THE CAPTAIN'S COMMENTS
While the big publishers offer their usual avalanche of a books, t's a light week for some publishers. There are no books at all from from Action Lab or Archie, and only one from Valiant. Even "Other Publishers" feels a bit light.
Which is a good thing, because I've been delayed this week by some technical problems, and am running a bit behind. That means no time for recommendations or a ticker -- but there's still plenty of stupid comments!
(Boilerplate: This list is lifted from the Diamond Comic Distributors Inc. website, and is subject to change. Clicking on most images results in a larger image. The Captain's remark are in blue.)
DARK HORSE
Five Dark Horse books that were initially listed earlier in the week as coming out March 26 disappeared off the list before today, so I had to remove them to the "overset" list.* That's not atypical. I'd like to pretend that I have some clever insight about this phenomemon, but really, I just want to complain about how it makes a job that's already labor intensive take that much longer. And I shouldn't pick on DH -- the same was true of IDW, Image and Dynamite. Even Marvel and DC bumped a couple of books this week, which they don't often do. That's hard enough for me -- I can only imagine what it's like for retailers!
(*And then my computer ate them. $@**&*&*##!!)

“If you want a jumping on point, this is it.” -- Comic Vine
“You will not be disappointed.” -- Read Comic Books
I'm not really a fan of Guy Davis' artwork. It's pretty eccentric, and only fits certain projects -- and I honestly don't think B.P.R.D. is one of those. But he's been doing it for so long that it's grown on me, and now I can't really picture anybody else doing the book.
Besides, the concept and writing really carry the book anyway. It's simply a good read.

OUT OF NOWHERE COMES DARK HORSE’S NEWEST HERO!
Scott Travers’s special suit lets him move through our world unseen and untouchable within a shadowy parallel dimension -- but he doesn’t know how the suit works or where it came from. With his benefactor missing and unfriendlies after his Blackout gear, Scott must find answers before the answers find him!
• Story by Frank Barbiere (The White Suits, Five Ghosts).
• Special King Tiger feature by Star Wars stars Randy Stradley and Doug Wheatley!
• Part of Project Black Sky!
• Introduced in the award-winning Dark Horse Presents.
This is part of DH's new superhero line, which will be called "Project Black Sky". It will incorporate existing books Brain Boy, Captain Midnight, Ghost and X, plus several new ones. According to the press releases, the books will play independently, but there's an overarching story that ties them together -- a "universe" concept that DH says is virtually a necessity in today's crowded superhero market.
That's pretty smart, because that's the sort of thing that will induce me (and presumably others like me) to sample virtually the entire line. But to be honest, I'm not very hopeful -- this is DH's third or fourth attempt at a superhero line, and that track record isn't very encouraging.

“Empowered stands as one of the great modern superhero comics.” -- View From The Gutters
I read the first collection of this, and it read like porn to me. I mean, what I imagine porn to read like. Cough. All of the action seems geared toward getting the heroine's clothes off, and occasionally into bed.
And, to quote Seinfeld, there's nothing wrong with that. But that doesn't make it "one of the great modern superhero comics," as the quote above attests. Or, really, a top-tier book of any kind. It's porn. Pretty good porn, I guess, as these things go, but porn nonetheless. I wish it all the success in the world, and for those who enjoy it, happy trails.
But for my part, I'm a little embarrassed to have Empowered Volume 1 on my bookshelf.

After learning about the Last Son of Krypton, a troubled alien travels from a distant galaxy to meet Superman … and to confess the horrible secret that he was Krypton’s Green Lantern.
You know, we've already had at least one story about Krypton's Green Lantern in the Old 52 -- that was pre-Crisis, and I have a vague memory of a different one post-Crisis, but I don't really remember. However many there have been, one salient point defines them: They failed to prevent Krypton's destruction. Here's another GL who failed to stop Krypton's destruction, a New 52 version, but we can already guess one thing about him: He probably feels pretty bad about it.
OTOH, one thing I've always wondered about: Isn't it kind of a good thing that a potential race of universe-conquering Supermen are off the table? I mean, Jor-El and Kal-El are very nice fellows, and we can trust them to use super-powers responsibly. But if Krypton had survived, there would be MILLIONS of potential Supermen, and I imagine some of them might use those super-powers somewhat selfishly, like ... oh, I dunno, conquering the universe. As soon as someone like Gen. Zod figured out he'd get super-powers from yellow solar radiation, he'd zip to such a solar system with a quickness with a bunch of soldiers, and probably work up an artificial version to operate under red suns. Next thing you know, we'd all be kneeling before Zod. (Or dead, collateral damage from Supermen warring over our planet.)
This has been an elephant in the room ever since Daxam was introduced, and DC has tried to moot the question by making Daxamites xenophobic and religiously averse to space travel. But, honestly, does it make sense that not ONE Daxamite was sufficiently greedy or non-religious enough to embark on a super-powered spree? After all, Lar Gand opted for a little space exploration -- is it even remotely possible that he's the ONLY Daxamite with a wanderlust?
Heck, various writers have been unable to keep their hands off that elephant, having various bad guys -- from Darkseid to Glorith -- conquer Daxam and use the populace as a super-powered army. Those armies have always been beaten, but more by writer fiat than anything plausible.
Anyway, Daxam aside, we're probably pretty lucky that Krypton went kablooey. Sorry, Kal and Kara, but we're better off without that gun on the mantlepiece.

When an experimental drilling technique threatens to set the world's largest oil fields ablaze in 1977, Doc Savage is the only one who can prevent an environmental catastrophe and the worldwide economic crisis which would surely follow. But to succeed, he will first have to help a young woman regain her faith in the future.
I'm delighted there is a Doc Savage comic book, and there always should be. I'm never been very interested in the character, but I'm glad he continues to exist.

The original Batman newspaper strips collected for the first time!
Renowned for its Eisner and Harvey Award-winning archival work, IDW’s The Library of American Comics will continue its collaboration with DC Entertainment by collecting the Batman’s Silver Age newspaper strips in a matching format to the Silver Age Superman series!
Hot on the heels of the successful hit Batman television show starring Adam West and Burt Ward that resulted in what can only be described as “Batmania,” the Batman newspaper strips debuted in 1966. Written by longtime Batman editor Whitney Ellsworth, with art by DC Comics giants Shelly Moldoff, Joe Giella, and Carmine Infantino, the newspaper strip was a huge success.
The first volume, reprinting all B&W dailies and color Sundays from 1966 and 1967, features an all-star list of Batman and Robin characters, including Catwoman, the Penguin, the Joker, Poison Ivy, and Batgirl! The 11 x 8.5” hardcover designed and edited by Dean Mullaney will feature a dust jacket cover by Pete Poplaski, and will be 256 pages, including an introduction by Joe Desris.
“Ellsworth and the artists perfectly captured the flavor of the television show,” Mullaney says. ‘It’s a tremendous amount of fun, both as nostalgia and as a unique creation of its time.”
Created in 1939 by Bob Kane, Batman has become an icon, a catalyst, and one of the most revered comic book properties of all time. With countless series, animated television shows, video games, and feature films under his utility belt, Batman perches on the top of American pop culture.
When this PR was originally posted, Legionnaire Emerkeith Davyjack added some pertinent information.
"At some point in the '70s, the strip famously fell into a weird legal limbo, with the syndicate deciding that Bruce Wayne was a non-copyrightable generic character, and making the strip [still] under the "Batman" name -- about Wayne as mentor to an original super-hero named 'Galaxo.' ... Eventually DC quashed this and the 'Galaxo' version [was published] exclusively overseas, I think, with Fran Matera art. Even by the last Bruce strips I think it's possible that the strip was [only] overseas only by then."
Emerkeith then provided a link to some online examples of the "Galaxo" era of the strip, which are truly, amazingly awful: www.imwan.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=66053

IDW Publishing is pleased to announce the January release of the prose novel Calico Horses and the Patchwork Trail by Lorraine Turner.
When the Spirit of Horse speaks to a ten-year-old girl through her dreams and calico patches magically appear as if from nowhere, the residents of Saddlecrest, Nevada have a genuine mystery on their hands.
It's the story of how a girl ripped apart by divorce helps the wild mustangs torn from the range. Together they face uncertainties brought on by the decisions of others.
When Carrie's mom decides to uproot her from their familiar Jersey Shore surroundings to the dusty deserts of Nevada, the move is as prickly to Carrie as the cactus beside her new home. But something mysterious greets her when she closes her eyes each night—like a winding path, her dreams guide her to the horses of the Calico Mountains. Are her developing psychic abilities bringing visits from horse spirits or is her troubled mind playing tricks on her? Her new friend Milla has nightmares of her own—she's the daughter of a government official known as "The Horse Killer."
How can a few children make a difference to the plight of the foals snatched from their homes without warning? Like the tiny patches of cloth that adorn a calico quilt the clues draw them all together. Follow the Calico Horses as they lead us down the trail of adversity to the peaceful pastures found by helping one another.
The genesis of this story was born out of Turner’s experiences as a meditation teacher. The author, who is also the Art Director for the Library of American Comics, began to notice strange and usual images during her daily meditations.
“My twenty-minute tranquility sessions had me seeming to fly over fields covered in calico fabric that morphed into brown withered crops,” says Lorraine Turner, “As the months went by these became more vivid, showing me mountains and horses covered in tiny flowered scraps of fabric. Each meditation gave me more and more bits of information, which eventually led me to the Calico Horses living by the Calico Mountains in Nevada. It was as if my meditations were guiding me to the true story that needed to be told—of wild horses no longer free, much like the children faced with the decisions brought on by parents as they try their best to move forward in life
A portion of all proceeds from this novel will be used to help the horses that are being torn from their freedom. In support of this project, Turner will be offering art/mediation workshops at various horse sanctuaries around the United States. She has also partnered with the Emmy awarding-winning video team she worked with in her days with the NBA to produce an online video trailer (http://youtu.be/9_5g0QbMoOg).
I think this is prose, not comics. But hey, it's from IDW, and girls like horses, so what the heck.

Reprints strips from October 25, 1954–May 13, 1956.
In Volume 16, Chester Gould presents an amazing number of memorable characters: grotesques such as the murderous Rughead and a 467-lb. killer named Oodles, health faddist George Ozone and his wild boys named Neki and Hokey, the despicable "Nothing" Yonson, the amoral teenager Joe Period, and the introduction of nightclub photog-turned policewoman Lizz. Plus for the first time Gould brings back an old villain: Mumbles, who was thought drowned in 1947. And finally, he introduces what may be his most mature story of the 1950s -- starring none other than Flattop Jr.!
If I live long enough, I imagine I'll probably get around to collecting these, because Dick Tracy is such a famous, influential strip. But, honestly, I've never been much of a fan. It was one of the few strips I didn't read growing up, because I found the art so unpalatable.

Famed Dirty Duck and Air Pirates cartoonist Bobby London's more than six-year run on the Popeye newspaper strip has been hailed both as a unique original creation and as an homage to Elzie Segar's larger Thimble Theatre vision.
"Segar was the seminal influence in my career," the cartoonist said. London updated the strip to reflect current pop culture and also brought back the extended story format favored by Segar. London gives us new yet familiar versions of Popeye, Olive Oyl, Swee' Pea and Wimpy, as well as Popeye's Pappy, Olive's brother Castor, Eugene the Jeep, Bernice the Whiffle Hen, the menacing Sea Hag, Alice the Goon and more!
The first of two volumes that will collect every one of Bobby London’s daily Popeye strips.
All I've ever seen of London's work is Dirty Duck, which is spectacularly disgusting, so I'm worried that would affect my enjoyment of this.

Rocky and Bullwinkle must stop the evil Boris and Natasha from duping a wealthy philanthropist in THE PSYCHIC SIDEKICK. And when Dudley Do-Right tries to woo the beautiful Nell, will Snidely Whiplash get away?
Jay Ward’s The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show™, was known for its wry humor, quality writing and appeal to both adults and children. Now, in partnership with Bullwinkle Studios and DreamWorks Animation, IDW Publishing will keep that tradition alive through the magic of comic books with the release of Rocky & Bullwinkle this March.
This Rocky & Bullwinkle series will be brought to life by a creative team that is truly one for the books! Best known for his humor work, Eisner-winner Mark Evanier (Groo the Wanderer, Garfield and Friends) is a natural fit as the series writer, while the incomparable Roger Langridge (The Muppet Show, Popeye) provides pitch-perfect interior art, and fan-favorite Stephanie Buscema (My Little Pony, Powerpuff Girls) brings her unique style to the not-to-be-missed variant covers.
“I grew up, to the extent I grew up, on these characters,” says Mark Evanier, “I watched ROCKY AND HIS FRIENDS™ the first day it was on and I got a lot of my sense of humor, such as it is, from those cartoons. (I was going to say, ‘I was watching it before I was old enough to get all the jokes, but I'm still catching on to what some of them mean.’)”
"Rocky and Bullwinkle wasn't shown in New Zealand when I was growing up, but I was familiar with the comics,” says Roger Langridge, “I particularly love the newspaper strip work of Al Kilgore—his design sense and crisp line are just breathtaking to look at. I'm having to work hard to make sure my art doesn't suffer too much by comparison. It's been a real education to go back to the source and find out where those connections lie."
“My dad, Jay Ward, would be delighted as he was always a huge comic book fan,” says Tiffany Ward daughter of Jay Ward and President of Ward Productions Inc. “It is so exciting to work with IDW Publishing on these new and wonderful releases that will carry on the comic legacy of his characters! It is certainly a special treat for myself and the fans.”
Each issue will be a self-contained story featuring your favorite Rocky & Bullwinkle characters in all-new antics, as well as contain a supporting Dudley Do-Right story, just like the original show. Get ready, because the madcap adventures are about to start!!! But beware, Snidely Whiplash, Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale are always lurkin
• The first Rocky & Bullwinkle comic book since the Eighties!
• DreamWorks is producing a short Rocky & Bullwinkle feature in 2014!
I'd hate to be the writer of this -- he's got some mighty big shoes to fill, and some outsize expectations to meet.

Walter Simonson can honestly be described as a living legend. Besides co-creating Manhunter with the great Archie Goodwin, in the early days of his career, Simonson has written and drawn nearly all of the Marvel and DC characters at one time or another. Highlights include the Fantastic Four, Batman, Orion, Elric and his groundbreaking run on The Mighty Thor.
But before all of these, there was Star Slammers, a series first devised by Simonson during his college days. The Slammers would later be resurrected as a Marvel Graphic Novel, and then a miniseries. Simonson describes it thus: Once upon a time, there was a race of men who could out-shoot, out-fight and out-kill anybody. They were paid fabulous sums to act as mercenaries. The practice became so lucrative, they decided to go into business. They became the most successful businessmen in history, and they called themselves … The Star Slammers!

Many comics readers have been introduced to Simon Roy’s expansive imagination in PROPHET, the epic science fiction series that he writes and draws with Brandon Graham. But his deft hand with futuristic alien worlds was first on display in his short stories, seven of which are now being collected by Image Comics in JAN’S ATOMIC HEART AND OTHER STORIES.
As with so much of Roy’s work, the title story in this collection deposits the reader in a fully-formed world while allowing them to see just a tantalizing slice of life in it. Jan is waiting for a new body after his previous body was destroyed in a car accident, and he’s none too pleased with the outdated robot “loaner” he’s using in the meantime -- even before he begins to suspect it played a role in a Lunar terrorist attack.
In every story, Roy brings familiar attitudes to strange settings, whether it is in the banal brutality of imperialism, the unpredictable bond of friendship, or the everyday concerns that exist even in the most alien of places. The tone ranges from grim to poignant and even humorous -- even within a single story.
Roy’s tendency to juxtapose the quotidian with the alien and to find perspectives at odds with each other may have its roots in his time studying in Ukraine, the “old world” as he called it in an interview with Multiversity Comics, “where you can see the history of the place with every step you take, where all of the history is coexisting at once. ... [Y]ou had all this interesting tension between the different ages of this country all coexisting in a very interesting way.”
JAN’S ATOMIC HEART collects seven stories, some of them never before published: “The Cosmonauts,” “Jan’s Atomic Heart,” “Good Business,” “Shipwrecked with Dan the Gorilla,” “Bar Fight,” “Homeward Bound” and “Hunter Killer.” It will be in comic book stores on March 26 and in bookstores on April 8.

PAUL POPE's new graphic novel Battling Boy debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list, and the original art is now the focus of a series of traveling art exhibits in the United States and Europe. Image Comics presents POPE's large, lush, brushy original drawings, represented here in detail, photographed from the actual art boards, with minimal editorial interference or digital editing. This is a wide sampling from the various touring exhibits, featuring the art in its original format, with text in English, French, and Italian. The book focuses on the subtleties of the drawings in process, replicating the experience of seeing the art in person. 63 originals from Battling Boy are showcased, along with detailed close-ups of the pages. A critical essay by CHARLES BROWNSTEIN, executive director of CBLDF, is included. POPE himself contributes an essay on the influences behind Battling Boy, as well as his process and technique. This is a must for any POPE fan, student, fellow artist, or fan of the medium. MONSTERS & TITANS is a celebration of the original art from one of the most critically-acclaimed American cartoonists of our time.
I've said it before, and it's likely I'll say it again: I don't see what all the fuss is about vis-a-vis Paul Pope. He gets rave reviews from professionals and fans alike, but I find his stories pretentious, and his artwork to be a mediocre swipe of better European artists. (And one thing that bugs me is that all of his leading men -- ALL of them -- look like Mick Jagger.) I just don't get it.

You’ve never seen high fantasy heroines like the Rat Queens before. Hannah the Rockabilly Elven Mage, Violet the Hipster Dwarven Fighter, Dee the Atheist Human Cleric and Betty the Hippy Smidgen are foul-mouthed, gleefully blood-spattered, prone to fits of indiscriminate property damage and often intoxicated. They’re the stars of the hit Image Comics/Shadowline comic book series RAT QUEENS, and they’re best f*cking mercenary team in all of Palisade. So why does someone want them dead? Wait, don’t answer that.
Better than any bard’s song of triumph in battle, RAT QUEENS VOLUME ONE: SASS AND SORCERY by Kurtis J. Wiebe (PETER PANZERFAUST) and Roc Upchurch (VESCELL) will be hitting (and we do mean hitting) store shelves in March. The Queens embark on a quest of rare importance, promising fame and fortune should they succeed in this most dangerous of -- OK, so they have to clear some goblins out of a cave. But things take a surprising turn, and the Queens are going to have to use their wits and weapons to uncover a plot on their lives.
RAT QUEENS rocketed to cult status when its first issue appeared in September 2013 and went on to win IGN's coveted Best New Series of the year. This paperback volume of the series collects the first five issues, with a cover by Fiona Staples (SAGA). Readers who like their swords bloody and their sorcery sarcastic won’t want to miss out on this hot new title.

It's funny, heartwarming and filled with bloody action. Seriously, this is one of the best comic books being published right now. You're a fool to not buy it. Stop being a fool. Your parents raised you better.” -- Benjamin Bailey, IGN
“Told with plenty of gentle nudges toward classic fantasy games and even more swearing, guts and booze, this is a purely fun and very adult take on the genre.” -- Arielle Yarwood, Bitch Magazine
“I have a new favorite fantasy comic, and it's Kurtis J. Wiebe and Roc Upchurch's Rat Queens. Don't let the strange name fool you; it's a book full of violence, mayhem, friendship, secrets and monsters. Oh, and one of the more charmingly dysfunctional groups of warriors you've seen in a while.” -- Greg McElhatton, Comic Book Resources
“The characters created by Wiebe and Upchurch bring the series to life. With all the glamour and stage presence of an all girl rock group, the Rat Queens fill up every iota of the spotlight. Each woman is strong in her own right, and has a unique and well articulated personality.” -- Sam LeBas, Multiversity Comics
“Rat Queens is destined for comic book greatness, and knows how to sink its bloodthirsty hooks into the growing fandom without succumbing to the over-exhausted and widely problematic tropes prevalent in most Fantasy fiction and art today. This cannot be stressed enough: Rat Queens is fantastic, and you should be reading it.” -- ShadowJayd, Bloody Disgusting
“Rat Queens is that rare comic that: 1) features a mostly female leading cast and 2) manages to let those leading women be feisty and foul mouthed without simply being ‘dudes with boobs’ or flattened out into one-dimensional ‘bitch stereotypes.’” -- Lela Gwenn, Women Write About Comics
Awaiting my first trade. That will determine if I follow this. Rat Queens started strong, but recent issues have been kinda disappointing.

REAL HEROES TAKES FLIGHT IN MARCH
Bryan Hitch’s new miniseries pits Hollywood celebrities against super evil forces
The celebrity stars of the blockbuster The Olympians films are about to take “method” to a whole new level. In Bryan Hitch’s all-new six-issue miniseries REAL HEROES, a group of actors who are used to playing superheroes on film are forced to don their capes and cowls in real life when a nefarious foe endangers their city.
REAL HEROES #1 is Hitch’s first foray into writing and drawing his own work, and hits the ground running with an explosion and a brutally-orchestrated fight to the death.
Hitch explained that there is more to REAL HEROES than just another superhero series. The characters are average celebrities faced with an enemy meant for their fictional counterparts. “The real stars of this story are the very fallible, very real actors. It's those characters that shape the story when they find themselves doing it for real,” said Hitch. “Robert Downey Jr. isn't really Tony Stark, Hemsworth isn't Thor, and Cavill isn't Superman. Imagine if they got to be? Very different story.”

This book was initially solicited as The Revenger, and I even received a solicitation cover with that title on it, but by the time the first issue came out, it was simply Revenge. If anybody knows the back story of this switcheroo, I'd love to know!

As the show’s writer finds himself ensnared in a blackmail scheme, the girl behind the scenes stumbles onto the late Carlyle White’s biggest secret of all -- which can't help his son Michael from descending even further into a world of cheap sex and celebrity.
I've got the first Satellite Sam trade, which I hope to get to this week. But I have to ask even before I get into it: Is there a story reason that all of the covers feature two women clearly about to engage in lesbian sex, or is that just Howard Chaykin being Howard Chaykin?

Because you demanded it! Mighty Marvel presents Roger Stern’s celebrated 1980s run on Spectacular Spider-Man and Amazing Spider-Man in one sensational Omnibus edition! Paired with John Romita Jr. and a cast of other top art talents, Roger Stern reinvigorated the life of everyone’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Stern crafted definitive battles with the Juggernaut, the Vulture and the Kingpin, the fan-favorite tale of “The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man,” the 1st appearance of Monica Rambeau (a.k.a. Captain Marvel), and amazing introduction of the Hobgoblin! This is Spidey at his best -- and Peter Parker, too! The lovely Black Cat, Amy Powell, and Mary Jane Watson are all vying for our hero’s undivided attention. So now that we have your attention, reserve your copy today, True Believer! Collecting THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN (1976) 43-61, 85, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (1963) 203, 224-252 & ANNUAL (1964) 16-17 and material from AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #15, SPECTAULAR SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #3, WEB OF SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #3 and WHAT IF…? #34
“This is all incredibly flattering,” said Stern. “I never imagined that Marvel would collect four years of my Spider-Man stories under one cover.” The collection, Spider-Man by Roger Stern Omnibus, will be 1296 pages long.
Spider-Man, who debuted in 1962, has been written and drawn by a veritable Who's Who of creative talents. A recent poll, conducted to determine the hero's top ten writers, placed Stern at number three, right after Spider-Man creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.
Working with artist John Romita Jr., Stern wrote many highly-regarded Spider-Man stories. During their tenure, Stern and Romita created the villainous Hobgoblin, and are often credited with reinvigorating the Amazing Spider-Man series.
“When I first started writing comic books, about the only way our readers could find the stories that they'd missed was to search used-book stores, comic book conventions, and flea markets for old, crumbling back issues. But over the past couple decades, comics publishers have put more and more effort into collecting the work of their writers and artists into paperback and hardcover books. It's wonderful to see the stories I wrote become available again in a more durable format.”
The Spider-Man by Roger Stern Omnibus will go on sale in comic book specialty stores on March 26, 2014, and from online sources in April. The book will retail for $125, but many booksellers are offering discounts for readers who order in advance. “I like to encourage readers to support their local comic book stores whenever possible,” said Stern, “so if you're planning on buying a copy of the Omnibus through your local store, please be aware that those stores must submit their final orders to the publisher by December 9th of this year.”
In addition to his Spider-Man work, Stern has written hundreds of stories about such diverse characters as Captain America, Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, and the Avengers for Marvel Comics; and Superman, Green Lantern, Starman, and the Justice League for DC Comics.
Stern's first prose novel, The Death and Life of Superman, adapted the history-making story from DC's Superman titles. His second novel, Smallville: Strange Visitors -- an original story based on the hit television series -- was published by Warner Books in 2002. His third novel, Superman: The Never-Ending Battle, was published by Pocket Books in 2005, and an audio book adaptation was released by Graphic Audio in 2008.
Stern has written several graphic novels -- including Doctor Strange & Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment, Superman: A Nation Divided, The Incredible Hulk vs. Superman and Superman for Earth -- and his stories have been collected in dozens of editions, including Captain America: War & Remembrance, Darkman vs. Army of Darkness and Avengers: Under Siege.
Roger Stern has also written for radio, television, the stage, and the Internet, creating scripts for everything from sketch comedy to flash-animation. He once tugged on Superman's cape.
"Roger Stern is widely considered to be the best Spider-Man writer since Stan Lee. According to Comic Book Resources readers, he is responsible for three of the ten best Spider-Man stories ever: 'The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man' ... 'Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut' ... and the Hobgoblin Saga. His 26 issues of Amazing Spider-Man may just be the most perfect run in the series's history. A new reader who picks it up at a book store is bound to be impressed." -- Thomas Mets, Wordpress.com
"Roger Stern's legendary run on Amazing Spider-Man followed an eighteen-issue run on Spectacular Spider-Man ... an important part of Stern's overall Spider-Man work. That said, when Stern took over Amazing Spider-Man ... he was in the driver's seat for the Spider-Man books as a whole and he was a great driver." -- Brian Cronin, Comic Book Resources

Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds descended upon the Ultimate Universe with an insatiable hunger. Though he was defeated by the bravery of a small band of heroes -- the cost was devastatingly high. New York City lays a smoldering ruin, and not everyone made it back alive. Many of the Ultimates are dead – and the remaining heroes are all beaten, broken, and emotionally drained.
“You’ve got all these characters [that] have been through hell together and now they’re coming out the other side and they’re kind of committed to each other, now that Captain America’s gone and some other characters aren’t making it back,” says writer Brian Michael Bendis in an interview with Marvel.com.
“A lot of these characters are very young, and with that comes a lot of emotion, a lot of drama, a lot of people making some disastrous mistakes both in their professional and in their personal lives; and all of that will be on display right away.”
Witness the birth of a new team of Ultimates! Who survived the fury of Galactus? Who didn’t make it out alive? What will become of S.H.I.E.L.D? The future of the Ultimate Universe is happening now! All your questions will be answered this March in SURVIVE #1!
I kinda lost interest in the Ultimate Universe when they killed off Peter Parker. I wasn't that married to the character or anything, but it just kinda felt like they did it just to be shocking. It smelled of desperation, like they had run out of ideas. The whole line just felt played out. Was I wrong, Legionnaires?

Pre-Crisis Tomar-Re attempted to prevent the explosion of Krypton, and failed. This was revealed in the "Fabulous World of Krypton" back-up story in Superman #257.

Thanks, Luke! You are a demon on research!
Was that story drawn by Dick Dillin? That's what I see in my head when I think about it. Weirdly, I can remember the artist, but I didn't remember the GL was Tomar-Re! The brain works in mysterious ways.
And now that I think on it further, I think the post-Crisis story I was thinking of was not a Green Lantern failing to stop Krypton from exploding, but John Stewart failing to stop Xanshi from exploding. The Tomar-Re story may be the only one DC has done until now to explain why the GLC dropped the ball on Krypton.
