Joanne Siegel, wife of Superman co-creator and model for Lois Lane, died on Feb.12. In Newsday, it was told how she met Siegel and Joe Shuster in Cleveland in 1935 when she was hired to model as Lois for their at-the-time future newspaper strip. She later married Siegel who died in 1996.

The family is still trying to get back ownership of Superman.

It goes without saying that DC's treatment of Siegel and Shuster, Bill Finger and other Golden/Silver Age writers and artists could have been better, given the revenue involved. The same could be said Jack Kirby and Marvel.

I don't know if the Siegel family could or should regain the rights to Superman but certainly some royalties should be given.

But at least Jerry Siegel is reunited with his Lois!

  • My understanding is that a number of years ago the US congress extended the length of time for which copyrights could be held. Since this was potentially unfair to creators who had sold their copyrights, a provision was included that they, or their heirs, could file to reclaim them within a particular window. The Siegel family successfully reclaimed Siegel's part of the copyright to Superman. DC retained the Shuster part of the copyright, but I've read a Shuster heir has filed to reclaim his share during a second window. I don't know whether that case has been heard yet or not.

The Siegel family also filed to reclaim the copyright on Superboy. I'm not on top of what happened there. My understanding is they ended up losing the case, but I don't know on what grounds. I should add that I'm no lawyer.
