COMICS GUIDE FOR NOV. 12, 2014

Titles listed in the Comics Guide come from the weekly list at the Diamond Comic Distributors Inc. website, and are subject to change. The information in the Comics Guide comes not only from Diamond but from solicitations, press releases and previews released by the publishers, except for random comments by Captain Comics (in blue).

BEST BETS

For more information on Best Bets and other titles,
consult the "This Week's Comics" section below.

ALL-NEW CAPTAIN AMERICA ($3.99, Marvel Comics): Old white man is out, and young black man is in. Cap's long-standing partner Sam "Falcon" Wilson takes up the shield now that Rogers' Super-Soldier Serum has crapped out. Nobody expects it to be permanent, but it should be interesting to see how Wilson's approach differs from Rogers', both in leadership and tactics (now that we have a Captain America who can fly).

ARCHER AND ARMSTRONG: THE ONE-PERCENT #1 ($3.99, Valiant Comics): You always knew the 1% who own most of the wealth are bad guys, right? In the world of Archer and Armstrong, they're not only bad, they're downright EEEE-vil. They're also quite organized, claim to have made a deal with the devil and secretly rule the world. This one-shot lets us know what they're up to, how they work -- and what trouble they plan for our heroes.

MOUSE GUARD: BALDWIN THE BRAVE AND OTHER TALES (HC, $14.99, BOOM!): Mouse Guard is an improbably hit, but the art and storytelling -- about a civilization of Middle Ages mice -- is amazingly good.

BATGIRL #35 (2ND PTG, $2.99, DC Comics): The new, Millennial-oriented approach to Barbara Gordon -- what fans are calling the "Doc Martens Batgirl" -- has apparently hit paydirt. Here's a second chance to get in on the ground floor, along with the second issue, BATGIRL #36 ($2.99).

BATMAN: THE COMPLETE TELEVISION SERIES: As a lad, I loved the campy 1966 Batman series. As a young adult, though, I came to despise it, because it locked in Batman as a joke in the popular imagination. But Tim Burton's 1989 Batman fixed that problem, and now in hindsight I really enjoy this well-made, unhinged take on the Dark Knight. For years the only way to enjoy it was in reruns -- it seemed to be in reruns somewhere all the time -- because the rights to the show were tied up by multiple players. That's been ironed out, though, and now you can get the entire run in a variety of formats with a variety of extras. The entire series is available in both Blu-ray and DVD, while individual seasons are available in DVD. And watch for the Captain Comics Bat-Quiz in two weeks!

CAPTAIN AMERICA AND THE MIGHTY AVENGERS #1 ($3.99, Marvel): The debut of a new Avengers title isn't as special as it used to be -- there are a LOT of Avengers titles since the movie -- but this one launches from the advent of the new Captain America (see above) and the hero-villain switcheroo occurring in the AXIS crossover event. It's an unusual membership, including not only Cap but Luke Cage, Spider-Man, Spectrum (Monica Rambeau), the new Power Man, the new White Tiger and She-Hulk.

DEEP STATE #1 ($3.99, BOOM!): At last, a comic book for conspiracy buffs! Why haven't there been a lot of comic books about conspiracies? That's all part of the conspiracy! The comic book publishers are all in on it! Anyway, in this book, a guy who officially doesn't exist works to keep a lid on all the other things we're not supposed to know about. What a great job, if he could tell anybody about it.

DJANGO/ZORRO #1 ($3.99, Dynamite Entertainment): Dynamite has done right by Zorro for quite a while, and ever since I read the comics adaptation of Django Unchained I've felt Quentin Tarrantino's Western character could do well as an ongoing Western anti-hero in the Jonah Hex vein. So I'm delighted to see both characters back in print, although they are separated in age by about 80 years. The real selling point, though, is that Tarrantino joins comics veteran Matt Wagner to write this miniseries, and calls it an official sequel to the movie!

DRIFTER #1 ($3.99, Image Comics): A new, ongoing sci-fi title by a creative team and a publisher that do science fiction very well.

HERO COMICS 2014 ($3.99, IDW Publications): This book benefits The Hero Initiative, which tries to provide a safety net for needy comics creators, many of whom were shystered by the publishers on their creations, and as lifelong contract laborers, have no Social Security, health insurance or pension. If that doesn't do it for you, consider that the book contains a Maxx story by creator Sam Kieth and a Jon Freelance story by creator Mike Grell.

THE LONE RANGER: VINDICATED #1 (of 4, Dynamite, $3.99): Lone Ranger is another character that Dynamite has done well, although sales haven't supported it. Now they're testing the waters with another miniseries, this time with ace Western writer Justin Gray (Jonah Hex, All-Star Western) at the helm. And the Ranger still has those awesome John Cassaday covers!

THE RESURRECTIONISTS #1 ($3.50, Dark Horse): Fred Van Lente has made a name for himself, mainly at Dynamite and Valiant, so this creator-owned work could be pretty good. Especially since the concept is interesting: "Resurrectionists" are people who can remember past lives, and therefore lost knowledge and arcane skills. Worth a look.

SPIDER-VERSE #1 (of 2, $4.99, Marvel): The big Spider-crossover formally begins (it actually launched last week in Amazing Spider-Man #9), where a legion of thousands of Spider-Characters from across the multiverse team up to stop Morlun, who is trying to exterminate them. That sounds wacky enough to be fun.

SUPERIOR IRON MAN #1 ($3.99, Marvel): Tony Stark's ego has taken control, and now he's going to fix the world -- whether the world likes it or not! Witness Stark at his most smug and egotistical, two things he does very well! It all begins here, and it's probably not going to end pretty!

DYNAMITE

ARMY OF DARKNESS #1992.1

The first cover appears to be an homage to the Frank Frazetta painting "Barbarian" (far left), which I first saw on the cover a 1960s paperback edition of Conan the Adventurer. Or, given the background of planets and moons on the Army cover, it could be an homage to Frazetta's "A Princess of Mars" (near left), which first appeared on a 1970 edition of Edgar Rice Burroughs' A Princess of Mars. Or it could just be an homage to the zillions of sword-and-sorcery images of a warrior with a hot chick wrapped around one of his legs. I don't know if "Barbarian" was the first of such images, but I rather imagine it wasn't.For all I know, the Army cover is an homage to, say, a Planet Comics cover of the 1940s or some pulp cover of the 1920s or '30s. Or it could just be, by now, generic.

The second cover is more certain. It's clearly an homage to Frazetta's "The Death Dealer" painting (right), which I think was originally used as a the cover to the album Molly Hatchet. I not only have a framed print of "Death Dealer" on my wall, but also the statue!

Writers: STEVE NILES, ELLIOTT SERRANO, CULLEN BUNN, JAMES KUHORIC, MIKE RAICHT

Subscription Variant: ROBERT CASTRO

48 pages / Teen + / $7.99

Dynamite Entertainment is inviting fans everywhere to join the celebration with a very special Army of Darkness tale, dedicated by its issue number to honor the year of the original cult film's release. Army of Darkness #1992.1 will be a commemorative square-bound edition, featuring short stories of demon-hunting hero Ash Williams written by the series' greatest terror talents of issues past, including Steve Niles, Elliott Serrano, Cullen Bunn, James Kuhoric and Mike Raicht.

Army of Darkness #1992.1 celebrates the history of Dynamite's publishing by inviting many of its most notable writers to contribute short vignettes.  Steve Niles (30 Days of Night) is the most recent contributor to the saga, with tales of medieval terror in Ash and the Army of Darkness and Army of Darkness: Ash Gets Hitched.  Elliott Seranno contributed such story arcs as "Hail to the Queen, Baby" and "The King is Dead."  James Kuhoric (Six Million Dollar Man: Season 6) wrote some of the earliest Dynamite adventures, including "Shop ‘Til You Drop Dead" and "Army of Darkness Vs. Reanimator." Mike Raicht (Dark Shadows) contributed the storylines "Hellbillies and Deadnecks" and "Home Sweet Hell."

Meanwhile, Cullen Bunn is a celebrated comic book author (Deadpool, Magneto, Sixth Gun) tackling Army of Darkness for the first time, and setting up its hero for the next adventure.  As Senior Editor Joseph Rybandt says, "Army of Darkness will always have a special place in our collective hearts, as ten years ago, it was our very first title.  We've thrown everything at Ash in the interim, but we're throwing him into space next. And it all starts here."

"I'm proud to be a part of this incredible celebration, but truth be told, they couldn't have done it without me," says Ashley J. Williams, star of the movie and comics. "When they suggested the #1992.1 comic, I said, 'Why, that's the highest numbered comic of all time. That sounds great!' They stated that another company had done a #One Million, and shotgun in hand, I explained to them how that was a stunt and this is the real deal, so all I can say is ... buy it! You'll love it."

"What better way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Dynamite than with an incredible oversized Army of Darkness story," says Nick Barrucci, CEO and Publisher of Dynamite Entertainment. "This special is in time for our 10th anniversary and serves as a holiday present to our fans! Comics and movie fans alike will not want to miss this issue."

Army of Darkness is a 1992 fantasy/comedy film with strong horror elements starring Bruce Campbell (Burn Notice) and Embeth Davidtz, the third installment in a trilogy featuring reluctant hero Ash Williams.  Directed by Sam Raimi (Spider-Man), the film saw its tough-as-nails, wise-cracking protagonist transported from the modern era to the Dark Ages in his continuing war against demonic evil. Army of Darkness generated a dedicated fan following for its premise and lead actor.

ALICE COOPER #3

This cover arrangement seems familiar, but I can't put my finger on it. It seems very Dave McKean-esque, but a cursory search of Sandman covers didn't turn up a match. Anyone else got an idea?

Charlie's life is falling apart. He seems to be losing more than just his son as he and his wife struggle with Juniors illness. But will help come from an unexpected "friend"? And can Charlie face the demons that come along with the decisions that he is making?
This is a pretty common image, so I'm guessing it's generic rather than an homage to anything in particular.

DJANGO/ZORRO #1

Writers: QUENTIN TARANTINO, MATT WAGNER

Art: ESTEVE POLLS

Cover A: JAE LEE

Cover B: FRANCESCO FRANCAVILLA

Subscription Variant: MATT WAGNER

32 PGS / Teen + / $3.99

Featuring a story by Oscar Award-Winning Writer/Director, and Django creator Quentin Tarantino, and award-winning writer/artist/creator Matt Wagner! The official sequel to Django Unchained in the first-ever comic book sequel ever done of a Tarantino film!

Set several years after the events of Django Unchained, Django/Zorro #1 finds Django again pursuing the evil that men do in his role as a bounty hunter. Since there's a warrant on his head back east, he's mainly been plying his trade in the western states. After safely settling his wife, Broomhilda, near Chicago, he's again taken to the road, sending her funds whenever he completes a job. It's by sheer chance that he encounters the aged and sophisticated Diego de la Vega -- the famed Zorro -- and soon finds himself fascinated by this unusual character, the first wealthy white man he's ever met who seems totally unconcerned with the color of Django's skin ... and who can hold his own in a fight. He hires on as Diego's "bodyguard" for one adventure and is soon drawn into a fight to free the local indigenous people from a brutal servitude, discovering that slavery isn't exclusive to black folks. In the course of this adventure, he learns much from the older man (much like King Schultz) and, on several occasions, even dons the mask and the whip ... of The Fox!

The acclaimed filmmaker Quentin Tarantino comes to Dynamite for the first time with a sequel to his film Django Unchained, as Django meets the legendary Zorro!  Known for his incredible films that are uniquely "Quentin," such as Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill, Django/Zorro will stand out from every comic book coming out this year.  Django/Zorro is co-plotted by Quentin Tarantino and will be co-plotted and written by comic book legend by Matt Wagner (Mage, Grendel, The Shadow, Zorro).  Reginald Hudlin, writer of the Eisner Award nominated Django Unchained screenplay adaptation and a producer of the Django Unchained film, will be working closely with Quentin and Matt as the editor of Django/Zorro! Stay tuned for information on Django/Zorro, set for release later this year from Dynamite Entertainment and DC Entertainment!

"I'm very very excited about both this story and the opportunity to work with Matt.  It was reading his Zorro stories that convinced me what a good idea it was to join these two icons together.  And the story idea we came up with is thrilling, and I think will be an exciting new chapter for both characters." -- Quentin Tarantino

"This project is an absolute thrill," adds writer Matt Wagner!  "When Quentin and I first met, it felt like we'd known each other for years.  The give-and-take energy of our initial story sessions was just incredible!  It's a particular buzz to be writing Zorro once again … and especially to team him up with the magnetic lead character from Quentin's most straight-up heroic movie, Django Unchained!  The Wild West is never gonna be the same once these two come to town!"

"This series is the first time Quentin Tarantino explored the continuing adventures of one of the characters from his films," states Django Producer Reggie Hudlin.  "That he would do it in a comic book demonstrates his love and appreciation of the medium.  Quentin is not just a comic collector -- he's got a spinner rack in his house!"

"First and foremost, this is a dream project to have both Quentin and Matt, both master storytellers, collaborate for the first time by bringing the scope of cinema to the comics medium," says Dynamite CEO/Publisher Nick Barrucci.  "I can't express how happy I am to co-publish this series with DC Entertainment, and release what is sure to be THE Cross-Over event of the year."

"We are excited to see that our Eisner-nominated Django Unchained movie adaptation has inspired Django's appearance with Zorro and are pleased to be part of what is sure to be a highly-anticipated crossover event," stated Hank Kanalz, Senior Vice President of Vertigo and Integrated Publishing, DC Entertainment.

"In previous adventures, Zorro's rich history has teamed him up with the Shadow and with the Lone Ranger, as well as many other iconic characters," said John Gertz, CEO of Zorro Productions, Inc., "But this will be his greatest meeting yet!  Django and Zorro are the perfect team, and so are Quentin Tarantino and Matt Wagner.  It is an honor for us to work with these two masters of their craft."

"Matt has worked hand-in-hand with Quentin to put together a meeting the likes of which comics have never seen." -- Joseph Rybandt, Dynamite Senior Editor

"Django Unchained captures the same spirit as Zorro -- namely, that the bad guys get what's coming to them," says Keith Davidsen, Marketing Manager of Dynamite Entertainment.  "We're a culture that has thrilled to, and thrived on, the swift and brutal justice of the vigilante.  In the deft hands of mind-blowing filmmaker Quentin Tarantino and master storyteller Matt Wagner, the explosive comic book pairing of these two Western icons will surely satisfy that most guilty pleasure."

THE LONE RANGER: VINDICATED #1 (of 4)

Writer: JUSTIN GRAY

Art: REY VILLEGAS

Cover: JOHN CASSADAY

Subscription Variant: MARC LAMING

32 pages / Teen + / $3.99

Dynamite Entertainment is proud to announce the signing of Justin Gray, who will be continuing Dynamite's long standing success with America's quintessential Western hero, as he takes the reins on a brand new series of The Lone Ranger.  Launching with a new #1 in November 2014, The Lone Ranger will feature the exciting interior artwork of Rey Villegas (Lady Zorro), as well as covers by John Cassaday (Uncanny Avengers, Astonishing X-Men) and Marc Laming (All-New Invaders, Kings Watch).

"I'm proud to be working with one of the longest standing and best known Western characters in all of literature, because to me The Lone Ranger represents a moral code, unquestionable justice, and a sense of adventure that embodies the classic American Western," says Justin Gray.

No stranger to Western thrills, Justin Gray is a frequent contributor to Jonah Hex and All-Star Western, tales of an Old West gunslinger set within the larger DC Comics continuity. Gray has contributed to dozens of name-recognizable titles from Marvel Comics and DC Comics, including Batwing, Ame-Comi Girls, Punisher, Power Girl, Countdown, and many more.

Since his radio debut in 1933, the masked Lone Ranger has endured as an icon of American culture. Dynamite first launched The Lone Ranger as a comic series in 2006, written by Brett Matthews and illustrated by Sergio Cariello.  Its #0 prelude issue was a part of that year's nationwide Free Comic Book Day celebration, and the series would go on to score an Eisner Nomination for best new series in 2007. A second volume of The Lone Ranger followed, as did such miniseries as The Lone Ranger and Tonto and The Lone Ranger: Snake of Iron.

"We are incredibly excited to have Justin on board for this title," said Nick Barrucci, CEO and Publisher of Dynamite Entertainment. "We've had a great run with The Lone Ranger as one of our most consistent critically acclaimed comics, and needed someone who we could trust to fill these 'big boots,' continuing one of the best Western heroes ever.  With a track record like his, we're in for a Western comic that we won't soon forget!"

Beginning a new Sonja epic that will shake the She-Devil to her core! In THE FORGIVING OF MONSTERS, PART ONE, the Hyrkanian finds herself aiding a small village against a hideous and bloody infestation, while an enemy from her past threatens to crush her spirit forever!

What I love about Frison's depiction of Sonja is that she more closely resembles a real girl than many other depictions, especially the ones with bowling balls attached to her chest. The more Sonja resembles living, breathing girls I have known, the sexier she is to my eyes.

Of course, what is sexy and what isn't is even  more subjective than most topics on this board, so I assume your mileage will vary!

After Harry Houdini's opening night performance is undone by a grotesque murder, he clashes with Sherlock Holmes when Holmes refuses to allow the legendary magician to help bring the perpetrator to justice. But the proud Houdini won't take 'no' for an answer, leading to an epic game of cat-and-mouse in London's dangerous streets.

Burning film strips is fairly common image, but this is the first I can recall where the strips are horizontal, and not vertical.

Greeting, citizens! With perfectly pitched scripts and the iconic high-camp cleverness of “Pow!,” “Thwack!” and “Zap!” graphics, Batman leapt off the pages of the comics and into our living rooms to become one of the biggest hits in television history.

The entire first season, complete with cliffhangers, Bat-gadgets and alter egos, is captured here, including an episode guide to all the pop culture and adventure. Witness the debut of diabolical foes, from the raucous Riddler to the persuasive Penguin to the calculating Catwoman, as they attempt to confound our Caped Crusaders, Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward). Now completely re-mastered, all of the originality, crime fighting action, and archvillainy of the premiere season are perfectly pixilated on DVD like never before -- for those who were there, and a new generation of Bat-fans!

New York City, late 1970s. Times Square is a haven for sex and drugs. The city teeters on the verge of bankruptcy, while blackouts can strike at any moment. This is the world of THE KITCHEN.

The Irish gangs of Hell’s Kitchen rule the neighborhood, bringing terror to the streets and doing the dirty work for the Italian Mafia. Jimmy Brennan and his crew were the hardest bastards in the Kitchen, but after they’re all put in prison, their wives – Kath, Raven and Angie – decide to keep running their rackets. And once they get a taste of the fast life and easy money, it won’t be easy to stop.

THE KITCHEN takes one of the most popular genres in entertainment and, like The Sopranos, re-imagines it for a new generation to present a classic gangster story told from a fresh point of view.

Written by talented newcomer Ollie Masters with stunning art by Ming Doyle (Mara) and killer covers by Becky Cloonan (GOTHAM ACADEMY, Killjoys, DEMO), THE KITCHEN is not to be missed.

I kinda feel like I've already read a number of "Mob Wives" stories. Maybe I'm thinking of Real Housewives of New Jersey.

In one explosive moment our universe was born -- and with another it will be destroyed! This winter, writer D.J. Kirkbride (Amelia Cole) and illustrator Vassilis Gogtzilas (Adventures of Augusta Wind) team up for THE BIGGER BANG, a four-issue mini-series exploring the depths of humanity through the warped lens of an ever-expanding multiverse. This action-packed space fantasy defies the laws of science and the comforts of belief!

"My artistic pal Vassillis approached me about doing a comic with some kind of outer space superhero, and that pretty quickly became THE BIGGER BANG," says writer Kirkbride. "It's a comic about forging one's own destiny despite circumstances of birth or the past ... starring a space god in orange tights, a three-eyed green warrior lady, and a Cthulhu in a flying space castle."

Created by an inexplicable universe-killing event, the being called Cosmos traverses the stars, seeking to help those he can in order to atone for the sins of his birth. Often mistaken for a harbinger, Cosmos soars the intergalactic space ways alone … but will soon find himself up against an alien tyrant on his quest for acceptance.

Series editor Justin Eisinger, most commonly found overseeing IDW's expansive line of books and graphic novels, described his experience as such: "THE BIGGER BANG is a story with heart and vision. The off-kilter pairing of Kirkbride's quirky writing and Gogtzilas' expressive, kinetic artwork work in perfect disharmony to bring this impossible story to improbable life. We sure hope you have as much fun reading BIGGER BANG as we're having making it."

“With the THE BIGGER BANG, Kirkbride and Gogtzilas craft a tale full of wonder and horror at the human condition by focusing on life outside our own universe!" -- Adam P. Knave (Amelia Cole, Artful Daggers)

    AAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH!

I have seen this cover before! From the cover dress, it looks like 1970s Marvel, or maybe early '80s. The pose looks very Gil Kane. The content ... ?

I've looked at covers to Luke Cage, Hero for Hire; Jungle Action, starring Black Panther; Black Panther; Blade covers on Tomb of Dracula; Blade; Master of Kung Fu; Special Marvel Edition, starring Master of Kung Fu; Gil Kane covers on Avengers; and on the off chance it's a white character, as many Bullseye and Gambit images as I had time to do. (They throw things.)

Couldn't find it! Someone please scratch this itch and tell me what this cover is homage-ing!

Against the crawling corruption of the darkest pits of the universe stands only one man. A hero whose knowledge spans the limitless depths of both the Necronomicon and the Betty Crocker cookbook. The salvation of our world rests in the greasy hands of a morally ambiguous, fried-food craving zealot for good. His enemies and his friends fear him, his grocer loves him. He is The Hammer.

Completely collected for the first time!

I bought a couple issues of this at the time, probably thinking it had something to do with Judah Maccabee, the Hammer of God (from Nexus), but I didn't buy sufficient to get a sense what it's about, or if it's any good. I'm just worthless today, aren't I?

When we say "complete," we mean COMPLETE! Bobby London's take on the Sailor Man has often been overshadowed by his being fired from the strip in 1992, ostensibly for presenting a storyline that was an allegory about abortion. King Features Syndicate pulled the final three weeks of strips and daily newspapers began running reprints. Story over in mid-stream.

Now, 22 years later, thanks to the kind cooperation of the good folks at King Features, those three weeks will be included in this second volume of our series. But wait… that's not all! Turns out that Bobby London produced an additional six weeks of strips beyond the three that were pulled from syndication!

Contains ALL NINE weeks of "censored" Bobby London Popeye strips.

    Offered Again!

Another sexy twisted issue of Weird Love! You know you crave Weird Love

This wacko issue includes seven retro-lurid comics on trailer trash girls; plastic surgery; alcoholic, gambling, cheating men you shouldn't marry; bad mob girls using their earthy charms to criminally dupe men; not shaving (!) and the heartbreaking, head-exploding lead-off tale, "Too Fat To Frug!"

“Slices of deranged genius…a wildly entertaining collection!” -- Wired Magazine

I hadn't considered that Yoe would include non-Golden Age romance stories, but the preview below shows one from 1970s Charlton Comics. And that's great, because the worst romance comics every published probably came out in the 1970s, when tragically un-hip New York Jewish men in their 50s and 60s, with zero understanding of the "youthquake" going on around them (or really anything outside of New York), tried to write "hip" stories for teen and twentysomething Baby Boomers in Kansas and Oregon. The results varied from hilarious to cringe-worthy. And worst of all was Charlton, which paid the worst rates and (therefore got only the most desperate, bottom-rung creators) and didn't even use letterers, instead using press-on letters for titles (like I was doing in junior high art projects) and using some sort of mechanized typesetter for captions and word balloons. The result was virtually unreadable drek, like "Too Fat to Frug" below. Awesome!

P.S.: Nobody was dancing the Frug when this story came out. I don't think anybody even knew how to dance the Frug after, say, 1970. It was related to dances like the Twist, the Monkey and the Swim, which also disappeared in he late '60s as rock became less about dancing and more about drugs and sex. (Or, at least, more obviously about drugs and sex.)

FROM THE CREATORS OF VIKING: Writer IVAN BRANDON (Wolverine, Men of War) and artist NIC KLEIN (Captain America, Thor) reunite to bring you a sci-fi ONGOING SERIES joining the dark revenge themes of Unforgiven with the mind-bending sci-fi universe-building of Dune.

In its frantic rush to survive itself, mankind has spread across the universe, colonizing and strip-mining countless planets. Abram Pollux barely survives a crash landing on Ouro, a lawless backwater world where life is cheap. What starts as a struggle for survival quickly becomes a journey to the very edges of what it means to be human.

68ff4e3d-e028-4048-8de9-09f1a27bf4c4.jpg?width=250Writer and artist James Harvey’s MASTERPLASTY, which became a cult sensation online, finally hit shelves in an oversized-print format and instantly garnered critical acclaim and praise. The Onion’s AV Club called it “socially conscious with a biting sense of humor ... get lost in the wildly imaginative mind of one of the industry’s most promising up-and-coming creators." MASTERPLASTY will go back to print at a standard trim size and will be priced at $3.99.

When pressed for a quote, James responded, "now you can all stop asking me how you carry this thing home in the rain. Just kidding. I love you."

“James initially wanted to issue Masterplasty in an over-sized format, and I think doing so underscored how different this project was from everything else on the market,” said Eric Stephenson, Publisher at Image Comics. “That being said, we both agreed that reprinting the book at standard comics size would help his work reach a wider audience, whilst simultaneously making the first printing something truly special for everyone who bought it.”

In MASTERPLASTY, a young man decides to leave his college girlfriend after undergoing a new medical procedure which drastically modifies the physical appearance of the human body in ways both beautiful and hideous. But will changing the outside change what’s within?

“I’m jealous of anyone seeing James Harvey’s work for the first time,” added Stephenson. “Because he has such a singular and unique vision that it’s one of the most truly eye-opening experiences in modern comics.”

    THE HONORVERSE EXPANDS TO COMICS!

Based on the novels by David Weber

160 pages, paperback, full color, $19.99

Collects TALES OF HONOR: ON BASILISK STATION #1-5

Honor Harrington, star of the New York Times bestselling science fiction novels by David Weber, is now gracing the pages of her own graphic novel in TALES OF HONOR: ON BASILISK STATION VOLUME 1 from Image Comics/Top Cow. Based on Weber’s first Honor Harrington novel, TALES OF HONOR: ON BASILISK STATION is written by Matt Hawkins (THINK TANK) and drawn by Sang-Il Jeong.

The first volume of TALES OF HONOR introduces Honor Harrington, Commodore in the Royal Manticoran Navy, on the eve of her execution. From prison, she tells her story, starting with her first command mission on a hellish, backwater outpost in a distant star system. On Basilisk, Honor discovers and confronts a conspiracy that will lead the Manticore Kingdom into the horror of war with the corrupt Haven Republic.

In adapting the beloved Honor Harrington series, Top Cow worked closely with Weber, who writes in his introduction to the first issue, “Honor and I are moving into entirely new media, and I feel confident Evergreen Studios and Top Cow will introduce Honor and her friends — and enemies — to an even larger audience, with a few new, exciting wrinkles of their own as my literary creations are given a strong graphic look and the characters are brought to life on the screen.”

“Matt Hawkins has done a remarkable job of staying faithful to the original story and the science while adding his own unique perspective to it,” Weber continued. “I don’t think that should surprise anyone, given Matt’s works like Think Tank and Aphrodite IX, both of which explore stories with real grounding in scientific fact in thoughtful, yet highly entertaining ways. In the case of Tales of Honor, his decision to create a story in which Honor reflects on her past creates a focused perspective on these characters and stories which should be exciting for new readers while offering longstanding fans fresh insights into stories they may have read long ago.”

The Honor Harrington series consists of 29 novels by David Weber, published by Baen, with Over 7 million copies in print worldwide. Evergreen Studios has expanded the Honorverse into comics and gaming.

Every 90 years, twelve gods incarnate in the bodies of ordinary people. For two years, they are loved. They are hated. They are stars. And then they are dead. The Image Comics series THE WICKED + THE DIVINE is the stunning new work from the critically acclaimed and reader-beloved Young Avengers team, Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie. THE WICKED + THE DIVINE VOLUME 1: THE FAUST ACT will be in stores in November.

Returning to the collision of music, fame, and divinity that launched their careers with the series PHONOGRAM, Gillen and McKelvie have created a world where gods are the ultimate pop stars and pops stars are the ultimate gods. Caught in their shining wake is Laura, the ultimate fan girl, who is made an offer she can’t refuse when Lucifer (here a sleek, Bowie-esque androgynous blonde in a crisp white suit) is framed for murder and asks for her help.

Writer Gillen described the effect the gods have on mortals in THE WICKED + THE DIVINE in an interview at Comics Alliance. “What the gods do isn’t music -- it’s kind of an above-music, an ur-art-form that all art forms aspire to,” he said. “We take some of the semiotic fancy dress of pop, but we’re very expressly not saying it’s pop music. It’s just what pop music feels like, at the absolute best.”

Shimmering with colors by Matthew Wilson are artist McKelvie’s signature clean lines, beautiful people, and eye for fashion.

“I say this a lot, but comics are pop culture, and as such should feed from all the other forms of pop culture around it,” said McKelvie of his visual inspirations in an interview at Multiversity Comics. “We should bring in fashion, music, TV, movies, magazines, anything that can be used to further the story or make it look right. In terms of the look of the characters, well, I just pay attention to the world around me.”

THE WICKED + THE DIVINE VOLUME 1 will be in comic book stores on November 12 and in bookstores on November 25. It is specially priced at just $9.99 and available for pre-order now.

THE WICKED + THE DIVINE VOLUME 1: THE FAUST ACT by Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie

Praise for THE WICKED + THE DIVINE

“... cocksure, contemporary and perverse, light entertainment from a brutally heavy place. The Wicked + The Divine announces up front that it’s constructed for the moment rather than for the long haul, which is a smart move on Gillen and McKelvie’s part. That’s the only way pop ever gets to be immortal.” –- Douglas Wolk, Comics Alliance

The Wicked + The Divine is a consistent must-pull for anyone who enjoys music, pop culture, criticism, and/or storytelling that hits on multiple levels. It's an exquisitely made comic book (writing, art, lettering, all of it), but it's also more intellectually intriguing than a lot of books in publication right now.” –- Jen Aprahamian, Comic Vine

“We’re still in the early phases of what Gillen has already confirmed is to be an on-going who’s ending is ‘years off’, but, so far, The Wicked + The Divine is proving to be a tantalisingly paced whodunit about gods told through the eyes of one of their fondest acolytes.” –- Stephenson Ardern-Sodje, Multiversity Comics

1936498093?profile=RESIZE_320x320The first issue of one of the most haunting and anticipated new horror series of the year, WYTCHES, by Scott Snyder (SEVERED, Batman) and Jock (SNAPSHOT, Batman) has conjured praise from critics and fans alike and left much of the comics industry terrified and unnerved. It has sold out completely at the distributor level and is flying straight to a second printing to meet customer demand.

Across the globe, century after century, men and women were burned, drowned, hanged, tortured, imprisoned, persecuted, and murdered for witchcraft. None of them were witches. They died protecting a terrible and hidden truth: witches—real witches—are out there. They are ancient, elusive, and deadly creatures that are rarely seen and even more rarely survived.

Masters of horror Snyder and Jock unveil WYTCHES #1, introducing readers to a world of unimaginable fear in this special OVERSIZED FIRST ISSUE with 30 pages of story and no ads for just $2.99.

    Praise for WYTCHES:

“These weren't going to be the bulbous nose, broom-riding Halloween caricatures. These witches are a cannibalistic, skeletal race that hide in the forest, gifting their naturalistic powers to greedy folk who pledge other people in exchange. And those poor saps are doomed to be food for the creatures.” -- NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

“A story that will horrify readers on every level.” -- COMIC BOOK RESOURCES

“I read it. I loved it. it scared the living crap out of me.” -- CBS MAN CAVE

“An awesome and at times terrifying tale.” -- IGN

“I don't read a lot of comics these days but I read a little bit of WYTCHES--and a little more…And before I realized what I was doing I'd read the first issue. And now really can't wait for the second. I loved it.” -- Mike Mignola, Hellboy

“The scariest thing you will read all year.” -- COMICBOOK.COM

WYTCHES #1 has completely sold out at the distributor level, but may still be available in comic stores. It  is currently available digitally on the Image Comics website (imagecomics.com) and the official Image Comics iOS app, as well as on Comixology on the web (comixology.com), iOS, Android, and Google Play.

    • This is it! The all-new, Spy-Fi, high-flying adventures of Sam Wilson Captain America and Nomad begin here!

    • Hydra is growing, the terrorist band have has infiltrated the Marvel Universe completely! But what is their ultimate goal?

    • United by Hydra, Cap’s rogue’s gallery gathers to take down the new untested Captain America and Nomad!

Drained of the Super Soldier Serum that gave him his strength, speed and endurance – Steve Rogers is no longer fit to wield the shield. But there must always be a Captain America – and his trusted friend and partner Sam Wilson is ready and able to take the job. With Steve’s son Ian at his side as the new Nomad, he’ll spread his wings as the new star spangled Avenger!

“I’ve been having a lot of fun writing Sam,” says Rick Remender in an interview with Marvel.com. “It’s a completely different attitude. The fact that he’s not a soldier shifts thing up a bit. Sam’s not going to be Steve. Steve can be very rigid. That can be kind of joyless at times, whereas Sam is absolutely not that.”

Marvel is excited to announce the title of Captain America will be passed to Sam Wilson, The Falcon, in the pages of All-New Captain America #1 by series writer Rick Remender (Captain America, Uncanny Avengers) and series artist Stuart Immonen (All-New X-Men).

Announced on The Colbert Report by Joe Quesada, “Sam Wilson …The Falcon, is the new Captain America.”

Addressing how Sam Wilson will follow in the footsteps of his predecessor, Steve Rogers, Remender says, “Sam wants to lead by example. To help people see their own selfishness and to turn it around. To build better communities, to never forget the little guy.”  Remender continues, “Sam follows his heart and his belief in what the American dream means and how it belongs to everyone.”

The question remains: what happens with the original Captain America, Steve Rogers? Executive Editor Tom Brevoort says, “Steve’s spirit is as willing as ever, but his body is no longer up to the task of being Captain America. So he’ll employ his skills as the new Cap’s remote strategic adviser, running Cap’s missions from his headquarters in Avengers Mansion and providing Sam with technical support and field information from a distance. He’ll also tutor Sam in how to throw the shield, a skill that’s deceptively difficult for the new Cap to master. So Steve will continue to be a vital part of the series moving ahead.”

    ACT II: INVERSION

The heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe stand on the edge of a knife, and the world faces annihilation in AVENGERS & X-MEN: AXIS #5! Blockbuster writer Rick Remender is joined by chart-topping artist Terry Dodson as Act II: Inversion gives rise to a new world DISORDER! Heroes will be broken, eyes will be opened and a universe will tilt on its AXIS.

Splintered and alienated, the forces of Avengers and X-Men stand on opposing sides. The Red Skull has been released from his holding cell in Avengers Tower. Someone aided him. Someone who was present on Genosha. But whom? And why are the heroes and villains acting so strangely?

Narrowly escaping with their lives, Spider-Man and Nova are enlisted by Steve Rogers for a daring mission that could determine the fate of us all. The new Sorceress Supreme finally gains her revenge against the benevolent Doctor Doom. The Superior Iron Man battles Daredevil for the fate of an Extremis infected San Francisco. And in the name of survival of the fittest, the X-Men claim their new home.

The tide is rising, and the Axis of Evil will spread. And the world will tremble in fear. Don’t miss AVENGERS & X-MEN: AXIS #5 on sale in November!

    • But the Frozen Wolves of Niffleheim are ready to tear their prey apart ...

That's Futhark -- viking runes -- running along the side of the second cover. As a lad, I taught myself how to pronounce Futhark words -- it was pretty easy, Futhark being Germanic (like English) and only having 16 or so letters. But unless those words are close enough to something in English or modern-day Deutsch, I don't have the vocabulary to understand what they're saying.

Which means your guess is as good as mine!

Fan-favorite Mighty Avengers scribe Al Ewing returns along with new series artist Luke Ross for a new series with a new mission spinning directly out of the upcoming Avengers & X-Men: AXIS!

Sam Wilson has inherited his new patriotic moniker, but is he up to the task of leading a team of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes? The hero formerly known as Falcon has some new ideas for the rag-tag team of Mighty Avengers -- but the events of AXIS may spell doom for the inexperienced leader. And not everyone on the team is happy with Sam’s new position as leader. Spider-Man is back, too -- Amazing this time, NOT Superior. Luke Cage & Jessica Jones are still itching to give him some payback for trying to take their daughter to Child Services. “As for the mission statement – same as it’s ever been,” promises writer Al Ewing, in an interview with Marvel.com. “Help those in need, however they need it. Prepare for every Spider-Man … ever! Marvel is proud to announce Spider-Verse, the biggest Spider-Man story of the year from New York Times Best-Selling Spider-Scribe Dan Slott and blockbuster artist Olivier Coipel!

Kicking off this November in Amazing Spider-Man #9 (with a special lead-in story on Free Comic Book Day), Slott and Coipel assemble a legion of Spider-Men from every corner of every universe. Peter Parker, Miguel O’Hara, Miles Morales and many, many more must unite to stop a seemingly insurmountable super-powered foe. Morlun, an incredibly powerful villain has returned with a singular and terrifying goal -- exterminate every Spider-Man in every universe! It will take thousands of spider-powered heroes to battle back the greatest threat to this universe or any other!

“The scope of this event is so big, the word ‘epic’ just doesn’t do it justice,” says editor Nick Lowe. “The story is just huge and heartbreaking and has necessitated spreadsheets to organize all the Spider-Men. Luckily we have a writer who has proven time and time again he can thread impossible story-needles [Slott] and the most versatile character artist in the business [Coipel].”

Fans saw the first hints of this event in April’s Amazing Spider-Man #1 but  got their first real taste of Spider-Verse in Marvel’s Free Comic Book Day Guardians of the Galaxy issue this with a special 5-page lead-in story May 3rd. This fall, Spider-Verse unites every Spider-Man in history to drive back the forces of darkness. But will an army of Spiders be enough?

    BE SUPERIOR!

He will make you smarter. He will make you beautiful. He will make you healthy. All this could be yours with the new EXTREMIS 3.0. And the Superior Iron Man is ready to give them to you – for the right price!

Marvel is proud to announce the release of Superior Iron Man #1 by series writer Tom Taylor (Injustice: Gods Among Us) and series artist Yildiray Çinar (Supergirl). Tony Stark will give in to his ego and return to his billionaire playboy roots of self-obsession and superficiality.

Senior Editor Mark “Panic” Paniccia says, “What’s fun about Superior Iron Man is we get to see Tony Stark in a different mode. He’s very much like he was before Iron Man’s origin, before Tony became a superhero … a narcissistic, selfish profiteer. And Tom Taylor is having a blast with this personality, giving us an Iron Man that is bound to ruffle some fans’ feathers but will secretly -- I think -- find to be a guilty pleasure.”

“He’s self-obsessed. Cunning. Superficial. Superior,” explains writer Tom Taylor. “He has given Extremis to the people. Extremis can now be downloaded as a mobile app through any smart device in San Francisco and this creates Tony’s idea of a Utopia, which he is very happy to be at the heart of. But not everyone is buying Tony’s Paradise.

Superior Iron Man will also feature recent “City by the Bay” transplant – Daredevil!

“Daredevil may be blind but he can see the cracks in Stark’s Brave New World,” says Taylor. “In a way this is all an allegory for the technology that now rules our lives. The corruption that comes from this technology and the dependence we each have on it.”
