ANT-MAN #1 ($3.99, Marvel Comics): Ant-Man is one of those concepts that Marvel has never been able to get off the ground. It failed with Hank Pym under the helmet; it failed when Scott Lang tried it; it failed when the last guy stole the suit and became "irredeemable" (I've even forgotten his name). But they're going back to the well again, once again with Scott Lang, probably the least interesting of the three. So my first instinct is to assume that this Ant-title will fail as have all the others, and probably pretty quickly. But that was before Marvel Films proved it could make any concept make bajillions of dollars (See: Guardians of the Galaxy), and they've got Ant-Man in the on-deck circle, so maybe that will make all the difference.
LADY KILLER #1 (of 5, Dark Horse, $3.50): The suburban mom or dad that's secretly a drug dealer, mob hitman or serial killer has become a cliche. As I joked about the last book where a suburban parent was secretly a hitman, it's getting hard to find suburban families in comics that are just suburban families. But the cover of this suburban mom-is-secretly-a-serial-killer hits the right note of black humor, it's got a '60 vibe we older fans will find familiar and the book is mercifully a miniseries, so it will have a beginning, middle and end. It could be a fun ride.
SUNGLASSES AFTER DARK ($29.99, IDW Publications): Nancy Collins made her bones with the 1990s punk-vampire thriller Sunglasses After Dark. The comic-book adaptation didn't get much circulation, so IDW has resurrected it so we non-novel-reading comics fans can see what the fuss was about.
UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL-GIRL ($3.99, Marvel): It's impossible not to be charmed by this utterly upbeat, unaffected, tongue-in-cheek superheroine. And it's about time she got her own book!
WOLVERINES #1 ($3.99, Marvel): Not being a rabid Wolverine fan, and growing up reading the pre-Wolverine Marvel Universe, I have a different perspective than younger fans of Wolverine's importance and an outsider's view of the "Death of Wolverine" brouhaha. And I have to say, this widespread acceptance by the readers of a mass murderer as Marvel's most beloved character strikes me as pretty freaking odd. Heck, Wolverine wasn't even particularly popular in-story for a very long time. But now the entire MU is in bitter mourning over his loss, to the extent that several of his enemies are going to pick up his standard and carry it forward. Frankly, I find it all pretty preposterous (and from a moral position, somewhat grotesque). But, OK, the premise of this weekly series -- Marvel's first -- is that Mystique, Lady Deathstrike, X-23, Sabretooth and the formerly dead Daken are going to be pseudo-Wolverines to take poor Logan's place. (Sabretooth is even going to join the Avengers!) It's clearly not for me, but if you're a Wolverine fan, this should be catnip for you. Or wolver-nip. Whatever.

Vampires are part of today’s popular culture but in the 1990s, they were underground. And that is exactly where Sonja Blue, the protagonist of Nancy A. Collins’ (Vampirella, Swamp Thing) comic book series, Sunglasses After Dark, hunts for the monster responsible for making her one. IDW Publishing is proud to be collecting the cult-classic miniseries for the first time in a fully remastered graphic novel due this November.
“I am thrilled to finally see Sunglasses After Dark collected as a graphic novel,” said Collins. “The road was long, but the end result is something I am proud of. My collaborator, Stan Shaw, has outdone himself as both artist and colorist. I think fans of Sonja Blue will be pleased. ”
Acknowledged as one of the first Urban Fantasy novels, Sunglasses After Dark burst onto the fantasy/horror scene in 1989, garnering widespread critical praise and winning the Horror Writers Association’s coveted Bram Stoker Award. Together with artist Shaw, Collins adapted the novel into a six-and-a-half-issue comic book miniseries, which became an instant cult classic. The IDW collected edition will be digitally re-colored by series artist Shaw, completely re-lettered by Eisner and Harvey Award winning letterer Thomas Mauer, and features re-tweaked dialog and narration by Collins herself.
The story begins in a madhouse and goes on to reveal the mystery behind the disappearance of a nightclubbing heiress and her transformation into a tough-as-nails punk vampire/vampire-slayer. Sonja Blue is a “living” vampire who still possesses a soul, and is determined to fight for what remains of her humanity, while still seeking bloody revenge against the vampire who attacked her. But as dangerous as hunting down vampires may be, it is nothing compared to her greatest foe: The Other -- the demonic alter ego with which she is locked in constant battle for the body they both share.
If you like your vampires with a bit of grit and a side of punk, this is the one for you. The full-color, 212-page hardcover is coming for you in November.

TOOTH & CLAW #1 (2ND PTG)
Art: BEN DEWEY
32 PAGES / FC / $2.99
The first issue of the richly written and drawn fantasy TOOTH & CLAW will go back to print, but under a new title: THE AUTUMNLANDS. The bombshell launch by bestselling writer Kurt Busiek (Marvels, Astro City), artist Benjamin Dewey (I Was the Cat, Tragedy Series), Eisner-winning colorist Jordie Bellaire (THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS, PRETTY DEADLY), and letterer John Roshell of Comicraft will also boast an alternate cover on issue three by artist superstar Skottie Young (Rocket Raccoon, Wizard of Oz).
"The launch of our new series has gone beautifully," said Busiek. "We couldn't be happier. Well, maybe just a little happier. I'm still not sure how we managed to screw up the trademark search. But as it turns out, the title we thought was clear for use is in fact registered to someone else, which is embarrassing as all hell. Oops.
"So as of #2, the book will be titled The Autumnlands: Tooth & Claw," he went on, "and we'll do our best to make sure people won't miss it on the racks, or think it's some wholly different series. As you'll see, we did make sure the logo will still be recognizable to the readers who snapped up #1.
"We're also thrilled that #1 sold through as fast as it did, because that means a new printing," said Busiek. "Retailers have been asking me since #1 sold out how soon a new printing would be available, and I'm very pleased to be able to say it's on the way. Plus, it'll have the new logo on it, so that gets us the right title on the book, even on a printing of #1.
"Plus," Busiek added, "the idea of the 'autumnlands' is central to how the series works and is going to progress. Now readers can get a jump on figuring out just what that means..."
Best described as Conan meets Kamandi with a Game of Thrones-style storytelling experience, Comic Book Resources says of THE AUTUMNLANDS, “each panel is worth the cover price all by itself, but combined this is a comic book that simply cannot be missed,” while Multiversity Comics raves, “This is the beauty of creativity and collaborative storytelling.”
In THE AUTUMNLANDS, a secret conclave of wizards brings a legendary champion forward through time from the forgotten past to save the world—with disastrous consequences. The story features swords, sorcery, beast-wizards, gods, sprawling animal empires, golems of radioactive decay, crystalline badlands, con women, ancient armories, young love, mystery, blood and death and treachery and destiny.
In the AUTUMNLANDS: TOOTH & CLAW #3, readers will meet Goodfoot the Sly. But is she really here to help the wizards ... or herself?

• It was supposed to be a straightforward mission for the team: go into a foreign country at war with its neighbor, discover the tunnels that the enemy had created and get rid of them.
• Unfortunately things have gone extremely wrong and now a vengeful Egyptian goddess has been set free, and the first people she’s targeting are X-Factor.
If I were to point to a reason for this book being axed, it would be the ugly covers. No offense to the professionals who no doubt put great effort into them, but the angular, cartoony style and the emphasis on tertiary colors made them all look alike -- and all unattractive.

The Marvel Universe’s smallest super hero is ready for the big time as Scott Lang takes center stage in ANT-MAN #1, the new red hot ongoing series launching as part of Avengers NOW! Critically acclaimed creators Nick Spencer (Superior Foes of Spider-Man, Avengers World) and Ramon Rosanas (Night of the Living Deadpool) prepare to take Scott Lang to new heights and microscopic depths for new adventures and new dangers!
Scott Lang has never been the world’s best super hero. Heck, most people don’t even think he’s been the best Ant-Man – and the last guy created Ultron and joined the Masters of Evil, so that’s really saying something. But all that’s about to change when the Superior Iron Man calls up Scott with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! This is his chance to turn it all around. New city. New outlook. New Scott. Nothing is going to stop the astonishing Ant-Man! You know, until something ruins it all. Don’t miss the blockbuster first chapter in his new ongoing series when ANT-MAN #1 hits comic shops this January!
“For Scott, being Ant-Man is kind of his one big thing,” says writer Nick Spencer, in an interview with Marvel.com. “No matter how much trouble it’s caused him, or how much it’s cost him, it’s still the thing that plucked him out of criminal obscurity and gave him a chance to be something. And when we open, he’s trying to spin it into something new. He sees an opportunity.”
This is Scott Lang’s chance to turn it all around and be the hero he’s always wanted to be. Sure he’s been to prison! Sure he’s been through a messy divorce! Sure he’s been, um … dead. But this time it’s going to be different. New city. New outlook. New Scott. This time, nothing is going to stop the astonishing Ant-Man! And he’s coming to comic shops and digital devices this January for the all-new ANT-MAN #1!
Plus, Marvel is proud to present your first look at the exclusive Ant-Man #1 Shrinking Variant – available only in comic shops!
From blockbuster artist Ed McGuinness, each Ant-Man #1 Shrinking Variant is completely unique. Individually numbered, each cover features Ant-Man at a different size – small, large and everything in between. Fans lucky enough to get their hands on this highly collectable variant cover will own a unique piece of history, as no two variants are alike!
“This is completely unlike any cover we’ve ever attempted,” says Marvel SVP Sales & Marketing David Gabriel. “We’ve even had to utilize new technologies to make it happen. Each variant is completely unique. Each and every cover will feature a different sized Ant-Man. No two are identical!”
I've read somewhere that Scott's daughter, who was the superhero Stature, is coming back from the dead. But I see no mention of her here, so I guess she won't be part of the supporting cast. Which is probably a wise call, since she's more interesting!

Following the attention of Marvel’s anti-bullying variant covers, Marvel is proud to combat the growing epidemic of bullying with an all-new one-shot comic book, Avengers: No More Bullying #1. Featuring original stories by fan-favorite author Gerry Duggan (Deadpool, Nova), rising star Sean Ryan (Uncanny X-Men and Iron Man Specials) and Jody Houser in her first-ever Marvel story! With artwork by Carlo Barberi (Thunderbolts) and Tana Ford (New Warriors) and Marcio Takara (Captain Marvel), and covers by Paul Renaud featuring Spider-Man and Pascal Campion featuring The Avengers.
In Avengers: No More Bullying, the Earth’s mightiest heroes, The Avengers, have a new and vital mission -- to make bullying a thing of the past! Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, Captain Marvel, and more have always stood up for those who cannot stand up for themselves, but this time they’re in for a bombastic adventure of the highest order! Featuring surprise guest stars from across the Marvel Universe including Spider-Man and The Guardians of the Galaxy!
“From Peter Parker, Midtown High’s only professional wallflower, to the ever-misunderstood Kamala Khan, Marvel has a proud history of working to raise awareness about bullying and representing its victims as much as possible,” says series editor Devin Lewis. “Bullying is a problem that can affect everyone in a community, and it’s up to that very community to come together to combat it, and, with this issue, Marvel’s Avengers, Spider-Man, and Guardians of the Galaxy are joining the fight! I know how comic books can help ease that feeling of isolation, and I couldn’t be more proud or excited about the talent we’ve pulled together for this project!”
Avengers: No More Bullying #1 will be available in January within local comic book retailers and digitally through Marvel.com and the Marvel Comics App.
I don't doubt that everyone's heart is in the right place on this project, but I think a book a like this is preaching to the choir. Kids who read comics aren't the ones who need the lecture -- they're the ones getting bullied.

His death was only the start! Wolverine may be dead, but his legacy lives on. Spinning directly out of Death of Wolverine, The Weapon X Program and The Logan Legacy comes WOLVERINES #1, a brand new weekly series beginning this January! The friends and foes he left behind unite as they seek to uncover the secrets behind Logan’s death and issue a healthy dose of revenge on those involved in his demise. Announced at NYCC, blockbuster writers Charles Soule and Ray Fawkes team with Marvel All-New Young Gun artist Nick Bradshaw for the weekly journeys of X-23, Daken, Sabretooth, Mystique, Lady Deathstrike and more!
Wolverine may be dead, but the weekly journey is just beginning as his mortal remains, now encased in the rare and powerful adamantium, are up for grabs. The battle begins as various factions vie for control of this valuable artifact. But why does it matter so much? And why is a war brewing in Logan’s name?
Death is on the books for a number of Marvel’s heroes and villains, and Mystique is playing chess with them all. X-23, Daken, Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike, the mysterious man known only as Sharp and many, many more!
“In a way, most of the characters featured in [Wolverines] are incomplete reflections of Wolverine,” says co-writer Ray Fawkes in an interview with Marvel.com “Perhaps now that he’s gone, they are free to fully realize themselves? Or maybe they’ll be annihilated by the void that he’s left behind?”
The true enemy is still out there. With Logan dead and buried, they pose a greater threat than ever before. An unlikely team of his closest friends and deadliest foes will need to work together if they have any hope of avenging his death – but how can they? As personalities clash and tempers flare, the claws are going to come out!
“The group here is not a set of people who are particularly interested in doing anything together unless they absolutely have to,” says Charles Soule.
Logan’s end was just the beginning. As those who called him friend mourn his passing, those who called him foe are free to pursue their sinister aims. Now, those with close ties to him will forge an uneasy alliance to uncover the secrets behind the death of one of the world’s greatest heroes, and uncover shocking new revelations concerning the life he led! Be there when a new team is born, and the new year kicks off with a “SNIKT” that shouldn’t be missed in WOLVERINES #1!
