So here's my idea... why not do COMMISSION sketches? I figure, $50 for full pencils, $100 for fully-inked, per figure, your choice of any character. This kind of thing would SERIOUSLY help me take care of certain things like my electric bill, heating oil bill, and credit card bill.
E-mail me direct and we'll see what we can set up.

Man, I know how you feel. We get killed by home heating oil costs every year. It's just absolutely brutal to pay that bill.
You should draw a few cheesecake pictures and try to sell them on eBay. Go there and search "original comic art" and you can see that a lot of people do exactly what you're trying to do. Your art will definitely find some suitable buyers. One thing that I've seen a lot of is people doing cover recreations.
For example, you could try redrawing Amazing Fantasy No. 15 or Action Comics No. 1. From there, you have some options. You could redraw it exactly with the appropriate hero (Spider-Man or Superman), replace the logos and wording with something the buyer requests (such as "Jones Chevrolet Man!") or offer to replace that hero with someone the buyer wants -- such as his own hero or a likeness of a friend.
That kind of art does really well ... that and cheesecake pictures!
Thanks. So far, I've done 3 commissions, and not one of them matched what I offered. So I'd say I can do anything, and it's up to the buyer what they want. So far I've done...
1 - company logo
2 - a pair of political cartoons
3 - superhero figures for a comic-book cover
In the last 2 months, I've hooked up with about 8 "Recruiters" or "Temp Agencies", and in the last 2 weeks I've been going thru a list of 190 area Ad Agencies sending them samples of my work. You'd think with all this effort SOMETHING has to happen soon, but until it does, I'm having trouble sleeping.
Well, you're doing some things I never would have thought of! Do temp agencies really have that kind of vacancy listing? If they do, you might want to suggest some ideal places for them to pitch your work. Uncreative people sometimes can't see the "opportunities" you might be able to offer ... crazy things like painting a mural for a daycare or drawing up some illustrations for a kids menu in a local restaurant chain.
And 190 local ad agencies? Wow, you've got a lot of potential there ... probably a lot of competition too. :(
You should also try submitting a few political cartoons to the local newspaper(s). They might be happy to have some localized content since very few can support a full-time editorial cartoonist.
If there's anything you need, business cards, character pin-ups, you name it, let me know. We'll set something up!

Pardon my posting this again (with update)...
Things are SO bad, financially, and until I actually hook up with a regular job I'm a nervous wreck worrying about how I'm gonna get get thru the next few months. As you can see, this can also cover company logos, political cartoons, comic-book covers... ANYTHING you need, I'm up for it!
I've just set up a gallery at my website in the MISC. ART section so you can see what I've done so far.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page, click the tiny "gallery" button, then scroll down to "a. Misc. Art 6 Commissions". But don't miss all the other fun stuff there, as well as the other sections!
