Comics Guide for May 20, 2015

Here's another Action Lab title starring a girl. They're turning into the most girl-friendly publisher around.

I haven't read it yet, but I plan to.

AERO GIRL #1

Publisher: ACTION LAB ENTERTAINMENT

Writer: DEWAYNE FEENSTRA

Art: AXUR ENEAS

Cover: AXUR ENEAS, JUAN PAUL REIBELING

Variant: JOEL GOMEZ, BETH SOTELO

32 pgs./All Ages / FC

$3.99/ $4.99 Variant

As Aero-Girl, Jacqueline Mackenzie is the protector of Foxbay. As the sidekick to Battle Jack, her father, her life couldn’t be any better; but tragedy is just around the corner! Will she be ready to defend her city against the evil of Dr. Chimera and his army of AniMen? Can Aero-Girl be the hero she (and her father) always wanted?

Speaking of girls, Marvel can see which way the wind is blowing, too. Here's the first all-female Avengers. Sure, this is a clumsy way to shift the balance of white-maleness, but so was the all-ethnic Avengers of last year. In the end, as ever, it's all about the stories. If they're good, it works.

Marvel’s Mightiest Women finally get their own explosive series!

An all-new era begins this May as Marvel’s Mightiest Mavens assemble for an explosive new series launching during Secret Wars! Today, Marvel is pleased to present your new look inside the blockbuster A-FORCE #1 – from the creative team of G. Willow Wilson (Ms. Marvel), Marguerite Bennett (Angela: Asgard’s Assassin, James Patterson’s Max Ride: First Flight) and Jorge Molina (X-Men)!

As the Secret Wars begin, the Avengers as you know them are no more – and a new team will lead the way! In a secluded corner of Battleworld lies Arcadia, an island nation fiercely protected by a team of Avengers the likes of which has never been seen before!

So who are the Marvel powerhouses taking center stage? “She-Hulk, Dazzler, Medusa, Nico Minoru and other fan favorites, will take charge,” says series co-writer G. Willow Wilson. “We've purposefully assembled a team composed of different characters from disparate parts of the Marvel U, with very different power sets, identities and ideologies.”

And there came a day unlike any other, when Earth’s Mightiest Heroines found themselves united against a common threat. Fighting to protect the small sliver of their world that’s left, they stand tall, shoulder-to-shoulder, ready to take on the horde. Ushering in a new day with a rallying cry heard across Battleworld – A-FORCE ASSEMBLE!

Heed the call, and don’t miss the start of a comic series that will have the world talking when A-FORCE #1 hits comic shops and digital devices this May!

I thought this was a good set of ideas, pushing the Ghost Rider concept beyond its original structure (which, to tell you the truth, was kinda limited). Can't say I liked the art much, though.

ALL-NEW GHOST RIDER VOL. 2: LEGEND (TPB)

Publisher: MARVEL COMICS

Written by FELIPE SMITH

Penciled by DAMION SCOTT & FELIPE SMITH

Cover by DAMION SCOTT

160 PGS / Rated T+ / $19.99

The all-new Ghost Rider has become a local hero! But is Robbie Reyes street-racing straight toward eternal damnation? When the original Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze, shows up, hellfire sparks will fly as the legend comes face-to-face with the reality! It’s old-school vs. new-school, age vs. youth, East vs. West -- Ghost Rider vs. Ghost Rider! Can the cocky, inexperienced all-new Rider stand up to the Spirit of Vengeance, or will Robbie lose his soul in the battle that ensues? Plus: As his powers continue to evolve, Robbie learns a shocking truth about his long-lost parents — but what fate awaits his brother, Gabe? What is satanic serial killer Eli Morrow’s spirit really after? And as the fatal finish line approaches, will Eli’s evil finally push Robbie Reyes over the edge? Collecting ALL-NEW GHOST RIDER #6-12.

I read an advance review copy of Apocalyptigirl, and really enjoyed it. The first thing I have to say is: Whatever you think this is, it isn't. Yes, it's set in a post-apocalyptic world, and the lead, an early twenties female, enjoys opera (hence the title). But other than that, almost every plot point confounds expectation. The art is something I enjoyed as well, a sort of "vaguely manga" crossed with "vaguely Moebius." I don't know if that has a name, but I liked it. It's clear, conveys emotion and action well, and isn't too fussy.

APOCALYPTIGIRL: AN ARIA FOR THE END TIMES (TPB)

Publisher: DARK HORSE

Writer/Art/Cover: ANDREW MACLEAN

FC, 96 pages, $9.99

TPB, 6″ x 9″

Alone at the end of the world, Aria is a woman with a mission! As she traipses through an overgrown city with a cat named Jelly Beans, Aria is on a fruitless search for an ancient relic with immeasurable power. But when a creepy savage sets her on a path to complete her quest, she’ll face death in the hopes of claiming her prize.

The premiere graphic novel from underground sensation Andrew MacLean (Head Lopper)!

Praise for MacLean’s Head Lopper:

Head Lopper is what you’d get if Mike Mignola wrote an issue for Brian Wood’s Northlanders by way of James Stokoe’s Orc Stain.” -- Multiversity Comics

If you’ve already had the pleasure of seeing the truly inspiring, gorgeous, and mind-boggling art of Andrew MacLean in the pages of Dark Horse Presents, Outlaw Territory, his self-published comic Head Lopper, or more recently in the back of God Hates Astronauts, well … then I’m preaching to the choir here. You’ve seen the light, as well as the skill, the power, and the grace of his art. You get it already, I’m sure!

If not, let me tell you about Mr. MacLean. Put simply, and though this sounds like hyperbole it’s true, Andrew’s a unique talent poised to change the landscape of comics. Once you see his work, you’ll see what I mean, much like John Arcudi, who first brought Andrew to my attention, did: “Andrew has one of the most boldly original visions in comics. He seems to see the world so differently from the rest of us, and that’s what makes him perfect for this medium.” Mr. Arcudi is damn right. Boldly original is what makes Andrew’s work so impressive. It’s rare. It should be celebrated, treasured.

And that’s where ApocalyptiGirl: An Aria for the End Times comes in. It’s Andrew’s first full-length graphic novel, a tale of a girl and her cat in a beautiful, damaged, deadly post-apocalyptic world that Mike Oeming calls "a mixture of Nausicca and Adventure Time.” It’s a story about survival, maintaining your sanity in the face of overwhelming loneliness, and what home means -- even when your home keeps trying to kill you!

A beautiful package featuring a beautiful story, ApocalyptiGirl has an easy-entry price of $9.99 and is, I think, a comic you can hand to nearly any type of comic fan to enjoy. Take a look at the first few pages and you’ll see what I mean. Read the whole thing and you’ll be a MacLean fan for life, guaranteed.

Frankly, I find these covers hard to resist.

• Variant covers by Dustin Nguyen (Batman Eternal, Adventure Time) and Robert Hack (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina)!

• IT’S OPEN SEASON ON ARCHIE!

I tried to read this before it came out, honest I did. I had a review copy and started it several times, but man, it's a pretty big book. (Also, not even a tiny bit interested in Pablo Picasso.) But I tried!

ART MASTERS SERIES VOL 2: PABLO (GN)

Publisher: SELFMADEHERO

Writer: JULIE BIRMANT

Art/Cover: CLEMENT OUBRERIE

$27.50

This award-winning graphic biography of Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) captures the prolific and eventful life of one of the world's best-loved artists. Pablo explores Picasso's early life among the bohemians of Montmartre, his turbulent relationship with artist/model Fernande Olivier, and how his art developed through friendships with poets Max Jacob and Guillaume Apollinaire, the painter Georges Braque, and his great rival Henri Matisse. Julie Birmant and Clément Oubrerie depict a career that began in poverty and reached its climax with the advent of cubism and modern art.I thought Namor was already dead! Well, whatever. This is a match-up I haven't seen before (and, frankly, seems less lop-sided than the recent Thanos vs. Hulk miniseries, because Namor can approach Hulk's strength without being dumb as a rock). Of course, none of it "matters," because no matter happens, Secret Wars can hit the reset button.

AVENGERS WORLD #21

Publisher: MARVEL COMICS

Writer: FRANK BARBIERE

Art: MARCO CHECCHETTO

Cover by JEFF DEKAL

32 PGS / Rated T+ / $3.99

• The last stand of A.I.M. … in the Savage Land!

• Thor and Hyperion unleashed!

• Can Namor survive The Cabal?

This seemed like a dopey idea to me when I read about it, practically swiped from the Silver Age. (And can anyone really tell if the Hulk is acting evil?) Well, maybe the execution saved it. Did it, True Believers?

AXIS: REVOLUTIONS (TPB)

Publisher: MARVEL COMICS

Written by DENNIS HOPELESS, SIMON SPURRIER, FRANK TIERI, KEVIN MAURER, RAY FAWKES, FRANK BARBIERE, JOHN BARBER & HOWARD CHAYKIN

Penciled by KEN LASHLEY, TAN ENG HUAT, PAUL DAVIDSON & HOWARD CHAYKIN

Cover by KEN LASHLEY

96 PGS / Rated T+ / $12.99

It’s a compendious collection of companion stories, spinning directly out of Marvel’s newest blockbuster event, AXIS! As the Red Skull broadcasts hate across the globe, can the Avengers and X-Men quell the madness? Or will they be swept up in it? New world disorder is the name of the game as the Skull’s havoc touches every mind on the planet -- and the heroes’ cure proves worse than the disease! Heroes go bad! Villains go good! And Thor goes … on a bender? Now, shock follows shock as Dr. Strange struggles against his hate, She-Hulk breaks the law, Sandman reaches out to help a friend in prison, Kitty Pryde robs a bank, and Nightcrawler decides to avenge the death of Wolverine … by hunting down Sabretooth! Experience the inverted world of the Marvel Universe like never before! Collecting AXIS: REVOLUTIONS #1-4.

I've read comments about how this anthology "stole" its cover dress from East of West. And, yes, it's practically identical. But since Jonathan Hickman is co-creator/owner of East of West, and he's the most prominent writer here, I'd say it's being used with permission.

• Well ... it is ... but not THAT Secret Wars.

As Secret Wars devastates the Marvel Universe by forging a new Marvel reality on the enormous patch-work planet of Battleworld, Wade Wilson will head back to the original 1984 Secret Wars series for his Warzones! tie-in, DEADPOOL’S SECRET SECRET WARS.

In 1984, Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars was known for debuting Spider-Man's black costume and featuring Doctor Doom stealing the Beyonder's power, and the first-ever event series also included a variety of appearances by Deadpool that readers never saw. DEADPOOL’S SECRET SECRET WARS by the Deadpool Killustrated team of Cullen Bunn and Matteo Lolli, will have the Merc with the Mouth revealed to be a part of the 1984 comic book event and drawn into scenes from the original series.

“Way back when, right after I had finished Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe, we were looking for something out of the ordinary as a follow up,” Bunn tells Marvel.com. "One of my first suggestions was to have Deadpool thrown back in time into the middle of the original Secret Wars limited series. At the time, we decided to go in a different direction, but the idea of having Wade playing a big, in-continuity role in the events of that series stuck with me.”

Marvel.com’s interview with Bunn expands on his excitement of inserting Deadpool into all of these classic scenes from Secret Wars, especially when he meets and interacts with the Marvel heroes from the '80s.

“When Deadpool introduces himself to the other heroes, most of them have no idea who he is,” Bunn notes. “At least, most of them are unwilling to admit that they know him! As the battle between good and evil commences, Deadpool gets plenty of opportunities to annoy the hell out of every major hero and villain in the Marvel Universe before the festivities are done!”

This May, DEADPOOL’S SECRET SECRET WARS rudely places itself into Marvel continuity and into comic book retailers everywhere.

Plus: a bonus Deadpool Contest of Champions tale!

DIRK GENTLY’S HOLISTIC DETECTIVE AGENCY #1 (of 5)

Publisher: IDW Publishing

Writer: CHRIS RYALL

Cover: TONY AKINS

Subscription Variant: ROB GUILLORY

FC • 32 pages • $3.99

An all-new comic series based on Douglas Adams’ beloved holistic detective! Dirk arrives in San Diego to face a new country, new cases and new threats: reincarnation, for starters …!

• The star of two (almost three) beloved Douglas Adams novels comes to comics!

• Art by Tony “Fables” Akins! Variant covers by Rob “Chew” Guillory!

• “The Interconnectedness of All Kings,” part 1 of 5, begins here!

• Variant film noir cover by Robert Hack!

In partnership with Ideate Media, IDW Publishing is proud to announce that Dirk Gently will be appearing in his first-ever comic-book series in 2015, helping to prove the interconnectedness of all things, the precept by which Dirk Gently, Douglas Adams’ beloved fictional “holistic detective” lives.

Following the recent announcement that Gently will be developed for television by IDW Entertainment and Ideate Media with Circle of Confusion as Executive Producers and Max Landis as showrunner, IDW will also launch an ongoing series of all-new Dirk Gently adventures as comic books.

The series launching in spring 2015, will be written by Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief and creator/writer of series such as Zombies vs Robots, Groom Lake, and The Hollows. The series artist will be Tony Akins (Fables), and Chew co-creator Rob Guillory has contributed a first cover image, too. Full story details and release information will follow soon.

“I know that an American writing Dirk comics is going to get a certain segment of British Adams fans a bit brassed off,” said Ryall, “but, much like in the case of the oft-referenced Schrödinger’s cat in the Dirk novels, we can all agree that until the world opens these comics, they are both good and not good, right? And certainly Adams’ writing transcends all borders and has rightfully earned him a worldwide following. I can’t wait to bring Dirk into the world of comics.”

"Douglas was best known for Hitchhiker, but his real creative passion was always Dirk. Of the two series, this was his secret favourite.  I know he would have smiled upon its re-incarnation as a comic book,” said Ed Victor, Douglas Adams’ longtime agent and friend.

Adams’ Dirk Gently, who appeared in Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, Dirk Gently’s Long, Dark Tea-time of the Soul, and the unfinished Dirk Gently fragment that Douglas was writing at the time of his death The Salmon of Doubt, is a charismatic, mysterious, troubled, brilliant, figure -- cursed with a relentless intellect, psychic powers he doesn’t fully understand or want, a gift for self-mythologizing and a supernatural ability to detect disturbances in the fabric of reality. Dirk has found a strange calling as a private detective for impossible crimes, the likes of which will take many forms in the comics.

    More praise for GRAVEYARD SHIFT:

“Overall, Graveyard Shift excels at bringing a fresh take on the vampire genre with characters that are smart and engaging.” -- Geeks with Wives

“One of the best written and drawn horror comics currently out.” -- Big Glasgow Comic Page

“Exciting action, gripping drama, and a fitting climax.” -- Unleash the Fanboy

1936699222?profile=RESIZE_180x180I confess I am still irked by the very existence of this book. I read Grendel when it first came out in the Long Before Time, and was thoroughly unimpressed. As it graduated to multiple Grendels in various time frames, none of whom I found compelling, I dropped it in disgust. So, with that prejudice in the back of my head, my first thought when hearing about this series was "The Shadow should drop that punk on Page 2." But, of course, not everyone shares my opinions. If you're both a Grendel fan and a Shadow fan, then this is definitely for you. The art, as you can see, is pretty nifty.

Story / Art / Cover: RAY FAWKES

    128 PAGES / FC / M / $14.99

    Collects INTERSECT #1-6.

Bestselling cartoonist Ray Fawkes (Batman: Eternal, Constantine, One Soul, The People Inside) pushes sequential storytelling boundaries with his horror-inducing, transcendent tale INTERSECT.

Bodies shift and merge, warring with themselves. Blood rains from the skies. A child’s song is translated into toxic, thought-destroying whispers. Everything is changing. Everything is wrong. This is the world of INTERSECT.

    More praise for INTERSECT:

“Epitomizes the creative opportunities horror has in the comic medium. Ray Fawkes firmly rejects the retrofitting of horror film tropes and conventions that is all too common in horror comics today to deliver something truly original, truly unreplicable, and truly terrifying. … Intersect just might be the scariest book ever written.” -- Bloody Disgusting

“Intersect is vastly different than anything you've read before. Completely breaking away from traditional comics, Fawkes shows you what is capable in this medium. It's stories like these that pave the way for other original stories and ideas to follow.” -- Coming Up Comics

“A harrowing psychological drama, Intersect tears at the most basic components of the of the human experience. It's uncomfortable and oddly terrifying. The pacing of the story, with its constant twists and turns, never allows readers to get comfortable. It is an incredibly disorienting experience, robbing us of the truths we cling to in order to define ourselves. Fawkes presents a reality that betrays the most essential elements of identity and understanding. This is a difficult book, but it rewards those who are willing to lose themselves in it. Highly imaginative and beautifully rendered.” -- Multiversity Comics

“Intersect is like nothing out there.” -- Comic Bastards1936699222?profile=RESIZE_180x180If memory serves, this sequence of the World's Greatest Heroes followed Grant Morrison's relaunch of the title with the Big 7 (which was very good), and Mark Waid's run (which was also very good). This is part of Joe Kelly's run (which wasn't very good), but still has that unique Doug Mahnke art to recommend it.

If you don't remember who the woman in pink and white was, don't worry -- she didn't stick around long. Her name was Faith and she had psychokinetic powers, but even I don't remember much more than that.

The guy in black is Major Disaster, who was briefly a member. I don't recall who that shaman-looking guy is, who probably had something to do with "The Obsidian Age," a storyline I have actively tried to forget.

Can one man defeat an entire empire? Find out this May, as fists fly on the surface of BATTLEWORLD and a victor will be crowned in MASTER OF KUNG-FU #1, a new 4-issue limited series launching during Secret Wars! Fan-favorite creators Haden Blackman (Elektra) and Dalibor Talajic (Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe) team to take you inside the mystical land of K’un Lun for a series of brutal trials by combat!

Welcome to K’un Lun, a land where the study of martial arts reigns supreme. In a world where everyone is a master of their craft, what becomes of the drunken, drop-out failure? Shang-Chi was the most prized student at the most prestigious of K’un Lun’s many martial arts schools. Now he’s a washed up has-been living on the streets.

Cast out and forsaken by society, Shang-Chi will join other outcasts like him in a bid to dethrone the harsh and evil Emperor Zu. One problem – Zu is Shang-Chi’s father! Things are going to get messy.

“I’m really looking forward to portraying Shang-Chi in ways that we haven’t seen before,” says Haden Blackman in an interview with Marvel.com. “He begins the story very down and out, an exile and an outcast himself, which was very fun to write. I’m also hopeful that the interactions with some of the supporting cast will show us different sides of Shang-Chi, who finds himself a reluctant mentor.”

Another mega-church is robbed despite the FBI’s surveillance. Tension ratchets up as a member of Samaritan’s “heist” team is killed and the “Robin Hood” act isn’t quite as fun as they thought.

"Wait, this comic is about a group that robs from mega-churches and gives the money to charity? That's cool as hell!

This comic is really great!" -- Robert Kirkman

"The Tithe's aim is true -- targeting the hypocrisy born of naivete.

As such it will piss off a lot of people. My only regret is that I didn't write it. Well, done, Mr. Hawkins!"  -- Jim Valentino

Writer Matt Hawkins (THINK TANK, TALES OF HONOR) and artist Rahsan Ekedal’s all-new thriller suspense series -- THE TITHE -- is a breakout hit, gathering high praise and momentum with issue #2 slated to release on May 20.

In THE TITHE #2, another mega-church is robbed despite the FBI’s surveillance. Tension ratchets up as a member of Samaritan’s “heist” team is killed and the “Robin Hood” act isn’t quite as fun as they originally thought.

    Early praise for THE TITHE:

“While the main premise is definitely intriguing, it's with these characters where the series finds both emotional depth and an interesting intellectual debate.” -- IGN

“A strong and approachable story with a fresh flavor.” -- Comic Book Resources

“Hawkins and Edekel might've just invented a whole new genre of comic-book, 'The Mega-Church Heist'.” -- Multiversity Comics

“This is some great writing paired with some excellent art and definitely worth a look.” -- Comicosity

“If politics is your bag, or you have issues with the rise of mega-churchs that have pastors that have annual salaries in the millions, this piece is for you.” -- Comix I Read

“I was pleasantly surprised at just how much I enjoyed this issue and the controversial topics it introduces… The creative team does a great job of balancing both sides of the issue by writing a strong main character who I'm looking forward to reading more about.” -- Comic Spectrum

“A quality romp into rebellious wilderness that's bound to turn heads ... this comes recommended.” -- Unleash the Fanboy

“Good guys! Bad guys! Cool heists! Religion! Overall, its just a damn good story. Looking forward to #2. Well done guys.” -- Big Comic Page

“A Robin Hood style comic … surprised me in some great ways.” -- Comic Book Therapy

“Matt Hawkins is putting together a nice streak of good books lately and this should be added to the list. Rahsan Ekedal did great work on this issue and certainly looks to have a bright future in the business. The Tithe is a book that deserves a read, the good writing and excellent art will keep you coming back.” -- All-Comic

The conclusion to an epic two years in the making — and rest assured, nothing will ever be the same again! Collecting UNCANNY AVENGERS #18-22.1801491011?profile=RESIZE_180x180As I've mentioned before, All-New X-Men has become my favorite X-title, possibly of all time. Revolution is over. The war has begun. Cyclops and his Uncanny X-Men are tired of the hunt. After another near-fatal Sentinel attack, they take the fight to S.H.I.E.L.D. Maria Hill claims she doesn’t know who’s building the Sentinels — but she hasn’t stopped them, either. She’s relying on Dazzler, S.H.I.E.L.D.’s mutant liaison, to help defuse the situation. But Dazzler lies incapacitated in Mystique’s headquarters — and Mystique makes a convincing imitation! And where is Magneto, the former head of the mutant movement? Then, it’s an Original Sin tie-in as Charles Xavier’s last will and testament is discovered, but what’s concealed within its pages might be the X-Men’s ultimate undoing! Could a previously unknown power now be their greatest threat? How will the Uncanny X-Men cope with the shadows of Xavier’s past? In these final UNWRITTEN tales from issues #7-12, the three immortals – Wilson, Rausch and Pullman – are moving toward their respective endgames. But when was the last time they were all in the same room together? Answer: half a century ago, in Oxford, England. And the reasons for what they’re doing now can be found in what they said to each other back then ...

Bestselling writer Joe Casey (SEX) and artist Paul Maybury (SOVEREIGN) team up for an all-new high fantasy series in VALHALLA MAD. The series launches from Image Comics on May 20.

Their names are legend: the Glorious Knox! Greghorn the Battlebjörn! Jhago the Irritator! Three warrior gods vacationing on Earth, just looking to get their drink on and have a good time! Join the drunken festivities—a new mythology begins in VALHALLA MAD.

“Never in the history of periodical publishing has a tale of such god-sized inebriation and social debauchery been committed to four-color print!” said Casey. “You can smell the mead coming right off the pages! Not to mention, it might be Paul Maybury's greatest artistic achievement yet! Just get ready for a heady dose of ‘thee's’ and ‘thou's’ as three gods get seriously drunk …”

The white-hot spy series from the creators of Captain America: The Winter Soldier is back! Everything Velvet Templeton ever believed about the worst night of her life has turned out to be a lie, and now she's coming back to London, taking the hunt back to the hunters, to find the truth or die trying.

Don't miss the second volume in the adventures of comics' favorite new super-spy!

Collects VELVET #6-10.1801467472?profile=RESIZE_180x180I distinctly remember when the middle-aged writers of the '60s and '70s began trying their hand at incorporating hippie culture and the like into comics. Some took a knee-jerk, conservative approach: "This is all bad, children! Return to the 1950s! And get a haircut!" Some tried to be sympathetic, and use the slang and new conventions as they understood them (which they didn't). The end result was all uniformly awful, whether in romance books or not. We kids found their efforts vastly amusing. As evidenced by the cover below, they probably still are pretty funny.
