I got the Stargirl cover and it's kinda cute. Still slowly getting the team together on this but some good explanations. Couple of strange jumps too. We start at the base in Canada. Miiyahbin and her friend Heather are looking around and are attacked. Heather gets away but Miiyahbin vanishes along with her attacker. On Rann the team once again starts to fight the creature but is interupted by Supergirl. This is one of those jumps I mentioned. First Stargirl says "There's a Supergirl?" Why is that a surprise to her? For that matter I thought Kara was into her Red Lantern phase and she shows no sign of that now. Kara also says that she 'was halfway across the galaxy and I heard this thing (the creature) call out." I that is something I'd expect from Kara of the Silver Age, not the modern one. Courtney gives a one panel one breath explanation of what is going on, she seems to be really struck by Kara even though she didn't even know there was a Supergirl. Before the fight can resume they are all put into containment fields by the Rannians, until J'ohn steps out of it and threatens violence. At this point we cut back to the birth chamber from last issue. The scientist is reveling over the birth of the new Ultra and Lobo asks if he can start killing. Hawkman shows up and they start to fight again. Hawkman has his arm back, apparently the nth metal can regrow limbs now? Back on Rann everyone learns that after a series of wars a group of the rulers of planets got together and decided to create a baby as a symbol of unity. A being that would have a little dna from all of their races. Once they got started they expanded the project to include all races, that's why the base in Canada. They were gathering dna (though not through kidnapping or harming anyone), but the project was discovered by Byth and he took over the project. He's the one who's been kidnapping. Though he gives a lecture on good intentions turning bad J'ohn does agree that Byth has to be stopped, proclaiming that they are the Justice League. They get to the birthing ship just as the child wakes up and from the looks of it blows a hole in the ship. Not a bad issue, but this title is still finding itself.

  • I also wondered at the lack of Red Lantern-ness for Supergirl. And if she's not a Red Lantern yet (or this takes place after she stops being one, because you know she will), then what's she doing in outer space?

It also occurred to me that there are two teenaged, blonde superheroines in the New 52, and BOTH of them are on this team. Coincidence ... or something more? dum dum DUMMMMMM!

While I'm still waiting to see this first story shake out before I decide on it -- I'm not sold yet -- there were two gross errors in science here that not even comic-book science can cover up. And I'm not even counting that they've somehow narried DNA from a half dozen different races that live on different planets, which is mind-boggling. (Hint: The various races wouldn't even necessarily be based on the same element. Their DNA would be wildly incongruous.)

The first error was what you quoted, Mark -- Supergirl couldn't hear the creature bellow "halfway across the galaxy," or even a few hundred thousand miles away in space. SOUND DOESN'T TRAVEL IN SPACE. Remember? It's where no one can hear you scream.

The other error is that after the team is zeta-beamed to Rann, the others ask Martian Manhunter where they are. And he says they're in the Polaris system, based on the fact that they can see three moons.

Maaaaaan, that is so wrong I don't know where to start. First, bajillions of planets have three moons. Second, just because you see three moons doesn't mean that's all there are -- there could be another dozen moons facing the others side of the planet! Further, you can't determine location in space by ANY moons -- the stars, maybe, if you had a Super-brain that could rotate the view of stars from Earth mentally until it aligned with what you were seeing, presuming you could also do the mental gymnastics of moving your mental camera forward and backward to account for distance as you spun the galaxy on at least three axes. And that's the stars! You can't tell squat from looking at moons.

I'm not even going to mention that Sardath recognized J'onn as a Martian, even though A) he's the last of his race and has been for some time, and B) he wasn't in his natural form. Man, scientists can figure out anything, can't they?
