ARCHER & ARMSTRONG #25 ($4.99, VALIANT): This 48-page anniversary issue contains a number of stories, not only the tale of Armstrong's first drink, but also a Timewalker story and even a drinking game. It's Valiant's funniest book swinging for the fences.
BASIL WOLVERTON'S WEIRD WORLDS ARTIST EDITION (HC, $125, IDW): If you like Basil Wolverton's baroque, incredibly unique style, this book belongs on your bookshelf. Of course, there are those who look at "Lena the Hyena" or "Spacehawk" and think Wolverton's work is just plain ugly. There's really no middle ground with Wolverton, and if you are familiar with his work at all, then you know which side of the line you're on -- and whether you want this book.
BEST OF ENEMIES: A HISTORY OF U.S. AND MIDDLE EAST RELATIONS PART TWO: 1954-1984 (HC, $24.95, SelfMadeHero): This is information that you don't learn in civics class, but probably should.
DEATHLOK #1 ($3.99, Marvel Comics): Deathlok goes back to the '90s, but this latest incarnation incorporates elements of the character as he appears on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. That's probably an improvement, as all previous incarnations have been unsuccessful.
HARLEY QUINN ANNUAL #1 ($5.99, DC Comics): Believe it or not, this annual will have two editions, both of which actually stink! They have chemicals that activate when rubbed, hence "Rub and Smell" as a selling point. (One imagines "Scratch 'n' Sniff" must be trademarked.) Anyway, the domestic version of the book features smells similar to leather, suntan lotion, pizza and "cannabisylocibe 7-A," which one assumes to be a marijuana odor. The international one omits the marijuana smell (one presumes to avoid problems with drug-sniffing dogs at various customs offices). What's the story about? Typical Harley silliness, one presumes, and one doesn't care. The "Rub and Smell" is the attraction, and if that tickles your funny bone (or collector mentality), here ya go!
HOWARD THE DUCK OMNIBUS ($99.99, Marvel): Howard the Duck was a unique creation in unique times: A cynical, misanthropic (misavian?) fowl from a planet of same. Stuck on Earth, Howard tries to make sense of the politics, society and relationships of these crazy, hairless apes. As written by the late Steve Gerber, there's never been anything like Howard before or since. If all you've seen is the awful Howard the Duck movie, you ain't seen nothin' yet!
MARVEL 75TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION #1 ($5.99, Marvel): This 56-page anthology lets big-name creators take a fresh look at stories of old, or re-visit characters they wrote or drew in the past. If you're a Marvel fan, this is for you.
SONIC BOOM #1 ($3.99, Archie): A new Sonic series launches, based on the new video game and TV series of the same name. If you're a Sonic fan -- and given sales of the various Sonic tltles, there's a good chance you are -- you know what to expect and probably can't wait. My only question is why no one thought of this obvious title before!
Titles are grouped alphabetically by publisher, in this order:
Action Lab Entertainment, Archie Comics, Dark Horse Comics, DC Comics, Dynamite, IDW Publishing, Image Comics, Marvel Comics, Valiant Comics and the catch-all Other Publishers.

Art: ROD REIS

128 PAGES / FC / M / $9.99
Collects C.O.W.L. #1-5
The Chicago Organized Workers League once stood as the embodiment of the Golden Age of superheroes -- a union for Chicago’s best hopes against the scourges of organized crime and supervillainy. But in C.O.W.L. VOLUME 1: PRINCIPLES OF POWER by Kyle Higgins, Alec Siegel and Rod Reis, it’s 1962, and everything has changed. The last of the supervillains has been defeated, the public is cynical, and scandal and corruption plague the once-irreproachable organization.
In this Fall graphic novel from Image Comics, C.O.W.L. must re-invent itself for changing times -- but will it survive the process?
Co-writer Higgins, who made his name in comics writing Batman and Nightwing at DC Comics, commented on the difference between writing about his own superheroes and writing for company-owned characters in an interview on Image Comics’ website.
“Our characters can change,” he said. “As much as I love writing guys like Batman and Nightwing, there’s a very set standard when it comes to who they are and what they can do … how they’re allowed to react to certain things and what decisions/mistakes they’re allowed to make. We don’t really have those limitations in C.O.W.L., which means being able to explore these heroes as real people, watching them grow and change … for better and for worse.”
Artist Reis’s retro, stylish art on C.O.W.L. has been widely hailed as perfectly conjuring the early ‘60s, as does Higgins’ and Siegel’s story, which depicts a once-static organization adapting to the rapid cultural change of its time.
“A down and dirty Mad Men meets Heroes in ’60s Chicago.” -- Entertainment Weekly
"A gorgeous book, and the story is just as captivating as the art." -- The AV Club
“There's a touch of Mad Men's style and sex appeal as well as Watchmen’s serious approach to heroes. ... Stunning.” -- Mental Floss

Story / Art / Cover: DAVID LAPHAM
OCTOBER 22 / 224 PAGES / BW / M / $19.99
Collects STRAY BULLETS #1-7
David Lapham’s rich, influential crime series STRAY BULLETS returned to comic book stands in March 2014, with the launch of its first new story arc in nine years, “Killers.” Whether newly-hipped to STRAY BULLETS or longtime fans, readers can now get new editions of the classic story arcs from Image Comics, beginning in October with STRAY BULLETS VOLUME 1: INNOCENCE OF NIHILISM.
Follow the lost lives of people who are savagely torn apart by events beyond their control. As the innocent world of an imaginative little girl is shattered when she witnesses a brutal double murder. Or an introverted young boy on the verge of manhood gets a lesson on just how far is too far when he falls for a needy woman who lives in the fast lane. Or party with a pair of low-rent hoods who learn about what is really important in life just when they shouldn't. And even learn the story of the most infamous gangster who ever lived, Amy Racecar, who talks to God, lunches with the President, and just may be responsible for the end of the world.
“Stray Bullets to me is a format for telling my stories. Every issue is a complete tale in itself ranging from traditional noir to emotional drama, comedy, action, suspense, even surreal nonsense,” said Lapham in an interview at the Image Comics website. “Together they all form a larger story of a cast of misfits, losers, outcasts, families, kids and killers and the tragedies that shape them. But forgetting all that, the gut of Stray Bullets, its mission, is to deliver emotion. To knock readers on their ass every issue with a strong visceral, truthful emotion.”
STRAY BULLETS won the 1996 Eisner Award for Best Writer/Artist, and the trade paperback collection STRAY BULLETS: INNOCENCE OF NIHILISM won the 1997 Eisner Award for Best Graphic Album-Reprint. Its trademark dark, neo-noir themes and nonlinear storytelling have been likened to the storytelling styles of Quentin Tarantino and David Lynch.
Praise for STRAY BULLETS: THE INNOCENCE OF NIHILISM
“Stray Bullets is the best crime comic of all time… An epic, sprawling tale of uncommon criminals, shocking violence, and innocence burned to the ground, Stray Bullets is an American masterpiece, a crime comic of such convincing realism and startling intensity that it stands as the absolute peak of its genre.” -- John Parker, Comics Alliance
"...a character-driven social drama with brilliant artwork by David Lapham." -- Brian Cronin, Comics Should Be Good

The Demolisher returns this October for DEATHLOK #1, an all-new series from the critically acclaimed creative team of Nathan Edmondson (Black Widow, The Punisher) and Mike Perkins (Captain America, Stephen King’s The Stand)!
Henry Hayes is a veteran, a single parent, a man who thought he’d left his war behind. But unbeknownst to him, he’s been transformed without his knowledge into the perfect weapon of destruction: Deathlok! Operative, fighter, assassin and more – on the battlefield, he is whatever his handlers need him to be.
Created by the mysterious Biotek corporation, Hayes is utilized as a deadly weapon rented out to the highest bidder, his memories erased at the close of every mission. As Henry slowly uncovers the truth behind the horrors that were visited upon him, he’ll struggle with the knowledge that he’s been transformed into a weapon of mass destruction – and expose the disturbing legacy of the many Deathloks that came before him.
“In the tradition of ‘The Bourne Identity’, Deathlok will offer a high-intensity thrill ride mixed with a voyage of discovery, as Henry is forced to peel back the onion-skin of his own existence to get to the truth -- and to wrest back control of his life from his corporate overseers!,” says Executive Editor Tom Brevoort. “Viewers familiar with the character concept from his appearances on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series ought to feel right at home getting in on the ground floor of this new series with an all new Deathlok.”
Hunted across the globe by S.H.I.E.L.D., the one man army will be forced to choose – is he a man, or a machine? Follow the high-octane new title as Deathlok makes his debut today in Original Sins #1 and explodes into his own series this October for DEATHLOK #1.

You can shoot him, stab him, and make with the punchy-punchy right in his face, but nothing can keep the Merc with a Mouth down. What do they have in common? "Since issue #1, Archer & Armstrong has been nothing short of a blast to work on, and we've been blessed with an incredibly gifted cast of creators along the way – Fred and Clayton, Pere Perez, Khari Evans, Emanuela Lupacchino, and David Baron, just to name a few," said Archer & Armstrong editor Josh Johns. "Now, with issue #25 coming up, we here at Valiant wanted to build the biggest, most jam-packed milestone issue possible for the fans who have made this series a success…and finally check in on some of the long-asked questions that we planted in previous arcs. This is going to be a big one!"
The official Archer & Armstrong drinking game! The never-before-told story of Armstrong's first drink! A very special Timewalker adventure! And more! It all happens here as Valiant's conspiracy-busting, history-smashing swashbucklers saunter into the big two-five!
For ten thousand years, the immortal currently called Armstrong has been sleeping and boozing his way across Earth, keeping one step ahead of a secret cult – known simply as the Sect – obsessed with killing him. That all changed, however, when an 18-year-old Sect assassin named Obadiah Archer turned on his masters, and joined Armstrong for a globetrotting quest to bring down the Sect's unholy coalition of conspiracies around the world. Nazi Buddhists! Probe-happy aliens! Dead celebs! The One Percent! And even an Eternal Warrior. But Archer & Armstrong's fight is only just beginning – and they'll face a dire series of daft and dangerous new perils when ARCHER & ARMSTRONG #25 strikes in October!
Featuring five fabulous covers from Archer & Armstrong legends past and present – including Clayton Henry, Shawn Crystal, Pere Perez, Jim Calafiore, and Michael Walsh – start reading here as one-half of the mischievous DELINQUENTS kick the tires on the year's merriest anniversary milestone! This October, somebody call the fire marshall because ARCHER & ARMSTRONG #25's epic rager is about to get out of control!
Valiant is proud to announce that New York Times best-selling writer John Layman (Chew, Detective Comics) will join red-hot artists Joe Eisma (Morning Glories), Khari Evans (Harbinger), Andy Kuhn (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and Ramon Villalobos (Original Sins) as the latest colossal talents stepping on board ARCHER & ARMSTRONG #25 -- October's oversized, 48-page anniversary celebration of Valiant's conspiracy-smashing, globe-trotting adventure duo!
"Archer & Armstrong is absolutely fantastic, and I'm stoked to be part of this landmark issue," said writer John Layman. "I really love the entire vibe of the book -- a buddy action comedy, full of conspiracy and history, and then injected with just pure fantastic gonzo madness. I love books where you can tell the creator is having a good time, because it's infectious. I'm recommending Archer & Armstrong to anybody who likes fun comics."
Layman, Evans, Kuhn, and Villalobos are just the latest additions to an already star-studded roster of comics talents set to contribute to Valiant's next great oversized anniversary milestone, and will join previously solicited creators Fred Van Lente (Amazing Spider-Man), Clayton Henry (Harbinger Wars), Ray Fawkes (Batman Eternal), Justin Jordan (Spread), Rafer Roberts (Carpool Buddies of Doom), Joey Esposito (Captain Ultimate), Donny Cates (Buzzkill), Eliot Rahal (Dark Horse Presents), Juan Doe (Legion of Monsters), Barry Kitson (Legion of Super-Heroes), and more for ARCHER & ARMSTRONG #25's jam-packed celebration!

It's 1985 in New York City. Wildstyle graffiti covers subway cars as. B-boys break and spin in playgrounds and on street corners. Koch is mayor. Drugs and crime rule the streets. A terrifying plague is brewing in the shadows. And as the populace loses faith in the police, a man named Bernard Goetz is being hailed as a hero for shooting four teenagers in a subway car.
In this 1985, however, the city's brand new guardian angels wear spandex and capes, wielding their gadgets and their superpowers to clean up the City - even if their methods hurt more people than they help. There's the deluded "graffiti king" Mr. Marx patrolling the tunnels; the dark moral crusader The Puritan who stalks the shadows of the Lower East Side; and above it all, the godlike Helios, darling of the Upper East Side and the NYPD. It seems like only some of New York's residents are benefitting from these vigilantes' protection. The rest whisper the name of another hero: DMC.
You see, in this 1985, Darryl McDaniels (Run DMC) never rocks the mic to become one of hip-hop's most enduring icons. Instead, he dons his tracksuit and Adidas sneakers to defends the city's marginalized citizens against super villain and super hero alike, leaving no traces besides the imprint of his knuckle rings on his opponents' faces. (By day, though, he teaches junior high school English.) With the help of reporter Charlie Cooper and a band of graffiti artists led by the spunky Lak6, DMC must confront the new "heroes," and investigate whether there's anything behind their sudden appearance.
DMC, the inaugural title from Darryl Makes Comics, imagines an alternate history that blends traditional comic book storytelling with the pressures and anxieties of 1980s NYC, and explores how we got to where we are now. DMC is a superhero for those who need one most.
