COMICS GUIDE FOR JAN. 14, 2015
Titles listed in the Comics Guide come from the weekly list at the Diamond Comic Distributors Inc. website, and are subject to change. The information in the Comics Guide comes not only from Diamond but from solicitations, press releases and previews released by the publishers, except for random comments by Captain Comics (in blue).
Here are Captain Comics' suggestions for this week. For more information on these and other titles, continue to the "This Week's Comics" section below.
CONAN/RED SONJA #1 ($3.99, Dark Horse): These two iconic characters have met before, but not when Gail SImone was writing the titian-haired tigress. I expect both characters will get their due, which means a big adventure.
HENSHIN ($19.99, Image Comics): Henshin means "transformation" in Japanese, and this collection of short stories by acclaimed artist Ken Nimura gives us a lot of that!
STAR WARS #1 ($3.99, Marvel Comics): Marvel re-launches the Star Wars line. 'Nuff said!
VAMPIRELLA #100 ($7.99, Dynamite): Congrats to Vampi for hitting the century mark -- and that's just at Dynamite! Here's a 48-pager to celebrate.
Titles are grouped alphabetically by publisher, in this order:
Archie Comics, Dark Horse Comics, DC Comics, Dynamite Entertainment, IDW Publishing, Image Comics, Marvel Comics, Valiant Comics and the catch-all Other Publishers.

Doctor Solar faces a clever new nemesis named King Cybernoid, terrors from other dimensions and electric aliens from Mars! • Featuring a foreword by Batton Lash (Supernatural Law)!
• Classic adventures by Ernie Colón, Dick Wood and others!
Don Glut, who created Dr. Spektor and was writing the bulk of the Gold Key adventure comics toward the end, says the publisher's editors were four-square against establishing a "Gold Key universe." Despite all evidence to the contrary -- such as Marvel's success -- Gold Key management held to the 1950s view that comics were bought by kids who wanted simple, done-in-one issues, and that readership turned over every three years or so. The Solar cameo in Dr. Spektor included in this book was just about the only time Gold Key heroes teamed up in the '70s, outside of the comics I drew as a kid!

With legions of Parademons on the attack, Constantine forges an alliance with Doctor Fate. But as time begins to run out, will they escape Earth-2 – or help destroy it?
I'm enjoying this, but isn't the end NOT in question? We know from Future's End that Earth-2 and Earth New 52 go to war, with Earth-2's surviving superheroes (including Dr. Fate) locked up by ARGUS. And the title of the book Earth-2: World's End (below) is kind of a giveaway as well.
As I said, I'm enjoying this long-form end-of-the-world story, plus it gives Apokolips some cred for being bad enough to take out an Earth defended by Justice League-level heroes. But are we really supposed to pretend we don't know how it ends?

Ken Niimura, artist on the acclaimed and award-winning graphic novel I KILL GIANTS (written by Joe Kelly), returns with HENSHIN. The short stories of HENSHIN present a unique vision of Japanese life, presented in English for the first time by Image Comics in January.
“Henshin” means "transformation" in Japanese, and in all 13 stories, Niimura shows how choices and events — whether momentous or seemingly insignificant — can change the lives of his protagonists.
“A transformation or a change is the most basic premise for a story,” said Niimura. “That's why Henshin is about people in the process of change. I also chose this title hoping that I would also change for the better in the process of creation and improve my craft.”
Niimura’s imaginative storytelling finds its way into the emotional lives of his characters, from a kid with peculiar powers to a lonely girl finding her way in the big city to a salaryman out on the town.
“Henshin is similar to a restaurant,” Niimura said of the collection. “I selected the ingredients for these stories from all the things I saw during my life in 2013 in Tokyo. I've tried to keep the natural flavor of each of these ingredients, sometimes adding some spices when needed. I hope you like the resulting menu, somewhere between comical, moving and fun.”
F0r readers who can’t wait to sample Niimura’s graphic feast, the entirety of one of HENSHIN’s stories, “Victory Sign,” is available to download.
HENSHIN is a Japanese-format graphic novel, which reads right-to-left.

THE ONCE AND FUTURE JUGGERNAUT 1 of 4
• We’ve all heard the phrase “those are big shoes to fill.”
• That’s especially true when those are the massive boots of the unstoppable Juggernaut.
• So when the Gem of Cyttorak reappears, the X-Men must ask themselves: Who’s going to wear those boots?
The fledgling team of the Amazing X-Men have already faced off against demon arms from Hell and ravenous hordes of Wendigos and there is no rest in sight for our band of heroic mutants as one of the X-Men’s most notorious villains charges back into their world. This January marks the return of The Unstoppable Juggernaut within Amazing X-Men #15 by series writer, Chris Yost and interior artist Jorge Fornes.
The story, called “The Once and Future Juggernaut” finds former wielders of the Gem of Cyttorak, Cain Marko and X-Man Peter “Colossus” Rasputin, getting the call to become the inter-dimensional power’s external force once again, but they’re not the only ones invited to the party.
While Yost remains tight-lipped about who those other characters might be he does give a few hints about what kinds of folks are being called. “A few of the strongest characters in the Marvel Universe get the call,” Yost tells Marvel.com. “But Cyttorak needs a specific kind of person … someone they can manipulate. Someone who craves the power.”
“Cyttorak wants an avatar,” Yost continues. “It’s a status thing among the other mystical entities/gods. All the cool other-dimensional powers have one. The return of the gem is part of the mystery, but the X-Men know that whatever Cyttorak wants, it’s probably not good."

THE GREATEST SPACE ADVENTURE OF ALL TIME RETURNS TO MARVEL!
Taking place immediately after the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, the Force returns to Marvel in January with three new series spotlighting beloved characters from the iconic trilogy! Created in close partnership with Lucasfilm, the three new Star Wars series will exist as part of the canon for the Star Wars universe!
Luke Skywalker and the ragtag band of rebels fighting against the Galactic Empire are fresh off their biggest victory yet -- the destruction of the massive battle station known as the Death Star. But the Empire’s not toppled yet! Join Luke along with Princess Leia, smugglers Han Solo and Chewbacca, droids C-3PO and R2-D2 and the rest of the Rebel Alliance as they strike out for freedom against the evil forces of Darth Vader and his master, the Emperor. Written by Jason Aaron (Original Sin, Thor: God of Thunder) and with art by John Cassaday (Astonishing X-Men, Uncanny Avengers), this is the Star Wars saga as only Marvel Comics could make it!
Discussing the flagship series, writer Jason Aaron tells Marvel.com, “Every story is about the characters, and we'll focus on all the old favorites. There will be big moments for everyone, from Han to R2-D2. But a major part of the narrative will be driven by Luke Skywalker and his journey of discovery, a journey that will decide the fate of the entire galaxy.”
“We couldn’t be happier to have Star Wars comics back at Marvel,” says Marvel SVP Sales & Marketing David Gabriel. “Star Wars has always been an important part of Marvel’s history and we knew we wanted to honor that legacy with a callback to the original Marvel Comics Star Wars series. We think old and new fans alike will be just as excited as we are to see Jaxxon, even if it’s only for this fun variant cover.”
“If you’re not excited for Star Wars right now, you must be living under a rock!” says Star Wars Editor Jordan D. White. “All anyone is talking about is that awesome teaser...and it’s still a whole year before the movie comes out! Fortunately, we’ve been working overtime to bring you all-new adventures of the original Star Wars gang to satisfy everyone’s hunger for space adventure! Jason Aaron, Kieron Gillen, Mark Waid -- these are some of the best writers in the comics industry, and they are sparing no expense to craft stories that live up to the classic series with the same feel and tone of the original. Combine them with the amazing artwork of John Cassaday, Salvador Larroca, and Terry Dodson -- each one a serious Star Wars fan themselves -- and trust me ... these comics will be everything you could want from a Star Wars series.”
Marvel Entertainment and Lucasfilm Ltd. are extremely proud to unveil artist John Tyler Christopher’s STAR WARS #1 Party Variant – featuring none other than the return of Jaxxon! Only available at Star Wars #1 Launch Parties, don’t miss your chance to get your hands on this one-of-a-kind variant cover to one of the biggest issues of the year!

In 1977 a phenomenon dawned. Marvel Comics published the very first STAR WARS comic-book series. Now, the House of Ideas is re-presenting those original adventures in its over-sized Omnibus format -- STAR WARS: THE ORIGINAL MARVEL YEARS collecting STAR WARS (1977) #1-44 and ANNUAL #1.
It’s the return of the Jedi to Marvel in an opening volume that begins with Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope and ends with Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. In between, the rebels face a wealth of new perils — from space pirate Crimson Jack to the bounty hunter Beilert Valance, as well as a surprisingly svelte Jabba the Hut (one “t”). Luke goes back to Tatooine, Leia battles alone, Han and Chewie play the deadly Big Game, and Darth Vader hunts for answers! Revisit all your old favorites and discover some new ones!
There’s no doubt, the Force is strong with this collection!

The Crossed universe is an unyielding nightmare vision of animal depravity and homicidal insanity. In this volume, two of the industry's best new talents come together to tell very different stories of despair. Simon Spurrier takes you to a picturesque environment in the English countryside with tweeting birds, friendly vicars, crumpets and jam, and a mob of Crossed lurking near the duck pond. No one sees Wheezy the fat asthmatic kid hiding up in the old tower but if he shows his face it will only be the farmer's wife between him and a bloody fate. The problem is, she's Crossed too. And newly-Crossed Justin Jordan tells his first diabolical tale as two women attempt to escape the band of monsters out for their blood. When a mysterious unseen Samaritan helps them escape to a sanctuary it seems as though they've found what little safety there is in the new world order. But trusting anyone in the world of Crossed usually leads to a gut-wrenching and miserable end. Crossed Vol 11 TP collects Crossed 2014 Annual and issues #57 - 61 of the ongoing Crossed: Badlands comic book series.

MICHAEL JORDAN: BULL ON PARADE (HC)
Writer/Art/Cover: WILFRED SANTIAGO
$24.99 | 200 Pages | Full Color
You've all heard the stories, and now, in Bull on Parade, Wilfred Santiago shows you the man behind the legend. A follow up to 21: The Story of Roberto Clemente, award-winning cartoonist Santiago delivers the story of the greatest athlete of all time, as only he can.
With each painstakingly painted panel, Bull on Parade gives Jordan, and basketball, the graphic novel they truly deserve.
Kinetic and visceral, a biography of this magnitude has never been done. From his sometimes scandalous and tragic private life to Jordan's intense battles with the "bad boy" Pistons, Clyde Drexler's Trailblazers, and the unrelenting Utah Jazz of the late '90s, Santiago is able to induce a sense of dynamism and awe as he takes on Jordan's life on and off the court.
For all those who have strapped on a pair of Air Jordans, donned the number 23, or wished they could be "like Mike."
Sit back, let your tongue hang out, and marvel at Wilfred Santiago's mastery of the life and times of Michael Jordan in Bull on Parade.
