Titles listed in the Comics Guide come from the weekly list at the Diamond Comic Distributors Inc. website, and are subject to change. The information in the Comics Guide comes not only from Diamond but from solicitations, press releases and previews released by the publishers, except for random comments by Captain Comics (in blue).
BEST BETS
For more information on Best Bets and other titles,
consult the "This Week's Comics" section below.
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #9 ($4.99, Marvel Comics): This is Part 1 of a big Spider-event called "Spider-Verse," in which an old character named Morlun is killing all variations of Spider-Man throughout the multiverse. Evidently the survivors will all flee to Earth-616 ("our" Earth) and team up with Spider-Man in a last-ditch, last stand against the unstoppable Morlun. That's already a pretty interesting story, but it's further spiced up by the imagination on display on some of the variant Spider-people we've met so far, including the most popular, Spider-Gwen (who comes from a world where the irradiated spider bit Gwen Stacy, not Peter Parker). Spider-Gwen is destined for her own title, so here's a chance to get in on the ground floor. And if you like it, you may want to also pick up AMAZING SPIDER-VERSE TEAM-UP #1 (of 3, $3.99), which offers two sets of Spider-variants teaming up each issue.
BLOODSHOT #25 ($4.99, Valiant Comics): This 48-page anniversary issue serves up a murderer's row of talent, including Peter Milligan (X-Men: Legacy), Lewis LaRosa (Punisher MAX), Howard Chaykin (Satellite Sam), Duane Swierczynski (Deadpool vs. X-Force), Manuel Garcia (Black Widow), Duffy Boudreau (BlackAcre), Al Barrionuevo (The Authority), Justin Jordan (Spread), Rafer Roberts (X-O Manowar #25), Barry Kitson (Empire), and newcomer Daniel Kibblesmith. Bloodshot is one of my favorites from the new Valiant universe, a virtually unkillable killing machine whose memories are so tampered with he may never know who he really is -- or was. That sounds a lot like Wolverine on the surface, but Bloodshot's world is far more plausible -- and more brutal, unforgiving and cruel -- than the Canuck's ever was.
BETTY AND VERONICA #273 ($3.99, Archie): Part 2 of Michael Uslan's storyline with B&V becoming exchange students. Not only will we see our beautiful bookends on their European adventure, but also what their absence does to Riverdale in a parallel story. I assume, of course, that "exchange students" means two foreign girls will be coming to Riverdale, which will probably be an adventure for Archie!
DEATH OF WOLVERINE: LIFE AFTER LOGAN #1 (of 7, $4.99, Marvel): Wolverine may be dead, but he is still headlining books! This miniseries looks at the effect of Logan's death on his closest friends and enemies, some of whom will morph into pseudo-Wolverines for the upcoming weekly series titled, duh, Wolverines. Also this week, another miniseries leading into Wolverines begins, the five-issue DEATH OF WOLVERINE: THE WEAPON X PROGRAM ($3.99). If you're into feral mutants, the saga continues!
ETERNAL WARRIOR: FIST AND STEEL #1 (of 3, $3.99, Valiant): Eternal Warrior is an almost irresistible concept to history buffs, an immortal man who has protected the earth (the earth, not mankind) for 10,000 years. This series takes a look at that long history by A-list storytellers Peter Milligan (X-Statix) and Cary Nord (Conan).
JOHN CARTER: WARLORD OF MARS #1 ($3.99, Dynamite Entertainment): Dynamite has been doing a pretty interesting series of books about the Barsoom cast for years without the approval of ERB Inc., because -- believe it or not -- Marvel/Disney had the franchise, as evidenced by the Disney John Carter movie and a couple of Marvel miniseries. Now Dynamite does have the franchise, and have veteran writer Ron Marz aboard, which suggests this flagship book is going to be mighty good.Plus: A million variant covers (more or less)!
SERENITY: LEAVES ON THE WIND (HC, $19.99, Dark Horse): This is a must for Serenity fans, and I know there are a lot of you out there. This collected miniseries is a direct sequel to the movie.
SUPERMAN: THE GOLDEN AGE SUNDAYS: 1946-1949 ($49.99, IDW Publications): Reprinted for the first time, these late Golden Age comic strips ran in actual newspapers and were done by DC creative talent. So this will be a bit like finding a cache of Golden Age comics no one knew about before!
TERRIBLE LIZARD #1 ($3.99, Oni Press): This book is described as "a girl and her dinosaur." Written by Cullen Bunn (The Sixth Gun), that premise is enough to grab me.
TOOTH & CLAW #1 ($2.99, Image Comics): This new fantasy epic is described as "Conan meets Kamandi with a Game of Thrones-style storytelling experience." Well, those are big words, but if anyone can live up to the hype, it's writer Kurt Busiek (Astro City). Honestly, just the words "Kurt Busiek" had sold me before I read the description, and I hope it does the same for everyone else.

I loved Brian Wood's Northlanders, but I don't think that's enough to make me pick this up. For one thing, could the four girls be any more cliche? I hope I'm wrong, and this is really good, so if any Legionnaire wants to chime in, feel free.

One of the greatest Batman stories ever told, BATMAN: ARKHAM ASYLUM is celebrated in this 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition, offered simultaneously as both a Deluxe Edition hardcover and a new edition trade paperback at DC’s standard trim with a new cover by Dave McKean!
The inmates of Arkham Asylum have taken over and are demanding Batman in exchange for their hostages. Accepting their demented challenge, Batman is forced to endure the personal hells of The Joker, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, Two-Face and many other sworn enemies in order to save the innocents and retake the prison. During his run through this absurd gauntlet, the Dark Knight’s must face down both his most dangerous foes and his inner demons.
I know there are a lot of people who just love this book, but I thought it made Batman look too incompetent, plus everyone in Arkham would know he was Bruce Wayne by the end of it. I guess I'm just too literal-minded to enjoy something like this.

Grayson travels deeper into the organized chaos that is SPYRAL! Can he keep track of all the lies? Or will he fall apart once he can no longer tell fact from fiction?
I hope Grayson is OK with using guns as a secret agent. (I don't know, because I'm not reading this series.) While Batman might have a specific reason for not using guns, everybody else ought to. Seriously, in the modern worlds of espionage, law enforcement and supehero-ing, being expert at firearms seems like a survival skill.
For example, on TV's Arrow, Oliver Queen runs out of arrows in a gunfight, picks up a gun and promptly picks off about four of the bad guys while Roy Harper gapes at him. "What?" Oliver says. "I never said I didn't know how to use one!" Because, honestly, it would be stupid for him to NOT know how to use a gun.

Dynamite Entertainment is proud to announce a brand new chapter in the history of Edgar Rice Burroughs creation, John Carter: Warlord of Mars, to be written by the masterful pen of comics legend Ron Marz. Illustrated by newcomer Abhishek Malsuni, John Carter: Warlord of Mars is the newly-minted cornerstone of the publisher's Warlord of Mars line, launched in the wake of their May 2014 announcement of the comprehensive licensing agreement between Dynamite and Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.
John Carter: Warlord of Mars welcomes science fiction and fantasy fans to the exotic landscape of Barsoom, where displaced earthling John Carter has to save his adopted world, not to mention his beloved Dejah Thoris, from an enemy like no other he has ever faced. John Carter must truly become a Warlord of Mars against an adversary who is every bit his equal on the savage red planet.
Marz's enthusiasm for John Carter has been building for many years. He says, "This is literally a job I've been wanting to do since I was twelve years old. I was just the right age when I discovered John Carter, Dejah Thoris, Tars Tarkas, and the wonder of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Mars. It fired my imagination like almost nothing else. So to finally get a chance to write these characters, to visit that world, is a dream come true for me."
Ron Marz is an industry veteran with decades of experience as a writer and editor under his belt. He is best known for his work on Green Lantern and Silver Surfer, and as one of the original creative masterminds behind CrossGen Comics. His more recent work includes Witchblade, Cyberforce, and Voodoo. He currently lives in upstate New York with four horses, three children, two dogs and one wife.
"We are incredibly excited about Ron coming on board for this project," says Nick Barrucci, CEO and Publisher of Dynamite Entertainment. "When we originally launched the Warlord of Mars series in 2010, Ron and I ran into each other at a comic convention, and Ron grabbed me by the shoulders and said something to the effect of, 'How can you launch a John Carter series and not call me to write it?' It was a statement! As we looked at the potential creators for this series, we instinctively remembered Ron's passion for the mythos. He is simply the perfect fit. Add in the fantastic art by Abhishek Malsuni and Neeraj Menon, this series will take John Carter to new heights."
John Carter debuted in 1912 as the lead character in Edgar Rice Burroughs' first novel, serialized as Under The Moons Of Mars in the pulp magazine, The All-Story, and later published as a complete novel retitled A Princess of Mars. The character excited the imagination of readers and quickly imprinted onto the public psyche. As many literary and popular culture scholars attest, John Carter served as the template for a litany of adventure heroes to follow, from Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, and Superman to the Jedi Knights of Star Wars fame and Avatar.
Dynamite's John Carter: Warlord of Mars comes on the heels of the reacquisition of comic book rights by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. that had been held by Walt Disney Pictures and its Marvel Entertainment subsidiary, as well as a recent legal settlement with Dynamite that cleared the way for Dynamite to introduce key characters and plot elements from the John Carter backstory that were, until now, absent from recent comic book interpretations.
John Carter: Warlord of Mars #1 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors' September Previews catalog, the premiere source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in November. Comic book fans are encouraged to reserve copies of John Carter: Warlord of Mars #1 with their local comic book retailers. John Carter: Warlord of Mars will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, iVerse, and Dark Horse Digital.

The Man of Steel solves the case of the Curiosity Crimes, becomes a rival for Cleopatra’s affections in ancient Egypt, is exposed to radiation that turns him into Superbabe, battles a prehistoric animal called a “Paleomatzoball” (!), reprises the “Superman's Service to Servicemen” series with a couple of services for veterans, encounters an ancient civilization in the lost valley of Ru, meets up with Angus the talking dog, and to top it all off, witnesses Lois marrying Clark Kent -- or does he?!

Manhunter by Archie Goodwin and Walter Simonson was one of the most acclaimed series of the 1970s, winning numerous awards along the way—not bad for a backup feature that only ran seven episodes! NYCC will mark the launch of this Artist’s Edition that presents the original run of Manhunter, as well as a classic Batman story, Dr. Fate, Metal Men, and Captain Fear tales with a convention-variant cover. A wealth of classic material by a classic artist, and with nearly every page shot from the gorgeous original art, courtesy of the Simonsons’ personal archives!
An “Artist’s Edition” presents complete stories with each page scanned from the actual original art. While appearing to be in black and white, each page was scanned in color to mimic as closely as possible the experience of viewing the actual original art -- for instance, corrections, blue pencils, paste-overs, all the little nuances that make original art unique. Each page is printed the same size as drawn, and the paper selected is as close as possible to the original art board.

Another Gory edition to the Chilling Archives of Horror!
This September, children will go back to school and the leaves on the trees will turn golden as they greet the first day of fall. IDW Publishing/Yoe Books will proudly interrupt this beautiful time of year with the release of a collection of blood-drenched, spine-cracking tales ripped from the pages of the most demented horror comics ever published in The Worst of Eerie Publications.
"I should have my head examined, letting that maniac Howlett loose to infect everyone with this mind-melting collection of Graphic Gore!” said Craig Yoe.
“After having my book The Weird World of Eerie Publications published in 2010, I was trying to think of how else I could damage the collective minds of the innocent. IDW and Yoe Books have given me the opportunity to carry on the outrage with this revolting tome. My momma always said it was nice to share, so I’m happy to share my sickness! Bon Appétit!” said Mike Howlett
Collected for the first time in a deluxe edition are the incredibly gory, crazy and infamous Eerie Publications horror comics; comics that really pushed the boundaries of good taste. With scripts pilfered from Pre-Code horror comics, these twisted tales of illustrated terror feature artwork by Dick Ayers, Chic Stone, Domingo Mandrafina, the Iger Shop, and many other unsung masters of the morbid and are presented in glorious, carefully re-mastered black and white. Absolutely not to be missed for those who enjoy the grisly and the lurid.
And what about those nausea-inducing covers? We’ve got them! A horrid helping of deadly, full-color covers are reproduced for your discomfort and revulsion. Enjoy!
Gratuitous gore! Multi-Monster Madness! Bound Beauties! Oh my! 21 Terror Tales that only Eerie Publications would dare publish … until now.
And don't forget to check out the other chilling and wacky archvial titles from IDW and Yoe Books, Haunted Horror and Weird Love!
I remember seeing Eerie Publications covers back in the Long-Before Time, and chuckling. They were just so silly! There'd be all kinds of monsters on a single cover, doing terrible things to each other with art so bad it was more funny than scary.
Take the the cover above. Why is the monster comically larger than the victim? Is one eye being sewed shut supposed to be scarier (it isn't)? Why does he have a cartoon nose out of Disney book? And why should I care if a monster eats a vampire? I care if a monster eats an innocent victim, but there were no innocents on Eerie covers, just monster-on-monster gorefests. Like I said, silly.
So, yeah, I'm going to get this book! Why do you ask?

THE HUMANS
Art / Cover: TOM NEELY
32 PAGES / FC / M / $2.99
Apart, they are nothing ... deemed by society as outcasts, misfits, losers, no good punks! But together, they are THE HUMANS! THE HUMANS is a high-octane, no-holds-barred, ape-biker-gang chopper ride into '70s exploitation genre bliss. Follow Bobby, Johnny, and all The HUMANS as they fight and fly down the road to oblivion on a ride filled with chains, sex, leather, denim, hair, blood, bananas and chrome.
First announced at Image Expo in July, offbeat writer Keenan Marshall Keller (Galactic Breakdown, Drippy Bone Books) and artist Tom Neely’s (The Blot, Henry & Glenn Forever, Popeye) new project with colorist Kristina Collantes, THE HUMANS, will ride into comic shops on November 5. Readers are advised to buckle up for a high octane, no holds barred, ape-biker-gang chopper cruise back into '70s exploitation genre bliss. This first issue features an eye-popping back-cover pin-up by artist Benjamin Marra (Night Business, Gangsta Rap Posse).
Keller cited his passion for exploitation films while he was in film school in Chicago as the inspiration for the series in an exclusive interview with Nerdist. “It was initially an idea I had for a film script in my brain for over 15 years. I wanted to create genre stories and when thinking about a biker idea, I just saw them as apes and it clicked.” The idea resurfaced again years later over drinks with Tom Neely, who later went home and sketched out two apes on a bike based on a famous Danny Lyon photo. From there THE HUMANS went full speed ahead.
THE HUMANS is one long and twisted ride through biker gang warfare, drug running, corrupt cops, semi-truck hijackings, Vietnam flashbacks, Skin Fights (homosapien cockfighting), major ultra-violence, a strip club called The Forbidden Zone, and bloody vengeance.
Image has been on such an impressive run lately, it's kind of surprising to see a first issue that doesn't grab me. I'll try to reserve judgment until I read it, but I'm not thrilled with this preview -- I don't care for the art, and the story looks like a punny, anthropomorphic take on Sons of Anarchy.

Collects KINSKI #1-6
Writer/Art/Cover: GABRIEL HARDMAN
Rated Teen, 136 pages, paperback, black and white, $14.99
A lost black labrador retriever puppy. A lonely traveling salesman named Joe. When they find each other, Joe is convinced they’re a perfect match. But in KINSKI, a graphic novel by Gabriel Hardman (Hulk), fate has a way of trying to get in between a man and his would-be best friend. Joe is going to make sure that nothing -- not animal control, airline regulations or an endless RV park -- keeps them apart.
While Joe’s behavior in this quirky pursuit story may border on obsessive, KINSKI creator Hardman makes sure his main character’s intentions are pure.
“I think anyone who has adopted a dog, or really any animal, can understand that spark of attachment you feel when you find the right one for you,” said Hardman. “Joe takes that spark of attachment very, very seriously. And sure, he makes some bad decisions, but he genuinely believes what he’s doing is right.”
Originally published as a digital comics series by Monkeybrain Comics, the black-and-white graphic novel is both written and drawn by Hardman, who honed his visual storytelling skills doing storyboards for films like Interstellar, Inception and The Dark Knight Rises, as well as the comic book Hulk. Hardman relishes the opportunity to draw his own story.
“In Kinski, I get the chance to express those ideas in their purest form,” he said. “Since I’m writing and drawing, every element is integrated together from moment one. Artists and writers in comics now are so rigidly segregated but I don’t think a book like Kinski could be made that way. Here I’m determined to let the visuals tell the story and reveal character just as much as the dialogue.”
Praise for KINSKI:
“As writer and artist, Hardman turns a straightforward narrative into a captivating psychological study, creating a tense atmosphere that makes Kinski the Breaking Bad of dognapping tales.” -- Oliver Sava, The A.V. Club
“Gabriel Hardman is the sole creator of Kinski. Writer and artist all at once, there seems to be nothing that he can’t do; in neither area is he lacking. Kinski is so much more than a story about a businessman who falls in love with a dog. At the same time, it is precisely that, and the way he manages to keep it exciting and suspenseful is nothing short of impressive. His minimalist style of artwork heightens the themes and mystery of the narrative, and yet the level of aesthetic detail is remarkable. Hardman’s faces say so much more than words or dialogue ever could.
“So I’ll say it again: Kinski is a must-read comic book. “ -- Andrew Ziegler, Entertainment Fuse
“The story is remarkably tight and well thought out. It’s deceptively simple but manages to spiral out of control and become a character study. Why is Joe so resistant to let go? Why is he so determined? And what has to happen for him to give up?” -- Zac Thompson, Bloody Disgusting

Once upon a time, “Part Time Punks” DJ and writer Michael Stock and artist Sina Grace (BURN THE ORPHANAGE, LI’L DEPRESSED BOY) conjured up a story about the ever-curious Penny Dora and the unexpected gift that arrives on her doorstep in PENNY DORA & THE WISHING BOX. This new fantasy adventure series will begin in November from Image Comics with a special 28-page first issue.
One day, a young girl named Penny Dora discovers a mysterious box on her front doorstep. It is a magic box with the power to grant wishes...but what she’s about to unwrap is the darker and creepier meaning behind the old adage, “be careful what you wish for.”
Stock cited his daughter for first inspiring him to write about Penny Dora’s adventures. “Penny Dora is actually based on a story my daughter Nico wrote when she was 8 years old for her school paper. The first issue is basically an expansion of her original story. Since then the story has grown through talks we had in the car on the way to school in the mornings via a playful papa/daughter back and forth game of 'what if.' The cat in the book, Iggy, is based on our cat (also named Iggy, and also a great lover of ham).”
Grace added: “The minute I read Michael's scripts for the series, I was absolutely enchanted by Penny Dora and her world. It's been a dream to breathe life into the adventures of fantastic and charming characters. I can't wait for the world to see!”
PENNY DORA & THE WISHING BOX is an whimsical retelling of the Pandora myth and an all-ages fantasy adventure perfect for fans of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline and Ted Naifeh’s Courtney Crumrin. Eisner Award winning cartoonist Hope Larson (A Wrinkle In Time, Mercury) provides the alternate cover for the 1st issue and lettering for the series.

TOOTH & CLAW, the exciting new series from bestselling writer Kurt Busiek (Marvels, Astro City), artist Benjamin Dewey (I Was the Cat, Tragedy Series), Eisner-winning colorist Jordie Bellaire (THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS, PRETTY DEADLY), and letterer John Roshell of Comicraft that was announced at Image Expo in July, will launch on November 5.
The highly anticipated fantasy epic can best be described as Conan meets Kamandi with a Game of Thrones-style storytelling experience. In TOOTH & CLAW, a secret conclave of wizards brings a legendary champion forward through time from the forgotten past to save the world—with disastrous consequences. Featuring swords, sorcery, beast-wizards, gods, sprawling animal empires, golems of radioactive decay, crystalline badlands, con women, ancient armories, young love, mystery, blood and death and treachery and destiny … TOOTH & CLAW is the sprawling, world-building fantasy series readers have been waiting for.
And while the emphasis is on adventure, exploration and a simmering conflict that'll set the world's most revered hero against the gods themselves, the adventurers won't be the only ones breaking new ground. TOOTH & CLAW is Busiek's first Mature Readers series, and he's looking forward to the freedom it offers.
In an exclusive interview with Comic Book Resources, Busiek said, “When Cary Nord and I did Conan, and when Carlos Pacheco and I did Arrowsmith, we kept bumping up against the mature-readers line, and several times had to have the colorist obscure things to avoid nudity or gore or whatever. So on this series, I went in knowing it was going to be a brutal world, where the violence was important, and where I didn't want to tease nudity the way we had to in Conan—I wanted to do the story the way it felt right to me, and if that added up to mature readers, then so be it.
"So the horizon's wide open," he added, "and we'll go wherever the story takes us. It's a series I've been itching to write for years, and it's the book Ben Dewey was born to draw, and we can't wait for it to hit the stands."
TOOTH & CLAW #1 will be available on 11/5 as a double-sized 44 page issue with no ads for only $2.99. It can be pre-ordered with Diamond Code SEP140540.

"BLOODSHOT #25 is going to be a remarkable milestone for Valiant on multiple levels," said Valiant Publisher Fred Pierce. "Not only is it the fourth Valiant launch series to cross the 25-issue threshold, but, with Bloodshot taking a lead role in THE VALIANT in just a few months, the timing couldn't be better to celebrate one of the most iconic and successful characters in the entire Valiant catalog. There is a reason why fans continue to be drawn to this one-of-a-kind creation, and we've lined up an all-star cast to give him the anniversary celebration he deserves."
In the wake of the devastating events of BLOODSHOT #25, Valiant's most wanted man-at-arms steps directly into THE VALIANT -- the highly anticipated prestige format mini-series from superstar creators Jeff Lemire, Matt Kindt, and Paolo Rivera beginning in December. An entirely self-contained comics event spotlighting Bloodshot, Eternal Warrior, Geomancer, and a cast of heroes and villains from across the Valiant Universe, THE VALIANT is a visionary new adventure from three of the greatest creative talents in comics today.

From steel comes salvation!
Master storyteller Peter Milligan (Hellblazer, Shade the Changing Man) and Eisner Award-winning artist Cary Nord (X-O Manowar, Conan) join forces for an epic saga of swords, savagery and steel in ETERNAL WARRIOR: DAYS OF STEEL #1 – the FIRST ISSUE of a new three-issue mini-series chronicling the brutal and bloodied history of Valiant's immortal champion in sweeping scope and bone-crushing scale!
For more than 10,000 years, the Eternal Warrior has stood on guard, protecting the Earth from all who would seek to do it harm. A master of countless weapons and long forgotten martial arts, he is guided by the Geomancers -- those who speak for the Earth. Confident in his role, the Eternal Warrior believed he had seen and survived it all … until a mysterious quest in the 10th century led him to question the very foundation of his existence. After completing another brutal mission at the behest of the Geomancers, the Earth’s undying guardian is approached with a cryptic task: to find and save a newborn child -- in whose hands might rest the fate of an entire people. But when a thousand conquering Magyar invaders join the quest for the child, can history’s most expert killer be trusted to keep one precious life alive?
"The Eternal Warrior is a character of immense proportions with literally thousands of stories waiting to be told throughout history. Peter and Cary are two masterclass storytellers, and have forged a story that befits the awesome scale and scope," said series editor Alejandro Arbona. "Set against the backdrop of one of the most ferocious periods in all of human history, Peter has not only delivered an intense action-packed story but one that is also incredibly moving and thought-provoking. And Cary has delivered a herculean effort, producing incredibly detailed and awe-inspiring pages that have to be seen to be believed."
Before Gilad joins Bloodshot and an all-star cast of Valiant's greatest heroes for a brand-new crusade against the Immortal Enemy in THE VALIANT #1 – a new four-issue prestige format mini-series by Jeff Lemire, Matt Kindt and Paolo Rivera beginning this December – take up the blade and discover the roots of Earth's immortal champion in ETERNAL WARRIOR: DAYS OF STEEL #1 – arriving in comic shops everywhere this November from all-star creators Peter Milligan and Cary Nord!
