COMICS GUIDE FOR FEB. 4, 2015
Titles listed in the Comics Guide come from the weekly list at the Diamond Comic Distributors Inc. website, and are subject to change. The information in the Comics Guide comes not only from Diamond but from solicitations, press releases and previews released by the publishers, except for random comments by Captain Comics (in blue).
BEST BETS
Here art the Captain's top books of the week. For more information on these books and the entire list, continue to "This Week's Comics" below.
KING: JUNGLE JIM #1 (of 4, $3.99, Dynamite): I know next to nothing about the original comic-strip Jungle Jim, and even less about what Dynamite plans to do with the character, who I believe is making his comic-book debut right here. But this series ties in with Dynamite's huge 100th anniversary celebration of King Features Syndicate that includes Flash Gordon, Mandrake the Magician, The Phantom and Prince Valiant, so I'm on board.
IMPERIUM #1 ($3.99, Valiant): Now that decades-long machinations of Toyo Harada have been revealed, the world's most powerful psychic has decided "No more Mr. Nice Guy." If he can't control the world subtly from behind the scenes, he'll do it the hard way -- by gathering the most violent, damaged, crazy and powerful super-powered Harbingers he can find, and use them to get his way. And I can't wait!
LENORE: PINK BELLIES (HC, $17.99, Titan): Lenore is a dead little girl who lives in a scary house in a scary forest. Nevertheless, for all of that, she's pretty chipper. All of her books have tickled me so far, so I bet this one will, too.
THE NAMELESS #1 ($2.99, Image): A new, creator-owned series by Grant Morrison? It'll probably be incomprehensible for months, but that'll be part of the fun!
POSTAL #1 ($3.99, Image): Eden, Wyoming, looks like a typical Western town. But it has a secret: It's a hiding place for America's most wanted criminals, where nobody knows who anybody else really is. It's perfect, until some idiot commits a murder ... and the FBI comes calling.
That sounds superficially like Nailbiter, which posits an Oregon town that creates serial killers. They're really not very much alike ... but I wouldn't mind a crossover!
RETURN OF THE LIVING DEADPOOL #1 (of 4, $3.99, Marvel): In a parody of the currently popular zombie apocalypse genre, Deadpool is the only person on earth who can survive a zombie bite. More than that, when a zombie bites him, it turns into a duplicate Deadpool, with each manifesting a different aspect of Wade Wilson's scattershot personality. Now, c'mon -- that sounds like a hoot, doesn't it?

THE GOON: ONCE UPON A HARD TIME #1 (OF 4)
Variant: ERIC POWELL
FC, 32 pages, $3.50
Miniseries
After the tragic events of Occasion of Revenge, the witch coven believes that control of the unnamed town will soon be in their grasp and the Goon’s tragic soul will contribute to the curse that increases their power. But has their plot destroyed the Goon or created a monster too savage for them to withstand?
Once upon a Hard Time is a climactic miniseries that has major consequences for the Goon and his supporting cast. If you’re a Goon fan, you can’t miss this.
Praise for THE GOON:
“A whopping mess of fisticuffs, sharp dialogue and well-paced narrative that can move from touching to terrifying at the drop of a hat. ... Well worth your time and money, The Goon: Occasion of Revenge is a visual and emotional stunner.” -- USA TODAY
“Abounds with irreverent humor, stylized fisticuffs and viscerally creepy monsters.” -- PASTE MAGAZINE
“The Goon sits side-by-side with other long-running, auteur comics like Hellboy, Usagi Yojimbo and even Cerebus.” -- COMICBOOK.COM
“This book will tear your heart out, and then pack your chest cavity full of violent retribution!” -- FREAK SUGAR
“A wild ride filled with imagination, intrigue, horror and laughs.” -- Ain’t It Cool News
“The Goon is old-school cool -- a great, gurgling gumbo of EC Comics horror, Monty Python wit and 1930s pulp.” -- Entertainment Weekly
“A true American original -- a delirious medley of strange characters, stranger creatures, wild-ass (and often truly creepy) storytelling, art so excellent and perfectly matched to the tone of his stories as to be flabbergasting, and writing so hilarious that it sometimes comes close to making me pee my pants.” -- Frank Darabont, director
“The product of a contentedly demented mind.” -- Comic Book Resources
“The Goon has earned [Powell] a seat at the table with Kirby, Eisner, Chester Gould, Hal Foster and Al Feldstein.” -- Joe Hill (Locke & Key)
“Eric Powell’s great series The Goon deftly combines lowbrow humor with unexpected emotional depth in its ongoing story of a big, not-so-dumb guy who does battle with zombies in a town seemingly dreamt up by Tom Waits.” -- The A.V. Club
“Eric Powell has created a sharp, witty little monster comic with a very interesting mystery at its heart. And Eric can draw as well as anyone in the business. When zombies are overrunning the city, there’s only one man tough enough to keep the undead in line: Eric Powell’s THE GOON.” -- Jeff Smith (creator of Bone)
“Every panel [is] gorgeously detailed, like a Max Fleischer cartoon if Cthulhu spat some sort of hellish bile all over it.” -- IGN
“There’s a certain joy knowing that a cartoonist of great skill is filling his or her own comic with the elements they love. ... The appeal is how Powell conveys that enthusiasm by drawing every creature and monster so darned well.” -- Publishers Weekly
“If this is your first time [reading The Goon], you are in for a treat -- if not, you already know how lucky you are.” -- David Fincher, director
“Tremendously entertaining ... a highly enjoyable blend of pulp horror and slapstick comedy.” -- Fangoria
“Bursts with fisticuffs, gore, bad attitude and running character gags. ... Prime ghastly fun.” -- Booklist
“A comic for readers who like a generous helping of comedy with their hordes of zombies.” -- New York Daily News
“Comicdom’s new hero is a fighting machine with a curious affinity for kicking serious ghoul butt. We hear the Hulk’s green with envy.” -- Entertainment Weekly
“Powell’s story is sweet when it needs to be, warm and touching when it wants to be, and brutal and gruesome when it has to be.” -- Bloody Disgusting
“There is no match for this comic in look or content.” -- Comic Bastards
“There aren’t many characters like The Goon in comics and there aren’t many creators as unique and enjoyable as Eric Powell.” -- IGN

“Lady Killer is a killer cool book with one of my favorite artist/writer teams at the top of their game. It’s an exciting and unique take on the whole midcentury-modern vibe, with one great surprise after another! And the colors are really nifty too!” -- Mike Allred
“Spellbinding.” -- Powell’s Books

Lord Marmaduke Ffogg has come to Gotham City, and he’s brought a bit of old Londinium with him. Specifically, some of that city’s famous fog! But this is no normal fog. His malicious mist may just find the entire populace saying “Gor Blimey!” Can Batman and Robin see their way clear to stop this cloudy culprit in time, or will the city swing like a pendulum, too?
If this feels familiar, the Dynamic Duo (and Batgirl!) visited "Londinium" in a 1967 Batman episode, "The Londinium Larcenies."
And despite the fact that Batman, Robin and Batgirl showed up shortly after Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon arrived, and no one ever saw the two trios together, no one suspected their secret.

Writers Matt Hawkins (THINK TANK) and Bryan Hill (Broken Trinity: Pandora’s Box) and Top Cow’s Talent Hunt winning artist Isaac Goodhart team up for a crime thriller that will keep readers guessing and coming back each issue for more in Top Cow’s POSTAL. In a small sleepy town full of fugitives in hiding, who would risk exposure to the authorities by committing the town’s first murder in decades? And how will the FBI exploit one individual’s weakness in order to get the evidence they need?
The town of Eden, Wyoming, operates as a haven for the worst criminals at-large, seedy characters who remain in town only long enough for new identities -- often including facial reconstruction -- to be created for them. There is zero tolerance for any illegal activity that might draw attention to the town and an “official murder” is the last thing they want. A single, tight-knit family runs Eden, with the youngest oddball son Mark Shiffron overseeing the postal branch, the only means of shipping in or out of the city. Although the FBI’s attempts to insert an undercover agent in the town have been repeatedly foiled, this murder gives them a new opportunity.
"Postal is essentially WitSec for criminals,” said Hawkins. “It's about a remote town that creates new identities for them so they can avoid prosecution. Working with Bryan Edward Hill and Talent Hunt winner Isaac Goodhart on this first volume so I know it will be top notch!"

STRAY BULLETS CONTINUES WITH THE BEGINNING OF A BRAND-NEW ARC OF STORIES!
Award-winning creator David Lapham begins an all-new story arc in the cult classic series STRAY BULLETS with SUNSHINE & ROSES. The new story will center around violence, love, and the bad decisions made when characters find themselves in over their heads and ensnared in seedy, illegal dealings. The new arc launches on January 21 and follows up the staggering return to form by Lapham in STRAY BULLETS: KILLERS.
In STRAY BULLETS: SUNSHINE & ROSES, the Baltimore underworld is falling apart at the seams and blood has been spilt. Where and when things went to hell in a handbasket can be traced back to a time a few years earlier, when a man named Harry ran the city, Spanish Scott and Monster enforced the rules, and an insecure young man name Orson met a wild and crazy girl named Beth. The two together cooked up the boldest, most outlandish, and just about the stupidest plan ever devised—a plan to steal a whole lot of Harry’s money and drugs and exact a little revenge along the way.
"We were torn for a long time on whether to ever go back and tell this story, but the lure of getting Beth, Orson, and Nina together again was just too strong,” said Lapham. “They demanded it, really. It's going to be off-the-hook nuts.”
While every issue of STRAY BULLETS presents a complete story, the start of each new arc is the perfect place to jump on board and see what everybody else is talking about.

IN 3 MONTHS … TIME RUNS OUT!
When I first saw this cover months ago, I wondered what it meant that they were essentially reprinting the cover to The Ultimates #1. Of course, now the cat's out of the bag, and we know exactly what it means.
I also assumed the "Time runs out" tag on lots of Avengers books meant that the temporal problems exacerbated by Wolverine and Sue Storm tromping through the timestream during "Age of Ultron" was going to have the long-foreshadowed repercussions. (Or has that story already happened?) But no, it's an entirely different storyline, in which the time the Illuminati had to stop the "incursions" has run out.
Different thing. But still the end of the world!

Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. What would you give up in your quest for power? What if it cost you your very soul? This February, those questions and more will be answered in Guardians of the Galaxy & X-Men: The Black Vortex Alpha #1, the first chapter in an epic, out of this world crossover through Guardians of the Galaxy, All-New X-Men, Legendary Star-Lord, Cyclops, Captain Marvel, Nova and Guardians Team-Up! From superstar creators Sam Humphries, Ed McGuinness and Kris Anka comes the opening salvo in an epic cosmic war!
The Black Vortex – an ancient and powerful artifact has been uncovered in the far reaches of the cosmos. With the power to grant its user untold, it is coveted by some of the most nefarious forces in the galaxy. Thane and the villainous Mr. Knife plan to use its power to unleash terror upon the galaxy, and only a small band of heroes stand in their way.
“What happens when one person submits to the Black Vortex and becomes a titan of the cosmos? What happens when a whole team does it? Or a whole planet?” says Guardians of the Galaxy & X-Men: The Black Vortex Alpha #1 writer Sam Humphries in an interview with Marvel.com. “Imagine the metamorphosis that turned Norin Radd into the Silver Surfer, or Jean Grey into Dark Phoenix, available to anyone in the Marvel Universe.”
“But of course, no amount of power comes without a cost,” Humphries continued.
Now, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the X-Men, Nova, Captain Marvel and more must unite as one or face extinction. Because if they fail, billions will die. But even they may be seduced by the power of the Black Vortex. Are they going to save the universe? Or will they be its undoing? Find out as the
Billions of lives are at stake, the heroes of the Marvel Universe will have to face the darkness inside themselves if they hope to succeed. But will they be the ones to save the galaxy, or will they be seduced by the Black Vortex’s power?
This looks pretty interesting, but with everything going into a mixmaster in a few months, it's hard to get invested emotionally in any Marvel book. I may read this series later in trade, but I think I'll wait until Secret Wars is over and I know which characters are still viable.

Fan-favorite writer Cullen Bunn and newcomer artist Nik Virella take you to a world overrun by undead Deadpools!
To “cure” the horror of a zombie outbreak, the Merc With a Mouth used his own healing factor to save the day. Any zombie that ate Deadpool transformed…into another Deadpool!
“So there are thousands of Deadpools, all of them originating from the one and only Wade Wilson,” says Bunn in an interview with Marvel.com. “Every time a zombie takes a bite out of one of these Deadpools, the zombie becomes Deadpool. But the ‘copy’ is degrading from rebirth to rebirth. You know how Deadpool has numerous personalities? Well, these newly created Deadpools start to latch onto different aspects of Deadpool’s split psyche, forming factions. And these factions don’t all get along!”
As hordes of Deadpools battle for undead supremacy against the zombie hordes, witness a world gone completely insane! Time to find out what’s worse – an army of flesh eating corpses, or an army of wisecracking Deadpools. You decide this January in RETURN OF THE LIVING DEADPOOL #1!

In the trenches of World War I, a new kind of superhuman was born.

Now, in 1938, on the eve of War, they have risen to take control of the capital cities of Europe.
Above the law, above human authority, these strange metahumans capture the imaginations of the public even as they baffle scientists with their impossible powers. The battles between them are titanic, legendary and larger than life.
But a new, even more powerful threat is looming, one that could yet erase them from existence and shift the balance of power, as Europe becomes a battleground for different political and ideological factions. It is a time that tests allegiances and forges new alliances.
This is how the superhumans of Europe were born … and this is how they died.

Chaos never looked so cute in the form of our favourite little undead girl!
All four parts of the 'Who Will Die' storyline are collected together for the first time in this, the sixth Lenore collection.
In a storyline that has been building for over a year, Roman Dirge, the so-called ‘Arch-Deacon of the Macabre’ has been slowly ratcheting up the tension and silliness in a story arc that will see one of his most beloved characters pushing up the daisies -- FOR GOOD, we kid you not..!
NO, seriously. This isn't one of those dead for a year kind of deals other publishers do - this is the real deal. DEFO dead! Deader than a door nail kind of dead. The sort of dead that leaves the reader gasping in stunned amazement at the sheer audacity of the thing. Seriously, as god is my witness someone's dying or my name isn't Ferdinand Marco De Boing Boing III.
It's going to change the way we see dead people in comic books for all time!

A psychic dictator, an inhuman robot, a mad scientist, a murderous alien and a super-powered terrorist are about to try and take over the world … and you’re going to be rooting for them every step of the way.
Valiant is proud to present the first look inside IMPERIUM #1 – the FIRST ISSUE of the all-new VALIANT NEXT ongoing series from New York Times best-selling writer Joshua Dysart (Harbinger, Unknown Soldier) and superstar artist Doug Braithwaite (Armor Hunters, Unity)! The daring new superhero saga of the year starts here on Feb. 4 as Toyo Harada rises from the ashes of the Harbinger Foundation to recruit a more explosive … more cunning … more ruthless army to remake the future of Earth in their own image. This is IMPERIUM!
Toyo Harada is the most dangerous human being on the planet. Imbued with incredible powers of the mind, he has spent his life guiding humanity from the shadows. But today he is a wanted man. His powers are public knowledge, his allies have turned to enemies, and he is hunted by every government on the planet. Instead of surrendering, Harada has one last unthinkable gambit to play: to achieve more, faster, and with less, he will build a coalition of the powerful, the unscrupulous and the insane. No longer content to demand a better future, he will recruit a violent legion from the darkest corners of the Earth to fight for it. The battle for utopia begins now.
"This is a real chance for us to play around with some super-villain tropes the same way we played with super-hero tropes in Harbinger," said writer Joshua Dysart. "This time the tropes we're playing with are an 'evil alien,' a 'robot soldier,' a 'mad scientist,' a 'political extremist' (the most terrifying of all monsters), and, of course, a 'global dictator' bent on taking over the world. So all of that breeds new fun characters to throw into the Valiant Universe."
"IMPERIUM is unlike every other book Valiant has ever published before, and this exclusive prelude story is a great chance to find out why," said Valiant CEO & Chief Creative Officer Dinesh Shamdasani. "Joshua and Doug are doing phenomenal work, and, together, they are about to unleash a politically charged series with global stakes and what are sure to be some of the most compelling characters anywhere in comics today."
Featuring three standard shelf covers introducing the vanguard of IMPERIUM's ultra-powered ideologues – commander Toyo Harada, the alien powerhouse Lord Vine-99 and the manipulative artificial intelligence Mech Major – start reading here as the global takeover begins.
