebellious Gwen Stacy, a.k.a. Spider-Gwen, has a long road ahead of her to prove she’s not the costumed menace the NYPD has painted her as -- especially since her father is the NYPD Captain tasked with bringing her down. “[Spider-Gwen’s] journey is going to pull her father along into its wake. He knows her secret, and it’s a truth that threatens to make his world into a very dangerous lie.”
Latour also teased villains for Spider-Gwen and her father through the series, “We’ll absolutely see an ‘evil’ Matt Murdock (a.k.a. Daredevil), and the Kingpin. I’m a huge old school Daredevil fan, so I get this real sick thrill out of twisting him around and making him the villain. There’s also a new twist a character you’d immediately identify as a villain, who we’re re-casting as a more complex threat to Gwen and Captain Stacy -- a character coming at her from within the system ...”
“It’s a rare character that gets the public outcry that Spider-Gwen got,” says Senior Editor Nick Lowe. “From the sell-out of Gwen’s first appearance to the groundswell on Twitter we’re excited to bring more Spider-Gwen into the world with the creators who started it all!”
Now is your chance to get on board with the breakout character of the year as she makes her bombastic debut into her very own ongoing series. Don't miss out when Gwen Stacy swings in to comic shops this February in SPIDER-GWEN #1!

Uniting wrestler CM Punk, blockbuster writer Jason Aaron (Thor, Original Sin), rising star Noelle Stevenson (Lumberjanes), Rob Guillory (Chew) and more, this can’t miss lineup brings you three stories featuring three Thors of three eras!
First, wrestling superstar CM Punk makes his comic writing debut alongside artist Rob Guillory for a tale of the brash, boisterous young Thor and his genius idea to prove himself worthy to wield the mighty hammer Mjolnir – by drinking all of Asgard and Midgard under the table!
“The idea was, let’s do a story about young Thor as this kind of brash bratty teenager who’s like, ‘I’m totally worthy of this hammer’,” said CM Punk in an interview with Marvel.com. “’I don’t know why I’m not worthy of the hammer. Look at all this cool stuff I did.”
Then, rising comic stars Noelle Stevenson and Marguerite Sauvage make their Marvel debuts to bring you an all-new tale of the new Thor! Who is the mysterious woman behind the mask? No one in all Ten Realms knows her secret!
“It’s a fun challenge both as a fan of the classic character, but also to be working with a new character who readers haven’t seen much of yet,” says Stevenson, speaking with Marvel.com “I have the old mythology to work with, but I can also help contribute a little bit of new mythology as well!”
Finally, blockbuster Thor writer Jason Aaron and fan-favorite artist Timothy Truman bring you an all-new tale set in the future starring King Thor! Join the Girls of Thunder on their epic quest to find their grandfather the perfect birthday present. How about a brand new Garden of Eden?
Three creative teams. Three Thors. One explosive annual. No fan can afford to miss the explosive THOR ANNUAL #1 – on sale this February!
